Im posting these waaaay after the fact but #FaithRingold 's retrospect was beautiful. I saw her retrospective at a different New museum location, Broadway I think. .. or was it Chelsea, where were the in 98? I've been a fan of her work for ever,, taught art lessons inspired by her work. I remember meeting her in the early nineties at one of Danny Simmons gatherings. She is Phenomenal and inspiring.#contemporaryart #modernart #blackwomenartist #blackartist #blackartists #americanartist #americanartist #blackartistmovement #womenartists #blackartsmovement #blackartist #contemporaryartist #contemporaryart #powerfulart #retrospective so good I had to post more! https://www.instagram.com/p/CerZ0LuldJa/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#VOTE !!!! That IS the #POWERofThePEOPLE #America the #SOULofaNATION #Soul something #45 lacks Here #ElizabethCatlett’s 1965 cedar #sculpture #blackunity and #FaithRingold’s 1967 “American People Series #18: The Flag is Bleeding” opening @brooklynmuseum this week after it’s blockbuster success @tate museum in #London The groundbreaking show chronicling Black artistic practices in the #USA from 1963-83 one of the most politically, socially, and aesthetically revolutionary periods in #American history. Black artists across the country worked in communities, in collectives, and individually to create a range of #art responsive to the moment—including figurative and abstract painting, prints, and #photography; assemblage and sculpture; and performance. Many of the over 150 artworks in the exhibition directly address the unjust social conditions facing Black Americans. Working as a collective, members of the #AfriCOBRA group presented images of uplift and #empowerment. Barkley Hendricks, Emma Amos, and others painted everyday portraits of Black people with reverence and wit. All the artists embraced a spirit of aesthetic innovation, but some took this as their primary goal, often through experiments with color and paint application. This exhibition brings together for the first time the excitingly disparate practices of more than sixty Black artists from this important moment, offering an unparalleled opportunity to see their extraordinary works side by side. Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power is organized by #TateModern in collaboration with the #BrooklynMuseum and @CrystalBridgesMuseum of American Art, Bentonville, Arkansas, and @TheBroadMuseum, Los Angeles, and curated by Mark Godfrey @markgodfrey1973, Senior Curator, International Art, and @ZoeWhitley, Curator, International Art, Tate Modern. The Brooklyn Museum presentation is curated by Ashley James @ohashuhlee, Assistant Curator, Contemporary Art, Brooklyn Museum. #BarkleyHendriks “What’s Going On” and “Blood (Donald Formey)” • #FrankBowling 1971 “Texas Louise” • Faith Ringgold 1972 “United States of Attica” • #soulofanationbkm (at Brooklyn Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BnrLBDxlwtP/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=cdlsu6lrfuud
