Title: After Club Hours
Pairing: Mitsuya X Reader
Summary: You haven’t been acting your usual self so mitsuya asked you to stay after club hours to talk
(Fluff) (a little bit of teasing)
The soft hum of sewing machines fills the room, broken only by the occasional burst of laughter from the girls clustered around Mitsuya. He’s helping one with a pleat, complimenting another on her fabric choice — calm, patient, his usual self.
Effortlessly adored.
Y/N walks in late. Her expression is neutral. Almost too neutral.
She crosses the room without a word, drops her bag with a soft thud, and sits at her usual table. Doesn’t acknowledge anyone. Not even him.
Her fingers reach for her fabric, but she fumbles the threading. Again. And again. Her movements are stiff, rushed. Nothing like her usual steady hands.
Mitsuya notices.
At first, he says nothing. Just watches. Watches how she keeps sighing under her breath, how her eyes flick briefly toward the group gathered around him, then quickly back to her work. Watches how she rolls her eyes when one of the girls calls him by his first name with a giggle. How her jaw ticks when another tries to hand him a canned drink like they’ve known each other forever.
Then her machine jams. The thread catches, loops unevenly. Her hands clench at the sides of the fabric, and for a second, it looks like she might snap.
He moves.
Crosses the room in a few quiet steps.
No words.
He stands behind her now, close enough for her to catch the faint scent of his cologne — clean, woodsy, familiar. His hand reaches out, calm and sure, and rests gently over hers. His fingers guide hers through the tangled thread, slow and careful.
His voice is low, barely above a whisper, right by her ear.
“You’ve been off lately.”
Her breath stutters, caught somewhere between her chest and throat. She doesn’t look at him. Doesn’t dare. She focuses on the cloth instead — eyes sharp, hands suddenly too warm.
He leans a little closer, voice quieter this time.
“You’re not clumsy. You’re not this… tense.”
Pause.
“So what’s wrong with you, recently?”
Still, no answer.
Just the sound of her breath and the fabric crinkling between her fingers.
He exhales, quiet but heavy. Something about her silence clearly gnaws at him.
“Stay back after club. I wanna talk to you.”
Her jaw tightens. Her eyes narrow at the fabric. Her ears are burning.
She mutters, brushing him off without looking:
“I’m fine. Just tired.”
But her voice is tight. Brittle. Like she’s holding something back with both hands.
He doesn’t push. Just lingers a moment longer, his hand warm over hers — grounding, steady — before stepping away and returning to his table.
But the ghost of his touch stays behind.
And she hates how her heartbeat refuses to settle.
The loudest noise in the room now is the ticking of the wall clock. The once-busy sewing club room feels strangely empty with just the two of them left — chairs pushed in messily, threads and pins scattered across tables, bits of fabric fluttering in the air conditioning.
Y/N sits at her table, arms crossed, pretending to scroll through her phone but really just listening.
Waiting.
Mitsuya is silent too, standing across the room like he wants to say something but can’t find the words.
Then he clears his throat.
“Hey… give me like, one minute. I’ll be right back.”
Before she can even ask where he’s going, he slips out the door.
Y/N frowns. “What the hell…?”
Ten seconds of silence pass. Then thirty. Then two minutes. She gets bored quickly.
Naturally, her curiosity kicks in.
She glances around the room, then stands, slowly walking around with her hands behind her back, humming faintly. She pokes at a pincushion. Opens a drawer. Tugs at a stuck cabinet. Finds a tiny candy wrapper and snorts.
Then—
On the far side of the room, behind some fabric bolts and half-finished mannequins—
A plain, beat-up black sketchbook.
Obviously, she opens it.
And there it is.
Pages and pages of intricate designs flowing skirts, embroidered sleeves, structured collars. But one page in particular catches her eye: a sketch of a dress, elegant and unique, but drawn with notes like “delicate neckline,” “adjust shoulder for Y/N’s frame,” and…
Her name is literally scribbled in the margins.
Her eyes widen. “What the—”
“You’re really nosy, huh?”
She jumps — actually yelps — and spins around to find Mitsuya standing behind her with a bag of snacks and the smuggest smile on his face.
“You scared the hell out of me!” she snaps, hand on her chest.
“Are you trying to give me a heart attack?”
He laughs — full, warm, a little smug.
