EXPERIMENTAL EDITS

In this workshop we experimented with different techniques, including- typeography, brush tool, shape, distorted text, distorted sections, hand written type and creative backgrounds. We were experimenting with all these techniques to prepare ourselves for creating pages for our magazine. My favourite were the ones I copied into this post as they are simple but look interesting. My favourite for a editorial style is the blue back drop with the type as I think its looks good central with two ore images either side- makes it less boring that just having one image. I also like how they’re all bright and have a happy mood to them- this links in with the theme utopia.

EXPERIMENTAL TYPEOGRAPHY

For my publication I did a lot of research with current publications such as Dazed and I-D as well as other publications at ‘Colours may vary’. From this research I decided I wanted my publication to be a magazine. 

Writing and editorial work is my strong point so I wanted to embrace what I love doing as much as possible. I wanted each page to be different with a lot of experimentation with typeography, image design and layouts. 

My publication includes 2 of my shoots with my models, pictures I have taken relating to my theme of underground music, as well as relevant quotes. As far as writing is concerned I wrote to main articles in the publication. One article is about ‘hype beast’ fashion which I had researched on blog and is related to underground music and fashion. The piece is short but informative, as well as witty, which suits the publication style and relates well to the target audience.

I have a great interest in politics so for my second article I wanted to write about the upcoming general election. I didn't want the piece to be out of place so I have related it to young people as well as references information and images of underground music artists and their take and opinions on politics.

On the contents page I included a small introduction to the publication which nicely summarises what VEXED is about, as well as what the audience is to expect in the publication.

At the end of the publication I added a page as a warning and safety issue to target audience readers. From my research there is a lot of stigma about underground raves especially and them being a hot bed for violence and drugs. Sometimes this can be the case so I felt it was important to not let the issue go unnoticed.

Overall I am very happy with my publication. Every page is something different and it makes you want to keep turning. If I were to make any changes I would probably make it really long and thick like publications such as Dazed, but my budget for printing wouldn’t allow this and there would be no reason for it to be 200 pages (I just like the feel of thick and collectable magazines).
