The journey to growing Amalungelo Training Group
Amalungelo Training Group (ATG) is a 100% black owned accredited training service provider, specialising in soft skills training & consulting. The company offers tailor made training solutions to meet specific organisational needs and is fully accredited by SSETA for NVC Level 4, NVC Level 2, Generic Management Level 5 and Generic Management Level 4. Lungelo Hlabisa founded Amalungelo Training Group in 2014 after 14 years in the training industry.
“I come from a working class family where everyone believes that in order to achieve one’s goal, you need to be employed so I followed the same path. Throughout the many years of my career, working in various organisations and taking up key roles in the training industry, I developed a desire to start my own venture, Amalungelo Training Group with hopes of achieving financial freedom and fulfilling my ambitions” explains Lungelo.
Seeking an opportunity to grow in their overall business management skills and financial acumen, Amalungelo Training Group decided to join the Black Umbrellas (BU) programme in April 2018 with a turnover of R 420 000 per annum and a single staff member. Since then, the company has seen significant growth in their annual turnover to a staggering R 1.5m with a staff compliment of five dedicated men and women.
“Joining BU was a blessing in disguise, it meant swallowing ones pride and basically being on the other receiving end. This is simply because I had to undergo training similar to the ones I would facilitate to clients. I had to swiftly adapt and work much harder, spending around 11 hours at the office on a daily basis including 3 hours on weekends” remarks Lungelo.
Previously Amalungelo Training Group’s main focus was on soft skills training however with the alarming high rate of youth unemployment including skills shortage in technical skills especially amongst black communities (Rural & Townships), the company has since expanded into the Energy & Water SETA (EWSETA), Construction SETA (CETA) and Chemical Industries SETA (CHIETA).
When asked about Amalungelo Training Group’s short term goal, Lungelo explained “our goal is to establish a Skills Development Hub to capacitate our people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds as well as penetrate big corporates to develop their semi-skills staff by introducing learnerships and staff development programmes”.
Black Umbrellas’ Richard’s Bay incubator is proud of having Amalungelo Training Group as a client.  The growth prospects for SME clients such as Amalungelo Training Group continues to inspire our resolve and give credence to the incredible work that our teams are involved in.