“You’re the one snooping around like a cartoon raccoon.”
She glares at him, cheeks heating, but he holds up a drink and a little red bean cake like a peace offering.
“Here. I figured maybe you’d calm down if you weren’t hungry.”
She eyes it warily, takes it anyway.
“…Thanks.”
They both sit down, this time side by side. She sets the sketchbook on the table without a word, but it sits there like a secret between them.
After a pause, he glances at it.
“That one — I’ve been meaning to make it for a while. Just haven’t had the right person to try it on.”
He pauses, then smirks lightly.
“Until now.”
She turns slowly toward him, eyes narrowed.
“So let me get this straight. You lured me here with vague emotional concern just to ask if I’d be your mannequin?”
He snorts.
“What? No! I mean, I do want you to be my fit model, but that’s not why I asked you to stay back.”
She raises an eyebrow, unimpressed but flustered.
“You sure?”
He leans back a little, eyes on hers now — not teasing this time, more serious.
“I’ll tell you. But while I’m measuring you.”
She blinks.
“That sounds like a threat.”
He chuckles, rising and grabbing the measuring tape from his desk.
“It’s a promise.”
The last trace of daylight casts golden streaks across the desks as Mitsuya rolls the measuring tape between his fingers, calm as ever. Meanwhile, Y/N is trying not to combust.
“Stand up.”
His voice is smooth, casual.
“Arms out. I won’t take long.”
She obeys, stiffly.
“You’ve done this before, right?” she asks, trying to sound nonchalant.
“Hundreds of times,” he replies, looping the tape around her shoulders.
“Not usually with someone glaring at me the whole time, though.”
She frowns. “I wasn’t glaring.”
He hums, lips quirking.
“Mhm.”
His hands move to her back, warm and steady as he adjusts the tape. His breath brushes her neck when he leans forward to read the numbers.
“You’ve been clumsy lately,” he says quietly.
“Messing up seams. Dropping pins. Zoning out.”
She shrugs. “I haven’t been sleeping well.”
He doesn’t reply right away. His fingers graze the side of her waist, moving deliberately as he measures her torso. The silence thickens.
“Do you not like some of the girls in the club?” he asks next, voice low, tone unreadable.
Y/N’s eyes flick to the side. “Not… anyone in particular.”
He leans in again, just slightly, until his voice brushes against her ear.
“You’ve been staring at me.”
The words are quiet. Not teasing. Not mocking. Just steady. Certain.
“More than usual.”
She stiffens. Breath caught. Her fingers twist at the hem of her sleeve.
“I’m in the same room as you. What do you want me to do, wear blinders?”
His lips twitch.
“You’re not usually this sharp with me.”
She exhales through her nose. Her tone flat, borderline annoyed.
“Maybe I’m tired of seeing your little fan club cling to you every five seconds.”
There’s a pause. One heartbeat. Two.
Then:
“Ah.” His smirk is audible now.
“So you admit it.”
Immediately, she tenses.
“I didn’t say anything.”
He pulls back slowly, walking to the front to check the numbers he just wrote down.
Then — he glances over his shoulder with that smirk.
“Y/N,” he says, dragging her name out just enough to make her want to walk straight into traffic,
“do you get jealous when some of the girls have my attention?”
Silence.
Utter, deafening silence.
She blinks. Once. Twice.
Then:
“What kind of question is that?”
She scoffs, looking everywhere but at him.
“No. Obviously not. You can talk to whoever you want. Why would I care?”
He’s next to her again now, measuring her hips. His knuckles graze her thigh as he adjusts the tape around her lower waist. His voice is lower this time.
“You think I talk to them the way I talk to you?”
She looks at him. Slowly.
Eyes narrowed, chest tight.
“You flirt with me?”
He leans closer, expression unreadable but eyes sharp.
“Do I?”
She goes silent again.
And for a second, he just watches her. Watches the tiny twitch in her jaw, the way her breathing picks up. The way her hands fidget with the hem of her sleeve like she doesn’t know what to do with them.
He finally murmurs:
“You act like you don’t care. But you do. I can feel it.”
She glares weakly, cheeks flushed.
“You’re annoying.”
He just grins.
“And you’re a terrible liar.”
They stay like that for a beat, and then Mitsuya finishes noting the last measurement and rolls the tape around his fingers with practiced ease.
