When you work as an artist it’s difficult to make time for hobby art. Then there are the days when you finally get the time to create just for hobby sake and it’s difficult to find the energy or the drive to make art at all. But it’s important to push through and create because it’s one of the things that makes us happy at our core. I work as an artist. I actually use the money I earn to pay bills and send my kids to college so it is important that I don’t lose focus or the will to create, but that means staying constantly inspired, creative and vigilant. Yes vigilant. Hyper aware of what is trending, how my work is being used outside of the classroom, and what I can do to keep my students feeling successful in what they learn. It’s hard. It’s every bit a real job. Tack on that you work from home, have a really big family and have all the usual chores and household to do items that every other mom has on her checklist. It’s hard to keep up, stay positive and turn a blind eye to the unkindnesses that can surface from time to time. But you know what? It’s also worth it. It’s worth seeing your students succeed, it’s worth reading how your art cheered someone on a day they needed it most, it’s worth it when something goes better than planned, and it’s worth it when you finally get a day to make art just for the sake of making art. If you know a working artist show them some extra love today! Many of them are also working to pay the bills. Many of them are moms, wives, caretakers, cooks, doers of laundry, lunch packers, homework checkers, babysitters and more. I love the unexpected magic that appears when working with watercolor. Most of my favorite discoveries happen when painting wet on wet. Experimenting with the three primary colors that I so carefully avoid every day. Pushing myself and learning things- like how I love the bright red watered down to a soft pink and how permanent yellow seems garish to me but I adore ochre and how cobalt blue is much prettier with deep shadow violet dropped in as an afterthought. Mixing primary colors makes me happy. Using them as simple red, yellow, blue- not so much. It seems like it would be simpler but for me it is not. Mixing color is my true love. Having this new @mijello_mission palette to play with is helping. The “bright red” is not only a new color for me but it leans slightly toward neon which is kinda fun! Always experimenting. My all time favorite botanical mask. I am loving the less than perfect print I can pull on my printing plate when using stencils and masks with alcohol ink. I am all about the less than perfect. Enjoying a break from art and thinking about how much needed it is once in awhile. It’s not that I don’t always love art and the act of making, it’s just that sometimes I need to recharge. The art world is a much different place than it used to be and it forces me to consider so many things now and moving forward. Breaks are good. They allow us to focus on our love of life outside of art, especially when art is your job. It’s a glorious thing to pause and examine what is most important in your life. My regular life is so full and chaotic, in the best kind of way. It’s exhausting and loud and frustrating sometimes, but it’s hands down where I find the most love and joy in my life. Finding a peaceful balance between the two is my ongoing goal. Also- further exploration of all the greens/blues is on my list when I’m back in the studio. How about you? Do you take art breaks ? Today when this jar of dried geranium blossoms spilled over I was suddenly taken by that deep crimson color. I wasn’t feeling creative but that one color inspired me to pick up my paintbrush. I love how color is such a powerful motivator. The simplest things can sometimes trigger the biggest changes in us. It’s true for life and it’s true for art. Changes in our art and creative processes don’t always come easily or quickly but when they do it can be both refreshing and relieving. As an artist that works as an artist it it can be an extremely overwhelming feeling- that need I feel to create day in and day out. It can even be a stressor for other parts of my life. I have learned that it’s so important to step away sometimes and know that it’s OK to recharge, reboot and do the things I love outside of art. For me, these pauses are almost always the catalyst for something bigger. Better even. I need art in my life for many reasons, the least of which is a job, but the truth is this- if I’m not good I won’t feel like making art. It’s cyclical. So I pause when I need to pause, I do things in my life that bring me joy-outside of art-and I reset my creative process as needed. And it’s not always a cycle I can pre-schedule. Life, my life-the good and the bad-dictate when these cycles fall into place. Accepting that they will happen, that they need to happen, has changed how I navigate those feelings of a working artist. For me, and maybe for you too, a simple pause is in order.
