disclaimer: I don't have patterns for Runaan's clothes, just pointers, because I was winging it at that point x_x

EDIT: if anyone wants to try to make these and struggles at some point (or needs those additional patterns), feel free to just reach out to me and I'll do what I can to help. Don't worry, you won't be overstepping at all and I'll more than gladly help a fellow TDP fan!

okay, so for the BODIES I used a pattern from a book called "Crochet Cute Dolls With Mix-and-Match Outfits" by Miya:

it's a purchasable book so I'd rather not share it publicly 👀

I'm sharing my own patterns below:

EARS

Sc 4 in a magic ring (4). Slst into the first st and ch 1.

Sc in each st (4). Slst and ch 1.

Sc, inc 2, sc (6). Slst and ch 1.

Sc in each st (6). Slst and ch 1.

Sc 2, inc 2, sc 2 (8). Slst and ch 1.

Sc in each st (8). Slst and ch 1.

Sc 3, inc 2, sc 3 (10). Slst and ch 1.

Sc in each st (10). Slst and ch 1.

Sc 3, dec 2, sc 3 (8). Slst and ch 1.

Fold the ear in half and sc 4 the two sides together (4). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

HORNS

Using 2,5 mm hook size: sc 4 in a magic ring (4). Slst & ch 1.

Slst 3, sc 5 (8). Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the horn onto the head.

I also used a little bit of wire to help accentuate the curvature of the horns. I did play with increases and decreases in the pattern so they do curve on their own but I thought the wire might be a nice failsafe.

Here are patterns for all of ETHARI'S CLOTHES:

It was my first time making patterns and I was in a bit of a rush to finish him before his birthday so they're not perfect, but if you ever need help with them, just hmu, we'll figure it out.

I first made his boots and then his pants in order to make sure I didn't mess up the length. Then the crop top and finally the belt to fill the space in between. Now I'm thinking that perhaps removing one row of single crochets from the crop top and adding it to the belt might give him a look more accurate to his original design but I think the way I did it he also turned out okay so it's just an option.

There are clasps at the back of his crop top and belt, and on Runaan's vest. The flap is sewn onto the belt but if you want it to be removable, just add more rows in purple and stuff it in between the belt and the doll while closing the clasp.

Unfortunately, for RUNAAN'S CLOTHES, the notes were a mess and I don't really have anything. They're similar to Ethari's with slight changes:

his pants don't have the increases, they're just sc for ~7 or 8 rows, then joining and continuing just like with Ethari's (also hmu if you need a diagram showing how to join the pant legs);

his boots are the same as Ethari's up to row 12, in row 13 I did bigger stitches in the middle - go from sc to hdc, then dc, back to hdc and continue with sc (if you want that part to be higher, go sc, hdc, dc, tc, dc, hdc, sc); then for row 14 change colour to brown and slst around;

his vest is a foundation chain of the desired length (I think I did about 36 but it ended up being a bit too loose - it all depends on your own doll's size), then 4 rows of dc - but in the 3rd row I did 2 dc-2-tog (about 8-9 sts from both edges, right below the arms holes, 1 per arm hole), then in row 5 I did ~8 dc, then ch 4/5, skip 3/4 (arm hole), dc 8, ch 4/5, skip 4/5 and dc in each st until the end of the row. Join yarn at the edge of the arm hole and ch ~8 and slst into the other corner for the double strap. (I have a similar diagram to show more or less what's going on)

PENDANTS

In purple, sc 6 in a magic ring, but while doing the 6th, do an invisible colour change to gray (6).

Slst around (6). Slst into the first st and fasten off, weave in the ends.

Then, join yellow yarn in that last slst and ch 12 (add or remove chains to get the desired length) and fasten off but leave a long tail end to tie it at the back. Repeat the same process in the same slst. Then, you can tie the ends at the back, make knots and trim.

HORN CUFFS

Ch 14. Slst into the first ch, ch 1.