He glances at the neatly coiled tape in his hand, then meets her eyes.
“You’ll tell me eventually,” he says quietly, voice soft but certain.
“I’m very patient.”
“So I guess we’re done, I’ll get going now. See ya—”
Before she can pivot away, he moves in one fluid motion — one hand slams against the wall beside her head, the other on the opposite side, trapping her. His knee slides between her legs, just resting there, a silent reminder of how close they are. The cool plaster presses against her back. Her breath hitches.
“Mitsuya,” she says, voice tight. “What are you doing?”
He’s calm. Always calm.
“Making sure you don’t leave before we finish talking.”
His eyes flick down to her lips, then back up to her eyes, reading every flicker of her expression.
She tries to steel herself — push him away. Instead, her hands press weakly against his chest, feeling the firmness of his uniform shirt.
“I’m not going anywhere. Not until I know exactly what’s on your mind.”
Her pulse pounds so loudly she’s sure he can hear it. She struggles for composure:
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she lies.
He smirks.
He leans forward, just enough that his breath brushes her hair.
He sinks his knee a fraction closer — gentle, unwavering pressure.
“You’d be surprised how honest you get when you can’t run away.”
She swallows hard, breath caught in her throat. His hands tighten just a hint on the wall, and the air between them vibrates with unspoken confession.
He brushes a stray lock of hair from her face, fingers lingering near her jaw like he’s about to say something else — or do something else — when—
BAM.
The clubroom door slams open, the silence shatters.
“Oh—uh—sorry!” Takemitchy blurts, stumbling halfway inside, hand still on the sliding door.
Peh-yan’s right behind him. “Bro, what did we just walk into—”
Mitsuya doesn’t flinch. Just sighs, long-suffering, and pulls back ever so slightly — hands still braced on the wall, but his knee lowers. The tension in the room deflates like a sad balloon.
Y/N’s eyes go wide, face flushed from neck to forehead. She practically shoves Mitsuya back with both hands this time, glaring daggers.
“What the hell, Mitsuya,” she hisses under her breath. “You trapped me.”
He blinks innocently. “You weren’t exactly struggling.”
“Why are you two even here?!” Y/N snaps.
Takemitchy rubs the back of his neck awkwardly.
“I just—I had to ask Mitsuya something about uniforms, but uh… I’ll come back later. Much, much later.”
Peh’s already pulling him out by the collar, mouthing my bad and mumbling something about timing and how he owes Mitsuya a soda for ruining that moment.
The door clicks shut behind them.
Silence.
Y/N’s still facing away, hands covering her face now.
“They’re never letting me live this down.”
Mitsuya crosses his arms, expression way too satisfied for her liking.
“I don’t see the issue.”
She turns around slowly, eyes narrowed.
“I swear if you say something smug—”
“I wasn’t going to.” He shrugs, stepping back toward her, hands in his pockets now.
“But if I were… I’d say it’s not my fault you look cute when you’re cornered.”
“Mitsuya.”
His lips twitch.
“I’m just saying,” he adds,
“next time we get interrupted, maybe don’t look so into it.”
Her mouth opens. Closes.
She throws a spool of thread at his head.
He catches it effortlessly.

“Kang Subin, queer and honorable member of the divorced parents club.” Is how your roommate introduces herself friday night, pointing to the latter as the reason she is only now, a month after classes started, arriving to campus and the city in general.
She says her dad insisted on doing a year abroad as he did, assisting to his Alma Mater and hopefully fall in love with the city to move full time with him. And she did love it… a little too much. She admits the change of scenery was liberating, she could be a totally different Subin from the one in Seoul, and sadly that meant neglecting her notes and putting at risk her art history degree.
You're glad to note she will be joining you ( and some of your friends on occasion ) for classes, since she managed to keep her notes high enough to not lose her first semester. And then you spend the weekend getting to know each other, practically becoming friends overnight. Subin says it must be a you thing, and shaking your head no, you confess essentially begging the administration for a roommate because you're stuck with silly boys and all girls hate you because you aren't cool like them. She laughs, asks if that means the plan is making everyone hate her too and be stuck with you. And you freak out a little, but her laugh keeps flowing across the dormroom and you know she is joking; you know that things would be fine.
