Introduction to Digital Capture

Significant moments from Weeks 1-2 Lectures and Practicals

Before taking this class, I had always been interested in the creative arts. However, when the COVID19 pandemic arose, I gained a new perspective being how important it is to pursue creative hobbies. So, whilst I was unable to work due to the pandemic, I purchased a Canon EOS90D and spent my days outdoors, capturing all that intrigued and inspired me. During this time, I had learned a thing or two about my camera, primarily by trying things out on the go and seeing what worked and what didn’t. However, I confess that I spent a lot of time in Auto Mode.

This first week’s lecture and practical for CAVA124 have given me a rundown of the camera features I knew a little about and a more comprehensive idea of the features of my camera I had been too intimidated by to investigate.

-  In this practical, I discovered there are several ways to check the settings your camera is in.

-  In this practical, I also learned the difference between automatic and manual focus and its usefulness.

Reflection:

A significant few moments in this class were learning RAW formatting, the purposes of ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture and how they relate to each other. I am looking forward to using my camera now that I better understand exposure, depth of field and different shutter speed techniques.

In the past I have known I have wanted my images to turn out a certain way but haven’t known which settings I needed to adjust to acquire the right colour, focus or sharpness, now I have the technical notes to refer to I feel more confidant in practical learning.

I found the above image in the lecture a particularly compelling use of depth of field and Perspective.
