I’ve had a thought about Alan Wake

But I want to do two things, preface this by saying I feel that Alan is a self insert for Sam Lake and his creative struggles. However, I see Sam as an incredible and delightful storyteller, and have enjoyed every game he has written for.

And secondly, this

To protect from spoilers though I doubt I’ll be going into much detail.

I have a feeling that Alan was really struggling with the fact that the only thing he’s done with any level of popularity is schlocky pulp fiction. I also feel that he isn’t the only one in the story who sees him this way.

So does the Dark Presence. I think he was picked not because he was the perfect writer, or because Thomas Zane wrote about him, but because he was a writer desperate to write a story that MEANT something, and the Dark Presence could give him that. I think it did so because it felt he was incapable of overcoming it. He just wasn’t GOOD enough.

But thankfully for everyone involved, they were both wrong.

He sits down with his knees pulled up, leaning back against the glass where she is sitting. Without the glass, they would be sitting back-to-back, keeping each other upright. As it is, she cannot so much as feel his warmth through the barrier. He takes a sip and lets out a muffled noise of disbelief before he swallows. "Shit, this is terrible."

Herald of Darkness:

#tldr its a banger mini-musical in its own dedicated level in a deeply affecting psychological horror video game. whats not to love#herald of darkness is an in-game segment that you get to play through with 4 different sections (one including some really fun combat)#it can last up to 30 minutes with different bridges and sections in the song that extend it further#the entire thing is recapping the entire story of titular character alan wake and his life before the games as well as the story of the 1st#all of which is happening in a nightmarish dream realm and this section is completely out of left field from the horror#of the rest of the game but yet fits in perfectly. they performed this live at the game awards last year and it was amazing#it makes sense when u know the story and the reason behind it. but its still a musical in a horror game#song-wise its also just a banger. baldr (ollie) hits some diabolical guitar solos. and theres a jazz segment. i could keep going#also the band that performs this is a real band (poets of the fall) acting as in-universe band old gods of asgard