Monday arrives and between classes, you continue to give Subin small tours of the campus, mostly the art building and where all the vending machines are.
“There's more than I thought, could you make me a map?” She jokingly asks.
“I'll ask Jungkook for the one we made last semester,” you know he has it because it was offered to Yoongi before.
“Hey, y/n!” calls Taehyung, appearing at the other end of the hall with Yoongi, and when he asks “you got some gum?”, you know they were just on a smoke break.
“Oh, hi, Tae. Nice to see you.” Sarcastic tone all over it, “are you having a nice morning?”
He rolls his eyes and Yoongi laughs at his side.
“Sorry, I'm actually not. And I'm running late,” still you give him a look and as a little kid he repends. “Hi, you guys look pretty today, as alway.” He adds before you can argue anything, and only then Subin chuckles, understanding this must be part of your dynamic. “Do you happen to have some gum for us, your lovely friends?”
“Yes, actually.” Taking one strap off, you move your backpack to your front, looking for the little package they keep stealing from. “Here,” you hand one wrapper to Tae, who starts running in the other direction immediately, screaming how much he loves you. And a “nice to meet you!” to Subin.
Everyone laughs, Yoongi turning back in your direction after Taehyung disappears down the hallway.
“You want one?” You ask and before being able to stop yourself, you add, “Is cherry, though”
“Of course it is,” he smiles and you look away, pretending it's only to search for another one to offer Subin. Memories of friday’s night invading your psyche and shyness your whole body.
Well, that's your own fault.
“Thank you,” she says, looking at the two of you while unwrapping it. “I'm Subin, by the way, the new roommate.”
“Oh, she actually found one!”
“Just hoping she doesn't abandon me too,” you pout and Subin wraps one arm around yours.
“Never.”
“Yoongi,” He introduces, thumb pointing to himself and then behind, “And that was Taehyung, but I guess you'd meet the whole squad later.”
“Ah, yeah. I've been told she collects cute guys.”
“Did someone actually say that?” Yoongi asks when you're not even surprised.
“Yeah and when I asked about girls she looked relieved,” subin goes on, “I actually wanted to know, you know.”
Yoongi and you laugh, “someone doesn't like competition,” both say in unison.
Tumblr media
“I told you, they lied.”
“Well, I can't really say that yet. I've to look first,” Subin insists, walking through the cafeteria's door. And it doesn't bother you because it comes from a place of curiosity and not horniness. No shame to anyone, your friends are hot, but you've known them for so long and know they have other great attributes that sometimes it feels superficial and it bothers you.
Besides, as a friend, you need to keep their egos just high enough to be healthy for everyone involved.
“Listen, kids,” calling for the table's attention, you stand in front of them, “this is Subin, my—”
“New roommate?” Asks Jungkook, remembering the text you sent, and you nod excitedly.
“That's Jungkook, he is in music and sports.”
“Which ones?”
“All. Some. We don't have time for that,” you joke, but only continue with the rest of his introduction after the youngest clarifies is soccer and box this year. “Oh, he also takes an art class with Taehyung and I, and now you, this semester. You know Tae from earlier, the one who keeps stealing my gum.”
“You're the one that tells me to not show up to class with cigarette breath!” He pushes back against accusations.
“I think she wants you to buy your own,” Jimin suggests.
“Or quit,” adds Hobi and the table laughs even more.
“That’s Hobi, the group's mom.” Tae offers after.
“Does that make Mai the dad?” Jungkook asks, with a serious expression on his face.
“I'm telling her so,” Yoongi says, already phone in hand and texting his best friend.
“You'll have to meet Mai later, she is great,” you continue, “but Tae is in arts. And Hobi and Jimin, are both dancers,” index finger pointing at their direction as you say each name, “and well, you already know that's Yoongi, he is in music too.”
“And the last new guy, right?” Subin remembers from your talk earlier after she met him for the first time, “I guess I took your title.”
“Are we enemies now?” He jokes, “I was about to offer you my chair, but now I don't know.”
Again, laughs all around and before anyone can think about the sitting arrangement too seriously, Jungkook is standing up, saying he needs to go back to the house before his next class.
“Oh, you are the biker from friday!” Subin exclaims as Jungkook’s helmet comes into view, everyone turning to look at her, “can't believe I forgot to ask you.”
