Week 10: Hope Gallery
(Links used for photos because Tumblr continuously deleted my post because of photos)
Lucas Foglia Human Nature
https://www.prixpictet.com/portfolios/hope-shortlist/lucas-foglia/
1.   Choose one series of photos and explain why and for whom you think these photos were taken.
I think these photos were taken to show people, especially those who live in wasteful first world areas, a different way of interacting with our planet. Each photo contains one or more person’s relationship with the nature around them. None of these are actions we typically see in our daily routines.
2.   What, overall, can you understand about life in this part of the world from this exhibit?
These photos are all taken in different parts of the world. Each photo tells us something different and specifically unique to the place they were taken. The first photo is taken in Virginia, USA and shows a woman bathing naked in mud. When I first saw this photo, Virginia is the last place I would have guessed it was taken since nudity, especially in this context, is not common in the United States, especially in a conservative state like Virginia. The photo below is taken in Singapore, and although I did not know where exactly this photo was taken, I knew it wasn’t in the United States because our cities do not mix concrete with greenery in this way. The middle four photos were the most presumptuous locations, except for the photo of the inmate in the garden. I assumed the photo capturing solid lava had to be near a Volcano and possibly Hawaii. The last photo, like the first, is an anomaly in American culture because of our taboos towards nudity. Even if the geographic location wasn’t somewhat identifiable, the actions occurring were unique.
3.   How do the information panels (the larger texts, and the labels beside the works) affect the way you read/understand the photos? To what extent can you understand what is going on in the images without the texts?
The information panel confirms that these photos were taken as a response to the damage done by humankind. While the text is informative, the message is easily understood just by looking at the photos. However, the panel also says that we have a need for wild places which I hadn’t thought about until reading the text. I saw these captures relationships as anomalies rather than an absolute.
4.   Is there anything in this exhibition that you find problematic or that you think is worth of praise, or both? What makes it so – style, subject matter, a combination of both, other?
I think it is problematic how I viewed the subject’s behavior as eye opening in regard to our environment and the all-consuming worry about climate change. I think these photos are worthy of praise because they capture alternative ways of living from the same people/areas we wouldn’t expect it from. It is also worth praise that the actions in each photo is interesting. For example: the inmate gardening
Ivor Prickett
https://www.prixpictet.com/portfolios/hope-shortlist/ivor-prickett/ip_end-of-the-caliphate_4-2/
a)    analyze closely how the subjects are depicted– what has the photographer chosen to include/ exclude from the photo? Look at camera angle/lighting/focus etc. How does this influence the way you understand the message of the photo?
Because the men holding the child are all wearing black shirts, there is more focus on the boy’s skin. The photographer has chosen to include the boys naked bottom as well as the skin to skin contact with the man holding him. This influences the way we understand this photo because it resembles how a parent holds their child. The photographer also includes the camouflage print apparel and the full war zone landscape behind the subjects. These factors give context to the situation occurring. Although this is clearly a military setting, no weapons are visible in this photo, but we can assume they must have been present. The photographer most likely excluded these because this photo is presenting a rescue and feels safe.
b)   what is the relationship between the photographer and the subject(s) in these photos?
The photographer is documenting the aftermath of a brutal war. He does not appear to be completely removed from the situation or it’s emotional fallout. The photographer searched for his own emotional healing in the return of hope and happiness in his subjects.
Margaret Courtney-Clarke
https://www.prixpictet.com/portfolios/hope-shortlist/margaret-courtney-clarke/margaret-courtney-clarke-cry-sadness-1-2/
a)    analyze closely how the subjects are depicted– what has the photographer chosen to include/ exclude from the photo? Look at camera angle/lighting/focus etc. How does this influence the way you understand the message of the photo?
The photographer excludes any clear indication of tourist buses in the area. This influences the way I look at this photo because I didn’t assume these two women are preforming a job. I thought this photo captured a genuine moment of cheerful dancing between friends. This made me think that bad situations don’t automatically mean unhappiness. However, knowing that these women are flagging down tourists lessens the sincerity of their actions.
b)   what is the relationship between the photographer and the subject(s) in these photos?
The photographer is, in fact, one of the tourists these women are trying to flag down. The photographer finds beauty in their culture and their ways, but she is not a part of it. In the panel the photographer states that she keeps coming back to visit.
