After doing some research I feel confident in saying that this recording with Carolee Carmello as Trina is from 1992!
The first national tour of Falsettos began in December 1992 starring Carolee Carmello as Trina and Adrian Zmed as Marvin; Zmed was also a temporary replacement for Michael Rupert on Broadway. This recording clearly isn't from the tour, as Stephen Bogardus and Chip Zien are also starring, so it's from his time as a replacement. He sounds a little unfamiliar with the role here, which in combination with other evidence makes me think that this recording is pre-tour. It would have to have been after Carmello left her role as Cordelia as well, which was at the end of July 1992. My guess would be that once it was decided Zmed would play the tour with her she came back to Broadway to practice her new role alongside him for a few shows.
Additionally, I'm pretty sure Jason is played by Jonathan Kaplan, who left the show in late 1992!! It really looks like him, and that would fit with this timeline. (Exciting, bc I didn't realize any recordings of his performance existed!)

Next up is an oddball in Zappa’s catalog. Fifteen years into his career, FZ had his second accidental hit single—first it was Yellow Snow, then it was Valley Girl. Both novelty songs appreciated on the radio more for their jokey basis than their musical content. It drove him a little crazy, but he didn’t complain about the money. He plowed the proceeds from this hit into his dream, getting a symphony orchestra to play his serious compositions (the result, by the London Symphony Orchestra, was yet another bitter disappointment, one that made him basically give up this dream). Because of Valley Girl, this is another of FZ’s most ubiquitous albums in used record bins. If your record shop has one Zappa record, it’s Zoot Allures. If they have two, the second is Over-Nite Sensation. But if they have three, the third is Ship Arriving Too Late to Save a Drowning Witch.
Valley Girl is a collaboration between Zappa and his 14-year-old daughter, the infamously named Moon Unit. Frank loved his children, but there’s also no doubt that he was an absent father, spending all the time he wasn’t touring holed up in his home studio—apparently he invited Moon in when she slipped a note under the door begging to spend some time with him. (I don’t remember which of the many Zappa bios I’ve read had that detail.) He was amused by her imitation of the vapid way her classmates talked, so he recorded her improvising dialogue and gave the type the name of “valley girl” after the San Fernando Valley. The song caught on in a big way, and Moon fully deserves her co-artist credit on this—the song’s success is 90% about how funny this 14-year-old is. The song was an immediate hit and provoked a national fascination with the new valley girl stereotype, so all that stuff in our culture (“gag me with a spoon” and all that) can be traced back to Frank and Moon.
The rest of the album is alright; not his best, not his worst. Drowning Witch and No Not Now are good, I Come from Nowhere is irritating. Steve Vai is good on it, original Mother of Invention Roy Estrada pops back up to offer some falsetto vocals. But if it wasn’t for Valley Girl, this would be among Zappa’s most negligible records. It’s also followed by a bunch of records that I have purposefully left out of my collection: The Man from Utopia, which is just annoying to me; Baby Snakes, which is an ok live album but not worth hunting down; London Symphony Orchestra, which is unsuccessful… I do want to own the Boulez Perfect Stranger album, but I’ve never seen one in person yet, and it’s not a high priority. We’re in the Zappa doldrums here in the ‘80s.