And then five pairs of eyes are on you, all but Yoongi's, since he doesn't need an explanation.
“...What?” Asks Tae, finally.
“Had to call her to my rescue because I lost my key and from the hallway's window I saw someone drop her off on a motorcycle,” she explains, “that's when the girl told me about you collecting cute guys.”
“But that wasn't me,” says Jungkook.
“Yeah, you weren't with us that night. We were all at the house, so who was it?” Ask Jimin, and the curiosity in his voice makes you nervous. You have never lied to them, and starting right now without preparation is terrifying.
However nothing compares to the feeling on your stomach when Yoongi answers, “it was me, actually.” And without a beat, your friends are looking at him now, “What?”
“You what now?” Mister interrogation Tae goes on, “Why were you together? What time was it? Was it late?”
“You were alone? Why?” Asks Hobi.
“We can't hang out now?” You ask back, wasn't he who set you up in the first place? And yes, it didn't turn out the way they planned it, but wasn't the whole premise to get to know Yoongi?
“Not what I meant,” he corrects, “Just… you didn't say anything.”
“Well, you guys canceled, what were we supposed to do? Not do anything just because you weren't with us?” Yoongi answers before you.
“And we just hang out, you know, eat junk food and chat. Nothing to write home about.”
“Aww,” coos Jungkook, sliding his arm over your shoulders, “does that mean you missed us? You really love us, uh?” you pull back, sticking your tongue at him and pushing him towards the exit, telling him to hurry because if he is late to class you aren't covering for him again.
Thankfully, that's enough to get them off your back and Subin’s arrival provides better entertainment through the lunch hour, as your friends don't hold back on their questions to get to know her. And you're glad they seem to like her as much as you do.
“So… should I've not mentioned the bike thing?” worries Subin later, when everyone has left and is only her and Yoongi at the table.
“Don't worry about it.” He reassures her, offering a tangerine slice when she doesn't return the smile. “Seriously.”
Is not her fault, he thinks. He can't blame the guys either for wondering and going into big brother mode as soon as they hear you're hanging out with someone, since the prevalence of that is not the best right now. And although he does feels bad about keeping things a secret from them, mostly Hoseok, who Yoongi himself give the “you better be careful with what you do with my best friend” talk, it consoles him a bit to know that the both of you are on the same page with what you have.
Maybe if they knew it wouldn't be a big deal, he thinks. Better him than anyone else, right?

Putting away your phone and with the excuse of going to the bathroom before class, Subin and Tae follow their journey to the second floor without you and without suspecting anything. As you walk in front of one of the classrooms, a hand wraps around your forearm and pulls you in.
“What th—!” scream is interrupted when you recognize Yoongi. “You almost gave me a heart attack! I could've punched you.” And with adrenaline still running through your body, you actually push his shoulder with less force than you first intended.
“Ouch.” He rubs the place you hit, dramatically, as he explains, “Sorry, I panicked. There were people around and I didn't want to scream your name”
“Yeah, we should be careful after what happened at the cafeteria. Good save, by the way.”
“You own me,” he quickly returns.
“I do not,” you deny, crossing your arms, “You were the one insisting on going into the parking lot, I told you to leave me at the gate.”
“Well, forgive me for being a gentleman.”
You laugh, “and modest.”
Yoongi smiles, relaxing his body against the wall beside the door, “are you telling Subin about us?” he asks before you can question him about why he asked to meet.
Uncrossing your arms, you fiddle with your nails instead, scratching the acrylic paint off of them. “What is your opinion on that?”
“You can't answer a question with a question, miss.”
“Well… I don't know.” Is your final answer after a few seconds of silence. “She is cool and I really think we’re going to be friends and maybe I can gossip to her about you.”
He chuckles at that.
“And also she said sorry and asked if it was supposed to be a secret.”
“Really?” Yoongi sounds surprised, “She asked me that too earlier and I told her to not worry.”
“I feel bad about it because it seems like she is actually worried she messed up,” you share, “maybe I should just come clean. Only to her, at least. But of course not, if you don't want to.”
“No, it's okay. I think is good you have someone to talk to. And she seems nice.”
You nod in agreement, relieved you don't have to start hiding things from Subin as soon as you two met.
“Also,” Yoongi goes on, holding your hips and bringing you closer to him. You allow him to without much thinking. “It was nothing to write home about?”
