i havent drawn anything serious in a while bc of hand pain and i realized that i posted this only on twitter. so have (half) of a fantasy au cast sketch.

its a thing me and my partner have been picking at off and on, and the classes (JRPG-themed) from left to right:

emmet - brawler/summoner (runaway prince)

piers - witch (descendant of the original slayer of the Worm)

volo - summoner/rogue (<- cursed by giratina)

raihan - knight (childhood friend to ingo, emmet, and piers)

leon - hero (the protagonist) (chosen one)

ingo - ranger (<- cursed to share a body with a dragon/the current Worm) (also a runaway prince)

The Voloverse

Posting this mainly so I can link back to it as a footnote whenever I post mr. Man anywhere. Basically in my headcanons and aus Cynthia is an eggy egg who posts a lot of dysphoric cringe in the form of hurting people: she's so disconnected from herself and her body and her life that she can't quite comprehend why people care about anything at all, which leaves her just bulldozing over a lot of feelings because it doesn't seem like a big deal to her.

She lovebombs people then freaks out about it and goes completely ghost, youtube pranks Steven Stone by leaning into the gossip and telling the presses she's pregnant with his spawn despite him telling her It's Not Funny Fucking Stop, etc. etc. That sorta thing.

Eventually she cracks the code, he/hims into a MAN, and remains a bit weird and mentally ill but goes from being very shielded behind masks and facades into being turbo-earnest and sincere.

When PLA dropped with a canon Manthia in the form of Volo I went "Dang this kinda awkward" and made it even more awkward by leaning into it. Cynthia figures out she needs to detit become man due to a portrait of Volo she comes across while doing some ancestry research, lowkey steals his entire identity, and picks the name Cievolo for himself :) (Cielo + Volo)

So whenever I mention Cievolo it's a transsexualized genderbendered Cynthia because I have plots schemes and agendas.

Then in what I like to call the EXPANDED VOLOVERSE within fantasy aus (DND, MH, Miitopia, u get it) things get even MORE awkward because then Volo and Cievolo grew up together. Volo is his uncle, younger brother of Cogita, who is Cievolo's maman. They were pretty tight-knit and Volo was practically the only person who supported Eggthia's dreams of bailing out from the small town they were stuck in and pursue grander ventures. Then he died :( so sad :( that he totally definitely absolutely died due to highway robbery and didn't just orchestrate an attack on his jolly merchant band so he could fake his own death and go underground to start hunting for forbidden arcane secrets to destroy the world with so it'd be as empty as he is inside :(

So in those timelines Cievolo picked his name as an active tribute to his DEFINITELY DEAD uncle, the one who always believed in him... and regrets everything whenever Volo inevitably turns out to be alive because oh god. That's so cringe and embarrassing and confusing. What the fcuck. At least in DND-verse he can lie through his teeth and just say he reaaaally enjoys Volothamp's memoirs about monsters. Yup yup. Volo's Guide To Monsters just his favorite book, really.

Cievolo and Steven are also besties. Strained besties with a vast history of C causing Steve a lot of stress. Like a lot. But besties none the less.

Okay so. I've been watching the notes on the @pokemischaracterization polls and oh my goodness this is fascinating. A brief summary of trends I've noticed this far:

-ingo and emmet are both in the bracket, but many people say that their characterization is largely fanon and difficult to get wrong. I'm going to argue that you can get it wrong, actually. Because of the ableism. If you write Ingo as someone who likely has an anxiety disorder that masks itself behind his autism symptoms, that's a perfectly reasonable interpretation. If you write him as being a secret zoroark who ate babies and is in a yandere situationship, you may want to re-examine some things.

-nemona, rose, and raihan are all victims of fandom racism. nemona made it to the yandere fandom wiki, and raihan gets similar treatment with people calling him "feral". Chairman Rose is in a much more ambiguous position, as he did in fact do several things wrong! But that just makes it trickier to spot the biases.

-Silver and Lusamine both get the "mischaracterized by their own source material" lament. I haven't gathered enough data on Silver, but Lusamine has canon trying to claim she did nothing wrong in later installments and interpretations, while retaining many of her abusive behaviors in USUM. While pokemon is a multimedia franchise and characterization may vary between adaptations, it does come off like they're trying to walk back on their themes earlier about child abuse.

-Lusamine and Cynthia both seem to get their characterization erased in favor of making them. Hm. Can't say that unless I want to mark the post 18+, but in particular, a lot of fanartists draw them in a way that appeals to a very particular crowd. Lusamine's toxicity is swept under the rug, and Cynthia's kindness and genuine love for the world and her history is dismissed as being unfitting for the particular fantasy that these people want to fulfill.

