Oh god my dude, the Clipped Wings fic (it was great btw, I really felt the dread of Mirabel slowly becoming something, not her, and the families, especially Julieta's feelings about it) had me at the edge of my seat, what did Abuela say??? I'm very worried for Mirabel, is she gonna be ok??
Clipped Wings isn’t necessarily canon to the main ‘arc’ of the AU, It was just a little drabble I wrote to shake off a few thoughts. But it’s interesting to think, how far Mirabel would go to be part of her own family - to find acceptance in the one person who’s she’s always looked to for guidance only to be invisible.
To be honest, I don’t think Abuela actually said anything. I imagine she listened as her youngest granddaughter promised to be better, so long as she wasn’t sent away. To do whatever Abuela asked so long as she could stay.
Abuela isn’t forcing Mira to close herself off - Mira chose to do that on her own because that’s what Abuela wanted in her. Quiet, well behaved, and out of the way of the rest of the family.

I was thinking, for flightless au Antonio, it must be quite confusing and distressing that not many people can see Mirabels wings? Especially because how young he is I can imagine him bringing it up to some of the family members and getting so upset and frustrated when they say she doesn’t have any. Or when he hears people in town talking down on her about it, but no one will believe him about it
YES! Absolutely. I actually have a drabble planned around this very subject so hopefully we’ll see more of Mira’s wings from the perspective of Antonio in the near future :3 💛

For Flightless!AU has anyone else seen Mirabels wings (specifically the see through gold ones, not the physical ones)? Or has it just been Julieta and Bruno who have seen them
Antonio and Agustín can see them as well! Probably more then Julieta and Bruno can. Agustín doesn’t care about his daughters lack of wings and sees right to her golden heart. Antonio is the same; he looks at her as a role model and a sister…someone who wants nothing more then to protect her. He’s the one who can actually see her wings the brightest as he spends the most time with her :)

In the flightless Au if Bruno and Mirabel spend more time together what are some of the things they do together?
Also, what is Bruno's reaction to the first time Mirabel falls asleep against him or underneath his wings?
We all know Bruno is an awkward been in all but the Tainted Au so I can just imagine his slightly panicking as he tries not to wake up the baby bird that is his danger-prone niece lol!
They don’t do much of anything really. Mirabel stays with him for about three days in his secret grotto, where he shows her the beauty of the jungle, and allows her to explore to her hearts content. She’s so used to being coddled over and kept busy, that she really doesn’t have much time to just..breathe. To really allow her curiosity to hold her attention. They talk a lot about family expectations, and what it’s like to feel small amongst giants. He gives her some insight that not having wings isn’t necessarily the answer to all of her problems, and that she’s still got quite a bit of growing up to do when it comes to the world.

For Flightless, trying not to think of little Camilo and Mirabel making plans on tricks, pranks, and games they could play once they get their wings. Both making guesses on what their wings would look like. Trying not to think about how happy and excited the two would have been when Cam got his wings. Trying not to think about how devastated the two were when Mira's ceremony fails.
Ow, my heart ❤️‍🩹 I haven’t done a post-ceremony angst drabble yet but I really should. I can’t imagine how small Mira felt that night. How much pain she was in.
Camilo wouldn’t ever understand the weight on her back, even though there wasn’t anything there. He’d never know how fragile her little ticking heart was, waiting for the day when she would be special too. When she would be a true Madrigal and earn her right to the sky. He didn’t know how many times she watched him — watched all of them — loop about in the air and play, while she was stuck on the ground. Left out of the games and fun because she can’t ever take flight. So often Mira felt like a stone in a deep pond…constantly drowning. Constantly hurting. Constantly waiting for something…anything…to happen that might ease the pressure. Even for just a second. Waiting for some kind of miracle.
A miracle that never came. A miracle further away from her then her own death seemed to be. Because of course…when she fell? She felt weightless. It wasn’t the hope she had wanted, nor the feathers she asked for. But it was the closest she’d ever be to flying as her head hit the pavement and the Casita cracked beneath her.

Hey sorry to bother you again but I was wondering, how would flightless au Isabela react to cannon au Isabela. Do you think the two would get along or would slap cannon Isabela for treating Mirabel so badly. (Before the movie) Do you think Flightless Isabela would try to help cannon Isa and Mirabel get along?
F!Isabela was heading in the direction of her canon counterpart before Mirabel’s accident. They didn’t really get along before it happened, and Isa felt annoyed by her presence and felt she was kinda a nuisance, wanting to tag along for everything. She was busy trying to please Abuela, and didn’t really see how poor her attitude and treatment of her little sister was. After Mira fell and Isabela almost had her die in her arms, she knew she had messed up. She knew that if Mira had slipped away? Isa wouldn’t ever be able to forgive herself for how she treated her. It’s what opened her up; the experience shattered Isa’s resolve. M
F!Isabela would be able to see where Canon Isa is coming from, as she would’ve ended up the same way had something not changed. She would - of course - smack her counterpart upside the head with a wing and tell her that she was an idiot. Force her to look and see how hard Mirabel wants to be part of the family and that alienating her isn’t doing anyone any favors. She’d push them together, make them talk it out. And Canon Isabela would break in a similar way so the two could really have a strong bond.

It just occurred to me that I have no idea about this and I absolutely must know despite it being 12:30 am here
DOES FLIGHTLESS TAKE PLACE IN AN ERA/UNIVERSE WITH PROPER BIKE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. DOES THIS POOR CHILD HAVE A HELMET. KNEEPADS. ELBOW PADS. JULIETA WOULD SURELY GO INSANE TRYING TO GET MIRABEL INTO A PROPER BIKE HELMET. PLEASE, MIRABEL. PLEASE JUST PUT ON THE HELMET. PLEASE.
I know we all kind of assume that Encanto takes place in like... The before-times when electricity wasn't a thing and dinosaurs roamed the earth but is that ever explicitly stated? I'm driving myself crazy. Doesn't Mirabel have like... A sewing machine in canon?
ENCANTO WHEN DO YOU TAKE PLACE AND ALSO PLEASE I'M BEGGING YOU MAKE IT A TIME WHEN FLIGHTLESS MIRA CAN WEAR A HELMET THAT WILL KEEP HER POOR LITTLE HEAD FROM CRACKING OPEN
Tumblr media
Y-you think Mira wears a helmet? Oh dear friend, no. No she doesn’t.
They are around of course, but it was hard enough getting a bike in the Encanto. Proper safety equipment for it is practically null in the valley. I’m sure the bike on its own was one Agustín really had to work hard to get hold of and fix up himself, as resources from the outside are pretty scarce and have to be brought in from the few who traverse the mountains for trade.
He probably didn’t even think about a helmet or knee/elbow pads ❤️‍🩹🥲

Hey there! Been absolutely loving you’re content! I was wondering In flightless which family members Mira is closest too and what the relationship between individual family members looks like in general?
Awe thank you for enjoying!
Mirabel is actually closest to Isabela in this AU. After her accident, any sort of rivalry or malice between the two dissipated instantly. Isa didn’t like the feeling of nearly losing her little sister because she wasn’t there for her, and felt deeply that she had failed as a sister. So the two bonded once Mirabel healed and was back on her feet. Isa’s door is always open for her hermanita, and she makes a lot more effort to be there when Mirabel is struggling with the weight of the world. And though Isa is overprotective like their mama, Mira knows it’s just because she’s worried, and appreciates the concern even if it’s exhausting sometimes. Similarly, after bonding with Mirabel, Isa also began patching up her relationships with her other family members as well, and is back to being besties with Dolores, and treating both Luisa and Camilo like actual siblings instead of just…coworkers.
Dolores and Mirabel are fairly close as well, Dolores usually being a source of wisdom for Mirabel to bounce ideas off of, or to simply get feelings off her chest. Despite her gossipy nature, Dolores is a wonderful listener and gives awesome advice whenever her prima is in a bind. Contrary wise, Mirabel is a wonderful source of comfort for Dolores, who is often overwhelmed by the goings on around her, and just needs someone to hold onto for a second who won’t mind. Mirabel is always willing to help Dolores ground herself, and be a bit of comic relief in those really tense moments.
Camilo and Mirabel have always been super close. They grew up together in the Nursery, and are close in age. He’s a wonderful wingman for a bunch of her stunts, but also is one of the few who isn’t overprotective of her to near suffocation. Camilo gets that Mira needs to be a little bit wild in order to get her energy out, but is also there should something happen to her and she need a bit of feathered assistance. Mirabel is there for Camilo in a similar way, often being his right hand in pranks and troublemaking, but also being a source of comfort when he’s struggling with himself.
Luisa and Mirabel love to talk. They talk about anything and everything under the sun. Mirabel will sit on Luisa’s shoulder like a parrot as they go around town completing chores, and just chat to keep themselves busy. Luisa likes it cause she doesn’t feel quite as lonely, and it makes her workload a bit more fun. Mirabel likes it because she gets to just enjoy time with her hermana who always seems so busy. If they manage to finish up early, Luisa will sometimes even take her out for a fly around the valley, though those moments are few and far between.
Mirabel’s relationship to Antonio is the same as in canon. She adores him like a little brother, and the coolest roommate ever. He sees her as a big sister, and is one of the few who can really look beyond what she lacks to the golden heart within.
Pepa and Felíx are usually a bit busy to be hanging around with their youngest niece. But they will always stop to greet her when they have a chance. And Pepa will always give her the various feathers she drops as she sheds a lot due to her large wingspan.
Mirabel is both very close, and very annoyed by her mother. She loves mama dearly, and would do anything for her. But her overprotectiveness is a bit much at times. Mira knows of course that she tends to put herself in bad positions, and gets hurt a lot. But she always feels her mama takes it all just a bit too seriously, and it’s really putting a lot of pressure on her. Mira of course will never say anything because she doesn’t want the coddling to get even worse.
Her and Agustín are thicker then thieves. He’s happy that she’s out finding her way in the world, and is always happy to give her little lessons on his trumpet, or help fix up her bike.
Abuela and Mirabel…well, their relationship is similar to that of the film. There’s not a lot going on there - not much tenderness to be found. Abuela of course cares for all of those in the Casita, but struggles to understand Mirabel’s recklessness and energetic demeanor.
Bruno? Mirabel doesn’t know what to do with her awkward and reclusive uncle yet.

So what was Abuela's reaction to Mirabel's near death incident in Flightless?
Oo difficult question.
Naturally of course she was deeply concerned for her youngest granddaughter at the time. She did her best to console the family as they waited for her to heal and return to them. But Abuela Alma struggles a lot with deeper connections. She can only really see surface deep. She saw her families grief and reacted to it accordingly, but since losing her beloved Pedro all those years ago she cant really push forward to truly empathize with the situation. It’s the strategy that’s kept her sane all these years. For if she let that emotion get out? She could break apart and fail her family, for she still held so much pain inside.
It’s why the accident didn’t bring her and Mirabel any closer then before. Because she only saw that her granddaughter had made a stupid mistake and nearly paid the price for it. Of course she worried, and she was happy when Mirabel healed, but it wasn’t the deep, aching grief that Julieta or Isabela felt after it happened. Her pushing Mirabel away after the fact is a result of her struggling to see how hard she’s trying to be part of the family, and only seeing her as a childish disruption to the order of things.
This isn’t Tainted though, so Alma really does love her granddaughter. She’ll always try and be gentle; always drape a blanket over her if she’s asleep in a weird spot. She’ll always include her at family meals, and in the village, and generally have her best interests in mind. But Alma can’t see that her expectations are an ever heightening pole jump for someone like Mirabel. Who is slowly crumbling under the weight but not showing it.

Whenever Mirabel falls asleep in their wings, does her family just not move until she's awake or do they just carry her everywhere depending on the person? Sort of like when a car falls asleep on top of somebody and suddenly you're overcome with the instinct to just not move because if you do they'll wake up.
DONT MOVE IF MIRABEL IS SLEEPING NEAR YOU.
She can fall asleep almost anywhere, but she’s still very sensitive to movement or talking around her. So if she falls asleep in her families wings, or leaning up against them, they dare not move lest she wake up. It’s why feather piles are so nice, because everyone is comfortable and content to sit for a while and just wait for her to wake up on her own, rather then to be stuck with her, and have to wake her up themselves which makes her cranky (and then results in a ton of hyperactivity).

are there any prizes for winning Monkey Tap?
For casual matches? Usually just some bragging rights. For the monthly matches the captains can accept bets on their team from villagers. If they win, the bet is doubled by the losing party, then split amongst the team. It’s not a whole lot, maybe a coin or something, but it’s still more to these kids then they’d ever usually see on their own.

Oohh is Mirabel able to use her wings to help her with biking around?
It would certainly help with those rough landings, don’t you think? And a single beat of those feathers and she could absolute rip across the landscape at lightning speed :)

Note
if the ending in flightless au is the same, is Mirabel given a feather by Abuela?
Probably yeah! Abuela and Mirabel have a lot of reconciliation to do so a feather to finish off Mira’s collection may be a great starting point :)

Flightless Mirabel. Tiny girl. We love her! Would she get any taller as she gets older?
Honestly? Probably not a whole lot. The family expected her to grow a bit bigger when she hit 10-11, since that’s when normal non-magical kids started to show their height. And she did gain a few inches during this time, but stopped when she hit 12 and hasn’t gotten any bigger since. There have been questions about why she’s so tiny, and the answer ended up being a mix of stinted growth caused by magical withdrawals, being born a bit too early (she was technically a preemie) and just a literal short stick when it came to genetics.
Julieta thinks theres a medical reason as well since Mirabel has such a hard time regulating her body temperature, and sleeps way more then a girl her age should. But no one really can say for sure. She’s not unhealthy by any means; in fact her muscle mass is a bit more then expected. She’s just super smol.
Tiny girl is best girl ❤️

I Am Looking at flightless au Bruno with the normal amount of interest, especially the fact that he can see Mirabel's wings. Any thoughts on the first time he spots them?
Ah, yes. Gentle and reclusive Bruno.
Unlike canon, Bruno left the family before Mirabel was even born. He doesn’t know her; never saw the family collapsing at her hand in a vision because he left before she ever failed to get a gift. Her accident brought the family back together (sans Abuela) on its own, fulfilling her destiny early and leaving room for a new one to take its place.
That being said, Bruno has no preconceptions about who Mirabel is or what has happened to her in the past. This allows him to see right to her true self; past the ‘Madrigal’ name she wears but has no proof of. He sees her kindness, her youth and fearlessness. He sees her longing to break out, past her size, and the recklessness that comes with it. Bruno doesn’t know Mirabel is his niece until her family comes to find her, and bring her back home to be coddled over.
He sees her wings as she’s guided back towards the village. Sees them glittering faintly in the light of a dying evening as she’s pulled back to her prison by the hand, feathers practically clipped by her familia’s overprotectiveness.

When Camilo shapeshifter in the Flightless!AU what happens to his wings? Do they camouflage or turn invisible or stay visible?
If he just changes as is without any thought the wings will stay the same. He has to think about what he wants them to do. If he wants them to change color with a shift he has to imagine the colors that he wants. If he wants them to vanish, he has to think about them vanishing. They don’t actually disappear, but change to be the same colors as whatever he is wearing and flatten till they are almost not noticeable at all.
