INTRODUCING THE 80S DOCUMENT... a comprehensive doc on this funny mentioned-only raider faction that is incredibly fucking cool and a crime no one has mentioned them yet
this is more or less a compilation of different canon, semi-canon and fanon references! most of it taken from the hearts of iron 4 mod old world blues, joshua sawyer's simple and sprinkled some fanon from my head in here as well. this is to hopefully make other people aware of these guys!
a MASSIVE thanks to my partner alex for helping me write this up, the tops server members for lore council, esseress and everyone else who i rambled on and on about these guys. thank you so much
you can find the document here!
(and also under the cut!)
The 80s are a gang of raiders that operate along the Northern California 80 Freeway, mostly in the region northeast of the lawless, uncontrolled city of Sacramento. They occupy their own territory stretching between New California and the shores of Great Salt Lake, bordering the land of their longtime enemies the White Legs.
They are known for raiding frontier towns for supplies, kidnapping people, their tireless pursuit of enemies and for their occasional use of motorcycles. They are rightly feared for their ability to cover large areas of land with very few men using said motorcycles. They have recently spread out over a larger area, notably the I-80, due to the collapse of the Nevada Desert Rangers and the NCR's inability to patrol or keep tabs on the territory.
History
After the bombs desolated the country, the 80s began as a group of people that banded together out of necessity and trekked through the I-80, believing that the highway had to lead somewhere safe. The early origins of the 80s are muddled by word of mouth and mostly forgotten, but they fully coalesced into a raider faction when others learned to fear them.
The first peak of the 80s’ was reached when they took Sacramento for their own. For the first time, many 80s began to settle down and build a raiding community, often attacking smaller settlements in the area. These transgressions eventually led to the New California Republic expanding and securing its borders by taking Sacramento back, forcing the 80s out of the city.
The 80s then tore through Nevada, following the I-80 and launching massive raids on almost every community they came across for supplies and equipment, including NCR cities such as New Reno or Vault City. This led to even greater notoriety and, despite having been mauled by the NCR, drove fear into the heart of the Republic as they made their way to Utah.
Currently, the 80s have mostly settled in Wendover, expanding it into a town. Most of their conflicts lie with the neighboring White Legs, and they await the opportunity to strike back at the NCR and reclaim Sacramento.
Culture
The 80s primary philosophies are that other 80s come before all else, that the enemy of their enemy is their friend, and that settling down is the opposite of freedom. They value a wild and free lifestyle, cheap thrills, mechanical and driving prowess, and the road. While some communities support them along the roads, they are their own priority above all, and many relations with other groups are sustained through physical threat.
While all 80s can be defined by a few common traits, most of them are decentralized and spread across various chapters. Each has their own rules, hierarchies and banners. Some chapters are nomadic, while others settle in towns they have conquered, and others live in self-made settlements by the road.
Identification between each chapter varies from chapter to chapter, with the most common traits being tattoos, body art, patches on armour and jackets, and so on. While in-fighting between chapters is common, the 80s are generally extremely close-knit compared to other raider factions. In most chapters, higher-ranking members wear red or blue I-80 road signs, while regular members wear the more common green signs, and initiates and hangarounds have no signs.
While most 80s are born into their respective chapters, the 80s will occasionally take on new initiates that are young or have potential when it comes to driving and repair skills. An initiate, or hangaround, mostly runs errands for fully-fledged 80s until the others have decided they are eligible for an initiation ritual. Most potential initiates have to go through a ritual to prove their worth, such as salvaging a motorcycle and making it their own.
Economy
When the 80s started out, they were disorganized and originally had to rely on raiding to get by. During their early years, raiding was quite profitable in the wasteland, and this time period would later be called the golden age of raiding. As time went on, however, theft and slavery became unsustainable as societies grew, and many chapters of the 80s were forced to turn to other means of survival.
Using their vehicles to travel greater distances faster than any other society could manage, many chapters of the 80s turned to drug trade, gun running, package delivery, caravan running and trading. Many chapters have become their own communities, and some have settled in certain locations to farm. There are still active raiding chapters, but in the present they are few and far between.
Despite no longer solely relying on raiding, some chapters still intimidate weaker communities into giving tribute to them, having no issue doing so with their vehicles. They also charge a travel tax on all outsiders that would cross their roads.
