Brazil has logged 137 flight incidents in 2024 alone
Tumblr media
The crash of an ATR-72 passenger plane in Vinhedo, southeastern Brazil, on Friday, which claimed the lives of all 58 passengers and four crew members, shocked the nation and garnered global headlines.
The investigation into Voepass Flight 2283, which plummeted 4,000 meters in just one minute before crashing, is expected to take at least 30 days as officials analyze data from the plane’s black boxes. On Sunday, crews began removing wreckage from the housing complex where the crash occurred.
Experts from France and Canada are taking part in the investigation, with the French Bureau of Enquiry and Analysis for Civil Aviation Safety sending agents due to the aircraft’s French origin, and Canadian authorities involved because the engines were manufactured in Canada.
These officials assisted in removing the engines, which will be stored at a São Paulo airport for further analysis.
This disaster marks Brazil’s worst aviation tragedy since 2009, when a flight from Rio de Janeiro to Paris crashed into the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 228 on board. So far in 2024, Brazil has recorded 137 flight incidents, according to the Aviation Safety Network; 26 of these were fatal, resulting in 110 deaths.

Today we take time out to remember the trasgic events of January 2nd 1971, when 66 supporters were killed and more than 200 injuries.on stairway 13 at Ibrox Stadium Glasgow.
There is still a commonly held myth that many in the home support had left the ground after Celtic had taken the lead and the ensuing disaster unfolded when fans tried to get back in after Rangers had levelled. This was proven to be completely untrue in the accident enquiry that followed, which showed that the victims had all been going in the one direction, out the ground - possibly home to their friends and families, when the crush began.
What was never conclusively established was the trigger although some reports at the time claimed that the crush began when a child who was being carried on his father’s shoulders fell, sparking a fatal chain reaction.
Every modern fan can relate to that moment. Everyone has stood in a crowd, trying to get in or out of a ground and feeling others push and squeeze behind you.
It is difficult, however, to imagine just how those fans would have felt that day when they realised that something was wrong, something was different. That people were trapped and that those angry shouts for space were turning into ones of panic and terror.
When the crowd eventually did disperse, police and ambulance services found bodies piled six feet high.
Soon, injured victims were being carried onto the pitch where medical staff and management from both Celtic and Rangers joined the desperate efforts to try and save them. The youngest victim that day in 1971 was nine-year-old Neil Pickup who had travelled up from Liverpool for the game.
Also listed below the statue to mark the fateful day at Ibrox are the names Peter Easton, Martin Paton, Mason Phillips, Brian Todd and Douglas Morrison, five boys aged between 13 and 15, all from the same village in Fife who never returned home.

Worst Books I Read in 2023
A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness - This is just adult Twilight that thinks that it's too good to be adult Twilight. It's tedious and unpleasant and drags you through countless pages before remembering that books are supposed to have plots. The main character has every super special awesome once in a generation witch power, but doesn't want or use them. She finds out she's a time traveler in a throw away line. Then the love interest will not have sex with the main character until they are married, which just feels weird. There is vampire yoga. At least Twilight had the decency to use Supermassive Black Hole over the vampire baseball.
Sherlock Holmes vs. Cthulhu: The Adventure of the Deadly Dimensions by Lois H. Gresh - All it had to do was be a pretty okay adventure and I would have been fine with it. Instead, it drags it's feet through every page and then it waterboards you with a fish cult orgy.
Fatal Enquiry by Will Thomas - If you ever wanted to read wish dot com Sherlock Holmes where Holmes is an unlikable asshole, Watson is genuinely a moron, and the mystery is solved off page, this book is for you.
Dark Star Rising by Bennett R. Coles - This book seeks to answer the question, "What if Treasure Planet was boring and had a really annoying love triangle?"
Monstrous Heart by Claire McKenna - This book has such a cool setting and there's so much interesting world building, and it's wasted on a bland romance. This book isn't even that bad, but I hate the wasted potential so much that it's on my worst list.

