Could you recommend any German shows that aren't about war or crime? More like sitcoms or comedies?
(German-learning anon, is that you?)
“German shows that aren’t about crime” HAHAHA good one. JK, we do have other stuff.
My favorite German sitcom would be Türkisch für Anfänger (Turkish for Beginners) which is a show from the 2000s about two families (one German, one Turkish) who move in together. Cultures clash, cliches are handled in a very funny way (like the Turkish dad is a stereotypical German at heart) and the characters are lovable (except for Axel, everyone hates him and you’ll celebrate once he’s gone). It has three seasons and a movie that was shot after the show ended and retells the story and is basically a Plane Crash AU. It has comedy, drama, good writing, good acting and one of Germany’s most popular actors (in young). Smart, very funny and highly recommendable.
If you like The Office, we do have a German version of that. It’s called Stromberg, has Christoph Maria Herbst in the lead (he’s great!) and has five seasons and a movie. I’ve only seen a few episodes but I could tell it was good. (Unlike Michael from the US version, Stromberg actually is an asshole who doesn’t just not see how his jokes are inappropriate, he actually means them. He’s a version of the character you love to hate.)
We also have a version of Grey’s Anatomy called Doctor’s Diary. It only has three seasons, though, and I haven’t seen it but people seemed to like it. But if I know German TV, I also know this show doesn’t have the same kind of drama as GA, meaning that instead of plane crashes and bombs, you have relationship drama and maybe a stolen file or corrupt doctor, I don’t know, I haven’t seen it.
(Update: I have seen it now. I didn't know it was made by the same people that made Türkisch für Anfänger. And it's hilarious and heartfelt and even though it's a lot of romance drama that deals with some clichés, it absolutely knows this at the same time. And the characters are lovable, too, even the mean nurse - because character development.)
If you like sketch shows, we have those, too. Two of the most popular ones are actually produced by and starring women, like Ladykracher with Anke Engelke and Knallerfrauen with Martina Hill (fun fact: she voices Valka in the German HTTYD dub).
Now I know you said no crime shows, but there’s one German comedy that I have to mention that happens to be about two Bavarian cops solving crimes. It’s called Hubert & Staller and it has a specific sense of humor - German, dry, a little satire here and there. The cops Hubert (whose actor, Christian Tramitz, is very well known) and Staller work in a small town in Bavaria (with a comical lot of murders, if you think about it), with no high stakes or drama or big action. They’re just going through their day, solving some puzzles, doing the bare minimum to get by. Then you have the grumpy boss, the colleague who basically serves as the intern, the nosy, smart reporter, the pathologist who one of the cops has an ongoing feud with because they were once married, the kebab stand in the middle of nowhere, the Bavarian pub... I usually watch an episode when I’m eating lunch or when I want to relax and laugh a little. You might want to turn on subs if you’re still learning German, because they do have a bit of a Bavarian dialect.
Out of these, I definitely love and recommend the first one and also the last (if the humor is for you). If you watch them, tell me what you think! :D (Most of these are on Netflix, at least in Germany. Don’t know about other places.)

EFF vs filternet
Tumblr media
In Mar 2019, the EU approved the new Copyright Directive by an absurdly slim margin (it passed by 5 votes and later 10 MEPs said they got confused and pressed the wrong button; due to procedural rules, despite an amended total showing a majority AGAINST, it still passed). Specifically, the part that passed through this bureaucratic, incoherent nonsense was Article 13 (now confusingly called Article 17), which imposed a duty on online platforms to stop their users from infringing copyright. This proposal has a bizarre history (everything about this is bizarre). It started as a mandate for copyright filters (like Youtube's ContentID, which cost $100m and counting). Then Axel Voss, the MEP in charge of it, said it absolutely was NOT a proposal to mandate filters. Then Voss admitted that there was probably no way to accomplish the Directive's goals without forcing all online speech through a copyright filter. Then the EU's various legal and human rights bodies said that the proposal could NOT require filters. Confused yet? So is everyone else. The EU Commission is now preparing guidance for the EU member states, who must each turn the Directive into a national law. And that brings us to today. A coalition of giant entertainment companies has filed comments with the Commission that were the most bizarre turn in this saga yet, insisting that this was always about mandating filters and all countries should mandate that all speech be filtered: https://twitter.com/Senficon/status/1304084452767928326 They just pretended that subjecting every European citizen's every online utterance to interception and algorithmic processing wasn't a giant, glaring, radioactive violation of the GDPR, the EU's privacy law (it most assuredly is!): https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/02/upload-filters-are-odds-gdpr Today, my EFF colleague Christoph Schmon submitted our comments on the guidance to the Commission, with niine recommendations: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2020/09/eff-eu-commission-article-17-prioritize-users-rights-let-go-filters I. Crisply define what kind of online services this applies to II. Clarify that while platforms have to try to obtain copyright licenses from rightsholders, the standard is "due diligence" and is tempered by the principle of proportionality and fundamental human rights III. No tech mandates IV. No "general monitoring" allowed - governments can't order online services to spy on their user V. Clarify that the fact that copyright filters exist does not mean that they are "best practices" VI. Don't burden small businesses with requirements designed for Big Tech VII. Clarify that filters can't determine whether something is infringing - only humans who understand copyright law can do that VIII. You can't protect users' free speech rights by taking down their content and then telling them they can appeal the decision IX: Address the fact that subjecting users' speech to filtering is a massive, illegal privacy violation

