theres this pervasive idea that bc this is to some degree incongruous with the batman that those fans like and grew up with from the animated stuff or whatever that means that it is the true bruce and everything else is wrong and can be dismissed or retconned or fix it ficced. but much like irl instances where someone is important and holds power none of the widespread perception means a damn thing in the face of the ways they mistreat someone. it is actually really common for an abuser or shitbag to get away with it even if people around them know what has gone on they convince themself to keep their head down. so like the way bruce treats jason across many different writers is reflective of his character as a whole at this point, argue with a wall. and if dc realized they were doing this to such an extent there are a lot of interesting directions to explore to allow characters to grow and do better or even to make them even more fucked up but imo dc is to boring and cowardly to do an in depth dissection of bruce and jasons ever festering dynamic.
Pretty much every single interaction Bruce has with Jason is “ooc” bro what does an in-character version of their dynamic even look like.
The way I see it Jason’s whole character exists to acknowledge and critique the aspects of Batman’s mythos which -to the tumblr fandom at least- you’re supposed to ignore. He gets used as a figurehead for meta criticism of Batman for a reason.

look, I’m not usamerican, and maybe I don’t get all the intricasies, but suring the summer 2020 protest movement, I know the Breonna Taylor case was one of the more animating cases of the movemt, and now the prosecutor’s office exonorated her killers and pinned the blame on her boyfriend, and the response has been pretty much non-existant. now maybe I am out if line, but I can only speculate, that if that verdict was handed down and Trump was the president, Liberals would be in the streets, in Louisville, and other cities, forming a critical mass in the streets, brands would be posting public statements about racial justice and liberal celebrities would be posting links to bail funds for arrested protestors all over social media. but it’s Biden in the white house, and former prosecutor Harris as the nominee, it’s crickets.

Paradoxically, people who get angry at the "Was Brandon stupid?" (by going to where the Mad King was and Rhaegar and Lyanna had no reason to be, "conveniently" straight to his expected death in those circumstances) would be validated in such criticism being misplaced against him in the case that Brandon genuinely believed so with good reason by being lied to in such specific terms about whatever information came to him from the spot of Lyanna's disappearance.
The paradox comes from such crowd's wish to exonorate and pity Brandon, but not Lyanna, hence sticking in that dead end. Quite the contrary, the whole purpose of the outrage is solely to incriminate Lyanna - and of course Rhaegar.

If Quaritch had managed to get out of prison legally after 9 years, would they have given him custody immediately or would there have been any supervised visits etc.? How would Spider react if he found out that his father was in facr innocent and now he was going to live with him? Would Recoms still met Spider then? And where would Quaricth and Spider live?
It would depend on the law and although I don’t know what that is without doing research, I’d imagine the child’s needs and wishes would be high priority here. And at 16 if Spider wanted to live with his foster parents and not move in with his stepdad he hasn’t seen in 9 years, I find it hard to imagine they’d just make him move. I’m also not sure if Q would have a lot of rights here as he’s not a birth parent and he’s not (recently) been raising Spider. I think a lot would depend on the goodwill of the foster parents. But in a world where they’re decent people and Q is exonorated, you’d like to think they’d give him access to Spider and encourage Spider to get to know him.
If Q was proven innocent via legal means it would have horrified Spider in the sense that he’d never given him a chance. He’d absolutely want to see Q, though I think he’d be afraid of Q being disappointed in him. The happy memories would come flooding back for sure.
If it was Spider’s wish and all cleared with the foster parents and the system, then Q would probably want to move away and have a fresh start with Spider. (If Spider wanted to live with him but attend the same school then Q would of course prioritise Spider’s wishes). He would meet Wainfleet for sure but it could be months or even a year or so before he met some of the other recoms. They’d probably all be in communication with Q to congratulate him etc but there would be no stampede to visit, they’d just drop in when Q was cool with it and it was convenient for everyone. So Spider would know them as individuals rather than a group, and likely he’d only see them for a meal or something and then they’d be away again, so he might only know one or two by name. <3