Shahidul Alam
https://www.prixpictet.com/portfolios/hope-shortlist/shahidul-alam/sa_5_mothers-pride-2/
a)    analyze closely how the subjects are depicted– what has the photographer chosen to include/ exclude from the photo? Look at camera angle/lighting/focus etc. How does this influence the way you understand the message of the photo?
The photographer chooses to include and focus on the children’s writing. This is because their writing shows their education which I view as a very positive thing. One of the side effects of poverty is usually poor education. The photographer also includes a screen behind the woman. I assume this is included so we can observe the luxury this school has by possessing technology.
b)   what is the relationship between the photographer and the subject(s) in these photos?
The photographer and this woman, Hajera, are long friends. The photographer has watched her friend grow from terrible tragedy into a strong and resilient woman who gives to others. This photo shows the respect the photographer has for her friend by capturing her intelligence and selflessness.
Winner
Lucas Foglia Human Nature because I feel that this series is a beautiful representation of how Humans could interact with the earth we have been taking for granted.

The Singapore Airshow Holds Firm
The 2010 Singapore Airshow has been described by some commentators as "hot, but no sizzle." With the aerospace industry in recovery mode and airlines wrestling with capacity and demand issues it is not surprising that orders were few and far between. This time around the show was marginally smaller than two years ago but it still had plenty of activity and anticipation of new or future business. Overall the show can best be described as in a "holding pattern" with hope that when growth returns the 2012 event will once again provide a positive boost to the aerospace industry.
Tumblr media
In terms of exhibitors there were 800+ exhibitors from 40 countries, visitor numbers have been estimated at 50,000 visitors with 1,200 registered press and media. The mix of exhibitors tended to reflect the perception of the region with a high proportion of Military and Defence companies, Commercial Aviation Companies, Engine Manufacturers, Suppliers and related companies. In addition there was a smaller proportion of Business and Corporate Aviation Manufacturers and operators. Some notable big absentees included BAE Systems and SAAB Aero who did not exhibit on this occasion, both having had large booths/ pavilions in 2008. Time will tell if this was a prudent move or not, to take such drastic action in South East Asia can mean that it could take a very long time to re-establish good relations and secure future orders.
Since the Singaporeans parted company with Reed Exhibitions in 2006 Aviation Week seized the opportunity to become the "Official" media partner for the Singapore Airshow and publish the Official Show Daily. For the 2010 show Air Transport World and Aviation International News (AIN) are listed as "supporting" publications with AIN also publishing a Show Daily. Without a Show Daily from Flight International (owned by Reed) it meant that Aviation Week and AIN had a major opportunity to secure the "Lions share" of any advertising. International Aerospace also produced a Show Daily and Asian Defence Journal published a "one off" show "Focus". Aviation Week and AIN were far and away the main "print" choices for any advertiser wishing to target visitors to the show. It should be noted that Flight International did produce a digital copy of Flight Daily News together with a number of online updates, Twitter and iphone applications to deliver news from the show.
In terms of advertising the 2010 Singapore Airshow followed the current trend of a reduction in levels of advertising and publicity. The level of advertising compared to the 2008 Singapore Airshow appeared to be reduced especially in the Show Dailies. The trend was for a 7% reduction in advertising levels although when rate increases are factored in the reality is that the levels of advertising either remained stable or were marginally reduced.
The level of "on-site" official advertising and sponsorship appeared to hold up well with many sponsors and billboards placed around the show. Compared with the 2008 Singapore Airshow there was a major reshuffle of locations (on the part of the advertisers) indicating that some billboard advertisers re-evaluated their locations after the first show at the new exhibition site. Closer examination of the advertisers indicated that a considerable proportion of the billboards may have been on a "contra" basis, particularly those billboards from publications. Many advertisers from previous shows renewed their advertising for the 2010 show while new billboard and panel advertisers such as Israel Aircraft Industries, Aviall, Certis CISCO, Goodrich, ITT, SDV and Rolls Royce added to the level of on-site advertising.

Stainless Steel Signs Manufacturer
Tumblr media
Stainless Steel Signs are notice boards which are erected or installed at a desired place or location, and their single function is to pass on any relevant information. Stainless steel is used in the manufacture of these types of sign because they are extremely rustproof and have an exceptionally long functional life. Stainless steel signs may be powder coated, painted, brushed and etched, and is particularly more pleasing to the eye when the latter two finishes are applied.