[Movie] Ludwig II. (2012) | With English subtitles
Tumblr media
Ludwig II. (2012) is a dramatic retelling of the life of Ludwig II, King of Bavaria, one of the most fascinating monarchs of modern times. From his accession to the throne at the age of 18 to his passionate support of Richard Wagner and his music. From his ingenuous political commitment to his obsessive construction of extravagant palaces and to his gradual withdrawal into a lonely dream world, an epic narrative of breathtaking grandeur.

WordPress 5.3 “Kirk”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Introducing our most refined user experience with the improved block editor in WordPress 5.3! Named “Kirk” in honour of jazz multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk, the latest and greatest version of WordPress is available for download or update in your dashboard.
Tumblr media
5.3 expands and refines the block editor with more intuitive interactions and improved accessibility. New features in the editor increase design freedoms, provide additional layout options and style variations to allow designers more control over the look of a site.
This release also introduces the Twenty Twenty theme giving the user more design flexibility and integration with the block editor. Creating beautiful web pages and advanced layouts has never been easier.
Block Editor Improvements
This enhancement-focused update introduces over 150 new features and usability improvements, including improved large image support for uploading non-optimized, high-resolution pictures taken from your smartphone or other high-quality cameras. Combined with larger default image sizes, pictures always look their best.
Accessibility improvements include the integration of block editor styles in the admin interface. These improved styles fix many accessibility issues: color contrast on form fields and buttons, consistency between editor and admin interfaces, new snackbar notices, standardizing to the default WordPress color scheme, and the introduction of Motion to make interacting with your blocks feel swift and natural.
For people who use a keyboard to navigate the dashboard, the block editor now has a Navigation mode. This lets you jump from block to block without tabbing through every part of the block controls.
Expanded Design Flexibility
WordPress 5.3 adds even more robust tools for creating amazing designs.
The new Group block lets you easily divide your page into colorful sections.
The Columns block now supports fixed column widths.
The new predefined layouts make it a cinch to arrange content into advanced designs.
Heading blocks now offer controls for text and background color.
Additional style options allow you to set your preferred style for any block that supports this feature.
Introducing Twenty Twenty
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As the block editor celebrates its first birthday, we are proud that Twenty Twenty is designed with flexibility at its core. Show off your services or products with a combination of columns, groups, and media blocks. Set your content to wide or full alignment for dynamic and engaging layouts. Or let your thoughts be the star with a centered content column!
As befits a theme called Twenty Twenty, clarity and readability is also a big focus. The theme includes the typeface Inter, designed by Rasmus Andersson. Inter comes in a Variable Font version, a first for default themes, which keeps load times short by containing all weights and styles of Inter in just two font files.
Improvements for Everyone
Tumblr media
Automatic Image Rotation
Your images will be correctly rotated upon upload according to the embedded orientation data. This feature was first proposed nine years ago and made possible through the perseverance of many dedicated contributors.
Tumblr media
Improved Site Health Checks
The improvements introduced in 5.3 make it even easier to identify issues. Expanded recommendations highlight areas that may need troubleshooting on your site from the Health Check screen.
Tumblr media
Admin Email Verification
You’ll now be periodically asked to confirm that your admin email address is up to date when you log in as an administrator. This reduces the chance of getting locked out of your site if you change your email address.
For Developers
Date/Time Component Fixes
Developers can now work with dates and timezones in a more reliable way. Date and time functionality has received a number of new API functions for unified timezone retrieval and PHP interoperability, as well as many bug fixes.
PHP 7.4 Compatibility
WordPress 5.3 aims to fully support PHP 7.4. This release contains multiple changes to remove deprecated functionality and ensure compatibility. WordPress continues to encourage all users to run the latest and greatest versions of PHP.

