They were being watched, after all. Angelica was a mutant; Johnny was married to one, was uncle to one. There were mutants already working for Orchis, to Johnny’s horror, like their head of propaganda, a man aptly named Judas who oversaw all of Johnny’s videos; but these mutants had already proved themselves to Orchis. Not like Angelica and Johnny. Stasis vouched for them, but they didn’t have the same freedom of all the other members, and had to prove themselves repeatedly.

Akihiro was doing his best to avoid thinking about Laura, about the emptiness in her eyes, about the coldness. He was doing his best to avoid thinking about Johnny at the moment, but he was failing spectacularly. He was doing his best to avoid thinking about his little sisters and his cousins and his nephew, Zach who had been so excited to drag his family to finally meet Akihiro. It had taken time for Zach’s family to reconcile what they knew of their family history with the abridged version Akihiro gave them, taking pains to paint Natsumi in a slightly more positive light, but they had come to the wedding in the end. Zach apparently had insisted. His grandmother, Akihide’s widow, had hit it off with Akihiro’s mother.

It was the children who saw Johnny first, and they pointed, and Akihiro had some time to brace himself before grappling with an armful of his laughing partner, as Johnny vanished the flames and held him tightly, eyes bright. He looked deliriously glad to see Akihiro again, and he smiled and told everyone around them that the threat was gone, but he was trembling slightly.

That was the thought that seemed to be in everyone’s mind as their sorry group of survivors, the meager mutant resistance, watched Orchis’ press conference from Kingpin’s phone. Maybe they weren’t thinking about that specific instance, but they were thinking about all the times they had shared a laugh or a battle with the Human Torch. The fury and contempt contorted their faces when Firestar talked, too, but Firestar had always been a bit of a stranger for them, as she spent most of her superhero life with the Avengers and only recently had she returned to her mutant roots.

They had an easy enough dynamic in text, but it didn’t fully translate in person, perhaps simply because she regretted begging so unashamedly for help at a time of crisis for his family. Akihiro had always seen her as very proper, a martial and composed leader, building on discipline and self-restraint. One had to be, to survive in an environment like that of the Hand, to excel in it and become an elite assassin. He knew how hard she had driven herself, because he had done the same. And he could glimpse the trauma underneath the facade, beyond what he already knew of her daughter’s death. On an island where almost everyone was severely traumatized, they were kindred spirits.