“What?”
“Friday night, you said that earlier.”
“Did your ego get hurt?” You tease.
“No. But I didn't know you were a liar.” he throws back and you laugh. “I'm going to call you Pinocchio now.”
At that, you gasp, “stop giving me nicknames!”
And your attempt to pull away is just that, an attempt, because between laughs he holds you closer. “But is funny. And all of them are true.”
“They aren't.”
“Are so.”
“I don't like you.”
“That's not what I got from friday.”
“Yoongiii—.” you gasp again, his laugh louder this time.

Wanting a clarification stops him from dumping his phone back into the duffle bag and so, throwing the strap over his shoulder, he makes his way over to Chris and other teammates.
“Are you ready to go?” His roommate asks, and Yoongi nods, “good, I'm just waiting for Ha-ri.”
“Hey!” As they turn around, it is not difficult to recognize her as one of the cheerleaders since she is carrying her pom-poms and all, but is only as they continue talking that Yoongi realizes who she is, “sorry, I was saying goodbye to the girls and planning for next practice.”
“Don't worry, babe.”
“You must be Yoongi, hi,” she waves her free hand enthusiastically enough the pendant on her bracelet makes a jiggly sound, catching his attention “welcome to the university. And the team. Go, Bears!”
She seems nice, Yoongi thinks, “Go, bears!” first in the air, he chuckles in response before they all make their way to the parking lot and to Chris’s car.
The drive home is short and filled with questions about his last school and the reason he transferred, which Yoongi manages to give simple and vague answers that satisfy Ha-ri’s curiosity. It definitely helps that he has been questioned about it more than once the last few weeks, giving him more than one chance to practice before today.
The more weeks pass, the less people ask. And soon the mystery of his arrival is pushed to the side as people decide to talk about his accomplishments in the basketball games.
Every now and then someone recognizes him as an ex Tiger's player, and asks why he changed teams, but before anything can get to deep, a “well, now you are on the right team,” or something alike is thrown his way and he couldn't be more glad for the rivalry between the universities.
For what is worth, the change has proven to have been a good decision. Of course he is nostalgic for the past and he misses hanging out with Mai more often, but he has friends, basketball and music. He has even been planning to perform at school events with Jungkook as he did with Jay back then.
It feels like he is starting to build a new life, and it wasn't as difficult as his brain told him it could be.
With chuseok around the corner the university starts to plan the events for the weekend and some professors feel generous enough to give extra credits for participation. Others just used it as an excuse to make the assignments related to it, that's his and Jungkook’s case.
Yours is the first one, because getting a good grade for hanging out with your friends sounds too good to pass out. That's why for the last few days you have been following them around taking pictures and notes, preparing your article about their performance Saturday night.
“Are you done?” Yoongi asks from his spot at the end of the bed when you take the headphones off, the ones he made you wear so he wouldn't have to listen to himself on the interview recording.
“Yep. I only need Kook's side and I'm done,” end of the sentence elongates a bit, arms in the air as you stretch your back.
“How long for him to be here? I need him to go over something before he eats and gets a food coma.”
“I'm glad you're already prepared for that,” you giggle, “Because he is not even seeing my texts.”
“He is still busy?”
“Yeah, kissing someone for sure. Does he think I don't have things to do too?”
“Like making out with someone too?” he jokes, putting his guitar down on the bed, deciding to take a break too.
“Why? Are you jealous?” you tease, trying not to laugh and is surprising when you're met with a serious expression as you spin around on his desk chair.
“I thought the rule was to tell if there were other people.”
“I'm just kidding,”
“Wow, a comedian.” he rolls his eyes, and you know he is only pretending to be annoyed.
So, you push. “I'm funnier than you, don't get mad.”
“Cocky.”
“What, you don't find confidence attractive?”
“Oh, I find a lot of things about you attractive.”
Touche; you think as a smirk appears proudly on his face and makes you turn around, shy reaction at the security of this voice.
And he laughs. Of course.
“Shut up, Yoongi.”
“If you want to kiss me, just do it,” he only has to stretch a bit to pull on the chair, making you turn to him again and bringing you close.
And you do kiss him.
Not only to erase his stupid and attractive gummy smile, but also because you've missed it.