Did you know that the Broadway musical Falsettos, written and composed by James Lapine and William Finn (it's sung through so there's no dialogue), was originally 3 separate plays? It was a series of 3 one Act plays, featuring mainly the same characters but all following the male lead, Marvin. The first show, titled In Trousers, was written in 1979 and is shown from Marvin's perspective as he reflects on his life and questions his sexuality. The second play, March of the Falsettos (1981), shows the aftermath of him leaving his wife and child to be with his lover, Whizzer. His wife, Trina, then falls in love with Marvin's psychiatrist (and a whole bunch of other shit happens but I'm talking about the weird history of the musical, not the plot). The 3rd and final play, Falsettoland, written in 1990, shows Marvin turning his life around just in time for Whizzer to be diagnosed with AIDS.
March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland were then adapted into a single two-Act musical (Falsettos) that made its Broadway premier in 1992; the show won 2 Tonys for Best Original Score and Best Book of a Musical, and was nominated for 5 others. It ran for a year on Broadway, went on 2 national tours in 1992 and 1993, and then went off the stage entirely until its revival in 2016. While March of the Falsettos and Falsettoland both got cast recordings, 1992's Falsettos did not, and the only cast recording of the show is by the 2016 revival cast. Since it's a sung-through musical you can get all the lines from the play just by listening to the album, without worrying about missing anything. Unfortunately, the 2016 cast only ran for one season, but they took a pro-shot (professional stage recording) of it that was uploaded to YouTube 2 years ago (no grainy iPhone bootlegs!! Yippee!!!). Falsettos (2016) was nominated for 5 Tonys, but somehow Stephanie J Block lost the Best Featured Actress award to someone in dear evan hansen (<- I am normal about that fact)
Bronze let’s go kill Even Hansen in real life

Today's compilation:
Rock Rolls On: Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Hits of the '50s 1984 Rock & Roll / Doo Wop / R&B
Two things you really gotta love about this double-LP release: first, the album art. I mean, who can resist this totally 80s aesthetic here, with all these bright, fluorescent colors placed onto a square-tiled background like this? Certainly not me. And second, you have to appreciate the whole budget nature that went into producing this thing too, because this really isn't your run-of-the-mill 50s oldies comp at all.
See, what this thing actually is, is a compilation that was put out by a label called Pair Records that happens to pull its selections from two other already existing compilations that were released in the 70s. You can't tell from the photo that was taken of the album art here, but if the photographer had zoomed out just a little bit more, they would've captured the disclaimer at the bottom of the front cover that says that all of the songs on the 2nd LP in this set are actually from a rockumentary soundtrack called Let the Good Times Roll, which featured a bunch of live recordings that were taken from two separate 1973 concerts during a rock & roll revival tour that included a whole bunch of 1950s and 60s staples on its billing. That soundtrack was put out on a label called Bell Records, which is owned by Arista.
And the only reason why I know all of this is because I bought this damn release myself and currently have it sitting right in front of me. I came across it on Discogs and saw some *very* strange track lengths—a Bo Diddley song with a runtime of over five minutes?!?—and decided to find out if they were correct. And it turns out that they certainly were.
However, what's not indicated at all on this release is where all of the tracks on the first LP come from. Now, these ones are all studio recordings, so whoever compiled this particular record could just say that they came up with all of these selections themselves; except for the fact that *all* of these songs also appear on another Bell comp from 1972 called You Must Remember These Volume I. So, given that the second LP is also comprised entirely of songs from a 70s Bell release, it would stand to reason that this first LP would be too, even though nothing on the release itself points to that fact.
But does any of this information actually matter, though? No, not really. Of course, at the end of the day, what really matters most is not so much the trivial provenance of these songs, but whether or not they themselves are actually good. And they are; they are *very good.*
The first LP serves up a bunch of spectacular doo wop tunes, leading with a stone-cold classic in Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs' "Stay," a 1960 chart-topper (hey, waitaseckin! Isn't this a 50s comp?! 🤔🤷‍♂️) that features some sudden and glorious falsetto on its chorus that comes courtesy of vocalist Henry Gaston. Then, following that one is a pretty immaculate remainder as well, but two especially sweet dollops are The Channels' "The Closer You Are," which never charted nationally(!), but was a big regional hit in 1956, and The Silhouettes' "Get a Job," which was another national chart-topper in '57. These two songs, to me, represent some of the absolute cream of the all-time vocal doo wop crop. Just powerful, totally electric songs, with vocalists who, together, make up a dynamic range, from low to mid to high. "The Closer You Are" sports both a weaving falsetto and an intermittent onomatopoeically bonging bassline, and "Get a Job" deploys some really catchy doo wop scatting, a fantastic sax solo, and a distinct, watery lead vocal from Bill Horton too. Terrific, deeply satisfying, and very lively doo wop fare in both of those unmissable tunes.
And speaking of lively, the second LP, which, again, only has live recordings on it, really brings it too. But the lone performer who stands out among the rest on this particular record is the one and only Little Richard. Two of his biggest hits in "Lucille" and "Good Golly Miss Molly" get lined up back-to-back here and they're both so irresistibly energetic. A pair of excellent performances that feature his signature "woo"s, as well as his passionate rasp and gravel. It's one thing to hear him do it in studio, but it's really a whole 'nother thing to hear it done live, with a very wanting, appreciative crowd and a full backing band to match all that both he and that crowd happen to give. Lots of infectious reciprocation going around in both of those songs that ends up generating a great and unforgettable atmosphere.
What's unfortunate for you, though, is that I can't actually find *any* of these live recordings on YouTube! 😧 I mean, go figure, right? A seemingly unassuming budget comp of 50s hits from the 80s actually has a bunch of tunes on it that can now be considered rare by today's standards? Funny how that works, eh?
So, yes, this is a cheap and completely unoriginal release of 50s songs that appears to pull all of its material from two other places. But more importantly, because of the music that's on it, it really still is a phenomenal double-LP set, and very surprisingly, it has a slew of tunes on it that you actually can't easily find these days. You'd think that all commercially released live recordings of such rock & roll luminaries as Bill Haley and His Comets, Little Richard, and Bo Diddley would be on YouTube already, but apparently not!
Feel free to message me if you're interested in hearing them, though!
Highlights:
Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs - "Stay" The Turbans - "When You Dance" The Nutmegs - "Story Untold" The Channels - "The Closer You Are" The Silhouettes - "Get a Job" Lee Allen & His Band - "Walkin' With Mr. Lee" The Five Satins - "In the Still of the Night" Bill Haley And His Comets - "Rock Around the Clock" Little Richard - "Lucille" Little Richard - "Good Golly Miss Molly" Bo Diddley - "Hey Hey Hey"

