A cosh is a kind of club, made fast to the wrist with a thong so as to hand when not in use, and leave the hand free. The man has no cap, shoulder title, badge or tunic buttons, because, if he were killed in the enemy's trench, these might tell the enemy things which otherwise the enemy could only learn by success in a raid of his own.

Thomas Benjamin Kennington,  pintor de género, realista social y retratista británico

Thomas Benjamin Kennington (7 de abril de 1856 - 10 de diciembre de 1916) fue un pintor de género , realista social y retratista británico . Fue miembro fundador del New English Art Club (NEAC) y de la Imperial Arts League . Kennington nació en Grimsby en Lincolnshire y se formó en arte en la Escuela de Arte de Liverpool (ganando una medalla de oro), el Royal College of Art (RCA) en Londres y la Académie Julian en París, donde estudió con   Bougereau y Robert- . Fleury . [1] Más tarde se mudó a Chelsea en Londres. [2] Expuso en la Royal Academy de Londres de 1880 a 1916, y también mostró regularmente su trabajo en la Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) en Suffolk Street y la galería Grosvenor. [3] Fue miembro fundador y primer secretario del New English Art Club (desde 1886), y también fundó la Imperial Arts League , cuyo propósito declarado era "proteger y promover los intereses de los artistas e informar, asesorar y asistir". ...". [4] Ganó una medalla de bronce en la Exposición Universal de 1889. [2] Kennington se hizo conocido no solo por sus pinturas idealizadas de escenas domésticas y de la vida cotidiana, sino también por sus obras de realismo social. Pinturas como Orphans (1885, Tate , Londres), Widowed and fatherless (1885), Homeless (1890) y The pellizc of poor (1891), representaban las duras realidades de la vida de los pobres en Gran Bretaña de una manera que jugaba con las emociones del espectador. Se ha sugerido que pudo haber sido influenciado por el pintor español Murillo (1618-1682), cuya obra también presentaba a niños de la calle. Pintó tanto al óleo como a la acuarela . [2]

Kennington murió en Londres el 10 de diciembre de 1916. Su hijo Eric Kennington (1888-1960) también fue artista, ilustrador y escultor.
