EPICA's SIMONE SIMONS Releases Debut Solo Single 'Aeterna'

Simone Simons has been a pioneering force within the world of metal for over two decades as part of EPICA. Now, alongside her musical partner and longtime collaborator Arjen Lucassen (AYREON),she embarks on the journey of her debut solo album, "Vermillion".

Arjen is no stranger to Simone's soaring operatic voice, one that can stir even a gargoyle's stone heart to tears. Together they have crafted a sonic universe that befits the influential figure she is. Due on August 23 via Nuclear Blast Records, "Vermillion" emerges as a gargantuan goose-bump generator, a universally touching, stellar tour de force.

Alongside the announcement of her debut solo record, Simone has released a video for the album's first single, "Aeterna". You can watch the clip below.

Simone and Arjen state: "'Aeterna' is the big, epic opener of the album and it comes with this amazing video too, directed by Patric Ullaeus. It definitely sounds the closest to EPICA and AYREON, blending powerful Latin lyrics with a touch of an oriental feel. We've tried to strike a balance between the mighty, bombastic sounds and the more atmospheric parts. Since it's the first track people will hear from this album, it's super important to us and we're really excited for people to hear it!

"'Aeterna' takes the point of view of a star about to go supernova to explore how everything in the universe is interconnected, like a cosmic web made from stardust. It deals our deep emotions, consciousness and other mysteries of life that science still can't fully explain. Essentially it's a reflection on our place in the vast universe and the connections that bind us together, as we're all, to quote Carl Sagan, 'made of starstuff.'"

For more than 20 years, ever since she was a teenager, Simons has been carving her own path as a woman within the world of metal. As a lead singer, icon, and role model for a whole generation of female metalheads, the EPICA lead singer remains one of the most prominent key figures in all things metal. After eight albums and countless global tours with her band, Simone Simons finally found the time to release her first solo album — a moment 15 years in the making. Her breathtaking debut "Vermillion" is a stunning feat chronicling her storied past as well as her rise to fame, and showcasing her many different influences ranging from prog rock to film scores to metal to electronic elements.

Of the timing for her eagerly awaited foray into the realms of a solo career, the Dutch singer says with a disarming grin: "EPICA has my priority and I always have the liberty to do other musical projects besides my career in EPICA. Yet I never had the time to dive into a project to this extent."

This past March, Simone told Mexico's Summa Inferno that EPICA's follow-up to 2021's "Omega" album will likely be released in 2025.

"I love the songs so far that we've written," Simone said. "There's more [songs that have been written] than fit on the album. So it's gonna be cool. And we won't tour that much this year. So we are focusing on the EPICA album and the 'Symphonic Synergy' shows [where EPICA will play alongside an orchestra], which is a lot of work."

In November 2022, EPICA released "The Alchemy Project" through Atomic Fire Records. The EP was co-written and performed with diverse guests ranging from extremists like FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE, Niilo Sevänen (INSOMNIUM) and Björn "Speed" Strid (SOILWORK) along with melodic masters like Tommy Karevik (KAMELOT),keyboard legend Phil Lanzon (URIAH HEEP) and Roel Van Helden (POWERWOLF) to a once-in-a-lifetime song with Simons, Charlotte Wessels and Myrkur.

Just one day after the release of its anniversary reissues "We Still Take You With Us" and "Live At Paradiso", EPICA celebrated 20 years of existence live in September 2022 at 013 in Tilburg, Netherlands, the same place where they played their first show (supporting ANATHEMA) back in 2002.

EPICA was formed by guitarist/vocalist Mark Jansen after leaving AFTER FOREVER in 2002, and the band quickly gained attention outside their home country, taking big steps towards becoming the leading symphonic metal superpower they have long proven to be. After their ambitious debut "The Phantom Agony" (2002) and the surprisingly eclectic sophomore work "Consign To Oblivion" (2005),the road took them to new heights via their first concept masterpiece "The Divine Conspiracy" (2007) and their global breakthrough "Design Your Universe" (2009). 2012's opus "Requiem For The Indifferent", 2014's bedazzling "The Quantum Enigma" and "The Holographic Principle" (2016),cemented their reputation as not only one of the hardest-working metal bands in the business but also as one of the best. With "Omega", the final part of the metaphysical trilogy they began with "The Quantum Enigma", they reclaimed the throne without so much as the blink of an eye, amassing three million-plus streams during the first week of the album's release.