Lettering is another way of achieving a successful sign, and fixing letters to backgrounds can be done in a variety of ways. Originally writing or text was chiselled into marble stone or wood to create a contrast but now this is achieved by letters made from materials such as stainless steel, aluminium, bronze or resin.
The typefaces and finishes which are achievable are almost limitless, and any potential for reproduction is well within the capabilities using modern sign making techniques. Custom made or bespoke signage is completely unique, and signs created of this nature can end up looking like absolutely anything the customer requires. Bespoke signs are ideally suited to retail outlets and one off projects, or for someone who likes to stand out from the crowd and show some individuality.
The signs may be fixed so as to appear as if they are hanging on nothing, or invisible fixing. Or the fixings can be made a feature of with decorative cover screw heads of stainless or chrome bolt heads for instance. There are many different types of signs in everyday use and some of these can include A boards & display cases, Digital printing, Post & panel signs, Hoardings, Door signs and nameplates, Safety signs and Exhibition graphics. Other types of sign include suspended signs.
These types of sign are held by rods through the ceiling and are fixed to a solid bulkhead. Materials can be brushed or blasted stainless steel, aluminium, glass or even a mixture of all three. Freestanding signs can be erected and installed just about any where there is enough room for them to stand, and when they are not needed or needed somewhere else they can be very simply relocated.

Benefits Of Stage Backdrop Printing For Your Corporate Events
The use of event backdrop is becoming a more and more popular way to make corporate events in Singapore stand out. A strategically and creatively designed backdrop can be a great way to promote your brand and increase ROI.
Why Should You Invest in Backdrop Printing For Exhibition Singapore?
The backdrop for stages or events is one of the most important elements of any live event. It sets the tone for the entire event and it is what audiences will remember. A stage backdrop is basically a large printed canvas that hangs from the ceiling and covers a stage’s back wall. It can be used to set a mood, create an atmosphere, or highlight certain aspects of performance.
The cost of backdrop printing can vary depending on what type of material you want your backdrop to be printed on, how large it needs to be, and how many colors are included in the design. Also, it can somewhere depend on the size of the stage you’re setting up for your exhibition singapore.
The benefits of stage backdropprinting are clear. The backdrops are made out of durable materials, so they can withstand being set up and taken down repeatedly. This is perfect for schools, churches, and other organizations that need to make use of their stage space frequently.
Backdrops for exhibition singapore can be used for a variety of purposes. For example, it can be used to promote a band’s upcoming concert or to provide decoration for a school’s play production. Backdrop printing is also great for corporate events because it provides the perfect atmosphere while also being cost-effective and easy to assemble.
Differences Between Exhibition Panel Printing Vs. Exhibition Panel Rental
Tumblr media
There are a few key cost differences to take into account when deciding between printing backdrops for your exhibition singapore or renting it from a third-party company. Remember, printed panels are generally more expensive than rented panels. Also, if you opt to print your panels, you will need to factor in the cost of renting a printer and the time it takes to print the panels.
On the other hand, if you choose to get Stage Backdrop on rental, you can enjoy a more stress-free and easy-going event setup experience. The rental company will come and set up the stage background for you. However, there will be delivery and set-up fees associated with the rental service.

HPL is the direct descendent of the original plastic laminate. It is one of the most durable decorative surface materials and is available with superior performance properties including fire and wear resistance. Medium-density fibreboard (MDF) or particleboard is the preferred substrate as they provide a durable, stable, consistent, and economic foundation. HPL is the preferred choice for horizontal surfaces including countertops, flooring, and desktops, owing to their superior durability.
The adoption of HPL in furniture and cabinets is increasing on account of an upsurge in the use of ready-to-assemble furniture and cabinets. Moreover, HPL is highly robust and versatile; and offers an aesthetic look for both horizontal and vertical applications in residential and office furniture. HPL is highly resistant to external stress such as crack, heat, abrasion, and moisture, which further help in the effective manufacturing of furniture and cabinets.
HPL finds widespread applications in the residential sector. It is one of the safest and hygienic materials used in the architecture, construction, and designing of home interiors. Moreover, it offers anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties, which help to ensure that the furniture manufactured using HPL in the kitchen such as tabletops, vanities, countertops, and flooring are microbe-free.
However, the only bottleneck in the growth trajectory of the global decorative high-pressure laminates market is the fluctuating raw material prices. Nevertheless, enhancement in the printing techniques with advanced graphics and manufacturing of eco-friendly laminates are expected to offer lucrative opportunities to the market players operating in the global market.
