Working on my own Soulsborne setting I've been able to jot down a number of tropes and archetypes that are repeated throughout the games.

Parents: Extremely alive. His father is named Bernon, and he was a pikeman in the Ishgardian military until he and his wife deserted left, and he is currently a maverick Wood Wailer who should probably hand in his badge. His mother is named Gwenolie, she was a chirugeon in Ishgard, which is how she met Bernon in the first place. She retired completely upon reaching Gridania ... as far as Gridania knows, at least.

Siblings: His twin sister, Orianne. Her nickname, of course, is Dawn. She's a botanist most of the time, unless she feels like the Scions are not doing a good enough job keeping an eye on her brother. Then she's a lancer who recently picked up reaper, since it's hard to feel like you're pulling your weight when your brother and his boyfriend bro are both extra special dragoons, you know?

Grandparents: ALSO VERY ALIVE, although they're all getting on in years. Gwenolie's parents are Lionnet and Aurelle Tirauland. Lionnet is a (mostly) retired chocobo trainer, Aurelle is a retired knight. Bernon's parents are Ciceroix and Iliette Lanverlais. Ciceroix was also a pikeman in the military (now retired) and Iliette is a retired archer.

In-laws and Other: It's kinda funny this asks for in-laws but not ... partners? Farron is Dusk's almost-husband, which makes Farron's semi-adopted dad, Bjalla, Dusk's almost-father-in-law. Farron also has two kids, twins, named Sverre and Kara, who seem keen to adopt Dusk. The twins live on the First. It's a whole thing. And Estinien is ... <waves hand vaguely>.

Pets: Dusk and Farron are currently raising two amaro babies, which probably count. Their names are Eo Lad and Sul Lad, and they're adorable. There's also Duck, of course, but he's not a pet.

⭐️ Reasoning for her chosen name is funny when you consider she chose it as a teenager. Cringe queen.

✅ Combos well with her last name. Lightning Thunder. Also kind of funny.

✅ Can be shortened to Light as a nickname, thankfully.

✅ Thankfully was not named this by her parents… sort of.

❌ Too many letters. Makes misspelling it easy in tags.

⭐️ Four letter name. Short and easy to spell.

⭐️ Single syllable.

⭐️ It is soft, like him. When frozen, it is hard like his abs. Very clear symbolism.

✅ Kind of silly name for a silly man. Honestly, would not want it to be changed.

❌ This is a name you’d give your pet, not your child.

❌ Very un-intimidating. Imagine meeting the Patron and his name is… Snow. And he’s 6’ 7” and depressed.

❌ Last name is hard to spell. I’ve misspelled it four times and it embarrassed me. I’m making him change his last name to Farron when he marries Serah.

Total score: Whoever named you just looked outside the window when it was snowing, didn’t they?

✅ Hope becoming the symbol of hope is cool I guess, but comes off as a little heavy handed.

❌ Honestly, kind of confusing when characters say ‘hope’ with the lowercase ‘h.’

Total score: Nora named him and thank god for that. Bartholospew would’ve named him something pretentious and hard to spell, I bet.

⭐️ Fun to say and pretty spelling.

⭐️ Two syllable.

⭐️ You can make lesbean puns—‘cause get it? Vanilla is a bean? And Vanille is an alt spelling of Vanilla? And Vanille is a lesbian? And—

✅ Despite being 7 letters, it gets a pass. I’ve never misspelled it.

❌ The idea that someone would name their child Vanilla… Again, that is what you’d name an animal, not a person.

Total score: ‘Vanilla Lesbean’ deserves to take off. It’s a good pun, I swear.

⭐️ Doesn’t seem to be a real name, but I feel like it works really well.

⭐️ Feels amazing to say.

⭐️ Four letter.

⭐️ Single syllable.

⭐️ Incorporates the very rare letter ‘z.’ Very memorable to me, as a result.

✅ Rhymes with jazz. I like to think Dajh’s is taken from ‘adagio’ — to keep with the musical theme. Just wish they’d take the music theming further. Like, is his hobby playing the sax? Is his favorite genre jazz? Give me more on this man!!!

❌ I created an annoying coworker who says “Why so sassy, Sazh-y?” to him way, way too much when he’s even a little snarky; which, of course, aggravates him.