[ad_2] Sorgente ↣ :

2000 Stockholm - Number 16 - Knorkator - "Ick wer zun Schwein"
youtube
They're Germany's "most band in the world". BILD said "Who let these lunatics on TV?" At their concerts they like to encourage their audience to separate into two groups at either side of the arena and then run at full speed into each other. Welcome to the world of Knorkator.
Industrial metal has definitely not made an appearance at national finals to this point, especially not industrial metal with an absurdist, comedic edge. It's an indication of where NDR are going with their national final that this is being performed into a large, partisan and rowdy crowd, and broadcast to the German public. This is also the year that Stefan Raab won, and in second place was a song called "I Believe in God". Let's try everything and see what works.
Ick wer zun Schwein (I'm Turning into a Pig) is a hard, situationalist statement that results in a piano being destroyed on stage and national outrage in the tabloids. The heavily distorted guitar grinds, the drums pound. Lead singer Stumpen using screamed lines that only end in the letter 'n' outlines his transformation into a pig, also portrayed by some facial gurning. There's a bridge that moves from metal and into chamber music while Stumpen exercises his falsetto. Stumpen leaves stage squealing and oinking as a section of the enormous crowd boos.
And I like it a lot. This might have ended up in my 'Interesting songs' section, but it deserves its slot in my top 26. It might be the most divisive song I've included to this point, but it's far more than just a joke. It's bringing new musical genres to the table, it's bringing new groups of people into Eurovision, and it makes me feel alive.
This performance, in part thanks to the tabloids, brought Knorkator to a much wider audience in Germany. Previously they were a band known primarily in their native Berlin alone, after this their audiences grew. They're still producing music and touring although they did have a break in 2008. Their last album was released in 2022. There is a notable controversy in that they used a distinctly racist image for an album cover 2014 - even while making an anti-racist statement - and refused to change it. That doesn't seem to have dented their success.
Ick wer zun Schwein managed to finish fourth in a wildly diverse field of songs and, of course, this is the only time Knorkator tried to enter Eurovision.

