DCMK Blu-rays

A list of Detective Conan and Magic Kaito content with physical HD releases.

This won't be comprehensive by any means; I'm going to be focusing on Japanese, German, and United States releases because these are the ones that I own and am most familiar with. I believe that many of the films are also available on Blu-ray in several countries, dubbed in several languages, but I don't have much concrete knowledge about that at this moment. Please feel free to add any information!

That said, the main thing to know about Detective Conan Blu-rays is that... they kind of don't really exist. The television series is (mainly, more on this later) released on DVD only in Japan, usually with the equivalent of four episodes per disc, sold at 4,620 yen each. They're grouped in "Parts," with up to 10 Volumes per Part, and the next release, on June 23rd, will be Part 31, Volume 3, containing episodes 1007, 1008, 1010, and 1013.

A handful of episodes are released on Blu-ray via collections in Japan; there are the Treasured Selections and Akai Family TV Selections. But with a series running over 1,000 episodes, it really is just a handful of episodes available in these collections.

With the Treasured Selections, you can get 67 episodes on Blu-ray:

Beyond these, the TV-original specials Episodes 804-805 ("Conan and Ebizo's Kabuki Juhachiban Mystery") and Episodes 965-968 ("Kaiju Gomera VS Kamen Yaiba"), plus the canon Episodes 927-928 ("The Scarlet School Trip"), are also available on Blu-ray.

Finally, special edition Blu-rays for Movies 17-25 include a second disc containing the movie's tie-in anime episode... but that second disc is likely a DVD, speaking as someone who doesn't own any of these but does own the Japanese special edition Blu-rays for Movies 14 through 16, where the second discs are, indeed, DVDs.

German Blu-rays

Outside of Japan, Germany is currently releasing boxed sets of the Detective Conan series starting from Episode 1. At this time, these are the only physical releases of the remastered footage (which make a big difference), and they include Japanese and German audio (but any German-dubbed songs are omitted). Three boxes are available now, covering Episodes 1 to 96 (or 102 with the international numbering); a fourth box is set to be released on May 19th, covering up until Episode 122 (or 129 with the international numbering).

Do note that these releases edit the name boxes in a way that can't be turned off, however.

Films, Specials, and Magic Kaito

In Japan, there are Blu-ray releases for:

The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa: The Two Worst Days in History

Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small

Magic Kaito and Magic Kaito 1412

In Germany, all of the same content is available on Blu-ray. There's also a Blu-ray release for The Scarlet Alibi, and I believe that they're the only ones with a physical HD release of Gosho Aoyama's Collection of Short Stories as well.

In the United States, there are Blu-ray releases for:

Films 19-23

Both Lupin crossovers

Episode One: The Great Detective Turned Small

As far as I'm aware, there are no HD releases anywhere of the OVAs. They're available on DVD in Japan, either separately or via four "Secret File" compilations (though these only cover OVAs 1-9).

There also aren't any HD releases of the Magic/Bonus files, but DVDs are included with the Japanese special edition versions of Movies 12-16. They're also available for individual purchase in Japan as well.

TV Specials 1, 2, and 4 (with 3 being the Lupin special, 5 being The Disappearance of Conan Edogawa, and 6 being Episode One) seem to be DVD only, too. Actually, I'm not sure if TV Special 1,"Time Travel of the Silver Sky," is available on disc at all? But TV Special 2, "Black History," is said to be included with the Japanese special edition DVD of the second live-action drama special, and TV Special 4, "Fugitive: Kogoro Mori," is included on the Part 24, Volume 7 DVD.

TV Special 7, "Love Story at Police Headquarters ~Wedding Eve~," might be included on Blu-ray in Japan with the special edition of Movie 25, but I can't confirm if that disc is a Blu-ray or DVD right now (and the same goes for The Scarlet Alibi, included with the special edition of Movie 24 in Japan).

The eight VHS-only Shogakukan Illustrated Encyclopedia Series tapes are obviously not available in HD, either.