Elderly man dies in house fire on University of Limerick campus as gardaí launch investigation
File image. Gardaí are investigating a fatal house fire at a house, on the campus grounds of the University of Limerick. An elderly man, understood to have been an academic, died in the blaze. The fire broke out at a house at Kilmurry Village shortly before midnight and the man’s body remains at the scene pending further garda and pathology enquiries. Fire Service control received the alert at 11:41pm and dispatched four tender units including a high-rise platform, from Limerick City, and from Cappamore, in the county. Firefighters attached to the Limerick City and County Fire Service spent five hours at the scene, putting out the fire and damping down the scene before returning to their bases after 5am this morning. Gardaí remain at the scene and are investigating all of the circumstances in relation to what caused the fire. A Garda spokesman confirmed Gardaí were alerted “at approximately 11:45pm of a report of a fire at a residence in the Kilmurry Village area of Limerick city” and that “a male was subsequently located deceased in the residence”. “The body remains at the scene. The scene is currently preserved and a technical examination will be conducted today (Friday 21st June 2024),” the Garda spokesman said. “A post-mortem examination will be arranged and the results of this, along with the findings of the technical examination, will determine the course of the Garda investigation.” The University of Limerick has been asked for comment. The rising death toll on roads in low- and middle-income nations, particularly in emerging economies, has played a significant role in the increase in traffic fatalities worldwide. The probability of experiencing a road traffic injury is influenced by a number of societal factors in many middle-income nations, including drinking and driving, excessive speed, traffic flow, and urban and infrastructure development. The section enforcement segment is estimated to reach $1,151.8 million by 2031, at a significant CAGR of 13.3% during the forecast period.
The outbreak of the COVID-19 has significantly impacted the growth of the road safety market. Rise in demand for enforcement solution across various sectors has significantly propelled the demand for road safety market during the pandemic. However, the emergence of third wave of COVID-19 across U.S. and UK is anticipated to affect the growth of road safety market in 2022. Learning the Advantages of Using Social Selling Through Jason Squires Review
A plethora of businesses worldwide are bound by limited marketing strategies that fail to provide the desired results for most. Only 10% of all startups survive in the long run, which tells us a lot about the modern business world and its highly competitive environment.
Common Marketing Pitfalls to Avoid
Startups and mid-sized businesses can commit many mistakes when setting up their marketing campaigns that lead to failure. Some companies think it is better to make an in-house marketing department in the long run. However, they fail to calculate the expenses involved in hiring, onboarding, and replacing a marketing resource. Another fatal mistake that can put all your progress in jeopardy is targeting the wrong audience. Once a business targets the wrong audience, all its marketing efforts are bound to fail because of the increased bounce rate.
Apart from the aforementioned mistakes, startups starting from scratch also tend to copy the marketing strategy of competitors of industry leaders, presuming they would get similar types of results as well. In reality, what might work for one company can fail to be fruitful for others. Therefore, you’re better off by creating your own marketing strategy rather than using strategies that have already been overused.
Social Selling: An Impactful Marketing Strategy
Companies searching for marketing strategies that start giving them immediate results should surely try implementing social selling into their marketing methodologies. In this marketing approach, businesses focus on helping their target audience with any niche-related problems on various online platforms. This method yields better results than other marketing strategies because potential customers would prefer to make a purchase from businesses that provide valuable insights and educate users about a specific niche.

Removal of entangled ropes (e.g., mooring ropes), removal of entangled fishing nets or lines which are usually entangled in the propeller (tail-end-shaft) or the bow thruster which are removed by cutting. The entanglement of ropes in the tail-end-shaft is a common problem in the cases during ship-to-ship operations in bad weather condition. This problem, if not treated quickly may be fatal to the tail-end-shaft as the ropes can melt and go inside it.

Adam Watson, the Scottish biologist, ecologist and mountaineer was born on April 14th 1930 in Turriff, Aberdeenshire.
From an early age, Watson showed considerable academic prowess. He was Dux of Turriff Primary School and of Turriff Senior Secondary School in Latin, English, Higher Latin, English, French, Science, lower History and Mathematics.
His education continued at the University of Aberdeen in the 1950s, gaining a first class honours in zoology and also the department of natural history's MacGillivray Prize. He gained his PhD in 1956 for his thesis on the Annual Cycle of Rock Ptarmigan, and a second doctorate in 1967 for scientific papers on populations and behaviour of northern animals.
The scientist studied and wrote extensively about plants and animal life in the Cairngorms. RSPB Scotland described Dr Watson, who research included studies of various upland birds, as "arguably the most knowledgeable Scottish naturalist and ornithologist of the last century".
Dr Watson was a well-known figure in Scotland's climbing and hillwalking community. He climbed extensively in the Cairngorms and in Scotland's other mountain ranges. He also climbed and skied abroad, including in Norway, Lapland, Canada and Alaska.
A John Muir Trust Lifetime Achievement Award was among other honours given to Dr Watson. The man dubbed Mr Cairngorms also received the Fort William Mountain Festival's Scottish Award for Excellence in Mountain Culture.
Watson’s research centred on grouse, his magnum opus on the subject, co-written with Robert Moss called Grouse, was a runaway bestseller.
A dam, a natural communicator in speech or the written word also appeared extensively on TV and radio in Scotland, his first broadcast was back in 1948 – Dr Watson’s enthusiasm for the sciences was never less than infectious, and he described his work in simple terms without resorting either to jargon or dumbing down. What made him loved by editors was his ability to read standard situations from a different viewpoint.
Watson’s literary output from the age of 14 runs to an astonishing 475 items including 22 books, hundreds of scientific papers and reviews and 175 unpublished technical reports.
In 1971 he was called to represent the Crown as expert witness at the fatal accident enquiry following the Cairngorm disaster in which six schoolchildren died. His quiet evidence drew not only on law, but on science backed by practical experience of the very worst of mountain weather. He surprised the Forestry Commission when he successfully opposed a particular development not merely on the expected ecological argument, but by astute demolition of the business case.
Doctor Adam Watson died after a short illness on January 23rd 2019, aged 88.
There's a great article taken from his journal that you can read at the link here https://www.ibsc.org.uk/thirty-miles-on-ski-adam-watson-april-1951/#

