Improving a child's pincer grasp is essential for fine motor skills and handwriting skills such as pencil grip. You can get as creative as you like using popcorn! Introducing Scissors It’s important that children get the opportunity to use real metal scissors with paper, however, this is not always the best way to introduce scissors. Why? Muscle memory and strength has not been built yet for using scissors. Cutting paper can be frustrating and beyond one’s capabilities if they have not developed those muscles previously. There is this big phrase called the “Zone of Proximal Development” (ZPD). We try to offer materials and activities that are within a child’s ZPD. This means they are either able to use the materials, safely or they are almost ready. An example would be, you wouldn’t give a 2 year old a teenagers bike to ride. You wouldn’t give a teenager a 2 year olds bike to ride. Those are extreme examples but it is important to keep this in mind when offering materials to your child. You want to try to consider their current development and then offer a material that you know they can use with confidence but you also know will likely build new skills. This is called scaffolding a child’s learning. Play-do and plastic scissors is a very child-safe activity for most children over 3, unless they still mouth a lot of things.