Zajok a nappaliból – Grande Traxelektor 2020 - “Mind”

Be kell hogy valljam, ezek a havi Traxelektorok nem is igazán fontosak. Mármint a megjelenés, tettenérés, begyűjtés szintjén azok, de mivel az elektronikus underground oly széles spektrumából történik a kiválasztás, az eredmény túlzottan eklektikus, és egymással nem igazán összeillő dolgok kerülnek egy kalapba. Persze a szelekció nagyon fontos egy olyan világban, ahol elképesztő mennyiségű túlinformáció áramlik, ahol az előadókat se könnyű követni, mert na várjál, példa: Karl O’Connor nevet viselő őstechnoarc úriember legismertebb a Regis néven, de Cub néven is jelent meg decemberben anyaga Simon Shreeve-vel közösen, ám két német haverral Ugandan Methods is tud lenni, illetve Anthony Child-dal (Surgeon-nel) British Murder Boys néven turnéztak pár éve, vagy amikor összeállt Function (David Sumner), Silent Servant (Juan Mendez), Regis (Karl O’Connor) és Female (Peter Sutton), akkor azt Sandwell District-nek hívták anno. A Discogs további 14 pszeudot sorol fel neve mellett. Szóval ezekből lehetne kanyarítani olyan érettségi feladatot, hogy a Kásler Doktor is egyből a Tízparancsolatot markolgatná, nemhogy Pisa-teszt. Szóval a Szelekció Hatalom. Olyan ez, mint egy nagy, több száz darabos kirakó. Most év végén ezt a 12 kalapot kiborítom, és szétválogatom 3 csoportba, ami háromféle zenei funkció és morfológia mentén jön létre. Idén az első a „Mind” nevet viseli, ezek a klasszikus nappaliba való szobazenék, akár lehet rájuk táncolni is, de inkább olyan hallgatós fajták, amik mellett akár beszélgetni is lehet. (Nem ellentmondás!) A következő posztban a „Move” kategória érkezik majd, szerintem ez elég egyértelmű ide a táncos, magas bpm számú darabok kerülnek (Shut Up and Dance!). Annyiban élve marad az eklektika, hogy bár dance, de ez lehet techno, industrial, ebm, electro, jungle, break stb... A harmadik posztban pedig „Sense” címmel a downtempo határterületeiről begyűjtött műremekek találhatók, tehát ambient, triphop, krautrock, dub, experimental zusammen cöxponilag legyen áldott a végtelen tér, melyben ott a helyed! Visszatérve a fenti fejtegetésre, olyan ez, mint mikor egy kép 2020 zeneiségéről csak itt a legvégén élesedik ki és válik láthatóvá (hallhatóvá). AM Affirmations 2019

This week’s Listener Appreciation edition of the AM is all about positivity—songs that send out simple messages of hope, acceptance, and encouragement. It’s been a rough few weeks in Alberta, and a lot of folks I know are exhausted with politics, with wondering where this province is heading and whether they have a place in it. Music Review: Dasychira - Immolated