Military and Technology
The 80s are well-known for their expertise in and quantity of vehicles ranging from the common motorcycle to the large semi-truck. The 80s scavenge, repair and even build their own vehicles, and almost every member at least has their own motorcycle, as a common initiation rite requires new members to salvage their own bike. They also find and use old schematics to improve upon their designs, or create their own from scratch.
Most 80s make their own equipment when they cannot scavenge, from tires and tools to homemade fuel. Many bikes have been made to run on ethanol and other biofuels, while others run on energy cells, fusion cells, or any energy source that’s available.
Using these vehicles, the 80s utilize speed to break through enemy walls in battle, and often overwhelm their opponents before they can truly attack. They rely on hit-and-run tactics, and as a result have great offense and poor defense. For example, one common attack involves holding out a machete while driving by the enemy; destructive, but leaves the rider open for many attacks.
The most commonly used weapons are anything close and decimating. Many 80s carry shotguns, automatic guns and throwable explosives that are relatively easy to use while riding.
Politics and Diplomatic Relations
The cultural tenet of the 80s coming before anyone else carries into their politics. Little of the outside world affects their internal politics or laws (or lack thereof). They are somewhat hypocritical in that they believe in freedom for themselves and no one else. The 80s have no one leader, and overall are decentralized as a faction.
Each chapter has their own subset of laws, or none at all. While most 80s are close-knit, there is currently infighting between chapters as they debate on whether to settle down or continue raiding. Some believe that settling down goes against what the 80s stand for and would be abandoning their origins, while others believe they won’t stand a chance against other factions if they continue to raid.
The 80s are relatively cold toward other factions, with few allies and many enemies. They are generally neutral toward other raiding factions, such as the Jackals or the Vipers, but would put aside their differences for the sake of attacking the greater enemy, such as with the Great Khans or the Powder Gangers. No matter what, however, they will make it clear that they are their own priority.
The New California Republic is one of the 80s greatest and most powerful enemies. From the very beginning, the 80s and the NCR have fought each other as the 80s raided civilians and the NCR tried to stomp them out along with other raider factions. This culminated in the NCR taking Sacramento and forcing the 80s to leave for Utah, marking the NCR as the 80s’ worst enemy. Any 80s would not hesitate at any opportunity to get back at the NCR, no matter how petty or who they would have to ally with.
After the 80s were forced to travel to Utah, their territory began to border the White Legs’, and they frequently intruded on their land. This has led to many skirmishes between the two factions as they compete for their own territory.
While Caesar’s Legion does not have much presence in the West, many 80s have heard of this new threat against the NCR, and most who have are eager for any potential ally to get back at the NCR for Sacramento. The 80s know little of the Legion or what would happen to them if the Legion was successful, but are willing to do anything if it meant victory.

Fallout : thesaviorofthewasteland/
JONATHAN : I’m a huge fan of the Fallout Franchise, especially New Vegas, and the first time we ever cosplay back in 2014 was characters in New Vegas. The initial direction of our version all started with a certain character that my brother cosplay as Raul Tejada, a mechanic ghoul from Hidalgo, Mexico.
We took notice of how little information of Mexico had in the Fallout Universe, and we felt that they should include more info of whatever happened to Mexico with its people, towns, and culture after The Great War. With this little info given in the game or on Fallout wiki, I thought of why not just create something in our own and form it on our cosplay.
Just like Fallout 4’s Minutemen, we decide to create our own cosplay version of the Minutemen with a Mexico twist. Instead of the American Revolution theme, the theme is mainly focused on the 1910 Mexican Revolution. I took the time to watched documentaries and read about the Mexican Revolution to get a sense of an idea of how we going to collab with the Fallout theme. We drew inspiration from Revolutionary of Francisco “Pancho” Villa and Emiliano Zapata, the two well-known leaders of the Mexican Revolution, and its rebels soldiers to create this unique style look that gives its ‘Revolucionarios Mexicana’ theme and keep it Fallout related.
We even have given the name of this Fallout’s Mexico Revolution Minutemen group, “The Saviors of the Wasteland.” We have been cosplaying as them for 5 years and we already left a mark on these conventions. I could say this is one of my favorite cosplay or more like my cosplay dream.
IVAN : The cosplay now has been upgraded each time we go to a different convention every year. But its made from a common 50’s suit jacket from thrift stores and we spray paint tan to recreate the dust/sand/debris our characters go through, so we make sure there’s no such thing as clean in our fallout world.