What I Read in July and August
Jade City by Fonda Lee - 4.25/5.0 I'm hooked. The characters were complex and fascinating to follow. I genuinely enjoyed that there was so much gray morality and watching the world evolving around the characters and how they react to it is fascinating. And while I was devastated by the scene at the docks, the fall out and the way it impacted everything else was incredible, doubly so because it wasn't supposed to happen that way. Watching Hilo suddenly shoved into a role that he isn't suited to and Shae coming into a role that she is very suited to, but isn't ready for yet, and the mistakes they make in the process, was great. On top of this, the magic system is just so. so cool. I can't wait to read Jade War.
Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty - 4.75/5.0 I love this series so much and I don't know why I waited so long to read this book. I think I just didn't want it to end. Nahri is such an interesting and nuanced character and I really loved reading from her perspective. Her and Ali are so cute and I love them so much. Manizheh is an amazing antagonist. Like, the definition of, "cool motive, still genocide." Dara remains The Worst (derogatory), but he's awful in a way that's very believable. I still couldn't wait for his chapters to be over and I honestly would have liked to learn about what's going on in Daevabad from another perspective just so that I didn't have to read quite so much, "Oh woe is me. I put the leopards eating faces party in power and now they are eating faces I didn't think they'd eat." I think the book was paced very well, with sections that felt very fast and others that moved at an appropriately languid pace, and it did not feel eight hundred pages long. However, I think that the very end of a very long book is the absolute wrong time to bring in the animal sidekick and I wish the Peris came up more in the earlier books. Still, I love it so much.
The Kaiju Preservation Society by John Scalzi - 4.0/5.0 This book very earnestly just wants to be a good time and it is. It is a very good time. The characters are all likeable, if prone leaning on the fourth wall in a way that sometimes feels a little too marvel for my taste. The plot is not terribly deep, but it's not trying to be. And I can't find it in myself to fault the author for just wanting to write a fun book. The only thing I found myself really wanting more of was more thorough descriptions of the Kaiju. Like, even after spending so much time on page with her, I'm still not sure what Bella looks like and I think that was a missed opportunity.
Fatal Enquiry by Will Thomas - 0.5/5.0 This book is so thoroughly unenjoyable I don't think that I want to send it back to the book box whence it came. If you want an iteration of Holmes and Watson wherein Watson is genuinely stupid and Holmes is an unrepentant jackass, and a deeply stupid mystery that gets solved off page, this is for you. If not for the fact that A Discovery of Witches is so damn long, it would be the worst thing I've read this year.
Shadowblack by Sebastien de Castell - 3.5/5.0 This was a fun little adventure. I like how the main character uses the little magic he has in creative ways. I like that this is mostly self contained, but doesn't waste a lot of time reiterating the world building from the previous book.
Monsterous Heart by Claire McKenna - 2.25/5.0 This book has a fantastic setting with airships and lighthouses and kraken and plesiosaurs and blood magic and it's wasted on a bland romance. There's some really good, well written, atmospheric bits in this book and that just makes the rest of it infuriating in it's mediocrity.
Velocity Weapon by Megan E. O'Keefe - 3.75/5.0 This book is a blast. There was some kind of fun twist in every chapter and it kept me wanting to come back for more. The frequent plot developments that recontextualized the characters we thought we knew and understood, for the most part, felt natural and a part of a greater whole. The characters themselves were enjoyable and while I wasn't sold on the romance at first, it grew on me. I think the fast pace and frequent twists would have been a little frustrating if I hadn't been reading it in half hour increments on my lunch break, but as it was it was a really good time. I really hope I find more of the series at the used book store, but if I don't I'm considering putting an order in at Thrift Books.
Dark Star Rising by Bennet S. Coles - 2.0/5.0 This series has asked the question, "what if treasure planet was kind of boring?" I don't think it takes enough advantage of the sci-fi portion of the setting, which is disappointing because sci-fi sailing ships in space has a lot of potential. Instead, you could replace the names of the different planets with places on earth and it would change nothing. While the characters are serviceable, most of the minor ones blend together in a mush that made me have to go back and reread portions to remember who they were talking to. I could have done without the very quickly resolved love triangle subplot. Or the romance subplot altogether. Like, it's just too bland for me to even properly dislike it.
The Dark Griffin by K.J. Taylor - 2.5/5.0 On the one hand, this was a very generic fantasy read. On the other, you know that scene from Dragon Age Origins where the Warden is pestering Wynne about whether or not a story has griffins? That's pretty much me in every fantasy novel. The griffins are great. The main character doesn't have much, if any character. There are more than a few plot moments that feel like the author panicked trying to figure out how to get the characters from point A to point B. However, the ending was interesting enough that I find the next book in the series at the library or used book super store, I'd probably continue it.
