There is something curious about painting and sketching over the top of old book print pages. I love when the pages are printed in a foreign language like the ones shown here. It adds a thrilling amount of mystery to the art and story of the page. I continue to pull color palettes from my surroundings as I explore even more remembered botanicals in one of my hand made journals. When you work as an artist it’s difficult to make time for hobby art. Then there are the days when you finally get the time to create just for hobby sake and it’s difficult to find the energy or the drive to make art at all. But it’s important to push through and create because it’s one of the things that makes us happy at our core. I work as an artist. I actually use the money I earn to pay bills and send my kids to college so it is important that I don’t lose focus or the will to create, but that means staying constantly inspired, creative and vigilant. Yes vigilant. Hyper aware of what is trending, how my work is being used outside of the classroom, and what I can do to keep my students feeling successful in what they learn. It’s hard. It’s every bit a real job. Tack on that you work from home, have a really big family and have all the usual chores and household to do items that every other mom has on her checklist. It’s hard to keep up, stay positive and turn a blind eye to the unkindnesses that can surface from time to time. But you know what? It’s also worth it. It’s worth seeing your students succeed, it’s worth reading how your art cheered someone on a day they needed it most, it’s worth it when something goes better than planned, and it’s worth it when you finally get a day to make art just for the sake of making art. If you know a working artist show them some extra love today! Many of them are also working to pay the bills. Many of them are moms, wives, caretakers, cooks, doers of laundry, lunch packers, homework checkers, babysitters and more. My all time favorite botanical mask. I am loving the less than perfect print I can pull on my printing plate when using stencils and masks with alcohol ink. I am all about the less than perfect. The pages of a handmade journal are among my favorites when they are crafted from vintage papers. Faded, crinkled, and held together with the stories of the past, they add a curious element to the art that blankets their surface. The perfect sound each old sheet makes as it is turned, the corners bent and dog-eared, signs of the life that has lived between the pages. It tugs at my heart. I will always love a fresh new journal-having let go of the fear of the blank page long ago-but those old ledger entries, the bits and pieces of someone else’s story, the notes and lines and music scores, they will always pull me in in a different way when I create. And there is no limit to what I throw at these delicate pages. Throw back to that time I hopped on FaceTime and painted with @sandikeene for hours. When you sit down to create with no agenda in mind it is freeing. It’s funny to see how our cast off papers evolve if we keep revisiting them. My rule? If it has color or marks on it it gets tossed in a basket for another day! This piece started life as a place to clean my brush. I was working with acrylics and by the time I was finished I had several beautiful green and blue square brush marks on my page. The next time I sat down to create I was working in watercolor. This sheet was still on my studio table and I began adding florals in pretty pinks, violets and greens. I never gave it a thought that I might continue to work on this piece in any other way but the next time I created it was still laying on the table and I picked it up and began doodling with a white pen. And so it went. Each day I pulled the sheet over for a few moments and added more color and marks. A few white oil pastel circles, scribbled pink soft pastel marks and I had roses. A black water soluble pencil and I had centers for my florals, and finally scattered drops of watercolor and pencil marks and I called it complete. What started life as a scrap ended as a colorful collage of different mediums. Do you ever revisit your scraps when you create?
