Thank you guys so much for the love and support in the wake of the vintage summer challenge/faces_and_style ordeal. The outpouring of solidarity and compassion for Asians in the costuming community in the face of this blatant oriental fetishism—that has made all the difference to me and to my friends affected by this. . . I wanted to say something yesterday, a statement on the racism Asians experience, or a thank you to everyone who reached out with love and kindness (or the willingness to fight racists), but I guess I just didn’t know what to say or how to say it. I’m still not entirely sure, because these kinds of things can really derail me. . . The thing is, it’s not just this one incident. When these things happen, it awakens a lifetime of racially based trauma that makes this singular event so much more difficult to process. . . For me, it was specifically the pulled back eye thing. It reminds me of so many bad experiences, from the kids who used to pull their eyes back and chant “we are Siamese if you please” at me when I was little, to college, when I was out clubbing with friends and a guy assumed that because I’m Asian, I must be a prostitute and informed me of that while pulling his eyes back when I pushed him off. . . So when these things happen, it’s not just “oh that’s gross behavior.” It’s “oh, that gross behavior reminds me of all the trauma that came before this, and how utterly alone and degraded and unsafe I felt because of it” . . Thank you to everyone who reached out. Your kindness mitigates the loneliness and smallness that I feel when these things happen.