Sc 14 (14). Slst into the first st and ch 1. Flip so you work normally.

Sc 3, dec, sc 4, dec, sc 3 (12). Slst and ch 1.

Sc in each st (12). Slst and ch 1.

Sc 4, hdc, dc 2, hdc, sc 4 (12). Slst and ch 1.

Slst around (12). Fasten off and weave in the ends. For Ethari's cuffs, make a few vertical sts in turquoise somewhere in the middle at the front for the gems (wrap the yarn vertically a few times around a stitch).

HORN TIPS (ETHARI)

Sc 5 in a magic ring (5). Slst into the first st and ch 1.

Sc in each st (5). Slst and ch 1.

Inc, sc 2, inc, sc (7). Slst and ch 1.

Sc in each st (7). Slst. Fasten off and weave in the ends. You might have to stretch it out with something like a pen tip to make sure they fit.

Some of my trial and error for a new pattern I'm designing! I haven't designed a pattern this complex in ages, but it's a fun challenge. The part frustrating me most is attempting to replicate Ethari's delicate and intricate craftsmanship.

I'm stuck with a brace on the wrist of my dominant hand because I've been pushing myself too hard, and being a physically disabled artist with ADHD is never fun, so! Since I am bored, have a lil thing of me (once again) taking the Artist Woes out on Ethari.

Ethari is making Rayla lunch when his wrist starts acting up. He doesn't think much of it because he has work to get back to. But later that evening, the soreness still hasn't gone away.

The next morning, it's feeling a little better. Good! He's behind on work because his wrist was being a pain the day before. So he throws himself back into his work, barely coming up for air between being behind on commissions and the Hyperfocusing.

As he's putting things away for the night, his wrist starts hurting worse than it did the night before. But never mind that, he has a daughter to tuck into bed and then a husband to cuddle.

Ethari continues to ignore his worsening wrist--and eventually, elbow--pain and continues throwing himself into his work. His wrist has been setting him back, but he's almost caught up... until Runaan can't take it anymore.

Noticing the signs of both a burnout and an injury, Runaan forces his husband to take care of himself. He has Ethari put on one of the wrist braces he has (that Ethari made Runaan himself), makes Ethari tea, and brings Ethari things to do that don't require his dominant hand.

Ethari is exhausted, but he's also bored. He is so, so bored. If he doesn't have Runaan's brace on, he's icing his wrist, sleeping, or showering. If he isn't sitting doing nothing, he's pacing.

After a couple days, he just needs to do something.

So he just starts following Runaan around and watching him lovingly because there's no better thing to do when you're sick than be bisexual for your husband.

Shadowpaws for the Year of the Shadowpaw, this is very fortuitous! I must prop them next to each other in my window sill, for Very Serious Celebration Reasons. Thank you, they're very cute.

Moonshadows have many terms for the first new Moon of the year. Moonturn, Newrise, Oldenpast - for the last year and the things done in the dark as it dies, the Quickening - for that first new sliver of light and the return of the Moon's power. Ethari likes to brush his teeth and blow me a minty kiss on this day, and he calls it the Freshening. "A breath of fresh air for the new year," he teases me, every year. Luckily, I find this hilarious, because he's cute. And minty. Mmmm. there is a secret ritual that must follow the Freshening, shh you'll never guess what

Moonturn is a sort of antilogy moment in the Moonshadow calendar. New Moons are usually spent in quiet, but the new lunar year is an exception, in the same category as eclipses: an event out of the ordinary schedule, celebrated not because it is good or bad but because it exists to remind us why we have a schedule at all.

And so, for Moonturn, we party. Dancing and food and plenty of Shadowpaw-themed things. Ethari has been training Tethu to perform the Dance of the Shadowpaw for months, and they're very excited. I am, perhaps, less so, since I know firsthand how hard Tethu's tail can strike when he's spinning. But I'll dance anyway. I'm very generous with my time for those I love.