Facts why Switzerland has Always been Rveryone's Favourite Destination:
Switzerland may seem little in contrast to other European nations, but that does not imply there are fewer attractions there. Instead, it has set itself apart from the rest of Europe with its fantastic landscape, tranquil settings, and cosmopolitan towns. It has successfully become a tourist hotspot while being only mildly over-commercialized. Discover more tours in Switzerland, a place you must glimpse at least once in your lifetime. The spectacular mountain views, the heart-pounding activities, and the delectable cuisine must all be experienced at least once. So here are a few Facts about why Switzerland has always been everyone’s favourite destination:
Tumblr media
Amazing cuisine:
The cuisine of Switzerland will astonish you with its excellent ingredients and gorgeous plate presentation, in addition to cheese and milk chocolate, both of which the nation is renowned for producing. The cuisine may be described as the result of canton’s French, Italian, and Germanic meals with a unique twist, which is most frequently obtained by adding homemade spices, naturally aged products, and a regular contrast between sweetness and light bitterness that adds to the exquisite flavours. If you are interested in the culinary arts or want to try out different cuisines, Switzerland has everything from casual cafes to Fine dining restaurants.
The fantasy of photographers:
The mountains, the crystal-clear canals, and the lush plains are only a tiny part of what makes Switzerland one of the gorgeous countries in all of Europe. The combination of all of these factors results in the unparalleled beauty of Switzerland’s landscapes. While participating in exploration activities there, The one of Switzerland's most magnificent sights, might help you find or rediscover your love of photography.
Best Swiss art galleries:
Since it offers a window into the past and a method to understand the lives and civilizations of the past, art is respected and conserved in Switzerland with the utmost care. Even though Switzerland does not produce much of its art, it makes up for this by having a variety of museums with collections of works of art from all over Europe, each of which emphasizes a particular era, whether it be contemporary, modern, or abstract. Numerous works of Swiss art, including poetry, wood carvings, embroidery, and music that frequently alternates between high falsetto and low chest notes, are influenced by art.
Self-proclaimed country of cheese:
The cheeses from Switzerland are by far the best-known in terms of diversity, quality, and production. The Swiss dairy industry is one of the most environmentally friendly types of agricultural production, has a considerable impact on the country’s economic growth. The local government depends on the businesses to maintain and improve cheese production levels, which generates jobs and secures income for various occupational groups. It is projected that the companies will generate 189,000 tons of cheese annually. Additionally, there are 475 different varieties of cheese. The flavours of Swiss cuisine will surprise you even though they are delicious on their own. The most well-known is fondue, a cheese sauce into which you can dip bread, meats, and even fruits. In a meal called raclette, cheese is melted, and then pieces are scraped off to be added to other cuisines or even eaten on their own because it is so delicious.
A country with a variety of cultures:
Switzerland is comparable to a nation with various regions, each with a distinctive culture. Each canton has its traditions, customs, and even accents, making the country exciting to visit and never getting boring. Due to the numerous historical associations ingrained in each canton, Switzerland is culturally fragmented, resulting in certain places being wholly separate from others. You should always have a translator on hand since you never know who you could run into. The differences can be distinguished in minute elements like street layouts, sign types, and more.
A train ride like no other else:
Switzerland has many beautiful open-air attractions, so you will likely have little time to see them on your first trip there. But, is it? Switzerland has a top-notch public transportation system that includes cable cars and trains that pass through some of the country’s most beautiful regions yet are unreachable by foot. So, to experience nature from a unique viewpoint, take a lovely train journey between two mountains. Seize the opportunity to practise your smartphone photography skills or to learn more about photography. Planning a rail trip across the country will not only be a fantastic adventure but one where you will always be on schedule. Like Swiss watches, all trains are exact in timing and arrive right on schedule.
Final Thoughts:
At least one time in a lifetime, visit Swiss historical places when you travel to Switzerland. The selection of the city to visit is the next step in planning a trip to Switzerland. Therefore, start looking for the town that will highlight the feature of the nation that most interests you.

Thank you, Toursettos— here’s to an amazing run and happy trails to whatever theatre/film/tv project you next take on. 💖🌈♟
Seems so fitting that the tour ended on the last day of Pride.