With projects and exams, with Yoongi not only being in a different major but also in his third year, hanging out only the two of you hasn't happened as much.
You don't mind. You understand that is not a priority and there is something relaxing about it being an unspoken agreement, something that you truthly appreciate.
But you would be lying if you said that you didn't miss Yoongi's lips against yours and the way his hand cups your cheek, still gentle as he tries to lead the kiss.
Looking for closeness, your hand finds balance on his tight, making you contemplate ditching the comfiness of the desk chair for a sit on his lap.
“Is pizza night, baby!” breaks through the house before you can make another move, making you jump and pull away on instinct. Moving out of Yoongi's reach, even hitting the desk with the back of the chair as you stand up in record time.
“Careful,” he murmurs and you don't understand why he isn't freaking out. Even dears to chuckle.
“Min, come out!” another voice calls out.
“That's not Jungkook,” you say as a matter of fact, your brain still in shock.
“I'm starting to think he stood us up.” He stands up, looking at his phone still without texts from the younger guy, “Wanna meet my roommates? They have pizza, apparently.”
And your empty stomach makes the executive decision to hide your shame, and disappointment, in exchange for some food.
You're introduced to Jin first, who introduces Namjoon while taking the knife out of his hand with a “let hyung do it.”
“I swear he never lets me hold a knife for more than five seconds,” he says and you find it adorable, but Namjoon seems genuinely confused and maybe a bit hurt by it.
You wonder what more there's to that. But before you can ask anything, a third roommate comes out of the kitchen, “Is for your own good and the wellbeing of everyone involved,” he says, making your whole body tense as the familiar voice rings through your ears.
“That's Chris.” Jin says, and you almost answer that you know, but for a second it is even hard to breathe.
Nevertheless, you don't need to say anything, because your silence is everything Yoongi needed to confirm that an introduction isn't necessary and in fact, you'd probably rather forget about him.
Because is him.
The guy who hurt you.

It's Spooky Month! - Spooky Month: The Novellized Version - Book 1.
Summary:
After eagerly waiting all day and night for the month of October to finally spring—a kid who calls himself Skid goes on wacky adventures with his friend who goes by the name of Pump! What sort of adventures will they get into? What sort of antics will arise? The answers are kind of unknown, because there's no predicting what can possibly happen when they're around!
Chapter 8: The Candy Club.
TWS FOR GRIEF, MORUNING, IMPLIED NEGLECT AND UNHEALTHY COPING MECHANISMS
————
It was still a night under the cold chill of the black sheets that blanketed the sky—flickering with all sorts of stars that appeared to stare down at the town. Almost, as if watching. The moon shone down as well, bathing anything within the radius of its rays with such glowing light.
And beneath the light—two small children walked along the sidewalks. Vehicles passed by with simple whir, and a brush of air flowing against them for a brief second before quickly evaporating into the atmosphere. They giggled, and of course, the two small children in question—wearing giant pumpkin and skeleton masks, were Pump and Skid.
They hopped, barely being able to hear the crickets chirping from nearby areas as some people walked past them or rode on bikes past where they were running. They had passed by a donut store along the way, a simple diner down the street that had closed a little while ago, a mall. Yet none of these places were their destination—there was only one destination these two had in mind.
And of course.. as they turned a corner, they gasped.
"Oh, hey! Eheheh! Look—there it is!"
Pump giggled, pointing in the direction of a slightly giant building with white walls, blue painting on the lines of the entrance, and yellow coloring around its windows. Within the interiors of its windows were gigantic, seemingly fake lollipops in bright green and pink coloring. Bright, artifical light seeped from out of every single pane of glass on the building. And there was a neon pink, bright taffy wrapper shaped sign from on high that simply read in white bold writing: "The Candy Club."
They didn't stop in their tracks, now quickening their pace and nearly stumbling along the cracks of the sidewalk below as they got closer and closer. Wind brushed wildly against their little faces while they giggled, and giggled—until they eventually came to a mild decrease in pace in front of the yellow plastic doors. They were automatic (obviously), and very much see-through. So see-through in fact they could see the cashier from inside just standing there at the counter.
The two quickly ran foward—the doors came open with a slight whir. The moment they ran onto the white tiled floors of the store, a chill enveloped their little bodies. It even felt so cold that they nearly shuddered upon entering the store. Still, they kept running, and their little eyes began to curiously look around the place.