Porsche denies has halted sale of new vehicles in Europe
HAMBURG (Reuters) – Volkswagen’s (VOWG_p.DE) Porsche unit on Friday said it would limit temporarily the number of models it sells in Europe, citing a switch to so-called WLTP lab tests related to car emissions and fuel consumption.
FILE PHOTO: A Porsche logo is pictured during the Volkswagen Group’s annual general meeting in Berlin, Germany, May 3, 2018. REUTERS/Axel Schmidt/File Photo
The measures will extend testing to ultrafine particles, which cause thousands of premature deaths, EU data shows, emitted from a new generation of gasoline direct injection engines.
The new standard will kick in on Sept. 1. Porsche said its customers could get in touch with Porsche dealerships to pre-order affected models during the transition period.
It did not specify the scope of the limitation or which models were affected.
German daily Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung had earlier reported that Porsche had stopped the sale of new cars in Europe due to the switch to new lab test standards WLTP and RDE. It cited no sources.

U.S. regulator raps VW
BERLIN (Reuters) – A U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official said he is not satisfied with Volkswagen’s (VOWG_p.DE) efforts to improve accountability after its diesel emissions fraud, German newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Thursday.
FILE PHOTO: A Volkswagen logo is pictured during the Volkswagen Group’s annual general meeting in Berlin, Germany, May 3, 2018. REUTERS/Axel Schmidt/File Photo
“The VW story is not over yet, not for VW and not for the EPA,” the business daily quoted Christopher Grundler, director of the EPA’s Office of Transportation and Air Quality as saying.
Soon after the emissions scandal broke in September 2015, the German automaker pledged to reform its closed-off corporate culture, seen by experts as a factor that facilitated the cheating, and become a more transparent business.
But some senior managers including previous chief executive Matthias Mueller have said the task of learning from past mistakes and introducing change was proving harder than expected as some managers were resisting the transformation.
“What matters to the EPA is compliance where the spirit of laws is respected rather than just the text of the law. I absolutely want to hear from VW what their efforts to this end look like and how they make sure that such a thing (like the emissions scandal) will never happen again,” Grundler said.
Handelsblatt also quoted Larry Thompson, the U.S. monitor appointed under the 2017 plea agreement to oversee VW for three years, as saying that he is “not at all satisfied” with the progress of culture change.
VW on Thursday said Thompson’s findings had uncovered “a need for action” to establish integrity and compliance rules across the multi-brand group as it struggles to overcome the “Dieselgate” scandal.
Earlier this week, VW’s head of integrity and legal affairs, Hiltrud Werner, used a speech in Washington to voice her frustration that some staff were resisting the drive for openness and leadership.
She gave an example of commonly received pushback: “Well, that diesel scandal was kicked off in technical engineering, so that has nothing to do with us. We have always produced high-quality products; it has nothing to do with us. We didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Everybody needs to understand why it should affect the entire company,” Werner said.

Katjes invests in cannabis lemonade
The candy company Katjes is known for its focus on sweets, but their subsidiary, Katjesgreenfood, has its sights set on sustainable plant-based foods. While the drink does not include THC, the substance that causes a high after consuming marijuana, it does contain CBD, a different substance known to have a positive impact on health. Update: Details on Returbo and Home24 Deal
Despite crowdfunding one million euros, Returbo, a startup that sold returned items, suddenly filed for bankruptcy in late 2016. The cause likely being PayPal’s decision to no longer resell their items over Ebay. Rocket Internet’s online furniture startup Home24 acquired the Returbo and its employees for 17,000 euros, meaning the crowdfunding investors will probably not see a penny.
