Made of more (2/3) Guinness storehouse. Giant sculpture celebrating Guinness and its more than 250 years of history. Realistic work by Blinkart, an eclectic collective of artists, designers and filmmakers, to make an eloquent tribute to the Guinness House and its long history that began in 1759 in Ireland. This wooden sculpture twelve feet high weighs two tons alone. David Wilson, who designed and produced the work, selected illustrators Robert Hunter, Bradley Jay, Micah Lidberg and the Village Green design studio to put on display strong symbols of the brand’s history. The engraving process was led by Corin Johnson. He was surrounded by a team of nine people responsible for imagining these drawings in 3D format, to facilitate the work of wood. Each scene was then carved by hand. Guinness storehouse (3/3) The original Guinness Storehouse, a grid structure of overlapping girders rising approximately 38 meters to a glazed roof, is believed to be the first major Chicago-style steel-framed, multi-storey building constructed in Europe. Built in 1904, it remained in commercial use until the late 1980s. In 1999, begin work on the conversion of this listed building, a task that necessitated the use of highly skilled engineering and construction methods. The new facilities, which overlook a vast atrium, were created by cutting out floors and revealing girders, thereby conveying a feeling of massive industrial strength. Guinness brewery (1/6) Before coming in... Following the example of the Chicago school of architecture, the building was the first multi-storey steel-framed building to be constructed in Ireland. The Storehouse was where grains, water, malted barley, hops and yeast were left to ferment to make Guinness until as recently as 1988. Now the place combines sleek high tech looks with early industrial architecture for a very cool effect. The building was used continuously as the fermentation plant of the Brewery until its closure in 1988, when a new fermentation plant was completed near the River Liffey. In 1997, it was decided to convert the building into the Guinness Storehouse, replacing the Guinness Hop Store as the Brewery's visitor centre. The Storehouse opened to the public on 2 December 2000. Guinness brewery (2/6) That’s my motto... MASH & BOIL This former fermenting house was designed by A.H. Hignett and Sir William Arrol for the Guinness Brewery. It is one of the first examples of multiple-storey steel frame buildings in Ireland and the west elevation brickwork is believed to be an early example of cladding. Its decorative brick and granite detailing provide articulation and decoration to a standard that is not usually seen in industrial buildings. It retains its early form and exuberant character. It has an imposing presence on the surrounding urban landscape acting as a landmark for the largest city centre industrial site. The Guinness Brewery was founded in 1759, by Arthur Guinness. It first developed on the south side of Saint James's Gate and later expanded on all sides. Robinson Keefe & Devane (architects) and Ove Arup (engineers) designed the building's conversion to a visitor's centre and rooftop extension of c.1998. Now referred to as a storehouse, it was originally a fermenting house, where wort (the liquor from brewing the malt) was fermented for several days with brewer's yeast to turn sugar into alcohol.
