Today marks my 20th anniversary of living in NYC. I’ve definitely been experiencing a nostalgic walk down memory lane thinking about everything that’s happened since I moved here from Boston. From my first duplex apartment at 92nd and 2nd where I lived with two guys, to many nights spent at Dorrian’s and Brother Jimmy’s and occasionally at Elaine’s to feel adult, to all the places that no longer exist like Barney’s, Bendel’s, Florent, 21 Club, and Takashimaya. Not to mention all the parties, events, fashion shows I’ve attended over the years and all the friends I’ve made and men I’ve dated. More importantly, I remember walked to my corporate office job one day and thinking about how I would never make more money until I figured out how to work for myself. Cut to late 2008 when I did just that and never looked back thanks to the blog I started in 2007. I also owe a lot to @lexonomstyle for giving me my first solo interior design project and @wesdelval for working with me on my first book that was published in 2012. It feels good to look back and see how many things I’ve accomplished and how much I owe to this city. It’s one of the reasons I never even thought about leaving like so many people have done in the past year. UCB revs up its gene therapy drive with Handl acquisition

UCB has made a new foray into the gene therapy space, buying fellow Belgium-based company Handl to get control of its adeno-associated virus (AAV) capsid delivery platform and two research programmes in neurodegenerative diseases.

The mid-sized pharma group has also signed a collaboration with Florida, US-based Lacerta Therapeutics, adding more AAV capsids – well established as a staple for delivering gene therapy sequences – as well as another gene therapy candidate.

Like many other pharma companies, UCB has been building a presence in gene therapy as the sector gathers momentum with more therapies getting regulatory approval.

The company says that is part of a shifting focus from “symptomatic treatments to disease modification and eventually towards a cure.”

In 2018, it bought Element Genomics – a spin-out of Duke University in the US – to add genome-editing technologies, and has also been growing its internal exercise at its Boston R&D hub, although so far it hasn’t advanced and gene therapies into clinical development.

Earlier this year, UCB also bought a 47-acre UK R&D campus from Eli Lilly, saying it intends to develop it as a hub for R&D in “gene therapies, translational medicine and antibody discovery.”

It is also in the process of constructing a €300 million biological manufacturing facility at its site in Braine l’Alleud, Belgium, to ensure the supply of medicines in clinical development.

“A vast array of diseases are amenable to gene therapy and UCB is embracing this modality to expand its capabilities and ultimately transform the lives of patients with severe diseases,” said the company in a statement.

It added that AAV-mediated gene therapy can “drive a fundamental change in how diseases are treated with the ability to remove or add disease-related proteins with a single treatment.”

Leuven-based Handl was formed last year by Prof Michael Linden – formerly vice president of gene therapy at Pfizer – and Florent Gros, who has held executive positions at Nestlé, Pasteur Merieux Connaught and Novartis.

Handl’s technology portfolio stems from licensing deals with Prof Linden’s former employer King’s College London, as well as Belgium’s KU Leuven, the Centre for Applied Medical Research in Spain, and the University of Chile.

UCB hasn’t revealed how much it is paying for Handl, or indeed the terms of its alliance with Lacerta, a University of Florida spin-out which also focuses on central nervous system diseases and will contribute research and manufacturing expertise.

Handl has also tapped into the development and manufacturing capabilities at Novasep, a contract manufacturing organisation (CMO) also based in Belgium.

Under the terms of that agreement, Novasep will develop and manufacture AAV vectors and supply drug substances to support Handl’s preclinical and clinical studies.

Okay so I had a strange dream last night. I was first staying with my family in Boston and then while I was flying… somewhere… this girl like pulled me from the plane and we both landed in the ocean close to LA. She ended up basically taking me hostage, all the while saying that she was “saving” me and “taking care of me”, and I was trying to escape somehow. I can’t remember what prompted this, but finally I was saved by Florent Dorin, Raphaël Descraques, and Slimane-Baptiste Berhoun… Somehow I think I had Raphaël’s number on my phone ahaha. It ended up that I crashed with them for night because I had a flight leaving from LAX the next day and it made more sense to stay than to go back to Boston.

