#atlasoftheheart #resentment @brenebrown writes: “We know from research that unwanted identity is the most powerful elicitor of shame.” With some of the things happening at the moment, especially this week, I resonate so deeply with this sentence. During my childhood, I was always known as the “emotional one” and this was often used against me. Now in adulthood, in any conflict or hard situation, where emotion might be completely acceptable, if I show any emotion, I am filled with shame and beat myself up for ages because (in my head) I have handled the situation wrong. There was so much that was “wrong” with me growing up. It’s where my need for perfection comes from - do it perfectly so I never get told I’m wrong - or worse —> not good enough! Accountable: To be accountable for one’s actions, to take responsibility for how one’s behavior affects others. To hold everyone accountable to the same level. To think about how you live in the context of the greater community. No words, phrases, letter style truly is expressing the intensity of this feeling. A bigger nib? A louder voice? Swearing? To trust that those who have the power to act will do so decisively and with strength. With the strength I do not feel. Petitions and phone calls. “Who will bite him when she is tired of kisses.”

Looking through the pages of this book, I find the words that may have no meaning to others but mean the world to me. The little things that someone does, the small quirks in their personality, something that may seem annoying to others but bring the biggest smile to your face. A small (or big) bite on the cheek or arm because, while a kiss would get their attention just as well, why not be a little weird around the person loves all those little quirks about you.

“Understand I love you more than anything”

Looking through the pages of this book, I search for the words that tell my story. Sometimes I find myself scouring a pages to make a poem work and on others the words seem to pop out at me. Hearing these words would lighten my heart, it would bring a smile to my face no matter what had happened that day but being able to say ‘I love you more than everything’ in response did something more fantastic than any smile on my face could. The sight of a smile so genuine looking back, being able to see the happiness in someones eyes and know you are one of the reasons it is there is an irreplaceable feeling.