Tl;dr?

So, in short, combining releases and eliminating the not-remastered Treasured Selections, you can find 186 episodes on Blu-ray right now (with more on the way with the fourth Detektiv Conan box). You can also get all of the films and Magic Kaito series, plus a few specials, in HD.

And I think that's all I've got! Feel free to add more information if you know any! I am desperate to physically own more HD DCMK content.

EDIT: I've done some more digging, and from what I can tell, starting with Movie 24, the Japanese special edition Blu-rays for the films changed the bonus second disc from a DVD to a Blu-ray instead. This means that Episode 1,002, "The Beika City Shopping Center Garbage Bin Mystery," included with the special edition of Movie 24, as well as Episode 1,039, "The Flying Jack-o'-lantern," included with the special edition of Movie 25, are available on Blu-ray, too. So, a more accurate number of episodes that have been released on Blu-ray (in HD) at this time is actually 188. Further, this confirms that The Scarlet Alibi and TV Special 7 are also available on Blu-ray in Japan.

Additionally, though I have provided a couple of links throughout this post, the Detective Conan World wiki deserves a bigger shout out than I initially gave; their "Collectibles" page, and particularly their "Japanese Blu-ray" article, were a huge help in compiling the information laid out here. Many, many thanks to the contributors.

And while I'm here, for those interested in English-language releases specifically, Magic's Detective Agency is a fantastically detailed resource for every DVD released by FUNimation (Volumes, Season Sets, and Films). They're not HD releases, true, but at the time, they're the only physical releases of any episodes and the first six films in English.

Finally, I also discovered that a fifth Detektiv Conan box is set to be released on July 21st! This should mean that remastered episodes up until 145 (or 155 with the international numbering) will be available on Blu-ray, and it bodes well for these releases to continue. Hopefully, there will be physical releases of the remastered footage in other countries, too!

so this year I ~challenged myself to post a gifset once a week, because making gifsets is something I enjoy very much and can always improve in but literally cannot do for money or lbr meaningful validation and I am historically bad at doing things that fit those categories!

Least popular overall: A Community set of Jeff making a Dane Cook joke, coming in at a grand total of 39 notes. This was actually a remake of a set I made YEARS ago because I think it's a great joke lmao. A set doomed imo by the youths on my lawn not knowing who Dane Cook is and also tbf Jeff as the only featured study group character.

Honorable mention to the Rangers World Series set I made, but I'm actually floored and delighted that it got 43 notes. There are dozens of us!!

The Dr. Cox set was a mostly-for-me fave. The Always Sunny set happened because I thought the Aaron Paul/Bryan Cranston episode was one of the funniest the show has had in years; that episode was also what finally pushed me into watching Breaking Bad this year, which I mostly really enjoyed lol.

The set I made from the finale of The Bear s2 ended up the sixth most popular set of the year with 1k+ notes and it's probably the set I most notice on my activity page every week. It does look really nice but also, I see you, Syd/Richie fandom, and I hear your siren song. Maybe in 2024...

So OK! Hey! I set a meaningless fun goal and accomplished it!! I'm not setting another specific gif goal for 2024 so will probably be a lot more sporadic. Or not! Who knows!

Supernatural fans missing their favorite fantasy drama after it ended after 15 seasons in 2020 can look forward to cast-heavy rewatch podcast series.

Richard Speight Jr. and Rob Benedict, who recurred on The CW drama series as the angel Gabriel and God, respectively, are hosting a podcast – Supernatural Then and Now – that will give an insider’s perspective on the show.

Each episode of the show, which launches on January 24, will feature cast, crew, and producers with stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki kicking off the first two episodes.

It comes from Story Mill Media, the podcast company set up by former NBC exec Steven Hein.

Speight and Benedict will lead conversations with guests about behind-the-scenes moments, stories from set and the writers’ room, and peel back the layers of the show to give fans a deeper understanding of both the mythology and the process.