Then I woke up. The last part of the dream was in French, I woke up speaking French. And ultimately it was a nice way to end the dream ahahah.

Last year, Berlin celebrated its 11th anniversary as a UNESCO City of Design. The party kicked off with an all-night design celebration, where studios, boutiques and agencies opened their doors, presenting their work to the public. As the German capital celebrated its creative culture, one couldn’t help but look closer at the overall local design scene that not only helped garner that title, but is constantly evolving.

Berlin is so much more than the Wall that divided it 40 years ago. Since the 1989 reunification, the city has gained a reputation for being “the New York of Europe.” It may not have the skyscrapers, but this cultural hub is filled with star talent, creative agencies and sleek architecture, as well as edgy public works that line the lively streets. As a cosmopolitan culture capital, some of the world’s edgiest design agencies are set up here. From pop-ups to poster paste-ups, a host of up-and-coming agencies are changing the city’s design scene. We spoke to some of the city’s key designers about their work, the urban fabric and what fuels their creativity.

The SLANG design studio was founded in 2000 by the French-American duo of Nat Hamon and Florent Moglia, who have brought fresh energy to the art world. “Our practice is often a mix of art and graphic design, exists in between cultures, and is expressed in three languages,” Hamon says. “Our focus lies in contemporary art and cultural exchange.”   With a studio located beside the former Berlin Wall’s no man’s land, it has become a go-to hub for visual art exhibitions—so much that you might call the duo artists themselves. The studio recently launched a photo exhibition and book of interviews with homeless youth, which was created in collaboration with a social organization, and it recently launched a magazine, The Scenic Route, which is based on the sense of touch. The duo has also been working toward the logo, communication materials and exhibition design of the “Politics of Sharing — On Collective Wisdom,” a forthcoming show at ifa-Gallery in Berlin and Stuttgart, as well as developing a website for the Goethe-Institut, which will be a blog platform for youth from Europe and Central Asia. “Berlin provides an inspiring environment,” Hamon says. “It’s a center of contemporary artistic activity and has an international, dynamic population.”

Connie Koch and Aline Ozkan first met at art school in Berlin before co-founding their agency in New York in 2000. Today, they have three offices (New York, Berlin and Zurich) and that international outlook has become a metaphor for their work. With clients including United Nations, as well as key players in the art and design worlds, “there’s a continuous exchange which keeps inspiring our colorful, bold and international style in a synergetic way,” Koch says. Some of their work includes a rebranding of Advertising Week Europe’s Official Guide for the 2016 event in London, and Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics, one of the world’s biggest fashion textile trade shows. Koch, who lived in Berlin from 1990–1995, has seen the city change since she moved back.   “I am still a bit melancholic regarding the golden days right after the Wall came down,” she says. “These were truly free, creative times! There was a big music and club scene, but there was no real commerce. That has changed, along with the many new arrivals from all over the world. You can see things pick up a bit in speed, becoming a bit more like New York—in certain parts of the city, that is.” AHOY is based in the district of Prenzlauer Berg, which is lined with cafés and boutiques. “You just step out of the building and you are surrounded by a very casual, yet refined vibe,” Koch says. “I guess that spirit resonates in our designs as well.”

This year, we can expect to see the relaunch of their blog and a brand new print magazine, as well as a new loft concept space in Kreuzberg. “Berlin is becoming more and more international with all the people moving into the city,” Bergler says. “There is still a lot of space and freedom of expression. Those people and the spaces are very inspiring and bring in a lot of input.”

