Big fan of The Charon Situation being just so incurably screwed up. If ever there were a person equipped to have full control over an adult man’s free will, it’s definitely not the Lone Wanderer. Even the most educated, well-meaning, and genuinely righteous LW couldn’t handle the responsibility. She’s a teenager raised in an insular totalitarian ant farm who’s suddenly been thrust into a world with no authorities, no guidance.
Which creates a wonderful dynamic with Charon. If Ahzrukhal is to be believed, he was raised this way - he never had the chance to be an adult, taking risks, shouldering responsibility, gaining independence. His parents probably weren’t in the picture for long. I imagine his lack of agency causes him to be emotionally immature sometimes - how can you learn to solve problems like an adult if all the adults in your life treat you like a weapon or a dog or a houseplant?
This guy has to be so screwed up in every way. According to the game guide, he just doesn’t sleep?? Or Azzy never let him sleep? He has that idiosyncratic formal speech pattern, he worries a lot, and the only personal detail we know about him is that guns make him happy. He also kind of openly hates the player’s guts sometimes (he’s sarcastic when given certain commands, is joyfully mean about the GECK, and basically sentences you to death in the non-canon base game ending). No matter how hard the LW tries, some damaged part of him will always resent her authority. She could be a thousand times kinder, fairer, and more just than all his previous employers combined, but she’s still one of them. He still doesn’t have free will.
That power is illegitimate for a reason. There’s no way not to misuse it eventually, especially for a teenager with endless stress and trauma of her own. You’re fighting and you tell him to shut up so you can have the last word. You get a significant other and he gets left home with the dog some nights. You take a quest path he doesn’t approve of and he has to grit his teeth and go along with it.
It’s not fair, can never be fair, and that’s the perfect dynamic to explore. Because as much as he hates her, he loves her too. She literally saved him from Hell on earth, gave him the opportunity to be a force for good. He’s not dumb, he knows that the problem is the contract, not her. Over the years they’ll mature together and learn how to fix a lot of these problems. There are so many unique challenges to creating a healthy relationship out of… that.
(A lot of writers have the contract get destroyed, especially for 😉 reasons. There’s nothing in the game indicating that can’t happen, and it works fine for their purposes. I just think it’s more fun for it to be a continuous obstacle.)

fallout 3 companions reaction to lone being a shameless dirty talker who likes to get them hot/bothered by not doing anything when they're interested (just so they can eventually explode with built up lust)
Game: Fallout 3
Category: Companion Preferences
Description: Lone likes to get them hot and bothered. They react to having enough of that.
Warnings: Semi-sexual content, Mentions of sex
Butch
He is all for a good, long game of teasing– it actually excites him. Butch can last all day with being dirty talked to, however once it reaches the day’s end and he realizes that Lone never intends on actually acting on their words, his excitement turns to frustration. He’s gone too many days being the brunt of Lone’s dirtiest lines, being eyed by them as if they want him as much as he wants them, and then ignored by nightfall, left to handle his business on his own. He swears that Lone gets themselves off to his misery in that, rather than getting off to him. This going on for weeks now was wearing his patience thin. It seemed very obvious to him that he was into Lone, reciprocating pretty much all of their advances with the dirty talk.
With it being the middle of the summer, Butch could no longer stand to wear his black leather jacket. He now just wears his simple white tank top and jeans. Lone uses this style as their main topic of dirty talk quite often since the weather began to get as hot as sir DeLoria himself. “You must be sneaking off to workout or something. Looking finer with each day that passes.” Lone smirks at Butch as their lustful taunting begins.
“The times of the day when I’m not with you? You think I’m not sneaking off to meet with some broad?” Butch retorts, his response immediately halting Lone in their tracks. Their brows contort to a quizzed expression.
“So you’re seeing someone then?” They ask him, their face heating up with a feeling one can only describe as embarrassment. How could Butch not tell them that he had a partner? He just let them continue flirting with him everyday though he was seeing someone?
“I’m not.”
“So this broad doesn’t exist then?”
“That depends. Is this going somewhere or do you just enjoy getting me all hot ‘n bothered?”
“Oh, this is definitely going somewhere.” Lone takes Butch’s confirmation of his single status and confession of interest as an invitation. That somewhere was straight to their rented bed in Rivet City to work out Butch’s many weeks of frustration.
Charon
Charon didn’t quite understand that Lone was flirting with him. He was very hesitant to even respond to the dirty talk at all, giving simple grunts of acknowledgment to keep Lone happy. In his mind it was simple: He was a ghoul, they were a human, their flirting was a joke. It wasn’t until the dirty talk began to get more personal, along with more time traveling alongside each other day-in and day-out, it made him realize that maybe Lone does have a strange attraction to him. Their words, though very vulgar, were sincere. Instead of feeling false rejection by imagining they were making a joke out of him, he now felt want.