I still hate that Late Night with the Devil used AI art for its in-universe bumpers, which is a slap in the face to the actual artists who worked on the film as well as being inauthentic to it being a 1977 period piece. Any discussion of this film needs to be prefaced with that. But I'm not not enjoying it outside of that fly in the ointment. You know, it's not exactly Cradle of Fear showing actual snuff footage and disfigured corpses for gratuitous shock value.
It's a documentary of an in-universe variety talk show called Night Owls with Jack Delroy, hosted by one Jack Delroy, leading into the recently-uncovered master tape footage of the lost final episode. A Halloween special where Jack's guests for the night include a former stage magician who is willing to pay an exorbitant sum for irrefutable proof of the supernatural, a spiritual medium, and the survivor of a satanic cult along with the parapsychologist acting as her guardian. As you would expect, things go off the rails.
Gus' thing with the worms was handwaved as Carmichael hypnotizing "even the viewers at home", but I find it hard to believe the final scene's sequence was supposed to be real footage. Especially since it's a different aspect ratio and resolution. In fact, they seem to have completely forgotten about the framing device by the final act.
If Minnie was an intimate, private nickname Jack had for Madeline, why is she almost exclusively referred to by it?
It's implied that Jack was arrested for murder after the ending, but when you think about it, there was a studio audience of witnesses to the demonic possession as well as it happening on live television. If nothing else, the footage that's now being used in a documentary would exonorate him. I mean, what did the climax look like outside of Jack's fever dream, that he stabbed a child to death? The same child with a supernova bursting from her head who killed three people with her demonic powers? Which definitely for-real happened since the victims' bodies were still on the floor in the aftermath? If anything, Jack looks like a hero for slaying a demon that laid waste to his studio. I mean, the point of all this was ostensibly because witnessing a sacrifice to Abraxas will enthrall you to do its bidding, so doing it on live TV would subjugate many thousands of people at once. But like, exactly how loose are the rules here? That wasn't exactly a formal ritual and it wasn't exactly being done in worship of Abraxas.

i don't even really know what musical theater crime ben platt ever committed but i have to admit i was swept up in the casual dislike of him HOWEVER i saw theater camp the other day and now he is fully exonorated in my eyes. and i know he was involved in the production of the movie and the role was probably at least somewhat tailored to him but i still think it was an inspired casting choice. as i'm already talking about this i also have to admit i think he's Good in pitch perfect. ignore all this if it was a real crime he committed but i don't think so? i think people just acted like it was? anyway watch theater camp it's not perfect but it is really really funny

My Revenge of the Sith rewrite:
Anakin's reason for distrusting the Jedi is Ahsoka's trial, not being asked to spy on Palpatine. Anakin "Authoritarianism might be good" Skywalker would definitely be a "If you've done nothing wrong you've got nothing to hide" person who sees this as a chance to exonorate Palpatine
Anakin doesn't know Palpatine is Sith until after he's attacked by the Jedi, meaning he actually has a reason to think the Jedi are trying to claim power. Finding out Palpatine is Sith would still shock him, but he'd doubt what he knows about the Sith given that the Jedi attacked him instead of the other way around.
Anakin doesn't kill the younglings. This one is actually really important because I think even Luke seeing the good in Vader falls flat when you're talking about the guy who murdered children at the drop of a hat. This would show that while Anakin is sliding towards the dark side he still has some humanity left.
Instead of telling Obi-wan to go after Anakin, Yoda tries to take that responsibility because he thinks Obi-wan won't be able to put aside his feelings -- Obi-wan ends up going anyways because he thinks that there's enough humanity left in Anakin that he could still save him
Instead of Padme dying just because she's sad(???), Palpatine is in some way responsible because he knows that losing Padme will totally untether Vader from his humanity, resulting in the ruthless sith lord we see in the later movies.

Any case looks like a wash if you choose to pick the dumbest angle some dumb journalist picks to fill space. the key evidence alongisde the gun and the manifesto is a fake ID that was used to check in at a hostel on the day of the shooting.
The whole idea that he’s a Patsy has one major hiccup: his family background. estranged as he might be from them, he is from a rich, politically commected family, who would spring for his defence if not to exonorate, then at least protect their own name and image. They took him alive, so he’ll get to enter a statement, and again, will most likely get a lawyer paid by his family.
Now, is it possible he was not the shooter, and he had some other reason to visit NYC incognito and allegedly with a gun, sure. everything is alleged until a verdict, but this arbitrary scepticism, and conspirational thinking is totally spirious to me. if they wanted to just pin the crime on someone it would be a dead body. if they wanted a live patsy it would be someone who wouldn’t have the compotency or resources to defend himself. the circunstantial evidence the police are presenting is him checkking into a hostel near the shooting with a fake ID with his photo on it, that he had on him when arrested, not that he played Among Us.
i still give it above even odds that the guy they caught is just a scapegoat because the NYPD didnt want to drag the manhunt over the holidays, or worse (for their image), call it quits

Navalny's funeral. Thousands (?) in attendance. Navalny's parents there. Navalny's wife and children safely out of the country. He was everything Putin is not. The crowd breaks into an anti-Putin chant. There is a recording of his favorite music. "My Way"...sung by Frank Sinatra.
In Atlanta, more of the Fani Willis nonsense. The judge says he will come up with a decision in two weeks. The case, hanging in the balance, could easily be dissolved. All of the Trump criminals, ahem, exonorated.