Famed designer Charles Eames once said, “The details aren’t the details—they make the design,” a motto that upstruct lives by.   “We’re not happy before everything is perfect,” says Toni Harzer, who founded upstruct in 2005. Since working with Lars Trautmann in 2008, the team, which also works with freelance designers and an intern, focuses on web design, branding, graphic design and illustration. The studio’s projects range from film festival posters in Norway to software interfaces and working with JONES Ice Cream, a locally operated food truck. What sets it apart: The team creates their own annual, limited-edition screen-printed calendar, which is essentially a work of art in itself. But while Berlin is a creativity-fueled city filled with artists, the studio makes one clear distinction: Design is about solving problems. “‘We’re not only artists’ is one of our strongest competences,” Harzer says.   The city drives them to stay motivated. “A lot of things are happening in Berlin—that’s why you see and experience a lot of impressions—but this also means we have to compete with a lot of other great studios and designers,” Harzer says. “There are many startups and people starting projects and searching for design in Berlin. Somehow the indication of ‘design from Berlin’ seems to make the things more interesting for people. So generally, we think Berlin is a great place to be a designer.”

After doing projects abroad from the likes of Cairo and London, Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma founded this design agency in 2008. With a focus on type and bilingual design, it spawned from their first big project, a book called Arabesque 2: Graphic Design from the Arab World and Persia, published by Gestalten.   Then, as Wittner recalls, “we sort of fell into being self-employed,” and now work in a Kreuzberg studio, which is part of a building filled with artists, dancers and designers. There are so many creative people in Berlin that Wittner calls it a “creative ghetto.” “The Berlin design scene has grown immensely over the past years; sometimes it’s almost too much,” he says, adding that it “has for sure brought forward some great designers and fantastic work.” Their client list includes L’Oréal, Heineken, Nike and the Victoria & Albert Museum, but more recently, they’ve worked on the lookbooks for fashion designers Michael Sontag and Vivian Graf and taught a class in editorial design at the University of the Arts in Berlin, where they created a 128-page prototype book with 19 design studios in 10 different languages.

Protecting our oceans safeguarding our ecosystem

Patricia Zobel de Ayala, better known as Patsy to her friends, is the very active Honorary Consul of The Philippines in Monaco, and a passionate of diving and water sports in general, who firmly believes in the need to protect our oceans. On June 27, 2017, Patsy, in partnership with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco unveiled the exhibition Tubbataha, the Philippines’ UNESCO Marine World Heritage Site, in the presence of HSH Prince Albert II, who champions ocean conservation and the safeguarding of our ecosystem.

This first-ever Philippine event in Monaco was made possible thanks the invaluable contributions of Robert Calcagno, Florent Favier and the staff of the Oceanographic Museum, David Doubilet, Jennifer Hayes, Tet Lara and Marissa Floirendo, and Angelique Songco of the Tubbataha Reefs. Also present at the event were Christina Rola from the Philippine Embassy in Paris, and other diplomats from various countries, conservationists, and philanthropists like Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, who made a donation to the Tubbataha Reefs.

Coral, heart of the ocean

The privileged guests had the chance to watch a chronicle of the exploration expedition of HSH Prince Albert II to Tubbataha and Cagayancillo, in April 2016, where he dived in the natural coral reefs of Tubbataha.

The objectives were twofold: to place Argos tracking tags on two marine turtles, as part of the protection program for these animals, threatened by accidental fishing, initiated by the Oceanographic Institute; and highlight the importance of the marine protected areas, seen as a rebirth site for the oceans to regenerate.

In the heart of the Sulu Sea lays the only purely Marine World Heritage Site in Southeast Asia today, the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park.  It is located in the Philippines, which is part of the Coral Triangle, center of global marine biological diversity in the world.  This 970 square kilometer natural park is the largest marine protected area in the Philippines, comprising over 50% of all no-take zones in the country.

Tubbataha was inscribed in the World Heritage list in December 1993 because of its exceptional natural beauty, its role in on-going ecological and biological processes, and its significance to in situ conservation.  Studies have shown that fish and coral larvae from Tubbataha enrich fisheries in the surrounding areas.  This ecological function is vital to the food security of the Philippines.

Almost 200 species of endangered marine life find their home in Tubbataha.  The Park is a haven to 72% of all coral genera found worldwide.  It is one of very few strongholds of seabirds, marine turtles, and sharks in the region.  To pass on its outstanding universal value to future generations is shared our obligation to the world. Robert Calcagno said: “It is the first reserve created 30 years ago and later reinforced by the Philippines Government. Today the reefs are considered as the richest in the world in terms of flora and fauna.”