Dasychira Immolated [Blueberry; 2017] Rating: 4/5 In a 2015 lecture to the European Graduate School’s Media and Communication Studies department, Benjamin Bratton, an American theorist, sociologist and professor of visual arts, presented thoughts dubiously compiled under the frame of “The Post-Anthropocene.” His talk began with a description of the now non-existent “Sanzhi UFO Pod City,” a seemingly futuristic city built in 1978 near New Taipei City in Taiwan for vacationing US soldiers. The city was abandoned in 1980 due to a series of suicides and bad omens believed to be the result of evil spirits enraged by the destruction of an ancient dragon statue. As ruins tend to, the grounds became a home for a range of non-human beings. 10 million orchid mantises from five different species developed an intricate civilization enmeshed within the human-made structures, co-composing a living architecture with several species and sub-species of orchids. The ruins, insects, and plants together formed an inter-special super-identity, reminding us, according to Bratton — that “The Future city is not for humans.” He furthers that “The Anthropocene, the reframing of the Earth in the image of industrial modernity, will be short lived. It will be less of a geologic era than a geopolitical instant. Humans are vanishing. Our cities are not our own. We are building the habitats for life forms other than our own. We are their tools, we are the robots for future insects…” Within this frame, the machinic music being developed by and supposedly for humans by human digital composers — the signifying sonics of spliced vocal components, spectral AI effects, high-impact digital ephemera, agile rhythms — all can be seen as wholly impermanent extensions of personal will haphazardly located in abstract communicative environments. The recordings placed here are willed into being. They flash, and then disappear; they become archived to hard drives as impermanent as sand huts in the desert, quick to be blown away back into a shapeless form — sound into sonority, back into an insectoid buzz. As mentioned in a review of M.E.S.H.’s Piteous Gate, there is an expansive, loose association of international producers who know full well the allure of Machinic Eros, as Felix Guattari calls it, “the desire to be in the thick of things,” be it culture, technology, symbols — the whole range of messy systems humans attempt to wrangle. These artists often use a cinematic symbology and all of its tropic tendencies to arrive at a statement of personal vision, interpolating trending audio into prodigious wills to power, wills to become, or, in the case of South African producer Dasychira, the will to un-become in an audible act that reflexively acknowledges a fragile humanity at the center of this discourse’s high-fidelity. Bratton would refer to this pantheon of sound loosely as a “disintegrated communicative array, an atmospheric metropolis built of digit-strings, where the addressability of physical objects (withdrawn into their specific enumeration) is itself overmatched by the addressability of abstract relations between objects, placing them toward substantialized abstractions, towards an absolute communication and absolute in-communication simultaneously.” Whew. Immolated, Dasychira’s debut release on Blueberry Records, follows releases by label head FaltyDL and the massive debut of Elysia Crampton’s acclaimed American Drift. The EP shines as a statement in the overflowing field of abstracted “club-ish” music; it doesn’t seem interested in a will to power, escapism, or even the apparent Kafka-narrative of the culinary human materializing as insect. Rather, he demonstrates a cannibalized un-becoming, an immolation of the human into sound-structures like the insectoid co-composititon of Bratton’s human-mantis-orchid-ruin superstructure. Dasychira’s overwrought, emotionally detailed, yet somehow still near-empty productions contain the full ornamentation of high-fidelity club music with a deconstructive agenda. The EP’s tracks are armed with sounds and tactics normalized within the field. They brim with affective potential — “heart” music appealing to the whole scope of human desire. Yet, still, these tracks acknowledge this human desire fading away — arriving as fleeting apparitions, club songs for no one — soundtracking movement between spaces, interstitial states, species changes. “Reliquary” and “Deviance” underscore the EP with a semi-melodic, infrastructural ambience obscured by hostile, chattering interruptions. These pieces veer into sweet affective nothings, Zazen poems delivered off the cuff of a prayer hand. They lament for human impermanence, displaying a nostalgic pathos toward a momentary cinematic understanding lost forever. Nodding at Arca in general timbre, Immolated’s substance is more deeply defined by a pining tone that comes to full fruition on the closing track’s outro, where percussion and melody are both tuned into a wriggling, sharpened moan. These somber moments shift into concise focus on “Caduceus,” an obvious single that easily outruns similarly-minded 2017 club attempts. The track is fueled by a molten emotional core that, again, balances a powerful initial presence with melancholy, as the piece moves into a wistful dissection of the track’s infrastructural characteristics. It cannot be overstated how ubiquitous attempts at manipulating and stabilizing human affect have become in 2017 electronica. Relentlessly, productions veer into massified attempts at cinematically swallowing whole experiences of apocalypse, dysmorphia, and alienation into highly coded extensions of personal will. Dasychira’s music skirts through this milieu with a truly thoughtful impermanence. Human artifices are rusted, damaged, torn, and co-composed into a sonorous, non-existent “Sanzhi UFO Pod City,” an architecture quite different from the futuristic designs of IDM and deconstructed club music that the EP floats through. Kyselina, the machinist 3D artist responsible for the EP’s cover art, has designed one of his most compelling works for this release, a spectacular example of a human hand composing the utter living character of a mantis larvae incubating under laboratory conditions. As the complete visual frames the record, the sheer detail here matches and then surpasses the music’s sonorous detail. It’s a vivid acknowledgement of our transience seeing the virtuality of this living creation become real again, brought forth by a human will from the void through digital ephemera — extending into sound — highly complex and ornate sound that touches all of our excitations and hysteria, then descending back into either a cosmic silence or the deafening buzzing of insects, droning without form forever. http://j.mp/2m8p5wP

