"One of my favorite works in the Museum’s collection is this soothing, yet expressive, painting by the artist Ed Clark, which was exhibited in Soul of A Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power. Painted from 1978-1980, Clark used his signature technique of moving paint across the canvas with a janitor’s push broom instead of a paintbrush. The use of a broom, creating thick bands of color, imbues a sense of movement and monumentality to the work. For me, the painting conjures the image of a sunset—something I look forward to watching each night during quarantine."

#Repost @decarava with @get_repost ・・・ “The choice of whether, and how, to make art “black” was a lively issue. And the [Soul Of A Nation] — organized by Mark Godfrey and Zoe Whitley, curators @tate , and overseen in New York by Ashley James , an assistant curator @brooklynmuseum — is, among many other things, about the varied and inventive solutions artists came up with. Certain early responses feel almost counterintuitive. In the same years that [Norman] Lewis was injecting topical stories into abstract painting, Roy DeCarava was experimenting with making photographic portraiture abstract. The face of the young woman in his famous image “Mississippi Freedom Marcher, Washington, D.C., 1963” has the weight of a monument. But a shot of John Coltrane from the same year has an aura-like blur, and a picture called “Face Out of Focus” is a featureless glow, undefined by race or gender.” — Holland Cotter, The New York Times Coltrane on Soprano, 1963. Now open, Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power presents the complex work of Black artists who—at a time of dizzying political, social, and aesthetic revolution—produced some of the most innovative and electric art of the 20th century. See it now through February 3.

Meeting artist Jae Jarrell was a blessing beyond words! At almost 80 years old, she is a beautiful, powerful, funny, fashionista, and loving soul! She stood tall and proud with her beautiful artwork in the form of dresses inspired by the Black Revolution and it was such an honor to meet and be embraced by her! She especially loved my daughter Imani and reached out and gave her the warmed hug and left her with some words is wisdom! #soulofanation #brooklynmuseum #soulofanationbkm (at Brooklyn Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/BntIIwTDG_-UGcVIwOxTLCmDO-5vCfFuYLOWJI0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=16y28937fjjfo