Tubbataha, a national treasure

Also a main feature at the exhibit is a video documentary produced by the Philippines’ top underwater videographer and cinematographer, Marissa Floirendo, similarly entitled, Tubbataha, A National Treasure. The video has the distinction of being one of the Choice Selection at the 2017 Wildlife Conservation Film Festival in New York City.

Since it was discovered by divers in the late 1970s Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park (TRNP) has been considered one of the most extraordinary dive sites in the world, a dream trip for most scuba divers. Recently, it was ranked eighth best dive site in the world by the CNN travel website.

Exhibit will travel from Monaco to The Philippines

The exposition that will be open to the public until August 31, 2017, features large scale stunning underwater and topside photographs of world renowned National Geographic photographers and Rolex partners, David Doubilet and Jennifer Hayes, and award winning photographer and featured artist of the book Tubbataha, A National Treasure, Maria Teresa “Tet” Lara.   Some of the photos in the exhibit include close up of a Red Spotted Blenny, half-and-half of Brown Bobbies, seascapes, and schooling fish. The public will be able to watch the documentary Corail, Coeur de l’Ocean (Coral, Heart of the Ocean) via virtual reality helmets.

The exhibit is expected to make its debut in the Philippines in late 2017 through the Ayala Foundation and the Ayala Malls. Requests to showcase the photographs in London and France have been received. Finally, the prints will be auctioned by the Tubbataha Management Office in 2018 to raise funds for the protection of the Park.

The photographers

David Doubilet and Jennifer Hayes are a photographic team for National Geographic Magazine focusing on ocean environments. Their photography is a universal language to create a visual voice for a fragile and finite world. They believe images have the power to inform, illuminate celebrate, honour and most importantly, create change.

David Doubilet began photographing a dark green Atlantic when he first put his Brownie Hawkeye camera in a rubber anesthesiologist’s bag at the age of twelve, receiving his first National Geographic assignment while at Boston University.  Jennifer’s passion for the study and conservation of primitive fishes led to graduate degrees in zoology, marine ecology, later evolving into photography and storytelling to document her findings.

Assignments have taken this team into the vast Coral Triangle from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea, beneath into Africa’s Okavango Delta, under oil and gas rigs in the Gulf of Mexico, into the world of ice in Antarctica, Arctic and most recently Eastern Greenland where glaciers are retreating at a rapid pace. Their most recent collaboration has taken them throughout the Philippines, an ocean nation and cornerstone of the coral triangle.

Marissa Floirendo is one of the Philippines’ premiere cinematographers, having won several awards from the local film industry. She was also one of the country’s pioneering underwater filmmakers, among the first to document its rich marine life.
 She is a director of the Antonio O. Floirendo Foundation, and spearheaded the publication of the very first coffee table book on the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, “Tubbataha: A National Treasure,” released in December 2016.
 Marissa has been diving in the Tubbataha reefs for almost three decades, and has been a witness to its struggles, its survival, and its rebirth.
 With the foundation, Marissa produced the video on Tubbataha, using her collected footage and images, to promote the conservation of this extraordinary natural wonder and pride of the Philippines.

Tet Lara is a photographer, businesswoman, and a staunch advocate for the preservation of the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park, Philippines’ premiere marine ecosystem. She has compiled over 10 years’ worth of photographs appearing in the book “Tubbataha: A National Treasure.”  Tet has won awards in local and international underwater competitions, such as Best of Show at the Australasia Underwater Festival 2011. She is currently a volunteer speaker who uses her work to create awareness for the continued preservation of Tubbataha.

Monaco Explorations – The legacy goes on

The interesting Tubbataha exhibition is the perfect prelude to the Monaco Explorations, a scientific program that will be launched on July 27, 2017, with the departure of the transoceanic scientific vessel Yersin, for a 3-years long navigation over the oceans of the world with dozens of researchers on board.

An important expedition to be revived by HSH Prince Albert II, following the tradition of the marine explorations lead by Prince Alber 1st, founder of the Oceanographic Museum, and continued by Commanding Office Cousteau who was its director during three decades.
