i've been exhausted the last couple days - but i have some (rather elaborate) gel pen swatching in portrait form :D

i'll definitely be incorporating the pens in other portraits/drawings and maybe getting some colored pencils along with the pens to supplement my marker drawings! (i really want some acrylic markers...) now my traditional style looks more colorful and more like my digital style :p
anyway yah. some messy low energy drawings for fun :))

The me who buys a yarn specifically for a project and the me who is later swatching that yarn are two entirely separate people
#this yarn must have been labeled weirdly on the website#cause why did I buy something much more lace weight for a sweater that called for fingering?#I think I can make it work through the power of math but I wish I remembered what I was thinking#knitting#swatching

In an effort to figure out why my moss stitch* was coming out crooked, I knit a bunch of dishcloths using different techniques. I mostly varied knitting style (English, Norwegian, or Continental) and stitch mount (Western, Eastern, or Combination). With the last two dishcloths I also switched needles and then selvage.
These were all knit with Lily Sugar’n Cream (100% cotton dishcloth yarn plied with an S twist) in the colour Soleil, with a 29-stitch Latvian cast on and a Latvian bind off. All of them have been machine washed and tumble dried hot to encourage the yarn to exaggerate whatever it wants to do.
L to R:
Knitting style: Norwegian. Stitch mount: Western. Needles: 3.5mm Knitter's Pride Day & Nite. No selvage.
Knitting style: English. Stitch mount: Western. Needles: 3.5mm Knitter's Pride Day & Nite. No selvage.
Knitting style: Norwegian. Stitch mount: Combination. Needles: 3.5mm Knitter's Pride Day & Nite. No selvage.
Knitting style: English. Stitch mount: Combination. Needles: 3.5mm Knitter's Pride Day & Nite. No selvage.
Knitting style: Continental. Stitch mount: Combination. Needles: 3.5mm Knitter's Pride Day & Nite. No selvage.
Knitting style: Continental. Stitch mount: Eastern. Needles: 3.5mm Knitter's Pride Day & Nite. No selvage.
Knitting style: Continental. Stitch mount: Eastern. Needles: 3mm Tulip CarryCs. No selvage.
Knitting style: Continental. Stitch mount: Eastern. Needles: 3mm Tulip CarryCs. With 2-stitch faux i-cord selvage.
What I determined is that in order for my moss stitch to come out with no bias, I need to knit it Eastern (i.e. wrapping the yarn clockwise so that the leading leg of the stitch ends up in back). I have NO IDEA why this is.
I am now knitting another scarf swatch to make sure that my Eastern knitting works for the rest of the pattern. So far so good.

Made gauge swatches for the Earthly sweater I’m knitting in Patons Linen yarn, got gauge in number of stitches (20st=4”) on size 7 needles, wet blocked swatch grew a bit in length but width is stable. I used to never do gauge swatches, except lately it seemed important. Waiting for bamboo needle tips to arrive, the stainless steel ones I have are too slippy and I almost had them slip out. I machine washed/tumble dried my swatches as that is how the finished sweater will be laundered and they got so nice and soft. One time I didn’t do blocked swatches, and then accidentally put my Coachella tank in Tahki Bali ribbon yarn in the washing machine and it shrunk A LOT, I am still sad about it. It had fit perfectly before the washing mishap! I have been wanting to knit the Earthly for years, hoping my son will like the sweater as much as I do. The blue gray of the Sky color way is nice.

Working on some test swatches for the Constellation Quilt. I am inspired by some that were done with ice dyed fabric. Love the effect and want to get something similar to the very dark blue and purple one. Just with a thread of green in it.
So I am using scrap white cotton fabric to test out this technique. This first set of swatches is for just individual colours to see how they look on their own. As how the colours split when you ice dye is important to know before combining colours. It helps prevent me winding up with muddy colours or bad combos.

Going to knit a swatch for this stitch pattern today to see if I can make a summer top out of it and I'm excited :D!
Curious if I can alter it so have a triangular increase for the bust... Experiment time!

Swatched again with the yellow yarn because I still wasn’t happy with the fabric I was getting and yeah, it’s way better on smaller needles. Switching plans now to make a different sweater. The top segment (knitted on size 5s) is 22 stitches and 28 rows in 4” which puts it in a sport/dk category, not a worsted. The bottom segment was knitted on the 6s and is just too loose and floppy. I’d love to get this sweater going because I am so cold all the time. And I don’t have any knitting projects on the needles right now. I can’t work on the quilt every day because it makes my hands hurt so I definitely need to cast on—maybe later today if I get all my work done.

Oh my god.

I'm still trying to figure out how to knit moss stitch that isn't on a bias.
In my dishcloth experiments with Lily Sugar'n Cream yarn, knitting Eastern gave me straight moss stitch, so I decided to knit an Eastern swatch with the actual yarn I'm using to make this scarf (the Isobel Wrap by OhKayKnits): Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday Worsted. So of course now instead of leaning to the right it leans to the left. So I knit the second half of the swatch Combination style, in which knits are wrapped clockwise and purls are wrapped counterclockwise (the orange floss marks where I switched), but that leans way to the right. (I'm disappointed that the Combination didn't work, because it is definitely my new preferred way to knit.)
It would appear that the lean is determined more by how I work my knit stitches than how I work my purl stitches?
So my next experiment is to work all my right-side rows Eastern and all my WS rows Western.
Also it would appear that my stockinette and diagonal moss sections are coming out wider than the rest, so I'm going to knit them in a smaller needle.

Next batch of swatches for the constellation quilt. Testing out how the different colours play together. Half combine both blues, just navy, and with both accent colours or just the purple.
