areas of portraiture
♢ candid portraiture (my personal favourite)
this is where the subject is not aware that their photograph is being taken. it captures a person/people in a raw, natural form. it is without posing. i like this approach because it captures peoples genuine expressions and emotions. to me, taking a photo of someone who is deep in thought will produce a much more satisfying result than if the person was posed or aware. one of my favourite photographers is vivian maier and this was her approach to photography during the 1950s and 1960s. something i’ve noticed that is a common technique with candid portraiture is that the camera position is at the photographers hip line or waist. maybe because holding it lower is inconspicuous?

♢ creative portraiture
this style is has a lot more thought gone in to it. portraits of this nature have deep meanings behind them and are very planned. often they are personal to the subject or even the photographer, and somewhat confusing or puzzling to the viewer provoking a thought process with lots of questions. a lot of the time this style of portraiture is depicted as moody. the photographer of the image below has stated his meaning behind this creative portrait; “i am the canvas.”

♢ fine art portraiture
i quite like this style, too, because fine art is something i like learning about, researching, and admiring. to create a fine art portrait there is usually a dated background used, as well as some form of costumes and props. the subjects facial expression and pose is in a classic way to strengthen the old-timey feel. within the frame there are often inanimate objects and sometimes animals, (alive or dead), placed just so. the photographer i’ve chosen an example from has a clear knack for this style of portrait photography and she produces images of such beauty it’s hard to look away. a new favourite.

♢ lifestyle portraiture
this style is simply real life events captured more creatively. like a normal scene of life amped up a bit. similarly to candid portraits this style does remain candid and natural, whilst the artistic flare is incorporated. family portraits are a great example of lifestyle portraiture, often shot outside to convey an everyday family outing. a quote from federica about this style; “to be unnoticeable, you may actually need to participate and connect with the group. you have to be present and listen to what they’re saying. then, when you take photos, you’ll be like a friend or family member rather than a stranger swooping in for a shot.”

♢ environmental portraiture
this is where you capture subjects in their natural surroundings. its best to control the light on your subjects for this portraiture type. i chose matt brandon as an amenable for this type because his life is travelling around countries such as egypt, malaysia, phillipines, india, tibet, thailand, and maldives to take photographs of the native people of those lands in the environments. i think he's a perfect example of this type of portraiture.

Out on French Fries Magazine
EXTRA WET is an experiment done during the quarantine and I worked on it as soon as I could.
The idea was born from my desire to work on photographs experimenting with a more physical and tactile method.
So I observed how the images - printed on paper - changed according to the material contamination. The instant impression was that the image acquired a new aura, changing its essence.
When water flows on the paper without corrupting the image, gives it a sense of wetness that clashes with the material component of the paper.
That’s why, me and my stylist RitaMaria, decided to create images related to the sense of wetness, and to exaggerate this feeling through post production. Wet clothes, wet photographs and wet scanner.
The result is a project that experiments photography beyond the limit of digital.
