While we're on the subject of recruits, we thought we'd give you some information on what our firefighters get trained in when they're the new kids on the block. There are two types of training that recruits go through in Fire & Rescue NSW. In Phase 1 recruit training, recruits complete a "Demo Cell" which introduces them to the basic concepts of fire dynamics and behaviour. This includes pyrolysis (the decomposition of organic materials in to flammable gasses and liquids, which then burn and promote fire growth), ventilation (how a fire reacts to increased and decreased ventilation, and the ability to identify and differentiate between ventilation or fuel controlled fires), correct use of branches to effectively combat fires through gas cooling, and the importance of recognising the signs of impending flashover or backdraft, and the dangers these phenomenons pose to firefighters. This is some of the recruits from the photo we posted earlier today, completing their Demo Cell burn at Wellington. Now they'll get to go back home and apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills on fires in communities right around NSW.