In trade for your lovely shadowpaws, please accept this shadowpaw on a stick in return. *hands you a fluffy cotton candy shadowpaw head* There's a light enchantment on it which lets you growl like a shadowpaw while you're eating it. Please try not to scare too many elflings with it? I'd take it as a personal favor.

Hey Ethari! I feel like I’m drowning. I’m trying so hard to overcome some really hard stuff that life threw at me and I’m going to counseling weekly and taking medicine and it still doesn’t feel like enough. My counselor tells me about the importance of holding myself sacred and is proud of me. I’m sharing all my trauma and getting good therapy. But I still have a hard time living each day and feeling hope that I will be motivated in the future. What would you say to your child if this was them?

I would hold you tight and tell you that I love you, so very much, and I’d miss you like an actual hole in my chest if you were gone. I’d say that your past is not the boss of you, that time only flows one way, and that the darkness will sink to the bottom of the stream in time, while the blossom will still float on the top. 

The way may seem murky now, and you might not even feel the tug of the current at all. But it’s there. And it will clear. It will.

But don’t wait on that. Your mind and body need something to do. It truly doesn’t matter what you choose, or how often you manage to do it. Binge a show, draw stick people, take up crochet, hike, take pictures of bees on flowers or ants on the sidewalk like they’re superstars. Whatever. You. Want. It doesn’t matter, and you can change it as often as you like. Doing is a beautiful thing, no matter what you do. So do. And be. Be human. Be here. And let time have its way with your past.

There are two universal solvents in this universe: water and time. Time often works faster. Needs less soap, too. A very natural process. Let it do its work and help you find your balance again. Please take care.

y'all seemed to quite like the little crocheted ruthari (TY 💘) so i thought maybe some of you would be interested in a few close-ups 👀

so. first up, runaan. he has wire inside so he has some degree of movement, but he's also quite stuffed and the movement is unfortunately limited

i've been crocheting for a year, so the idea of coming up with my own patterns for his clothes was terrifying. therefore, i ended up doing just his boots, pants and the vest (it's hot in the silvergrove this time of the year, he doesn't need the shirt or the coat 😅), plus of course the horn cuffs. all accesories are removable of course. the original idea for the pendant was for it to be just one strand with a loop at the end but it didn't look good at all so i switched to something way simpler and more effective)

i suck at embroidery and i hate it but what can you do 🫠

so i made runaan first and he was going to be a little birthday gift to myself, but ofc it'd be criminal to make only him and the plan has always been to make him a little ethari too. i finished him on the 5th so i guess it all ended up being a gift for him 🤣

once i saw his turnarounds, though, it took me quite some time to hype myself up to actually start making him, because it's so many different clothes with no existing patterns and they're all so detailed (runaan's were too but i had gained some confidence while making him and wanted to work on ethari properly) 😩 still, i somehow did it.

i did change the flap of fabric hanging from his belt as i had no way of making a smooth ombre transition from purple to dark turquoise like he actually has it - so instead of 2 jarring colours, it's 4 jarring colours 😂 and i also didn't do the embroidery on that part and it made me very happy - especially since there was plenty of embroidery i couldn't skip

and just like with runaan, all of his articles of clothing are removable (the flap is sewn onto the belt, and the green patches are sewn onto the boots but other than that, everything is separate)

there is, however, one issue 😅 i think it stems from a couple of choices i made: 1. i used a different, slightly thicker type of yarn for ethari's body than i did for runaan; 2. i used a 3,0 mm hook instead of 2,5 mm; and 3. i messed up the patterns for ethari's limbs (i did them in rounds instead of rows; it was late and i was tired and by the time i realised that, i was on the 3rd one & couldn't be bothered to scrap them all - which i probably should have done XD oh well).

the first 2 choices were deliberate as ethari is canonically a little bit taller than runaan, but umm...

let's just assume elves grow until they're 40 or so, and so after 2 years in the coin, runaan stayed behind 😅

oh, and i also wanted them to be able to hold hands so they have magnets in their hands but in the end, they weren't strong enough to still work through two layers of yarn ☹️ i guess i could still use a little clasp but we'll see about that

so yeah. here they are 😊

I finished Ethari! I'm super proud of him, especially with how much detail there is on his skin and clothes. He is going on my queer bookshelf for sure.

