Originally released on cassette through Evening Chants, Kwaidan’s reputation eventually grew to such an extent that it was named one of the year’s best experimental albums by Pitchfork. To coincide with the first time vinyl release of Kwaidan, we have a mix from Meitei to share with you for Bleep Mix #81. Meitei says - ’This mix is based on some old Japanese music that I have picked with the current Meitei theme of the “lost Japanese mood” as a reference. I remixed and edited the traditional music in my own style. There are places in Japan where the scenery expressed in this mix still survives. What will they look like in the new Japanese era “Reiwa”? At least I think it’s interesting to personally edit the footprints of the previous era to make such a mix. This made it possible to touch a world that I don’t even know.’

Shipping now! @eveningchants presents Melting Bridge - We Are Tomorrow via @phantom.limb distro in the EU. The label that brought us @meitei.kwaidan ‘s stunning Kwaidan tape last year is back with more exploratory electronic flame business, this time from 🇹🇼 Taiwanese duo Melting Bridge. This pair use synth, found sound and even guitar in almost an industrial textural fashion, but through a very serene, almost kosmiche filter. The album creates rich, almost kaleidoscope scapes, not a billion miles away from Julian House’s Focus Group, but rather than envoking 70s British tv culture and horror/folklore, this addresses an altogether more Asian slant, with nods to beautiful pentatonic folk passages, samples of beautifully dense games arcades of yore, fm-synth pad beds and gentle kyoto improv, while mallets and bells chime playfully in the back, suggesting an examination of the links or clashes between these two beautiful environments and areas of culture.
