2024 Cdrama Year in Review

Overall Favorite Show:

Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

Funny, charming, sweet, warmhearted, tender, touching, clever, and just all around a delight. Was it perfect? No. Did it make me happier and give me more brain worms (of the good kind, not the RFK kind) than any other drama this year? Yes.

Favorite Character:

Mu Sheng/Ziqi from Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

This man is crack to me. Put a bunch of tropes Haro loves in a pot and stir them up, then add Ding Yuxi's sad baby boy yes and you get Ziqi aka 'this character was made for me.'

Runner up would be Miaomiao:

Zhao Yuanzhou from Fangs of Fortune

Zhao Yuanzhou my beautiful tragic demon boy who deserves the world. The epitome of ‘Do you understand the violence it took to become this gentle?’

Favorite Ship:

Miaomiao and Ziqi from Love Game in Eastern Fantasy

Such a tender, quiet love that develops from a strong friendship into something more. I love that they never stop being cute, teasing BFFs once they hook up. The story that ties it all together in the last episode is so beautiful. I'm content knowing that even though they might not have cool powers any longer, they are going to live happily ever after. Everything that happened to them was real. 💖

favorite ship runner up:

Zhuo Yichen/Zhao Yuanzhou from Fangs of Fortune

In a word, gorgeous. The way pure hatred can transform into uncompromising love, two people who couldn't seem more different on the surface can find a singular understanding, and the way that love is sacrifice, but it's also taking on a burden for someone who has spent his whole life doing so for others (choosing someone who has never been chosen, and when the time comes, his soul sings and comes back to you).

Other runner up would be Xiaoyao/Tushan Jing from Lost You Forever, but they were on last year's list for the first season so.

A'Nian from Lost You Forever S2

This princess has some of the strongest character growth in the series, and definitely the best arc in season two. Just delightful to watch. Strong subversion of the evil SFL trope.

Nitian Erxing from Burning Flames

In a generally kind of overstuffed and simplistic cast, this devoted demon king stood out to me. Not just his cunty styling, but his nobility and surprising level of complexity.

If you bring in 2023 dramas that I watched in 2024, add in Wang Ye from I am Nobody to the above. He's such a mood, and he's very pretty. He was by far my favorite part of season one. Can't wait to see him again. .💖

favorite antagonist:

Princess Wanning from The Double

Not sure about favorite because I wasn't that invested in her specifically, but as far as 'best' antagonist, it was probably her. Legend says that Li Meng is still chewing the scenery to this day.

A lot of the stuff I've worked on for my Prince/Bodyguard AU is too spoilery recently, but here's a quiet moment before the storm:

Now A’Fei pulls the xiaoguan out of its box and turns it back and forth in the light. Perhaps the height of his palm in the front, the fine gold filigree shines and glitters, and the two dragons on either side almost look alive – caught in a roar as if to defend their wearer. In the center sits a thumb-sized oval of red jade polished smooth, and two more small pieces above and below it. Xiangyi pulls it from his hand and gets it settled into place around the bun, then uses the matching gold and red jade hairpin to secure it in place. “Xiangyi,” A’Fei murmurs as he smooths out the tails of the ribbon. “What are you doing?” This time there’s no amusement in his voice – only confusion. The prince has to swallow a few times before he can answer. “I’m staking my claim,” he says, trying to inject his usual arrogance into the words. “I know you said that you don’t even belong to yourself – and I don’t understand how that can be true… But you do belong to me.” Their eyes meet in the bronze mirror. “You’re mine. …If you want,” he finishes as he looks away, lowering his gaze to the floor, and stepping back. Di Feisheng turns on the stool and grabs one of his hands to pull him back. He waits in silence until Xiangyi finally lifts his head and their eyes meet once again. “Thank you,” he says softly, emphatically. “But you didn’t have to.” “I wanted to,” the prince answers just as softly. Di Feisheng huffs, the corner of his mouth ticking up.

