Cicadas, Expansion Talk and Holidays in June: Ten Things to Know in the American Assoc. This Week
Tumblr media
The American Association of Professional Baseball (@AA_Baseball) season continues with a full slate of series this weekend, all available for free live viewing at aabaseball.tv.
Here are 10 Things to Know about the AAPB this week:
The colorful cicadas may be an annoyance to some, but the Kane County Cougars aren't one to brood. Instead, with the 13-year and 17-year cycles converging (we're not entomologists, but we play them on AABaseball.tv), tonight is Kane County Cicadas Night at Northwestern Medicine Field vs. the Kansas City Monarchs. The team will wear special Cicada-themed jerseys which will be auctioned off for charity, and the first thousand fans receive a custom insect swatter.
Juneteenth, Father's Day, Flag Day, Pride Month and National Cucumber Day (ok, that one might be a stretch) are all celebrated across the country in June. But two AAPB teams have a couple of other ideas... Halloween (Chicago Dogs, Saturday) and Halfway to Christmas (Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, Tuesday) will bring those popular holidays back a few months early.
On Tuesday, the AAPB announced another in a series of key corporate partnerships, this one with MOBILEMONEY, now the official cashless payment solutions provider to the league and its member clubs.
Sometimes a change of position can make all the difference. The Kansas City Star and Yahoo! Sports have the story of Monarchs outfielder-turned-pitcher Nate Tellier, a .342 hitter in college whose coach suspected – rightfully so – that the mound might be a better route for the righthander in the pros. So far, so good, as he’s posted a 2.11 ERA over 17 innings at press time.
Big things are happening around the AAPB, and the time might just be right to grow the footprint, which now currently extends to 12 team across 10 states. Commissioner Joshua Schaub recently discussed the prospects for expansion at Fargo’s Valley News Live, potentially doubling the number of franchises by 2028-29..
Another 10Things, Another Homecoming as Winnipeg native Ben Onyshko signed with the hometown Goldeyes last week. The 27-year-old lefty was originally selected by the Seattle Mariners out of Steston (Fla.) Univ, reaching AAA Tacoma. He started his Goldeyes career with two innings of hitless relief on Friday to help preserve a win over Sioux City.
The Gary SouthShore RailCats along with other businesses sponsored a luncheon for local businesses and leaders for clean air initiatives for Northern Indiana last week. The luncheon awarded three college scholarships to local students in the areas and recognized four businesses making voluntary efforts to improve clean air quality in 2023.
In a few alumni moves:
Kane County outfielder Je'Von Ward had his contract purchased by Toronto and homered in his first game with Single-A Vancouver on Saturday.
Now former Kansas City Monarch Blake Rutherford is heading to Mexico to play for Toros de Tijuana in the Mexican Baseball League. Rutherford, a former MLB player, originally drafted in the first round to the New York Yankees in 2016, but finally made his big league debut in 2023 with the Washington Nationals. This season with the Monarchs, he posted a .328 batting average, .911 OPS, and launched three home runs.
After hitting .331 in the Low-A Florida State League, infielder Payton Eeles (Chicago '23) was promoted to Cedar Rapids, the Twins' High-A affiliate.
The Record Watch department has its eyes on Fargo's Izzy Alcantara, who has 30 stolen bases through his team's first 33 games. The AAPB record is 71, set by the Milwaukee Milkmen’s Bryan Torres last season. Torres continues to rake with the Cardinals’ AA affiliate in Springfield, hitting in eight straight games last week to boost his average to .329 with 16 stolen bases at press time.

When the National Football League kicks off its season on Sept. 10, it will do so with a song that is unknown to some Americans and essential to others. “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” otherwise known as the Black national anthem, was introduced to many by Beyoncé when she sang it at Coachella two years ago. But the song has long been a pillar of Black culture and life, sung at church ceremonies, political protests, school graduations and family gatherings. “Four generations of my family, at least, have lived with this anthem,” Imani Perry wrote in May Forever We Stand, her book about the song. “It is our common thread.”
During the NFL’s opening week, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” will be performed before each game, ahead of “The Star Spangled Banner,” as an effort to reinforce the league’s professed newfound alignment with Black Lives Matter. But this decision—which has been met with skepticism across the ideological spectrum—is just the latest example of the song’s reinvigoration in American public life. It’s been performed at protests across the country following the police killing of George Floyd, slipped into national anthems at NASCAR races and even co-opted by Joe Biden for one of his campaign proposals, “Lift Every Voice: The Biden Plan For Black America.”