I want to do the rest of the moonfam next, but I have some other projects that need my attention first. Hopefully next month I'll be able to return to the projects I've set aside!

Been a while since I posted, but I've been working on some other crochet stuff that needed my attention. I've also been a bit burnt out lately. But here's a WIP of Ethari! The face markings were a pain to do and I'm not looking forward to the shoulder markings, but I'm proud of them.

I'm currently running around like a madman trying to figure out everyone's crocheted Christmas presents, so I present to you a headcanon:

Ethari likes to make all his family and friends little gifts for the holidays. His parents, siblings, cousins, aunts, uncles, in-laws husband, daughter, Lain, Tiadrin, etc. And like any respectable artist, he doesn't start making anything until two weeks before the actual holiday. So he'll be running around in an ADHD frenzy going a little insane trying to balance making his family and friends' gifts with what the village needs, make space for all the finished gifts, and keep his husband's gift a secret while said husband makes sure he's still functioning.

He ends up needing a week to recover after the holidays.

So I had an idea for a ruthari Stardust AU. That's it, those are my thoughts xD

I was thinking Yvaine!Runaan and Tristan!Ethari, but my thoughts were mainly on their meet-ugly and when Tristan pushes Yvaine into the bushes to hide her glowing from the passerby. I don't know what would happen with the royalty plotline, nor do I care. Yvaine and Tristan are adorable and so are Runaan and Ethari, and I love those two images I have of the Stardust AU 🥰

I honestly don't know why this one is still on my ideas list, I've already begun designing and crocheting him lmao. I was inspired to design a Meg!Baz while watching Hercules with the discord the other month!

Do you like games? I mean is there such a thing like a gaming evening with ethari and rayla? Cards, tabletop? And if u play against each other - would you let ethari or Rayla win, when they look at you with biiiiig puppy eyes?

Gaming nights are every Tuesday after dinner, between the hours of six and eight, with a maximum of two treats per game, and only if all homework has been completed prior. Yes, even arithmetic, Rayla. The game we play is on weekly rotation, since all of us prefer differently, though should that week's nominee wish to give up their slot to another family member, they are free to do so. Rayla uses all manner of persuasion, puppy eyes included, invoking the Birthday Clause, threatening to sleep until next week, etc. Of course, this is all hypothetical. I never give in to these threats. I am a strong disciplinarian, yes I am.

Ethari doesn't so much like games as he likes the time together, so is not so picky about what we play, but if forced to choose, he will undoubtedly throw the game away entirely and bring out the needles for a lesson in crochet. Rayla likes the games where she can express herself. And by that I mean the ones where she can throw things at other things and screech her victory from atop the sofa.

The games I enjoy lead to quieter, more civilized evenings: six primals, high-stakes cards. My personal favorite is a human creation called kings and horses. There is something about the way the pieces move, the way you face off with your opponent so intently, that reminds me of war. And yet, it is nothing alike. There is no fear, no pain. Thoughts are conducted free of constraint, in comfort and the quiet of your living room. If only all battles could be conducted so. Ethari is misleadingly skilled. For an elf of such whimsy, he can be incredibly focused, and his wits are killer. Rayla finds these games tedious and so has dubbed herself the unabashed commentator. Her words are terse, comically grotesque, and utterly Tiadrin. Ethari doesn't need to plead to win. He's won me more times than is seemly for an assassin of my years, but I forgive him because he's my husband.

The best moments of my life are those spent with my family, and I can only wish and dream that in those last days we had together, we'd spent more of it at play.
