watching spy kids for the first time in forever and got to the part where carmen and juni are using machete's mini plane to fly to floops castle

and while they're flying the lose control of the plane

and carmen makes a reference to kamikaze pilots because they're about to crash into the tower right before they drop into the ocean

and the funny thing about spy kids is

it came out in 2001

i went and looked at wikipedia page just to see when EXACTLY it came out and

it predates 9/11

so

isn't it weird how no one talks about how spy kids caused 9/11?

The inspiration for Floop's castle

Both the interior and exterior for Floop's castle was inspired and influenced by the works of Spanish architect Antoni Gaudí.

"I had been influenced by the dream-like quality of Gaudí ever since I started coming up with the script. In 1996, I traveled in Barcelona where I saw a lot of Gaudí architecture and was floored by the amount of creative abandon he brought to his structures. I wanted Floop to have these same surrealistic tendencies, to be the kind of guy who takes everyday objects and reconfigures them into something outrageous. This was the concept — and it really challenged my design team to create all the fun eye candy in Floop's Castle." - Robert Rodriguez on the source of inspiration for Floop's castle

Another influence for the "Floopian" look were the three-dimensionality of pop-up books.

"Our key word to guide all the designs was 'whimsical'. We certainly didn't want anything ordinary, but we also didn't want it anything too scary. The concept was to mix high design with 'Floopy' things that we fabricated." - set decorator Jeanette Scott on the props and furniture of Floop's castle

"I have a bit of a Peter Pan Complex so this was the perfect project for me. Having a child's outlook was required for this one. For us, the word Floop became a verb. We'd talk in terms of having to 'Floop it up' a little because nothing Floop has is normal or straight. You'll notice that there are no straight lines anywhere in the designs. Everything has a kink or curve to it." - production designer Cary White on the process of designing the castle's interior

The designers also thought on what sort of art that Floop would hang on his walls, eventually narrowing down to 3D paintings and portraits that mess with the audience's eyes.

"It fits in with the whole theme of fooling people and playing tricks. Everywhere you go there are pictures of things that might or might not be real." - Jeanette Scott on the portraits of Floop's castle

Several surreal paintings in particular were done by Truchas artist eRic Luplow.

Spy Kids - The Cave of Sleeping Sharks deleted scene

Most fans including myself would know and remember a short scene in Spy Kids involving Carmen and Juni scuba diving in an underwater cave to get inside Floop's castle. However, there is a longer version that was always planned to be in the movie, involving sleeping sharks.

In the original theatrical version and DVD release, Carmen utters “The water’s warmer in here”. Juni replies with “Oh. I just peed”. Carmen was grossed out, and Juni apologises. That is the scene most people remember.

In the Special Edition version and Blu-ray rerelease, Carmen and Juni have new lines, and there are sleeping sharks guarding the entrance, with a numbered password and surveillance cameras to boot.

The extended scene was always intended to be in the final cut (as the junior novelization, the 2000 revised draft, the How to be a Spy Activity Book, and the Meet the Spy Kids book includes/alludes to the scene), and it was Rodriguez's favourite scene in the movie.

When Spy Kids was in post-production, Rodriguez had to take the scene out because the special effects he envisioned would break the budget (which was over $35 million), having at least 65 special effects shots just in the scene alone, and he ran out of time to finish the scene.

Thus, in the theatrical release (and eventually the DVD release), it was replaced with a much-shorter, cut-down version of the scene that more people remember, shortening the film from 91 minutes to 88 minutes.

At first, Rodriguez was going to save the scene for the sequel, which became Spy Kids 2: The Island of Lost Dreams, but after Spy Kids became a surprise hit, Rodriguez was given the opportunity by Dimension Films to finish the scene the way he wanted, which was the result of Spy Kids: Special Edition, released in theatres August 8th, 2001, 4 months after the original release.

However, the Special Edition version would not be put in the DVD release that came out one month later, which is why people are more familiar with the shorter version of the scene that didn’t include sharks. Reason being because Rodriguez was saving it for a Special Edition DVD, which he teased a 2004 release on the DVD commentary of Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, and a Christmas 2005 release on the Latino Review website, right before the fifth anniversary of the franchise, neither of which materialised.

Since the Special Edition DVD never released both times and was presumably cancelled, the "Sleepy Sharks" scene was not rereleased, and hasn't be seen again for ten years, until on August 2nd, 2011, when it was reincluded in the Blu-ray rerelease of Spy Kids, for the franchise's tenth anniversary and coinciding with Spy Kids: All the Time in the World's release.

Aside from the clip below uploaded to YouTube, and also on pirated movie websites, the only way to watch the extended cut is through the Blu-ray rerelease, which you can still buy online as a sole disc or as part of a Blu-ray Triple Feature.

What are your Spy Kids headcanons? Those are VERY uncommon, rare even.

A lot of them are very very open and are kinda scraggly. Messy I'd say bc they arent full but I'll try my best to just throw a bunch :)

Demetra and The Guy act like siblings. They're both obviously NPCs and Demetra mentions meeting him.

Adding onto that, since The Guy is trapped in an endless cycle of just letting players into level 5 and then dying, Demetra makes fun of him for it bc she can go literally anywhere in the game.

Floop's Castle is always open to the Cortez family!!!! He's just so happy to have them, maybe they're like a second family to him :0?

Gary learned all of those dances bc of Carmen. (ty to that one fic on ffn that has my heart)

On a similar note, Juni knows ballet bc he was accidentally signed up for the wrong class but you KNOW he'd take full advantage of it anyway

Also Juni wears heelies everywhere. forget being practical. rolling around is way more fun (I will never get over them)

Don't ever leave Arnold and Demetra alone together. They will either start fighting or they will create chaos and neither is good.

Rebecca ropes Juni into playing pranks on Carmen. It doesn't take long for her to get them both back pretty good.

At that ideas post- Gurti and Carmen work very well together from the get go other than some coldness between them. Once they become full spies, theyd probably be the best team in the OSS.

Demetra is down to fight anywhere, any time. Meet her in the mcdonalds parking lot at midnight tomorrow.

Carmen still calls Juni names albeit a lot more playfully and is a lot nicer(?) abt it- Juni will retort easily. It's a game to see who can come up with something better without going too far. Carmen always wins.

You may be wondering "Why did you watch spy kids so much as a kid" well one it's because it was the best film ever and also constantly aired on tv. But also it was because of this man, whom contains the most gender I have ever seen in a dude.
