18 July 1800 || Epsom, Surrey 

There were moments when navigating society as Mr. Jacobs became a trial. If the constant changing wasn’t enough (for any well-dressed gentleman had an outfit for every occasion, same as a lady) running across town from a luncheon, to the club, then back again for dinner was enough to exhaust the most robust endurance. The hours were abominable. Even he, who was accustomed to lingering at a ball well into the morning, could not stay up until the twilight hours every night. 

But there were times, like now, when all of the late nights, early mornings, and coordination necessary to balance a social calendar extensive enough for two people felt worth it. Epsom Downs was alive like a hive, buzzing with excitement. A traffic jam of my horses and jockeys stomped across the green, readying themselves for the race. A few yards off, on the other side of the fence, gentlemen and ladies huddled around the ledger at betting post clamoring to place bets on his name. 

A nibble to his ear pulled Adelson away from his reverie. Adelson scowled and turned to Thisbe, whose dark eyes seemed to want to remind him who really competing this afternoon.

Adelson gave Thisbe’s dappled flank a consoling pat. “Yes, yes. Let’s finish tacking you up.” 

As he had long come to rely on himself instead of a groomsman, readying the horse was an easy affair. Sade, girth, bit, bridle, reins. The ritual was so automatic he could let his attention wander. 

Amid the clamoring crowd, a familiar smile caught his eye. He dropped the reins abruptly, earning a huff from Thisbe which Adelson ignored in favor of calling out. “Harry!” He frowned slightly, the man didn’t seem to hear him. He tried again, waving a hand this time. “Harry! Come to see me win, did you?”