Here’s a history of the song, and an examination of how its influence has persisted over 120 years.
“A universal signifier of Black identity”
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written during a fraught moment in African-American history. At the dawn of the 20th century, post-Civil War reconstruction efforts were being dismantled; segregation had been codified through Plessy v Ferguson; and a Jim Crow reign of terror and exploitation was taking hold across the country.
In this hostile climate, many Black communities turned inward, forming their own schools, newspapers, musical groups, religious and social organizations. James Weldon Johnson and John Rosamond Johnson, two brothers from Jacksonville, Fla., were steeped in these institutions: James was a poet, lawyer and the principal of a segregated school, while John Rosamond taught music there.
In 1899, James set out to write a poem commemorating the birthday of Abraham Lincoln. “My thoughts began buzzing round a central idea of writing a poem about Lincoln but I couldn’t net them,” he wrote in his autobiography, Along This Way. Instead, he wrote a poem about Black struggle and perseverance and asked his brother to set his words to music. The result, which moved James himself to tears, captured a painful history of oppression (“Stony the road we trod/ Bitter the chastening rod”) while ending on a note of resilience: “May we forever stand/ True to our God/ True to our native land.”
The song was first performed the following year at Johnson’s school by a group of 500 children. The Johnsons would soon move out of Jacksonville following a deadly fire that ripped through the city. They brought the song to a Harlem arts scene that was quickly becoming a hotbed of creativity. Meanwhile, the song would also independently spread outward from its original city. “The school children of Jacksonville kept singing it; they went off to other schools and sang it; they became teachers and taught it to other children,” James said in 1935.
As the song was passed along communally, it was also boosted by powerful Black leaders and organizations, including the National Association of Colored Women’s Clubs and Booker T. Washington. In 1919, the NAACP named it its official song; James Weldon Johnson would be appointed the organization’s first African American executive secretary a year later.
Before long, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” would become, in Perry’s words, “a universal signifier of Black identity.” It was sung at church services, civic organization meetings, pageants and graduations; it anchored Emancipation Day and Negro History Week celebrations and daily school rituals.
“I sang the Negro National Anthem when I was hungry,” Congresswoman Maxine Waters wrote in Lift Every Voice and Sing: A Celebration of the Negro National Anthem, edited by Julian Bond and Sondra Kathryn Wilson. “I sang the Negro National Anthem when my tooth was hurting because of an exposed cavity—I sang the Negro National Anthem when I did not know there was a future for a little black girl with twelve sisters and brothers.”
A symbol of resistance
As Black activists continued to mobilize in their fight against discrimination and segregation, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” took on an increasingly political bent, symbolizing defiance in the face of white oppression. In 1929, it was sung in support of the unionization of Black porters; In 1936, it opened the first conference of the National Negro Congress, an anti-fascist organization fighting for Black liberation. Maya Angelou, in her autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, recalled singing the song with her Black classmates in Oakland as a rejoinder to a visiting racist white politician.
When the Civil Rights Era began in the 1950s, “Lift Every Voice and Sing” was sung during organizational meetings for the Montgomery Bus Boycott and quoted in speeches by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. But as folk music rose to the fore, the song was soon supplanted by a new wave of freedom songs like “We Shall Overcome” and “We Shall Not Be Moved,” whose simple and direct choruses were sung with fervor at marches from Selma to Washington.
“Lift Every Voice and Sing,” however, would soon regain its urgency, as harrowing police violence and unwavering systems of segregation would mar the early pacifist optimism of the Civil Rights Movement. In Forever We Stand, Perry writes that by the late ’60s, “We Shall Overcome” “seemed naive and even insipid in comparison to the reach for soul and the deliberate invocation of the African continent and diaspora.”
As a new generation of Black activists, artists and politicians rose to the fore in the ’70s, they adopted “Lift Every Voice and Sing” as a symbol of resistance. Following King’s assassination, a crowd in Roxbury, Mass., sang the song, with Reverend Virgil Wood declaring, “We will not sing the anthem that has dishonored us, but we will sing the one that has honored us.”
The song was played regularly at Black nationalist meetings, and in 1972 became the anthem for Black students in Newark who staged walkouts demanding Black teachers and Black curriculum. Three years later, James Brown slipped a line from the song into the national anthem before Muhammad Ali’s bout against Chuck Wepner, pleading, “we wanna be free.”
Renewed relevance
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” would remain an essential part of the fabric of Black culture in the coming decades, with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Kim Weston, Stevie Wonder and many more performing covers. Spike Lee placed a snippet of the song in his seminal film Do the Right Thing; In 2009, Rev. Joseph Lowery quoted the song during President Barack Obama’s inauguration.
The musician Jon Batiste has played his part in keeping the song relevant: as the bandleader of Stay Human, which anchors The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, he’s often worked the song into broadcasts, particularly when a Black guest is on the program. “There are so many appropriate moments to bring it out,” he says. “Sometimes when I play it it’s almost equivalent to saying, ‘look y’all, we made it!’”
But Batiste also recognizes the more somber aspects of the song, especially given that his grandfather, who was the president of a New Orleans postal workers union, often marched to the song at Civil Rights protests. “It connects us to the history of all the people who we stand on the shoulders of—who have marched and fought and died for the freedoms we enjoy and that we’re trying to improve upon,” he says.
When George Floyd was killed by Minnesota police earlier this year, Batiste organized a musical protest in New York, marching from Union Square to Washington Square Park. He and his band opened the procession with the song, and then played it four to five times along the way, with marchers singing along. “When you play that song, people rise up and stand together and remember all that we have gone through,” he says. “It’s like saying, ‘If we can get through all of that, we can transcend even this moment of atrocity.”
Batiste is one of many who are turning to “Lift Every Voice and Sing” in this current moment. The song has been sung at protests from Seattle to Delaware; Stanford alumni recorded a socially distanced choral version, while the oboist Titus Underwood led a symphonic version featuring an all-Black orchestra. At a NASCAR race, saxophonist Mike Phillips and pianist West Byrd slipped it into the national anthem, just as Brown had decades before.
That was incredible. Legendary saxophonist @m_dot_philly performs our national anthem.

— FOX: NASCAR (@NASCARONFOX) June 28, 2020
That performance, perhaps unsurprisingly, drew ire from some on the right, who felt it unpatriotic to tweak the national anthem. Meanwhile, when the NFL announced it would feature the song on opening week, some members of the Black community felt that the decision ignored the song’s history and original intent. “For it to be co-opted by an organization like the NFL is very troubling to me,” Shana Redmond, a professor of musicology and African American studies at the University of California, Los Angeles, says. “I’m thinking about the ways in which symbols are manipulated for profiteering, for easy concessions in moments of violence, and become an opportunity to elide accountability for the structural damage the NFL in particular continues to wreak out.”
Regardless of the song’s usage this September, its influence on Black culture over more than a century has been immeasurable—and musicians like Batiste hope that it will continue to represent solidarity and defiance for years to come. “There’s so much that can be done in a musical context to tie people to the past while moving them to the future,” he says. “That’s what the song will continue to do—and I’ll be playing it as long as I’m out here.”

Getting In Touch With Higher Education Buyers
What You Must Know To Effectively Sell To This Market
Universities and colleges use branded merchandise across so many avenues—from gift and spirit stores to student recruiting, alumni groups, on-campus events, athletic events, advocacy efforts and more. As prolific as promotional products are around campuses, many of these higher-education marketers are not at all familiar with our industry’s supply chain.
To make it even more confusing, the collegiate structure makes it difficult to determine who owns the process since it encompasses everything from spirit shops, bookstores, alumni events, sports clubs, sports teams, advocacy events, departmental promotions, etc. However, one thing is certain; there are definitely many opportunities for educating these education marketers in terms of brand safety and responsible sourcing of their logoed goods.
  Connecting With Buyers
Held November 4-7, 2018, the AMA Symposium for the Marketing of Higher Education hosted 1,200+ attendees, most of whom were senior management—presidents, vice presidents, CMOs and marketing directors from both the education establishments as well as the marketing agencies they use. Being in education, they were eager to learn.
Moreover, we learned as much from them as they did from us. This market is very concerned about social responsibilities and the treatment of workers, so the Fair Labor Association (FLA) is held in high regard. So while the promotional products industry is generally very focused on product safety, there is a disconnect about how important social responsibility is to these buyers.
Additionally, these buyers are widely uninformed when it comes to brand safety knowledge with promotional products. “While they understand brand safety from the digital media standpoint, these buyers have not considered it for promotional products,” says Tim Brown, QCA’s executive director of operations, who attended the event. “Many did not respect branded merchandise enough to care until I shared the points of the PPAI’s Get In Touch Campaign and then they began to understand how valuable and impactful the advertising medium is.”
“Once people wrapped their heads around the topic, they wanted to know the simplest way to ensure compliance,” he continues. “We shared questions to ask their current distributors, let them know about our Distributor Advocacy Council (DAC), and talked about the value not only of QCA but other third-party accreditations and certifications such as FLA, ISO, B-Corps and WRAP.”
Overall, QCA’s message of brand safety resonated with attendees who were already enamored by the volume of promotional products filling the exhibit hall. “Within seconds of inquiring about what QCA does, they understood the importance of an independent accreditation body in the promotional products space,” Tim notes.
Unfortunately, there were some very negative overall impressions of the industry. However, things improved once they learned about QCA’s efforts in holding the industry accountable. “Their opinions changed so much that some even shared other audiences and organizations that they believed would benefit from the knowledge we provide and offered to make introductions,” Tim says.
“Part of the conversation included the advantages of branded merchandise over other media to get these buyers past the idea of ‘giveaways’ and get them into understanding the value of promotional products within the marketing mix,” he continues. “Topics such as tangibility, cost per impression, why the design of the product must be built into the messaging up front and why they should expect more from their promotional marketing vendors resonated, and I could see the seeds taking root.”
Takeaways: What You Need To Know
While each college and university is unique, there are similarities when looking at this market as a whole. Therefore, if you want to grow your business by expanding into this market or you’re currently selling to this market and want to do it better, keep these top three things in mind:
These buyers should be asking where products come from and what assurances the distributor can offer related protecting their brand reputation. If they’re not asking these questions, take the lead and proactively answer them. Moving the conversation beyond “how much” and “in what quantity” to “how the chosen products will promote the cause and limit risk” will be more effective while separating yourself from the competition.
The most often-asked question we experienced was “how often does QCA re-accredit suppliers and what do we do to hold them continuously accountable.” If you are working with QCA Accredited Suppliers, then you know accreditation is granted for a twenty-four month period, after which suppliers must re-accredit to maintain their status in good standing. If you’re not working with QCA Accredited Suppliers, then you’ll have to contact your suppliers for current documentation. Either way, you should know that these buyers are very concerned with social accountability and environmental stewardship, and they’ll want documentation to prove ethical sourcing for their products.
Because human rights and looking out for their communities is extremely important to these buyers, this makes managing promotional products a much bigger deal than they realize: the more touch-points, the more that could go wrong. Thus, these buyers need to become better informed about brand management and risk-based responsible sourcing. This is where an expert promotional consultant can showcase their value to land the business.

“Shine” was written by two MSD students, Sawyer Garrity and Andrea Pena, in the days following the mass shooting that left 14 students and three faculty members dead. The original song has become an anthem of heartbreak, tribute and recovery in the MSD community.
Listeners can feel and hear those sentiments in the song, and now, thanks to the video, people can see them as well.
Parkland Alumni, Survivors Advocate for Safer Gun Laws
The video is directed by Los Angeles-based Brittani Kagan, who works at Portal A digital entertainment. Kagan is an alumna of MSD's class of 2007, and she says she channeled her emotions and pain into her work with her alma mater.
“It all came together beautifully, bigger than I ever could’ve imagined when I had this idea,” Kagan said via Skype. “And every single crew member worked for free.”
Officials Warned to Institutionalize Alleged School Shooter
Produced by New York-based Jane Bloom, and utilizing professional videographers and editors, the video had a budget of zero dollars. Everyone donated their services.
“I’m so forever grateful for them, it’s just so amazing to see how many people are truly supporting us,” said Sawyer Garrity, a co-writer of the song. “I really think the music video truly encompasses what we want the song to be about, it really honors the victims in a way I think is just beautiful.”
In the beginning of the video, there’s a series of simple but powerful scenes, in which pictures of each victim are held by their parents, family members or friends.
“It not only honors the 17 but also shows that through all the darkness that my school and classmates and my teachers have been through, that we can overcome something like this,” said Andrea Pena, co-writer of “Shine.”