The sombrero is basically the superhero cape of our cosplay, they might all look the same, but they’re all unique in their own way. Mine, for example, is the exact same as Raul Tejada’s sombrero as a tribute to the character who helps me start my cosplay. But we never spend a lot of money on our cosplays, we always make it affordable or recycle old clothes we don’t wear anymore and give them a new purpose in life with our cosplay. Even though our cosplay is like another fallout character we all ways throw little Easter eggs from movies or video games onto our cosplay as little details.
Also we are very careful about what we wear, we try to keep it the clothes Latino or something us Mexicans wear in our everyday lives, for example, the boots I wear are boots the Mexican Bikers wear and the stitching on my shirt that keep my sleeves together is little nod to a Mexican actor on a show who has stitching on his biker vest that represents the Mexican flag colors. All in all the cosplay is 100% Latino driven.
JONATHAN : There's been a lot of stories as far I can remember while cosplaying as Fallout Mexico's Minutemen. One of the cool interactions we get while cosplaying is seeing the excitement look from Latino congoers and having their picture taken with them. Sometimes they tell us of how ‘Chido’ (awesome) we look, refer to us as Pancho Villa or Emiliano Zapata, or have a conversation with us about their hometown in Mexico. One unique interaction we have in this convention was meeting with a photographer from Mexico City who told us that he was a big fan of Fallout and how very amazed when he knew the right away that we were cosplaying Fallout Mexicana Revolucionarios! He begins to tell us how we were completely different from other cosplayers and just loves the whole idea of our version of Fallout.
I remember walking around the River Walk with my brother and friend while wearing my costume and got to see so many reactions to people on the walkaway, restaurants, and even on the riverboats. Of course, as a cosplayer, I get stopped multiple times to get people's pictures and all and continue to walk around before we walked back to our hotel. As we were walking across a bridge, I heard a yell "Viva Emiliano Zapata!" from an old man who was in the riverboat heading toward us, and I look at him and I proudly yelled "Viva Zapata!" with my hand up in the air. Then, I get applause and cheering from all the people in the boat as they were taking pictures of me. That was one of the biggest cool moments I ever got and definitely will cherish that memory forever.

I’ve been meaning to do this for ages ; I find I very rarely have inspiration to write impromptu threads . . . which I realize is a problem when most people do not like plotting or are too nervous to approach me. I also know it’s especially hard to plot when the muses aren’t in the same fandom. So , anyway , underneath the cut are some of my favorite genres and some vague-ish ideas I’d like to explore. Please do not repost or reblog this list. This isn’t a resource for people to use. I will block anyone that tries to use it as such.
If something piques your interest , please let me know! You can contact me through Tumblr IMs , asks , fanmail , Skype ( suniisms ) or Discord ( Liya#8587 ).
Genres & Themes ;
modern / urban fantasy / horror   ;   modern / mythology / horror   ;   surreal / horror   ;   near future / cyberpunk   ;   far future / cyberpunk    ;   space opera   ;   steampunk   ;   high fantasy   ;   soulmates / soul binding / symbiotic supernatural partnerships / contracts / etc.   ;   pre-apocalypse   ;   post apocalypse   ;   most dark themes   ;   any time period / mythology   ;   adventure / world exploration   ;   world death & world rejuvenation   ;   generally any combination of the above is good   ;
( PLEASE NO SLICE OF LIFE. THIS IS MY ESCAPE FROM LIFE , THANKS. )
Ideas
Yes, they’re mostly based off books / movies / old roleplays / etc. Please assume that I do not want to simply follow the story. I want to create a new story that can co-exist with what occurs in the original story. These are just building blocks for our creativity. I’d also love to be able to keep our muses as close to who they are in their “canon” verse as possible.
Water World ; All of the world’s land has been covered by the oceans. Resources are scarce , and closely guarded. There are legends of an island somewhere in the ocean that has fresh water and growing land , but between the monsters lurking below and the gangs lurking above , life is too hard and short for most people to even consider searching for such a place.
Sand Omnibus ; In a future where the planet’s water has disappeared , people spend their lives digging wells with the use of ancient technology that allows them to swim through the sand , as if it were water. Not everyone can use this technology , partially because there’s a finite amount of equipment , and partially because it takes a lot of skill to dive into the sand and not be crushed by the weight. These “divers” are also often treasure hunters, seeking precious metals from the ancient skyscrapers below the sand.
