Over a decade ago I made this goofy little wuxing of plot devices according to something I'd seen someone mock up but with a few changes to the arrangement and terminology on my part. It's not a perfect analogy but I still loosely reference it some times when mapping out ttrpg events.
"Magic" here being actions/effects that operate outside of established logic, rather than literal magic in the fantasy world building sense
Mystery being the unknown and unexplained
Puzzles being the application of logic and cause&effect
"Science" here being more about repeatable methodology rather than strict academic STEM subjects
Discovery being the introduction of new facts or logics to the story.
And these elements empower on another in the according cycle. Unexplained resolution presents questions to be answered, creates room for logic to be applied, creates repeatable methods of problem solving, introduce new realities of the plot/world building.
But like all iterations of the 5-steps, skipping steps present breakdowns in the system.
The deus ex machina functionality of "magic" ruins logical puzzle solving
A fixation on logic puzzles inhibits the discovery process
"Discovery," as in the exposition of hard fact(implicitly without process), spoils the mystique of the unknown
Maintaining the appeal of mystery obstructs the the application of "Science"
And the reliability of Science demystifies the rulebreaking practicality of Magic
In practice it means any time I'm charting events in a campaign I can always look to these steps to see where I am and what sort of development might be useful to move towards and what might be pertinent to avoid.
It helps avoid letting players put effort into what becomes a one time solution by turning solutions into methodologies. Helps avoiding exposition dumps at a time where they distract from more active player interactions by leading players into solving a problem to naturally lead to info dumps about their actions. Helps create windows for GM intervention that don't feel like wrestling control from the players by calling back to familiar and reliable logic already present in the campaign. Etc...
