Varese, presentato il documentario Care Seekers, in cerca di cura Due eventi gemelli, a Varese e a Luino, per parlare del prendersi cura, di come le nostre comunità stanno cambiando e della necessità di gestire il cambiamento in un modo nuovo e sempre più integrato. Due serate per incontrarsi e confrontarsi, partendo da un'opera d'arte, per riflettere sulla realtà e su come affrontarla. CareSeekers - In cerca di cura è un documentario on the road alla ricerca della cura, presentato dalle cinque principali Fondazioni che sul territorio si occupano di anziani e famiglie. Appuntamento dunque per venerdì 2 febbraio 2024 alle 20.30 a Varese in Sala Montanari e sabato 3 febbraio alle ore 16.45 a Luino a Palazzo Verbania. "Un progetto che esplora il tema del prendersi cura con un linguaggio innovativo - spiega l'assessore ai Servizi sociali Roberto Molinari - per stimolare una riflessone sui tanti aspetti di questa realtà e le possibilità di gestione, incrociando i punti di vista di chi ha bisogno di cure con quelli di chi vi dedica la propria vita". Le proiezioni sono previste per venerdì 2 febbraio alle 20.30, a Varese, Sala Montanari, via dei Bersaglieri 1: l'organizzazione dell'evento è a cura delle Fondazioni Onlus Molina, Comi, Istituto Cavalier Menotti, Longhi Pianezza e Menotti Bassani, con il patrocinio del Comune di Varese e di Uneba Varese. Sabato 3 febbraio alle ore 16.45 l'appuntamento è invece a Luino, Palazzo Verbania, viale Dante Alighieri 5: l'organizzazione è a cura delle Fondazioni Onlus Comi, Istituto Cavalier Menotti, Longhi Pianezza, Menotti Bassani e Molina, con il patrocinio del Comune di Luino e di Uneba Varese. Dopo la proiezione in entrambi gli eventi è previsto un dibattito alla presenza della regista del documentario, Teresa Sala e degli operatori delle Fondazioni che organizzano gli eventi. CARE SEEKERS – IN CERCA DI CURA sinossi Vanni e Natalia sono due anziani che hanno fatto da caregiver alle loro madri e ora si interrogano sulla vecchiaia che avanza e su chi si prenderà cura di loro. Vasilica è una donna rumena di quarantacinque anni che fa la badante 24 su 24 a Miranda, signora ultranovantenne con demenza senile; è partita per l'Italia circa 15 anni fa, lasciando la sua vita e i figli ancora bambini, e adesso non sa più quale sia il suo posto nel mondo. Nella Casa di Riposo Villa Antonietta, la vita delle oss, quasi tutte ragazze giovani e straniere come Marienne, e quella delle residenti, signore delle Milano bene, si svolge tra faticose alzate e messe a letto, pappe e pannoloni, sorrisi e conflitti. In un piccolo paesino della Sardegna, Sandra e le sue amiche hanno deciso di provare a vivere insieme gli anni della vecchiaia in una forma comunitaria, col desiderio di trovare una strada di cura alternativa. Quattro storie, quattro racconti di cura che si incontrano in un surreale viaggio in macchina per la pianura padana. Ad ogni capitolo una delle protagoniste si aggiunge al variopinto gruppo alla ricerca di una risposta alla grande domanda che anima l'intero racconto: "quale cura ci (a)spetta?" Modena, la Tenda, debutta con musica live, poesia e gialli Alla Tenda di viale Monte Kosica febbraio debutta con la musica live di Lara Luppi e una serata che riunisce tantissimi musicisti in un omaggio a Gigi Bartolini, la presentazione di "Pluriball", giallo scritto da Gianfranco Mammi e la finale del torneo di poetry slam. Infine, la prima settimana del mese si chiude con un nuovo appuntamento con "Urban call" e la cultura hip hop. Il programma si apre giovedì 1 febbraio alle 21 con un nuovo concerto di Arts & Jam, rassegna di jazz e contaminazioni giunta alla dodicesima edizione e curata come sempre da associazione Muse e JazzOff Produzioni. Sul palco la cantante Lara Luppi presenta "Perspectives", accompagnata da Paolo Birro (pianoforte), Aldo Zunino (contrabbasso) e Adam Pache (batteria). Quindicesimo album della sua carriera, "Perspectives" raccoglie brani cari da sempre alla cantante modenese (D. Ellington, J.Van Heusen, R. Rodgers, C. Porter, I. Berlin) con qualche novità come il brano di Cedar Walton "When love is new", con testo originale, o la meravigliosa ballad scritta da Charles Mingus "Duke Ellington's sound of love". Doppio appuntamento con la lettura e la poesia venerdì 2 febbraio: si inizia alle 18 con l'incontro con lo scrittore Gianfranco Mammi che presenta il suo romanzo "Pluriball" intervistato da Federica Scaltriti: un romanzo giallo dai toni tutt'altro che gialli: ironico, iperbolico, mai scontato. L'apocalittica celebrazione del potere della scrittura.. L'appuntamento è a ingresso libero e fa parte della rassegna "Dialogo con l'autore" a cura dell'associazione culturale l'Asino che vola. Alle 21, spazio alla poesia performativa con la finale della nuova edizione del torneo di poetry slam a cura di Mutuo Soccorso Poetico. Il poetry slam è una gara di poesia performativa in cui i poeti si sfidano a colpi di versi, scritti di proprio pugno: nessuna musica o oggetto scena, solo voce, microfono e pubblico in sala. Dopo le tre tappe di semifinale che si sono susseguite in Tenda da novembre, sarà eletto il campione modenese di poetry slam. Weird: Anticipation and Minimalism