The podcast will be written by Jessica Mason, author of The Binge Watcher’s Guide to Supernatural: An Unofficial Companion.

Supernatural Then and Now will feature original music from composers from the series, Christopher Lennertz and Tim Wynn and it will be recorded at their Sonic Fuel Studios.

Bob Singer, Supernatural executive producer said, “Rob and Rich are the perfect people to do this. Not only did they play some of the series’ most iconic characters, but they’ve been stewards of the show to the fans for over a decade, hosting popular events and conventions across the country.”

Speight added, “We are incredibly grateful for the support the fans of Supernatural have given us over the years. We’re excited to be a part of this special gift to the fans that will arrive just in time for Dean Winchesters’ birthday on, January 24th.”

Benedict said, “This is a great way for the cast, crew and producers to continue and deepen their relationship with the fans. Even though the series has come to an end, the fans continue to be an incredibly tight and supportive community.”

Hein added, “I’m very excited Rob and Rich are doing this podcast. They’re both very handsome, which is great for audio.”

We never really know the celebrities (Noah would laugh at being called a celebrity) who capture our hearts. We often become endeared to a character they play, or a song or album that speaks to us in some way. Then, we might fall a little harder, dig a little deeper, because their work is so impactful that we want more of it, and to maybe understand a little bit about where that depth of talent comes from.

Depending on their own level of comfort with sharing and/or social media savvy/affinity, we may be lucky enough to get a glimpse of who they are as a person, the relationships they've built, and the things that matter to them. But that's never the whole picture. That's not for us to know, because of course we don't really know them. So all we can do is continue to enjoy and appreciate them (and perhaps fanperson in private and anonymous spaces), and hope that the image and persona we've created for them comes close to who they really are.

I'll never know the real Noah Reid, but it sure doesn't hurt that every person who has had a chance to work with him provides both solicited and unsolicited praise for his talent, his professionalism, his kindness, and his humanity. This is someone who I'm proud to be a fan of.

Did they seriously just leave five to go off on his own in the finale? Wtf is he gonna do? My guy doesn't have any money, he looks like a minor so he can't get a job or a place to live, he doesn't have his powers so he can't fight nearly as well, and they just left him to his own devices? Yeah, that certainly can't end horribly.

As threatened promised, here is an accounting of how Gilmore Girls and various shows that also featured various cast members were watched by the Netflix faithful in the first half of 2024

This includes shows that appeared on Netflix only. So Heroes, The Handmaid's Tale, Parenthood, The Good Wife, etc are not included.

Some of the numbers may look funky because the views are the amount of hours watched divided by how many episodes there were and not all of these shows have the same number of episodes.

However, let us proceed.

Gilmore Girls season one is ranked the highest at #297 (out of 6800 series) with 88.6 million hours watched for a total of 5.8 million views.

Next up comes The Resident, the medical drama Matt Czuchry headlined for most of the last decade. I have been told it is the most bizarre medical show to ever exist. So it can't be that weird. Anyway, it comes in at #325 with 55.9 million hours watched and 5.5 million views.

Gilmore Girls season 2 comes in at #325 with 81.2 million hours watched and 5.1 million views.

Gilmore Girls season 3 ranks at #394 with 76.9 million hours watched and 4.8 million views.

Gilmore Girls season 4 comes in at #412 with 75.3 million hours watched and 4.7 million views.

Gilmore Girls season 5 follows at #413 with 74.8 million hours watched and 4.7 million views.

Unfortunately, many people also chose to watch season 6 after that, which ranks at #476 with 68.4 million hours watched and 4.3 million views.

A few observations here: while many fans will prefer the early seasons as opposed to the latter ones and vice versa, it appears that there was a huge drop in the show's viewership from S1 to S2 and then to S3, but a lot of fans watched S3, S4, and S5 together before a bunch of them dropped off instead of watching S6. I guess people are binging the whole thing, then, before S6 forces them to run away screaming. This was not the way the ratings worked in real time: S2 and S3 were hugely popular, S4 lost half the audience, and then the ratings went up slightly for S5.