Fallout Universe ; Here’s a wiki link because I’m lazy , and might be assuming everyone knows what the Fallout series is.
Ghost Hunt ; Honestly , it’s an anime about a group of people that put ghosts to rest. It’s like the show “Ghost Hunters” except better because the ghosts generally take on physical form and it’s just more exciting.
Rage Virus ; “ it starts small—-just a few people.  but it spreads fast.  in a week, it’s a national epidemic.  in three, it’s worldwide.  people start killing each other out of a vicious, uncontrollable rage, but they still maintain their earlier intelligence and human cunning.  very few members of the population are unaffected by the virus, and muse a and muse b are two of them.  alone together, they must try not to be killed, while wondering the whole time if they can trust the other, or if this is just a plan and the virus lurks inside of them, waiting to come to the surface. “    --- credit goes to this person , who’s since archived their blog and deleted their second blog
Pacific Rim ; ( I have no ideas other than Sora would totally get involved despite Tenka telling him no )
Hunger Games ; Plot One: Both muses are tributes. This will have a tragic end because I don’t want to break the series canon. Plot Two: One muse returns to their District as the victor of their games. The second muse gets to help muse one find some kind of peace. Plot Three: UHM. LET ME THINK ABOUT THAT.

Shoutouts
8 Sept 1965 – The Monkees were born, a small ad in New York’s Daily Variety on this day attracted 437 young men interested in forming the world’s first "manufactured" boy band –The Monkees. It happened after young movie and TV director Bob Rafelson, looking for his big break, dreamt up a show about a struggling rock band. He ran a production company called Raybert with his business partner Bert Schneider, whose father was the head of Columbia Pictures. The TV division of Columbia agreed in 1965 to go ahead with the project. All that was then needed was a band – or, at least, “four insane boys” who could literally play the part. - https://www.onthisday.com/articles/hey-hey-were-the-monkees
9 Sept 1999 – Sega Dreamcast was released in America, it was the first in the sixth generation of video game consoles, preceding Sony's PlayStation 2, Nintendo's GameCube and Microsoft's Xbox. The Dreamcast was Sega's final home console, marking the end of the company's 18 years in the console market. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast
9 Sept 1839 - English scientist and astronomer John Herschel takes 1st glass plate photograph, which still exists, and experimented with some colour reproduction, noting that rays of different parts of the spectrum tended to impart their own colour to a photographic paper. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Herschel

He was primarily known for his voice work, which included Digimon, Cowboy Bebop and Space Pirate Captain Harlock, having started voice acting for the English-language versions of anime in 1980; providing the voice of Lord Zedd, the main antagonist of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers; and Finster, the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers monster maker. He also portrayed a Paul McCartney look-alike on the popular sitcom Family Matters, and later in his career appeared in several productions by comedy duo Tim & Eric. He died at the age of 70 in Los Angeles,California - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Axelrod_(actor)
9 Sept 1976 - Mao Zedong, also known as Chairman Mao, was a Chinese communist revolutionary who became the founding father of the People's Republic of China (PRC), which he ruled as the Chairman of the Communist Party of China from its establishment in 1949 until his death in 1976. Idelogically a Marxist–Leninist, his theories, military strategies, and political policies are collectively known as Maoism. A controversial figure, Mao is regarded as one of the most important and influential individuals in modern world history. He is also known as a political intellect, theorist, military strategist, poet, and visionary. Supporters credit him with driving imperialism out of China, modernising the nation and building it into a world power, promoting the status of women, improving education and health care, as well as increasing life expectancy as China's population grew from around 550 million to over 900 million under his leadership. Conversely, his regime has been called autocratic and totalitarian, and condemned for bringing about mass repression and destroying religious and cultural artifacts and sites. It was additionally responsible for vast numbers of deaths with estimates ranging from 30 to 70 million victims through starvation, prison labour and mass executions. He died from a heart attack at the age of 82 in Beijing - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong
9 Sept 1997 - Burgess Meredith, American actor, director, producer, and writer. Active for more than six decades, Meredith has been called "a virtuosic actor" and "one of the most accomplished actors of the century". A lifetime member of the Actors Studio by invitation, he won several Emmys, was the first male actor to win the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor twice, and was nominated for two Academy Awards. He established himself as a leading man in Hollywood with critically acclaimed performances as George Milton in Of Mice and Men, Ernie Pyle in The Story of G.I. Joe, and the narrator ofA Walk in the Sun. Meredith was known later in his career for his appearances on The Twilight Zone and for portraying arch-villain The Penguin on the 1960s TV series Batman and boxing trainer Mickey Goldmill in the Rocky film series. For his performances in The Day of the Locust and Rocky, he received nominations for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. He later starred in the comedy Foul Play and the fantasy film Clash of the Titans. He narrated numerous films and documentaries during his long career, including Twilight Zone: The Movie. He died from complications of Alzheimer's disease and melanoma at the age of 89 in Malibu, California - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burgess_Meredith
Famous Birthdays
9 Sept 1828 - Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, usually referred to in English as Leo Tolstoy, was a Russian writer who is regarded as one of the greatest authors of all time. He received multiple nominations for Nobel Prize in Literature every year from 1902 to 1906, and nominations for Nobel Peace Prize in 1901, 1902 and 1910, and his miss of the prize is a major Nobel prize controversy. he is best known for the novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, often cited as pinnacles of realist fiction. He first achieved literary acclaim in his twenties with his semi-autobiographical trilogy, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth, and Sevastopol Sketches, based upon his experiences in the Crimean War. Tolstoy's fiction includes dozens of short stories and several novellas such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Family Happiness, and Hadji Murad. He also wrote plays and numerous philosophical essays. In the 1870s Tolstoy experienced a profound moral crisis, followed by what he regarded as an equally profound spiritual awakening, as outlined in his non-fiction work A Confession. His literal interpretation of the ethical teachings of Jesus, centering on the Sermon on the Mount, caused him to become a fervent Christian anarchist and pacifist. Tolstoy's ideas on nonviolent resistance, expressed in such works as The Kingdom of God Is Within You, were to have a profound impact on such pivotal 20th-century figures as Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Tolstoy also became a dedicated advocate of Georgism, the economic philosophy of Henry George, which he incorporated into his writing, particularly Resurrection. He was born in Yasnaya Polyana, Tula Governorate - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_Tolstoy
9 Sept 1890 - Colonel Harland David Sanders, American businessman, best known for founding fast food chicken restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (also known as KFC) and later acting as the company's brand ambassador and symbol. His name and image are still symbols of the company. The title 'colonel' was honorary – a Kentucky Colonel – not the military rank. Sanders held a number of jobs in his early life, such as steam engine stoker, insurance salesman and filling station operator. He began selling fried chicken from his roadside restaurant inNorth Corbin, Kentucky, during the Great Depression. During that time Sanders developed his "secret recipe" and his patented method of cooking chicken in a pressure fryer. Sanders recognized the potential of the restaurant franchising concept, and the first KFC franchise opened in South Salt Lake, Utah in 1952. When his original restaurant closed, he devoted himself full-time to franchising his fried chicken throughout the country. The company's rapid expansion across the United States and overseas became overwhelming for Sanders. In 1964, then 73 years old, he sold the company to a group of investors led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey for $2 million ($16.2 million today). However, he retained control of operations in Canada, and he became a salaried brand ambassador for Kentucky Fried Chicken. He was born in Henryville, Indiana - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonel_Sanders

11 Sept 1940 - The American Mathematical Society met at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, a few hundred miles north of the building of Bell Labs in New York, where was the Complex Number Computer. George Stibitz arranged to have the computer connected by telephone lines (28-wire teletype cable) to a teletype unit installed there. The Complex Number Computer worked well, and there is no doubt it impressed those who used it. The meeting was attended by many of America's most prominent mathematicians, as well as individuals who later led important computing projects. The Dartmouth demonstration foreshadowed the modern era of remote computing, but remote access of this type was not repeated for another ten years. - https://history-computer.com/ModernComputer/Relays/Stibitz.html

Were you previously aware that the Sprtel-Wood 9700's name is a tribute to two individuals?
Joshua Sawyer revealed on Formspring that it is a combination of Dr. Scott Sprtel and Brian Wood, lead designer at Relic Entertainment. Both passed away in vehicle accidents.
We've recently created a page dedicated to memorials/tributes throughout the Fallout series. You can view the page here:
