A wonderful find on the beach. A bone scraper from the Neolithic period (thanks to @barrywhughes for the info). Over 4000 years since it was struck! . . . . . #neolithic #margate #beachfind #sea #coast #kent #flinttools #flint #picoftheday #stoneage #stoneagetools (at Margate, Kent) https://www.instagram.com/p/CkyIsVEosNq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

#TuesdayTip : Sometimes you just need to make things dirty! . One potential problem with experimental archaeology is that your pieces are just too fresh and clean. Even those archaeological objects that are beautifully preserved have still been sitting in the ground for thousands of years, so there's bound to be some bits of dirt caught in the smallest cracks. Especially for my research, which uses microscopic analysis to look at tiny traces of manufacture and use, the level of dirt in a teeny tiny groove can make a big difference in how easy it is to identify the traces. . Take my recent experiment for example. It was possible to see the different kinds of grooves I was making, but it was quite difficult to see clearly their exact shape because it was all so white and clean and reflective. So, I went to an obliging nearby plant pot and used a pinch of soil to dirty up the surface a bit. Even after washing it afterwards, there remained a little bit of soil in the cracks, which not only made it easier to analyse, but also looked much more comparable to the original archaeological objects. . The joys of problem solving! . #archaeology #archaeologist #PhD #phdlife #experimentalarchaeology #ivory #flinttools #microwear #microwearanalysis #microscope #workingfromhome #homeoffice #prehistoric #problemsolving https://www.instagram.com/p/CJrWVATLoRv/?igshid=g79sa4slg8ru

Following on from yesterday’s video, I thought I’d put together a flatlay of the more interesting flint finds from the field edges near and around our home. The bluer ones I found a couple of years back and the brown ones found in the last week. I’m a sucker for the ones with nibbled edges, potentially made by our Neolithic or Mesolithic cousins using deer antler. I think this collection includes blades, arrowheads and scrapers although happy to receive further identification help. . . . #flint #flinttools #workedflint #mesolithic #neolithic #hidescraper #arrowheads #blades #archaeology #lincolnshire #foundobjects #foundobjectart #fieldwalking #fieldwalkingfinds #flatlay #foundobjectflatlay #stonetools #stoneage #stoneagetools (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEEWO3yhvlR/?igshid=wxofy6gmtm95

Today's work involves some good old experimental archaeology. Maybe we should call it #ScrapingSunday ? . The scraping is to see what kinds of shapes, facets, and rounded edges can be made on a piece of ivory. I'm also experimenting with a few different burins to create grooves of different shapes. It's a nice simple experiment, and the main aim is to provide some evidence for a discussion point in my current paper. So far it's going very well! Once I've finished the experiments, I'll finish writing the final paragraphs of first rough draft. It's a very interesting paper, but still in the very preliminary stages. . I haven't had the chance to do experiments for a while, and it's lovely to be back doing something practical. I'll be getting back to my sewing experiments this month too, although I need to check how many I need to do and might have to prioritize some over others in order to avoid becoming overwhelmed with data. . Now, break-time is over. Back to the scraping and grooving! . #archaeology #archaeologist #experimentalarchaeology #phd #phdlife #ivory #stonetools #flinttools #prehistoric #prehistory #Sunday #weekend #norestforthewicked https://www.instagram.com/p/CJlCgLvrKUc/?igshid=im5d9e49zskh

A slightly different #WorkspaceWednesday today. . Now that we're in the midst of packing in preparation for moving house, my everyday crafting things have been packed away and my desk in the workshop is now free to be used for my experiments! I finally received the pieces of walrus ivory that I got in the Arctic last summer, so I can now start on my ivory needle production. . Considering my experience so far, I'm hoping that these needles will be a lot stronger than the bone ones I've been using. I'm curious to see how the usewear traces compare between the two materials. I'm also hoping that this fresher ivory will be easier to work than the weathered chunk that I found on the beach and brought back with me last summer... . Watch this space! . #PhD #PhDlife #experimentalarchaeology #archaeology #archaeologist #ivory #needles #Arctic #flint #flinttools https://www.instagram.com/p/B-tav42nXsk/?igshid=1o7arhblgk4vv