I think rhubarb is underrated, at least in the US.

I did formally study (Mandarin) Chinese, but it was in the dark ages when you couldn't just go find Chinese media online (maybe you could find Faye Wong lyrics if you were lucky) and I was never very good. Plus I didn't maintain even what I had, and now...I suck. But hey, maybe I'll get better! I also speak, like, 5 words of Taiwanese 🫠

Three places I've lived for more than a month but less than a year are Wichita, KS; Oakland, CA; and Taipei.

I (can) play the viola - my favourite context in which to do so is in an orchestra or string ensemble! I like the feeling of contributing to & matching a group, moreso than solo playing. it's something that I don't get many opportunities to do nowadays, but I always enjoy it.

I read voraciously the Anne McCaffery series Dragonriders of Pern as a kid. as a result, dragons of that flavour will always be the superior type of dragon in my head.

my best & native language is english, followed by (mandarin) chinese which I learnt in school since I was young, but barely speak at home & so is pretty basic and conversational. then japanese which I learnt for a few years in high school, and korean which I self-studied and mostly picked up through songs.

WIP Wednesday (Dihua Anniversary Edition)

I thought I'd change things up a bit for this week's WIP Wednesday, so instead of sharing something from my Mysterious Lotus Casebook longfic, I'm sharing an excerpt from the very opening of my new dihua anniversary fic, which is a collaboration with @greentealycheejelly (her art is INCREDIBLE! Check it out if you haven't already!), and is a sequel to "Waning Marks and Dawning Realizations" which I wrote for @exitvelocities for the Dihua Exchange last year.

Li Lianhua sank back into the bed, sated and panting for breath, a-Fei’s shouted “Xiangyi!” still echoing in his ears, and let a-Fei’s comforting weight press him deeper into the mattress. He smiled as he shifted his legs so they wrapped around a-Fei’s hips instead of his shoulders, relishing the pull in his pleasantly sore muscles, and draped an arm across a-Fei’s shoulder blades. He hadn’t expected entreating “Let me hear you” at the critical moment to make such a difference, but the evidence was right before him. Or, more accurately, sprawled on top of him, and growing heavier by the second as a-Fei let more tension seep from his muscles, his face buried in the juncture of Li Lianhua’s neck and his shoulder. 

Li Lianhua stroked his thumb along the exit wound skirting a-Fei's spine that Shaoshi had left twelve years before. A mere three months ago, lying like this, with even half that amount of pressure on his lungs, would have triggered a coughing fit that would have only resolved after he’d spat up copious amounts of blood. And even after a-Fei had healed him, a-Fei had still been cautious–lying beside him, behind him, very occasionally beneath him–but never like this.

Not until now.

He wrapped his arm more tightly around a-Fei and pulled him closer, gratified by a-Fei’s almost inaudible but yet still gloriously present sigh that drained away yet more tension from his muscles. Rarely did a-Fei let himself relax like this, let himself melt into bonelessness, rarer still that he would linger in bed after their coupling, linger inside him, even, letting their breathing slow together, letting time itself slow, until the world narrowed to just the two of them, intertwined.

Was a-Fei truly starting to trust in their good fortune? Or had the months, the years of constant caretaking coupled with too little sleep finally taken their toll, and his nightlong cooking adventure and their morning exertions had been the last push that worn him down?

@exitvelocities @missisjoker it looks like you're correct regarding this mark being half of the Baize Seal and I have to eat those words and enjoy them! I was entirely convinced that the mark from the baize token half on Zhao Yuanzhou was also circular, like the mark on wen xiao's forehead, but like, masked by the shape of the muscle it's on (if you look at only the first screenshot you can see what I mean) But a close-up of the reveal it did confirm it! I thought it was the black possession leaf mark from Li Lun (here on Miss Qi, best screenshot I could swing spontaneously)

colored in the gold of the baize token as colored in as the gold of the baize token to show both influences warring over/in him or something. (because why should only one half be a visible half, while the other is circular? And why make them so similar to the leaf?) So now I have gripes with design choices instead of a literal plot hole, apparently! While we're at it: Can someone whose mandarin is better than my nonexistent one clear up if Li Lun actually took credit for killing Zhao Wan'er when he apparently had jack shit to do with it? Was that a poor translation of what he said?

