pelagornis palina!!! this one was SO much fun to do, especially with her absolutely wack proportions.

pelagornis, an extinct seabird that holds the record for the largest wingspan of any bird ever known, at 20-24 ft! that's about twice that of the largest extant bird's wingspan, the ~11ft wandering albatross. pelagornis is one of the pseudotooth birds- those serrations on the beak aren't actual teeth, but projections of the beak itself, used to snatch fish effectively.

for palina, i wanted to do something aquatic or relating to the water, certainly, and i thought the graceful vibes of an awesome seabird fit her well. pelagornis, as far as i know, is also thought to have frequented cliffsides for easier takeoffs, which meshes well with the cliff-filled terrain of the coastlands and her ward's volcanic home!

those wings took me so long. they're heavily referenced from the wings of albatrosses, since they have a very similar extremely long and thin shape, good for soaring over the ocean for extended periods of time. same goes for her little tail!

iscan!!! ive had his sketch in the backlog for so long now, it's nice to have finally finished him!!

iscan is a dorudon, an early whale! one of the smaller (relatively speaking- dorudon was still between 15 and 20 feet in length, that's just small compared to 50-60+ft basiliosaurus!) members of the basiliosauridae- a paraphyletic group encompassing many of the ancestors of today's whales. it even still had the vestigial remnants of hind legs!

obviously i had to choose something relating to the water for iscan, and i thought a whale of some sort fit his design and shapes very well. cetaceans in general are absolutely one of my favorite mammal groups, so it was super fun to play around with this design. additionally,i love how his hair is in his original design, and i tried to incorporate that wavy pattern into his markings here.

volo!! this might look familiar- it's a cleaned up, colored version of one of the sketches from my first volo post. since i've been doing all of these as colored illustrations, i wanted to fix up the first two posts (the twins & volo) to match the new standards.

volo's color palette is by far the most naturalistic of those so far, but i feel like it works well for him. i'm happy with his cute pawbs

NEXT UP!!! thylacine volo!! thylacine was my original choice for adaman, but i couldn't pass up the visual of it for volo, i think it works really well for him.

SABI!! she's a leaellynasaura! a small ornithopod with a super long tail. john conway's reconstruction of them in all yesterdays was an inspiration for this!

it was somewhat visible in the previous ones, but now that we've done a bipedal creature you can kinda see how i'm doing these anthros a bit different than my usual- trying to generally proportion them a bit more like "the same animal, but standing up more" versus my usual "human with animal head/legs/tail" sort of style. it's fun to work on!

for your extinct pkmn furry verse, does each characters size correspond to the size of the animal they are or are they all generally the size they would be as humans? This is...very necessary, for a drawing i have in mind.

sort of an inbetween! they're not actual size, but i've exaggerated the height differences a fair bit. sometimes based on the animal's height, sometimes on the characters (ie volo being real tall despite thylacines being pretty small). heres a little doodley height chart if it helps! doesn't have everybody, though.

(but, if youve got an idea you want to play with, feel free to do whatever you find the most fun.)