Rain. Lots of it. Head out. Get gloriously wet.
The feeling that we are drifting, sleepwalking, into the end of our democracy. Trump ahead in the polls. The people (but do they vote or just complain? they love showing up at rallies...it's the best show in town) want a "strongman," a dictator. Some women have remarked that there's something "sexy" about a dictator.
Sunday, March 3, 2024
Beautiful springlike day. I touch base with Kenichi, the busiest guy in town. (He has a birthday coming up but will be working that day.) He says that he thinks he'll be free (for a little while) on Wednesday to look at my phone. (I am well overdue for a newer one.)
Errands. Run into a few neighbors (in the building).
Monday, March 4, 2024
On the news: Supreme Court unanimously rules to keep Trump on the Colorado ballot. No surprise, this. Trump does a victory lap. Says this is a great day for democracy (or words to that effect). This was an a easy one. A layup. The next one is slightly more difficult...is Trump an insurrectionist or is he to be granted (presidential) immunity. They'll wait a bit before deciding this one. (The party line: it wasn't an insurrection, it was a riot. Even as I write these words the event is fading in national memory.)
Nice weather again. Must get out. Must get in those steps.
to be continued

What if the authorities responsible for locking up Quaritch were afraid that Spider would remember what really happened, so they would tighten the witness protection program to change his identity (name and surname) and transfer him to another country, to some adoptive family, to remove him from the case as far as possible ? They would also prevent any contact between them, including a prison meeting. What if Spider lived a new life, completely unaware of his stepfather's escape, until he found him (I have no idea how he did it, maybe some hacking into the system?) If Spider was used to the new name, would Quaritch force him to use the old one? What would Spider's reaction be if Q and his team suddenly showed up at his door after all these years? And what would Q do with his son's foster family, would he treat them as kidnappers or ignore them? Where would they even stay, in Spider's current country of residence or would they take him back to look for Paz's killer?
I think I wrote too much, sorry for the unnecessary gibberish
Those are good questions!
If (for example) Spider had actually witnessed the murder or had additional info that would help Q solve the case and exonorate himself then this could be a valid concern for the authorities. I think the easiest thing to do would be to keep the security super tight on Q (which they did do at first in Custody) but I could see a world where witness protection could be a thing.
I don't know what the policy would be in the USA in terms of witness protection in other lands, and I don't know that this case would warrant that level of protection (though again, Q himself had access to a lot of important info, so if it was more of a hostage situation - ie Spider is in 'witness protection' but is essentially the government's hostage to Q's good behaviour/not revealing their secrets, then I could see it!). But if it was going to be abroad, I would assume Canada is the most likely place Spider would get moved to.
Obviously age is a factor here - if Quaritch breaks out and finds Spider almost immediately at age 7 that's different from him doing it when Spider is 16 or a grown man. But I'm guessing to align it with Custody, you're picturing Spider at 16, esp if he is living with an adoptive family still.
In terms of Quaritch's response to the adoptive family - if Spider was in a healthy and happy condition there would be a level of respect and gratitude there. There would also be a heap of jealousy that they got to raise him. But it might be that they were not connected to the case itself and were not given all the info - and I think Q could believe that they just thought they were helping the child of a murderer. If of course it was more of a Jake Sully vibe - someone who is connected to the case- that would be different. On the whole he probably wouldn't have an issue with them, but he'd expect them to give Spider up to him and he'd be okay with a certain degree of force to make sure that happened.
In terms of Spider's reaction - I think it would be all the more shocking for him than the way things happened in Custody because the jail visit gave him a heads-up of sorts (not that he thought Q would break out, but he was at least thinking of him recently). And then even after the jail break, Spider did have a teeny breather because he wasn't kidnapped straight away. Whereas here, Q is just showing up at his door out of the blue. Presumably Spider would think he's a killer? (Depends on the premise!) In which case he'd initially assume Q was going to kill him and maybe also his family. And if he worked out Q wasn't going to kill him then he'd still be afraid for his family and it might be a route for Q to get him to surrender to him.
In terms of what Q would do after this, I think he'd absolutely want to look for Paz's killer if it was feasible. If not, he'd smuggle them both off somewhere remote, USA or otherwise. He'd definitely want to use 'Miles' and wouldn't be happy if Spider rejected his name. But I don't think he'd be against Spider's new name if Spider also wanted to use that, he'd just treat it as a nickname, despite it being the legal name. (The main reason Q doesn't use 'Spider' in Custody although he is aware of it, he thinks it sounds super dumb lol. Miles is also still his legal name and Spider does use Miles in school etc, so it's not that weird for him).
Did I cover everything? I hope I did! <3