Students in the school’s drama club recruited their peers to be in the production.
“So it was really good for the community to come together for that and also just the song in general, it’s really upbeat and beautiful and I think it really brings the community together,” said sophomore Logan Weber, who worked with the professional video crew as a student director.
Listeners can feel and hear the emotions of the MSD students. Now, thanks to the video, listeners can see them as well.

Samuel F. Heffner Jr., a real estate developer and builder who embraced the concept of an “aerotropolis” at Baltimore’s airport, died April 8 at Gilchrist Hospice Care of complications from a head injury he suffered in a vehicle accident. A resident of Phoenix in Baltimore County, he was 82.
Born in Bradford, Pa., he was the son of Samuel F. Heffner Sr. and Erma Heffner. He earned a bachelor’s degree in architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where he remained an active alumnus and served as chairman of the school’s board of trustees for 15 years. An alumni building is named in his honor.
He served in the Air Force and then joined U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh before moving to Baltimore, where he worked in the real estate division of McCormick & Co. He helped develop Hunt Valley warehouses and manufacturing buildings.
Mr. Heffner was a pilot, and he flew aircraft throughout his life. In the 1960s, when he would fly into what is now Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport, he noted the underdeveloped lands around it. He recalled that much of the land was taken up by pig farms and that cows grazed near the runways of what he described as a “sleepy airport.”
“Most airports contained a huge amount of development,” he said in a 1997 Baltimore Sun article. “And this one didn’t. It was way behind what was happening in other parts of the country.”
Marylanders who have died in January 2017.
He later left McCormick, became a partner in the firm of Dickinson-Heffner and built a warehouse-office building on land he owned on Elkridge Landing Road. The site later became a National Security Agency facility. He also built an annex to the Social Security Administration headquarters at Woodlawn and the former Maryland State Department of Education headquarters.
“Sam was one of our early business leaders,” said former Anne Arundel County Executive Robert R. Neall. “He was solid and established himself in this region. He was really an asset to Anne Arundel County.”
Marylanders who have died in March 2017.
In 1977, Mr. Heffner took on a partner, Mitchell Weber, also an RPI graduate. In 1994, the firm became Heffner & Weber.
The 1997 Sun article noted that Mr. Heffner and his partner were “largely responsible for the sprawling development that’s mushroomed around Baltimore-Washington International Airport.”
He acquired additional tracts of land and built Airport Square, also on Elkridge Landing Road, and later expanded into Nursery Road. His firm built the Hoyts Cinemas complex and numerous hotels and office structures adjacent to the airport. Colleagues said he used the term “aerotropolis” to describe his holdings.
His firm also designed and built the Maryland Department of Transportation headquarters in Hanover.
Mr. Heffner became a founder and chair of the BWI Business Partnership, an organization that promotes transportation and financial interests in the area.
“It was part of Sam’s passion that we were able to design and build a project from the cradle up,” said Mr. Weber. “We were nimble and worked with a nucleus of talented people, and Sam was our leader.”
Mr. Heffner served on the boards of Mannington Mills Co., a floor covering firm, and the University of Maryland Medical System.
He was also active with Greater Baltimore Medical Center and was chair of its HealthCare Philanthropy Committee. He spearheaded a $54.7 million fundraising campaign for the hospital’s 50th anniversary in 2015 and was also a major donor to the hospital.
“Sam Heffner was a man of many accomplishments who gave so much back to Baltimore,” Dr. John Chessare, president of GBMC HealthCare, said in a statement. “We will be forever grateful for Sam’s leadership on our Board of Directors and as the Chair of the Board’s Philanthropy Committee.”
Me. Heffner had been chairman of the national board of Delta Kappa Epsilon, his college fraternity.
In 2011 RPI awarded him an honorary doctorate for his years of service to the school.
Mr. Heffner enjoyed playing golf and sailing at the Winter Harbor Yacht Club in Maine. He was also a resident of Florida, and lived at the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo. He also belonged to the Card Sound Club at Ocean Reef, Fla., and the Tralee Golf Club in Kerry, Ireland.
Mr. Heffner’s family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ruck Towson Funeral Home, 1050 York Road.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen C. Heffner of Pasadena and Scott T. Heffner of Reisterstown; and three grandchildren. His wife of 55 years, Gail Elaine Porter, a nurse and pilot, died in 2015.