Fangs of Fortune Frustration

So, in Ep 3, Li Lun talks to himself (but addresses Zhao Yuanzhou), asking which of his new friends he should kill first - at about the 30 minute mark. (29:51 on iqiyi specifically) The subtitles here state "Which one of them should I kill first? As usual, I will start with the Baize Goddess" Stating that *he* was the one who killed the last Baize Goddess, unless something got seriously flubbed in the subtitles. (Given the subtitles consistently misgender Bai Jiu's mom and there a few other errors noticeable even to me, I am not excluding that possibility.) And then, In the flashback of Zhao Wan'er's death that Li Lun hands Wen Xiao in Ep 16, we see Li Lun drop a leaf after being sealed

Zhao Yuanzhou pick up the leaf Li Lun left after we had the whole thing about him using his leaves for possession, right before the blood moon rises

And then, after he went on his murder rampage supposedly being controlled by Malicious Energy Energy, we see him have this mark behind his ear, which is usually the mark of a possession by Li Lun, and regain consciousness after it fades.

So this strongly implies that Li Lun was at the very least hitching a ride for Zhao Yuanzhou's whole murder rampage. And if we compare this incident with the time Zhao Yuanzhou is controlled by malicious energy in the present, where the only one he attacks with intense force and fatally is the enemy of him and his friends, while even Zhuo Yichen at best gets played with, not injured, (even though Zhao Yuanzhou is clearly terrified of doing more damage on some level? That makes it look like Li Lun was at least in part, if now wholly, responsible for Zhao Yuanzhou killing Zhao Wan'er and several members Demon Hunting Bureau. Wen Xiao, after this, still claims he was controlled by Malicious energy and is not suspicious of Li Lun having been able to share things he, if he wasn't possessing Zhao Yuanzhou, shouldn't have been there for (like the stuff in the demon hunting bureau) – but she is prone to visions, so I thought she was going to misattribute it to that until she realizes that wait, Li Lun was actually along for the ride, and may be more responsible for those deaths than Zhao Yuanzhou. A foreshadowed reveal that is then reinforced by flashbacks to where the hints were already dropped ahead of time, ad the show commonly does. But having finished the show, as far as the characters and plot are concerned, this apparently never happened? If this was from an earlier plotline and before they decided to change Li Lun's arc to the more complex one we ultimately saw, why didn't they at least edit out this shot with the explicit Leaf of Possession? Everything else with Zhao Yuanzhou picking up the leaf could just have been sentimentality after all!

I was searching upon Art therapist around Greater Manchester and stumbled across this website, an therpaist named Julie Barton. Her experience includes working in schools and with local authorities providing a service to children/young people affected by domestic violence, abuse, trauma, bereavement and a range of emotional, psychological, behavioural, or mental health issues. Julie also has many years experience working within statutory, voluntary and charitable service providers, both with adults and young people. My knowledge and experience covers the spectrum of learning disabilities, including profound, complex and additional support needs, behaviours that challenge, mental health issues and forensic. Which really intrigued me to find out more or how she began this career path and learnt so much on how to help people just by being passionate about her art. Therefore, i decided to message her sugesting we talk about the nature of her role and how she finds it as a career choice, as i would like opinons on how people feel within the job they have worked so hard for. Why did she want to be a therapist along art within her practice. I also want to see if there is any voluntary work available after Covid 19 has gone. As no placements are allowed in this pandemic, which is really frustrating as it sets me back from working and learning to see what it is like for myself. But i will make sure i get the opportunity when it is all over.