“I’m thinking maybe we can close the distance a little, in combat of course. Having you closer is all I need.” Lone exaggerates their play on words to Charon.
“I always got your back.” Charon says gruffly. He hesitates with his next words, “But I’m starting to wonder if there are other reasons you’d want me much closer. You can definitely handle yourself.”
“Other reasons?” Lone plays dumb.
“Are there?”
They grin, looking him up and down. “Yeah, maybe there are some other reasons. But I could give you some reasons to want to be close to me too.”
“You don’t even have to try, Boss.”
Clover
Clover was actually the one to begin the dirty talk in their dynamic. She appreciated Lone in many ways and was with them quite often, so it was no surprise that she was attracted to them. She made them very aware that she was willing to go as far as they wanted to, however she was confused when they reciprocated her dirty talk with their own but made no advances in their relationship.
“If I had a cap for each time I watched you bend over to pick something up, we wouldn’t have to be scavenging anymore.” Lone curiously watches Clover bend again to pick up a combat knife and a bobby pin box from a corpse.
“Keep talking like that, sugar, and I’m going to have you pinned down for hours.” Clover says, her voice sounding sweet and innocent, complete opposite of her promise she uttered.
“Well, if you’re offering…”
“Hm, you really think you can handle me?”
Jericho
He doesn’t hold back returning dirty dialogue when Lone begins their own dirty talk. If anything, he was only surprised that a pristine Vaultie would want to do anything remotely sexual with a dirty ex-raider who’s twice their age. This fact, however, becomes very apparent when their constant dirty talk never goes any further, which begins to frustrate Jericho. He’s left many nights taking off to finish his own business because his companion started the job and didn’t want to finish. It takes him longer than he would like to admit to figure out they are toying with him. When he finally pieces it together, he is practically fuming.
“You always avoid telling me those raider stories. I bet you were a real big, bad raider. You used to take what you wanted, huh?”
“I still am and I still do. You don’t notice?”
“Hm, guess you don’t want me bad enough then.” Lone shrugs him off promptly, knowing their teasing would send him over the edge. They attempt to walk on like usual, however Jericho stops them in their tracks and spins them around. They’re pinned against the wall in seconds.
“Uh-uh, not getting away this time, Vaultie. I think it’s time for you to act on your words, huh?”
Sarah Lyons
She isn’t one for games—Sarah is very much an upfront person especially when it comes to personal feelings, as she never knows when her last battle may be, so time is precious. Lone toying around with their own feelings towards her irritated the soldier to no end. She made them aware of her irritation when she first realized they were flirting with her; Them being somewhat vulgar in their words of affection, which made her heart flutter for a moment before she grew annoyed with the circumstances. Since then they attempted to keep their dirty talk somewhat on the down-low, however Sarah would call them out for any cheeky behavior and instantly shut it down.
“Hey Sentinel, guess what I’m wearing under this power armor.” Lone begins their antics with Sarah, causing her to audibly sigh. “I’m winking by the way—“ They say from behind their power armor helmet.
“Knight, I shouldn’t have to remind you of the consequences this conversation may lead to.”
“Do you wish to punish me, Sentinel?” Lone easily drives the nail in the coffin with that comment, bringing Sarah to her breaking point.
“Out of the power armor now. That’s an order, Knight.” She commands, also beginning to step out of her own suit of armor. As soon as the two are both out of their armor, Sarah has Lone against the wall with the collar of their shirt twisting up tightly in her fist. “Enough with the games. What do you want?”
“This exact position, in your quarters, everyday, for the rest of our lives.”
“Good answer.”

I’ve noticed something about Charon!
After every enemy he shoots and kills, he always fires an extra round into the corpse. Now....Maybe I just smoke way too much weed when I play Fallout 3, but I swear I've seen Charon do this multiple times.
I've replayed Fallout 3 a couple of times and Charon is always my go to companion. (After I get a fuckton of caps, smh) And this most recent play through I have been staring at his character a bit more than usual.
When you recruit Charon and he kills Ahzrukhal, he shoots him twice, even though the first shotgun blast did the job just fine. I've never paid this much mind, thinking it was ONLY just because of his hatred for Ahzrukhal. But now I've noticed he does this with all enemies! (Well most, he and Dogmeat kill shit fast af and I don't always see it)
This is just kind of interesting to me! Always making sure an enemy is dead by doing a double tap is a great reassurance in the apocalypse. It totally makes sense for Charon's character as well. He is a perceptive person, and has probably had more than his share of bad experiences with things not being quite dead. I also wonder if he was taught this skill or if he learned it the hard way?
Even if this is just my imagination it’s something neat to think about with his character!!