In this post, I’m looking at the animation principle of anticipation in the motion graphic short film Weird by Fausto Montanari.

In this post, I’m beginning my research into the 12 Principles of Animation, which are described in the book The Illusion of life by Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas. These were two of the animation masters at Disney during the Golden Age of animation (widely considered to be the 1930s and 40s), and part of Disney’s masterclass animators dubbed The Nine Old Men.

The purpose of these principles was to create the illusion of animated characters adhering to the basic laws of physics, but also explored more abstract concepts and ideas such as emotional and theatrical timing, and character appeal. In response to the Principles brief, I’m going to be looking more at each principle, and analysing a piece of animation that exemplifies that idea. To begin with, I’m going to look at the principle of anticipation. 

According to Thomas and Johnston, ‘an action occurs in three parts:  the preparation for the action, the action, and the end of the action.’ Anticipation is the preparation for the action: it’s the brace for impact, the squash before the jump and the pull back before the swing. Without it, actions can appear abrupt, robotic and unnatural. Interestingly, in order to indicate surprise, it may be useful to remove this principle; as is the case with Lilo and Stitch, who suddenly appears out of nowhere. The impact of the reveal comes from Stitch’s sudden appearance: if the audience had seen the character crouch down before the jump, it removes all sense of surprise and speed.

Despite this, anticipation is arguably one of the most important principles of animation. Legendary animators Frank Thomas and Ollie Thompson said anticipation was ‘broadcasting intent’, letting the audience know what is about to happen. It’s the stretch of an elastic band before it can spring forward: the charging of the motion. Anticipation makes the animated sequence more readable for the audience, it we want the animation to be believable, the movements need to be anticipated.

The principle of anticipation, aswell as the appeal of design minimalism, is clear in Fausto Montanari’s Weird (2018) an animated monologue about diversity. The film, created in After Effects, is a visual scream of a ‘strange’ girl who dreams to delete the concept of wierd. With a handful of dazzling motion graphic visualisations of a captivating monologue, the film has played an inspirational role in my own practical developments outside of this analysis.

Here, Montanari successfully uses a consistent minimalist design visual language accompanied by an ever-changing and shifting shape and line to create a real sense of motion throughout the film. The short’s minimalist aesthetic shows a keen understanding of graphic design principles alongside animation, and results in a clear, considered and visually engaging piece of motion graphics work. The film benefits from snappy transitions, a varied and muted colour palette and incredibly fluid, smooth movement. The addition of smoke lines, a growing geometric window and alternating background colour is inspiring to my own proposed Arrival sequence.

