Fabulous floors! . Sometimes when you’re visiting an amazing site, you’re so busy admiring everything at eye level that you forget to look down. This was not at all the case at Pompeii! The floors were so well preserved that sometimes even the footpaths still had patterns and mosaics in them. . The most famous Roman mosaics are those depicting figures and scenes, but I want to show you some of the simpler designs we saw. I say simple - the geometric designs in some of them cause a bit of an optical illusion in some cases, which is very cool to see. Actually, the first image of a dog might have been intended as an optical illusion which, when seen head-on, have the impression of a 3D guard dog protecting the entrance of this building. . The other examples pictured here show the range of mosaic design, created from tiny cube-like blocks of materials such as natural stone, pottery sherds, bricks, and tiles, known in this context as "tesserae". . One of the suggested reasons why ancient Romans (which the citizens of Pompeii eventually became) decorated their walls, floors, and even ceilings to such an extent, is because they had very little furniture. Unlike our modern homes, where furniture is allocated to a particular purpose and thus assigned to (and used to define) a particular room, ancient Romans had more multi-purpose rooms. Obviously ones like the bath house were more limiting, but in general the "living" areas of a house, where the family played, ate, and received guests, would be open and uncluttered. In this way, the decoration was also used to define which parts of a house were open for guests, and which (non-decorated) rooms were meant only for private use by the family. . (As an interesting extra point, while looking up info for this post I came across the story of another beautifully preserved floor discovered under some vines near Verona in May this year! The Trinity Hospital, Leicester was founded in 1331 by the then Earl of Lancaster and Leicester as an almshouse for fifty poor and infirm persons. In 1653 the Leicester Corporation gave the hospital a great cauldron for cooking pottage. The cauldron, known as ‘The Porridge Pot’ is still there. The old building was taken over by De Montfort University and the Trinity Hospital opened a new home just down the road.
