The Book of Lamentations continues with an exercise I had set for Patreon supporters of #liverpoolindependentartschool when I had introduced a few videos on the Andrew Loomis method of measuring and drawing the head. I had become fascinated by the simplicity of the process which draws much of its power from the understanding of the flattened side plane of the head and how the top, bottom and middle of that provide the construction lines for the features we recognise such as brow line, bottom of the nose and chin bone. The face falls roughly into thirds from the hairline down and the bottom third can be split again into thirds to find the lips and philtrum. I had asked the artists to render a series of classical sculpture heads from a range of angles using these measurements and take into account foreshortening. Of course I left the hair out because it can distract from the structure and measurements. The Book of Lamentations was one of recording a year of increased awareness of mortality. At the same time as this our business premises were lost to lockdown so we had to learn a whole new set of skills to continue delivering #liverpoolindependentartschool online. We learned Zoom for tutorials , Patreon and premier pro for editing and sharing instructional films, Google Earth as a screen share for field trips and various other tech to do with webcams and microphones for audible sound. Of course that still left a practical problem. How does one offer classes when whatever we choose to work about had to be available to all our artists at their end - which is tougher in lockdown. One thing we started to look at was self portrait with a concentration on the structure of the head. We had a period of drawing skulls, learning the shapes of the muscle structure and exploring the Loomis method of facial measurement.