Reviews 378: Fareed / Bunzinelli

I first visited the esoteric world of Chambre Noire back in 2019, when the radio show and mix series made the transition to record label with the release of Puma & the Dolphin’s Primitive EP (see my review here). Following this, the label turned its sights on the work of VЯOMB, a cult artist who has been operating for decades in Quebec’s experimental underground. Though I regretfully didn’t find time to review the Origami 12” last year, I’ll take space here to mention that across the release, VЯOMB mangles and mutates textures of warehouse rave and acid techno into expanses of alien industrial madness, and twists, bends, and contorts an array of sci-fi sound structures into ever-evolving displays of electro-acoustic intensity. As for Chambre Noire’s third outing CN003—which is the focus of this piece—the label changed its approach toward limited intimacy by dropping a small-press lathe cut 10”. The A-side of this release is given over to Fareed (aka Benoit Legrain), who whips up a fried and frenzied slab of techno tribalism, wherein sub-bass pressure waves and stuttering club drums anchor hip-house vocal cut ups and layers of polyrhythmic madness. And splitting the release with Fareed is Peter Bunzinelli, the person behind Chambre Noire and a name readers of this blog should be well familiar with, for I’ve also discussed his work in the context of the amazing _Montreal Pleiades _mini-comp on Cosmic Tones, and his La Foresta Segreta b​/​w The Five Tibetans 7”. Here on the B-side of CN003, Bunzinelli throws down a slab of breakbeat rave sorcery, though rather than employ euphoric melodies, trance-like atmospherics, or liquid acid lines, he instead shrouds the rhythms in unintelligible radio transmissions and layers of demented noise, dissonant distortion, and caustic drone.

Fareed / Bunzinelli - CN003 (Chambre Noire, 2020) Fareed’s “Nord” begins with hypnotizing feminine vocal cut ups and industrial beats rolling through static. A massive kick drum enters—as do hand drums and energetic cymbal phrases—and the whole thing beings taking on the feel of a tribal dancefloor stomp. Beats momentarily pull away as a panorama of metals moves across the spectrum, and as we barrel back down into the groove, stormfronts of pounding sub bass beat against the body while the lysergic hip hop vocal samples are further cut-up and pushed towards abstraction. Entrancing displays of metallic percussion move in and out of the mix and hand drums work through ever-evolving polyrhythms while double-time cymbal patterns pulse at lightspeed.  At some point the whole spectrum filters through a white noise wormhole before slamming back towards rainforest techno ceremonialism, and as bursts of computronic noise pan side-to-side, the rolling polyrhythms grow ever more manic and intense. Whooshing engines rev up and down in pitch before the mix reduces to metalloid clatter, and as the ritualized rhythm storms return—bringing with it subsonic basslines that threaten to cave in the chest—an infinitude of drum rolls spreads out in every direction…as if crazed shamanic beings in uncountable numbers are beating forest drums and sheets of steel at inhuman speeds. It all comes together as a strange merging of hip house modernism and militant techno tribalism, wherein chopped hip hop vocal flows are repurposed as ecstatic chants amidst an ever-morphing ritual of sub bass physicality and hyperkinetic drum psychedelia. And as the track comes to a close, everything cuts way, leaving rusted scraps, corroded wind chimes, and hollowed stones to blow in a gentle wind.

Bunzinelli’s “Metagryne Bicolumnata” comes to life on a vintage breakbeat bounce, with granular filtering and old skool artifacts obscuring the decade of origin. A mutating rave bassline enters…this incredible subsonic slide the gets the body jacking…and after a hard hitting snare pattern drops, further layers of mesmeric percussive detritus flow into the stereo field. While the breaks continue slamming, Bunzinelli conjures up strange alien soundscapes—as mutating clouds of metallic ether obscure garbled satellite broadcasts and decaying radiowave transmissions—and later, as the kick drops away, tribal-tinged snare and cymbal pyrotechnics work the mind while the body continues vibing on that hypno-slide bass groove. When the bass drum returns, masculine vocal samples are cut up into trance-like tracers, though any sense of euphoria is soon blasted away by demonic clouds of scraping distortion…the effect like some sort of deranged noise rock guitar performance crashing against a b-boy breakdance rhythm track. Percussive elements continue adding and subtracting to the mix while morphing and mutating, wavefronts of sonic terrorism merge together with chemical clouds of screaming drone, and as the song progresses, the vibes of throwback 90s revivalism are increasingly subverted, so that what began as a body-popping break track instead reveals itself as something quite experimental. Towards the end, stretches are given over to rhythmic ecstasy, with beats accented by chopping vocal sequences and psychosomatic dub fx growing ever more fried and freaky. And as quick as the song began, it all cuts away in a flash.