❌ He’d be too easy to name-search online by nosy people and weirdos. Sometimes, having a unique name isn’t all that great…

Total score: Katzroy… Sazh is a cool cat… Oh my god. The cat imagery is everywhere.

⭐️ Single syllable.

⭐️ A cool name for a cool lady… Whoever named her got lucky she ended up becoming a hunter and not, like, a dentist (which would also be fitting, but in a bad way.)

❌ Another name you’d give to an animal. Or a wolf OC. A very cool wolf OC.

❌ Personally, I would not want to be named after a bone, especially a tooth.

✅ When you think about it, if not for the spelling, she’s kind of an oddball for having such a normal, common name.

❌ I’m actually kind of mad I can’t use this for my fankid SMH. Damn it, Lumina… could you have trolled Snow a little less.

I don't have an image to show it, but one of my favourite small moments in DS3 is with the two darkwraiths fighting the Ghru in Farron Keep.

They are clearly walking towards the boss arena, likely with the intention of killing the abyss watchers again. They can murder every single ghru defending it on the way there, but when they reach the door they just....stop. If you don't call their attention the darkwraiths will just stop moving and stare at the door.

It's probably just because they are only programmed to walk to that spot and kill everything in sight, and now they did that and have no other commands, but it's such an evocative thing.

Are they listening to the abyss watchers fighting, confused as to who is even in there right now?

Or better yet, are they scared? Are those two darkwraiths actually scared to go in? Are they aware that behind those doors is a band of legends, whose swords are built specifically to cut them deeper, and they have no idea how many are left?

It's such a simple thing that shows a real legacy for the abyss watchers. Two powerful knights of the dark, extremely aggressive and agile creatures, hesitating when faced with the prospect of fighting these warriors.

January Writing (+ a little Wednesday WIP)

Thanks to getting sick this month, I did not get as much done this month as I'd hoped, but all things considered, I'm not unhappy with what I did get. I did some work on Harsh Light early in the month, wrote various FFXIV snippets throughout, and as February approaches, I have been writing a bit of Dragon Age again! This is the first week I've been back to my writing routine in earnest, but I'm feeling very energized and ready to do more.

I had been tossing around the idea of working on A Hero Sleeps in Gwaren in February (I may not end up with anything ready to post for Femslash February, but I can at least work on some femslash!) and as January comes to an end I've found myself excited to get back into that fic, and to work on an established project in general, so I think that's what's happening.

Here's a little snippet from this week!

Context: While Teyrn Tabris and Briala were in Denerim getting married, her human vassals have attempted a coup, and Castle Gwaren is currently under seige. With the help of an already-organized elven resistance, our heroines must find a way back to the castle to take command and put down the coup.

The first hitch was that the wagon would be inspected upon entering the town. There was no way around this. Bribery was not an option; if the guards were humans in the service of the banns, there was a strong chance they would simply pocket the gold and turn the elves in anyway. The resistance had a handful of people on the inside—elven knights sworn to the nobles' service, hired by necessity, Talith had explained, as the population of Gwaren had shifted more and more toward elves. They were trusted, reluctantly, to wield the sword for their liege, but they would not be trusted to guard the gates during a coup against the elven ruler. Unless there were an unexpected change of guard rotation, perhaps due to sudden illness. Talith had visibly perked up, to Briala's amusement, at the mention of poisons. "What will you be using? Not deathroot, I assume." "Nay, too bitter, easily detected," Alys had replied, briskly taking down phials and jars from a high cabinet she had unlocked with a large steel key. No, not really. There is of course the funny factor, but for the most part there is no benefit.

Clueless people in Elden Ring differ from clueless people in dark souls 3 for example. For one, they use overpowered shit like moonveil because it wins the game for you. They use rot breath, they use bloodhounds fang. All of those are good in PvP. They also use Radahn's set, which is a good set of armour.

Back in dark souls 3 clueless people used the fallen knight's set, Irythyll Straight Sword and Farron Greatsword. These weapons aren't as good in PvP so people underestimated you until you smoked them.

In Elden Ring, a noob is easy to defeat but it's still a threat, and they get killed off quickly for that.