This sequence, in particular, demonstrates the principle of anticipation nicely. After we cut to a minimalist icon of a fruit bowl, we are treated to a smooth rotation animation, following a fairly clear arc. Arcs are another important principle of animation, and as I’m finding out, it’s rare for animators to produce a sequence simply showcasing one principle - a good animation should consider all of them at once, where possible. Before the bowl jumps up, the object swings the opposite direction, gaining enough momentum and speed to believably complete the action. Without the anticipation, it’s not as visually exciting or smooth, as this gif comparison shows.

It’s important to note, however, the sequence isn’t successful purely because of the animation. Montanari has exercised some real design restraint with this short sequence, stripping his subjects down to simple lines in an exercise of minimalism. A core principle of graphic design, minimalism is about stripping a design of it’s superfluous elements, colours, shapes and textures: bring things back to the basics, and look good doing it. This idea of graphical minimalism is something I’m considering for my own Arrival morphing animation, as Weird has played an inflectional role in the idea development of my piece.

A peer suggested I also animate a growing geometric window, as we both drew comparisons to an iconic piece of imagery from Arrival, the inside of the ship. It was whilst watching Weird, that I decided to use the same simple animation technique and give it my own personal spin.

Personally, what I find exciting about Weird is the fluid motion, snappy transitions and most importantly, the clear understanding of graphic design and appeal. Whilst I will be discussing the principle of appeal in a separate blog post, its hard to deny that each composition and frame of this short film has been designed to engage our eyes. The colours pop, lines move with an appealing fluidity and the sequence is simply…exciting.

Here, I’ve begun my research into the Basic Principles of Animation. On this blog, I will be exploring all of the principles in depth, looking at a chosen example and analysing each one. I’m interested to look at both motion graphics and character performance pieces, to analyse a variety of animated sequences.

Animation Principles Analysis #4 - Weird

The next film I have chosen to analyse for my principles analysis is this short film called ‘Weird’ created by Lobster Studio and directed by Fausto Montanari. It is about diversity and the way in which we see ourselves within society and how this can help or hinder us. I wanted to analyse this animation because I think it is another good example of morphing and changing in animation. I also really like the simplified style and reduced colour palette which I think works really well as a whole and hopefully, by analysing it in more detail I can understand more about how this works and be able to inspire my work.

1. Secondary Action - 0.31

In this scene, the use of secondary action is really important for enhancing the main action that the character is taking. As the character moves from the shower she is accompanied by many elastic shapes which morph around her and eventually become surrounding shapes of medicine pills. This use of the fluid lines and blob-like shapes gives the impression of water and steam which helps the viewer to understand that she is becoming cleansed of her old ideas about self-identity. 

2. Follow Through - 0.32

This part of the film directly follows the previous bit and is a good example of follow through. When the characters head becomes more clear it expands and appears to ‘bounce’ slightly before it settles and then moves onto the next scene. This is an effective use of follow-through because it shows her hair moving somewhat independently of the main mass of her head which helps with the believability of the animation. 

3. Anticipation - 0.54

This section where the character’s body morphs into shapes before becoming liquid in a glass is a good example of anticipation. This is because when the viewer sees the shapes gaining more liquid-like properties we begin to prepare ourselves for a kind of splash or wave that we know happens to liquids in real life. Therefore this is a good use of anticipation because even though the blobs are coloured at first, we already associate their properties with liquids and anticipate them behaving as such.   

4. Arcs - 1.04

In this part, the use of arcs is used to enhance a tipping motion. The use of the semi-circular shape lends itself well to the use of arcs and it helps to bring a feeling of reality to the shapes despite the facts that they have a very cartoony, line style. The sense of swinging that we get from the movement of the ‘bowl’ object helps to enhance the realism of the falling fruit and overall gives a good sense of rhythm and movement. 

5. Appeal - Whole Film

Overall I think that the appeal of this film is really good. The character, who I assume to be the narrator, is well designed and has a really good simple colour palette that is carried throughout the rest of the film. The animation style is simplistic but it conveys its points very well and is easy and clear for the viewer to understand. The use of the contrasting blues and corals is really nice and stops the colour palettes from feeing too blue-saturated at times. It is well thought out and a piece that I really enjoyed watching.