-Autism coding is something that comes up a LOT. Ingo, Emmet, and N are all a victim of zoroark AUs, a fresh spin on the changeling story that rehashes the same harmful tropes as the original without doing any introspection. In particular, N is infantilized and his character arc of understanding that he has a human heart is erased. which is suspicious because this mischaracterization is a mirror image of ghetsis' abuse. Nemona is viewed by some people as being autistic, hence her overly enthusiastic nature and inability to pick up on social cues. And she's criticized for these same traits.

-Special mention to magma admin Courtney! We're not sure if she's autistic or something else, but she's compared to a robot rather than a zoroark. Diversity loss! Ableism finds a way!

-Cyrus and Volo are character foils, who both wanted to remake the world but have friendship evolutions to show how they're not uncaring or heartless. Fandom seems to be allergic to nuance on them, with Yandere Volo headcanons especially. Volo seems to have it a lot worse, though.

-Red and Blue are somehow mischaracterized? Maybe I'm just not in the right corners of the fandom, but they seemed pretty straightforward to me. Hell, I'm a pretty big fan of Blue's characterization in pokemas, where he's presented as a cocky mentor sort who's largely mellowed out over the years and takes a lot of the newer rival characters under his wing.

-Kamado gets turned into a hate sink. My theory on this is that it's about the way the information about him is presented; he's wary of you to begin with and the banishment comes off as irrational, and then the banishment happens. By the time you learn enough about him to make him feel sympathetic, you're being attacked by a ninja who is likely trying to kill you, and then you have other things to worry about. More information about his backstory is hidden in subtext and minor quest dialogue that you could easily miss.

Anyways! This is just me liking to analyze data and trends. If you have information you'd like to add, feel free!

Lol so the latest in my Magical Girl inspired BG3 sequel campaign I've been running: the current spirit the party has to put to rest has cordoned off her own little delusion in the feywild where she can live out her boarding school au fantasy with her crush she regretted never asking out, so the party has found themselves trapped in an Utena/Madoka/Sailor Moon/ Doki Doki Literature Club inspired academy setting.

#guardian of ideals: arceus’ champion was sent to stop volo at any cost. ingo, zekrom’s champion and divinely-ordained guardian of ideals, was sent to save him.

#zero constructs: the area zero professor decides to use their time machine to recover Champion Dawn and Subway Boss Ingo from their place adrift in time. unbeknownst to them, and unfortunately for dawn and ingo’s loved ones, they do not have a time machine, they have a wish-granting machine, and it does NOT know how to put a dawn and ingo together

#magearna twins: “hey the shinies for regular/oc magearna look sort of familiar”

#platinum clan: spawned off of living history- the clan leaders and wardens never figure out how to get back to their original time and ingo becomes the de facto leader of both clans, eventually unifying them into one

#tringo: SUB-subclass of platinum clan. ingo goes to unova and gets turned into the three legendary dragons

#giratina champion ingo: much like the protagonist is arceus’s champion, ingo is giratina’s, unknowingly serving volo and giratina’s will

#emissary au: spawned off of giratina champion/living history—after the leaders vanish, ingo is approached by a shadowy entity that claims to be almighty sinnoh, and which makes it his priest. giratina Is Not Evil, and is in fact trying to protect reality from a greater threat... not that the rest of the world believes that

#modern hisui: rei and akari, totally non-suspicious teen twins, wind up in a small town full of cryptid stories

#nobel lady sneasler: this one is fully a stupid joke that got out of hand. pseudo-1920s-au, pokemon all have recognized sapience, and the clans are two rival groups of scientists with their own pet theories, trying to prove themselves right in time for an upcoming award. get it. nobels

CROSSOVER STUFF:

#arc vessel: hollow knight au. ingo is the ghost and emmet is the hollow knight

#pokesouls: grab bag. some of it’s elden ring, some of it’s ds1, some of it’s ds2, some of it’s bloodborne. we are just vibing

#msaxpla: pla/mystery skulls animated crossover. unlike 99% of my crossovers this is a “the characters exist in the same universe” crossover bc we are hyperfixation multi track drifting. vivi is the protagonist, lewis died in hisui and became a zoroark, and arthur’s a depot agent doing really inadvisable things to one of the train engines (it’s fine emmet okayed it)

#subnautica au: ingo crashes on the degasi. several years later, emmet chases his voice recordings across the crater, hoping to catch up to him (and find him alive when he does) (they both end up fine dw)

#pla dhau: submas/pla dishonored au. no listen listen. ingo and emmet were twin princes, but one family assassination attempt and several years later, ingo’s an assassin-turned-vigilante with no memories and emmet’s smiling in the lord regent’s face while turning the palace against him behind his back.