Coming in next is The Resident S2 at #539 with 66.3 million hours viewed and 3.9 million views.

Gilmore Girls finishes off its OS run with S7 ranking at #540 with 60.7 million hours watched and 3.9 million views.

Finally, This Is Us enters the chat, for those unfortunate souls who felt like watching hour after hour of peak DILFness and emotional masochism, which I guess is worth it for getting to spend time with the cutest married TV couple of all time. They are ranked at #542 with 49.3 million hours watched and 3.9 million views.

The Resident S3 follows at #687 with 46.8 million hours watched and 3.2 million views, followed by The Resident S4 at #748 with 30.5 million hours watched and 3 million views.

Next up is....AYITL, which may or may not be canon depending on who you listen to. It ranks at #836 with 17.6 million hours watched and 2.8 million views.

That's still a pretty significant number given that the experiment is largely seen as a failure, not that this stops fans from being whipped into a frenzy at the mere suggestion of a sequel eight years later, in the vain hope that ASP will write a satisfying ending someday. As I said yesterday, there was a rumor on DeuxMoi a while back that claimed that Netflix was planning on a sequel, but Alexis (who hasn't worked in the industry in the past few years) said hell no and it didn't happen. It's probably best left that way.

This Is Us season 2 ranks at #859 with 34.3 million hours watched and 2.7 million views. Hope y'all enjoyed your head getting stomped on and splattered against the wall.

The Resident S5 follows at #897 with 43.2 hours watched and 2.6 million views.

So I've never watched this show because of what happens at the beginning of S5. Apparently Conrad (Matt) and Nic (Emily Van Camp, of Everwood/Brothers and Sisters/Revenge fame) had an epic romance that culminated in a marriage and a child, but then Van Camp wanted to leave and Nic uh....exited the narrative. It wasn't something that could be avoided, but it's put me off watching the show. I guess people didn't mind because the views didn't drop too much after this.

This Is Us season 3 comes in at #1019 with 29.9 million hours viewed and 2.3 million views. This is the last of the Jack heavy seasons and I never quite loved the show the same after this.

The Resident S6 ranks at #1028 with 22 million hours viewed and 2.3 million views.

Next up, we have season 4 of This Is Us, which comes in at #1123 with 27.5 million hours viewed and 2.1 million views. In my opinion, this was the last real quality season of the show. There's not as much Jack, but we do start the roller coaster of the super flash forwards and the soap opera of who is going to be Kevin's wife and/or baby mama, which I rather enjoyed, because he is a chaotic, messy slut and I loved that

Along with your many, many, many other women, Kev. Anyway.

Season 6 of This Is Us came in at #1192 with 25.7 million hours viewed and 2 million viewed, while This Is Us S5 came in at #1196 with 23.1 million hours viewed and 2 million views. Season 6 only had two more episodes than S5 and they were both all over the place, so I think there is something here and it's probably mostly....the COVID stuff and Randall's deeply ridiculous Zombie Mom storyline. Madison and Kevin might have been too much for some people as well, although I actually rooted for them. It does seem since the last four seasons are relatively close in numbers that if you made it to S3 you most likely watched the rest of it. I could never, but I guess some people love pain.

But we did get that reunion at the end.

Okay, ranked below all of them is Supernatural.

I'm not going to do all 15 seasons, but season 1 comes in at #1618 with 22 million hours viewed and 1.4 million views and the lowest ranked is season #15 at #3115 with 7.1 million hours viewed and 500,000 views. The views drop below 1 million after season 5. I think the show has lost a bit of its luster, although that doesn't keep the clickbait media from talking about season 16 like it's a done deal.

So what have we learned, other than that Matt's show was pretty popular, Milo fans are masochists, and people inexplicably keep watching AYITL? This fanbase remains active even after twenty years. Gawd help us.