#pla rf4: rune factory 4 au. the wardens etherlink with their nobles to sustain both adaman and irida. if you know what that means congrats and also come yell with me about it

#poke slayer: demon slayer au that is, i will be honest, mostly about torturing former darkness hashira ingo

#the legends zone: taz balance au. an ipre consisting of ingo, emmet, elesa, prof. rowan, laventon, cyllene and one stowaway. emmet and elesa are liches, emmet gets stuck in a whistle, rowan voidfishes everyone and becomes kamado and founds the galaxy team to fix their mistake with the light of creation (arceus) and the nobles.

i don’t post much msa anymore and most of this is not particularly Up To Standard but i GUESS i’ll compile those tags too

#vampires au: everyone in the gang is a "vampire” but they’re all following different cherrypicked rules about it

alternate take on legends protagonist, started as a self insert but I want to make them their own thing:

-Unhinged!! They don’t want to destroy the world per say, but becoming god? Harnessing the power of creation? Jokes on you they’re into that shit! You see the rift incident wasn’t a total accident on their part. Sure, they stumbled into it. But one does not simply spend their time creeping around spear pillar if they’re not looking for rifts to stumble into. Much like Volo they’ve been tailing arceus and the creation trio for years. Heard reports of strange activity, went to investigate. Oops I fell into the rift whatever shall I do~?

-Aside from Kamado’s general suspicions the village folk never truly question their intense fascination with pokemon, especially of the legendary variety. So easily impressed by their skill and quick to fall into praising their dedication to research and the Galaxy Team’s cause. They’re 100% a closet mad scientist, but it’s so cute how the professor and that sweet survey corp kid call them a hero! They don’t have the heart to ruin the fun! And of course free (not really) lodging is also a plus.

-Let’s 👏🏻 Get 👏🏻 Meta 👏🏻 !! I don’t wanna get into territory that implies a real ass person is interacting with what (to them) are literal game characters. Cause there’s a ship here and despite uhh everything I’m not that far gone. plz understand this. but plz also understand my whole point is to go wild with reality bending shenanigans. Case in point: This person is the only one who can read unown. Volo wasted hours of his life staring at inscriptions in ruins taking notes, cross referencing every language in recorded history getting absolutely nowhere. Because unown are english letters. The pokemon world has its own letters, they don’t look like unown.

-Occasionally slip in their vocab. People brush it off as them being from the future. In the thing I just wrote they go “at sp- The temple.” Ah shit it’s not called spear pillar yet. Which for the purpose of this AU is a very real alternate reality. Look the fourth wall and I have a history ok... -The way they talk like a modern person in my time loop shitpost/ficlet is gonna be on purpose too. It’d sound pretty weird to talk like that in meiji period japan I think, and this character would know that. They’d edit their voice and dial it back a lot around... basically everyone. Except Volo. They get fellow mad scientist vibes from Volo and drop their guard for him quite noticeably. Especially after the time he accused the rift of spitting them out to get in his way and looked straight up, where their homeworld beyond the sky would be. If I were there now... he might’ve looked right into my eyes. They see him and think: He knows I don’t belong here, and that he doesn’t belong either. We’re the same! -Zero self preservation. There are words they recognize, but the sentence structure is all wrong and the context the words are used in doesn’t make sense. It’s like a foreign language. A language within a language. coding class is kicking my ass And then they wake up. Back at base camp like nothing ever happened. It seems you were rescued. By what? Arceus? Maybe. But somehow... it doesn’t feel like arceus. Arceus has plans. Stories with predetermined endings. Plans that have no room for mine, they never did. No love for those who dare mess with the code of its perfect world. But the code itself? It holds no attachments. It cares not for wrong or right, fate, outcomes. It faces us only with openness. Acceptance. Arceus only cares for us when we play by its rules. Why strive for its approval when the eyes see us void of judgment ha gettit . Tell me Volo, if we could speak to them in a way they’d understand would they care whether or not we bear the name “almighty Sinnoh?” The eyes are pure possibility. Pokemon Legends arceus+Rune Factory Au ideas

The Pokemon actually follow you and protect you when wild Pokemon jump out to fight( you have no idea how disappointed I was when I found out Pokemon couldn't follow you)

I love the idea that your Pokemon go and help you Garden that's like Rune Factory mechanics right there. Like certain Pokemon have special skills in doing certain things so instead of tools you just have your full team of six (Ex: your garden. Might be really good at chopping wood and protecting you from wild Pokemon, but the Garchomp would'nt do well with Farming so he's a lot slower in his farming tasks than the other ones.)

Volo would be dateable but certain parts of his personality would change relevant to the story ( since he's a very important character I feel like most of his romance progress will be locked behind a certain threshold)

At first Volo would be very sweet and loving and flirting but then after revealing himself and you beating him he would become very cold and short with you until you get his last heart event

Tells you that his feelings for for you and the beginning has never changed and he's quite greedy so he still wants you but he understands that to get his goal he has to surpass you... then he make a joke "keep your enemies and friends close but your Rivals closer... I love you"

After that heart event he becomes flirting again but he's no longer hiding bits of his 'darker' personality.