The interiors held dark and high magenta walls, the ceiling from on high being tiled and white. Artifical square lights hung from the ceiling in various rows. All around them were large machines containing different candies—from almost comically large gumballs, some kind of liquid that must have been a sweet one, jawbreakers. There were little boxes from below the machines too—containing taffy candies, chocolates, hard candies covered in wrappers. There was even a poster on the wall in blue and pink coloring that was seemingly an advertisement for the place—only stating, 'The Sweetest Candy Store In Town! Come Down and Get Yourself A Treat!"
In front of them though was a white plastic counter, with such a reflective surface they could practically see their own reflections in it. Behind it though was a man they hadn't seen before. A tall man, in fact. He had black bangs in front of in hair that was so curled it almost appeared like a swirl, the bottom half of his hair poking out like he had gotten it cut by a really bad barber or something. His face was slim and long—with tan, warm-brown skin.
His brows were black and arched. Beneath his brows though were a pair of half-lidded eyes with dark brown pupils inside. The man had his head cocked to the side, a thin smile plastered on his lips. His neck was long, but thin. And on top of his head was a single cap that seemed almost a bit too big for him—with a singular pastel pink c written on the top, and a blue line plastered across the roof of his cap.
He was skinny. Lanky, in fact. With a white button-up over his slim body, his sleeves with a singular pink stripe across seeming almost a bit too big over his long arms. He wore a bow-tie around his neck, with a pink bow that was shaped like a wrapper, and a white swirl drawn upon the center. They couldn't see his lower half, so it was hard to tell what pants or anything else he must have been wearing.
They weren't able to think about that for long though—for then he spoke. In a low, nasally, almost croaky voice—"Hi." He smiled. "What would you two kids like?" He said with a slight tilt of his head.
Skid paused to think for a split second, the scent of candy seeping into the holes of his mask and all the way to his nostrils. He gave a giggle, "We—eheh.. we want candy!"
"Yeah—do you have any—any gummies?" Pump asked, raising his hand.
"Uh.. no." The man slowly answered. "Sorry, kids. We're kinda out of those."
Their smiles faltered, and the man looked upon them for a moment, his frown quickly becoming a big wobbly as he spoke.
"We're—uh—we're selling candy cans though!"
"Candy cans?" Pump repeated.
"Yeah. They're.. like a bucket of candy. And they're free right now, so.. I can just give you those."
The two paused, and then slowly started to grin again. Skid nodded rather rapidly while jumping up and landing back down on the floor. "Oh, yes! Yes, yes, yes!"
"Yeah! Give us—give us candy cans!" Pumps lispy voice practically yelled out.
In a matter of a few seconds, they both began to yell out at the same time while the man's smile on his thin lips slowly began to twitch downward. He arched a brow, looking upon them with what looked like confusion, and something else.
"Give us candy cansssss!" Skid beamed.
"Give us candy cans! Give us candy cans!" Pump said in a sing-songy tone.
The man was quiet, and then sighed. "Okay—okay. You don't need to shout at me."
The man then turned around. From behind him on the shelves were several items of candies. Some of them were lollipops, other were triangular rock candies. From a row of plastic yellow buckets with pink lids and a pink taffy symbol over it, he grabbed one of the buckets, and then another before finally turning back around.
He then held his arms out. Skid looked at the bucket with wide eyes, giggling with slight excitement, and Pump only smiled at his—eagerly taking it in his little hands the moment the man held it out.
"..well? Are you gonna take it?" The man asked Skid.
"Yeah! Eheheh.." He took the bucket in his hands right then, holding it close to his chest. Looking up, he tilted his head. "Oh—uh.. who are you?"
"..me?"
"Yeah—we haven't seen you around!"
The man arched a brow, but answered. "Uh.. I'm Kevin. I just kinda got a job here, so thats probably why."
"Ohhh! Eheheh.." Skid giggled. "Well, we just wanted to—to come here to see the new candy store my grandma was talking about!"
"Yeah, the candy tasted spooky!"
"Your grandma—" Kevin repeated, and then stopped. "Wait—how come you're both wearing costumes?"
"Cuz it's spooky month?" Pump answered. "Duhhh!"
"..its.. not even Halloween yet though."
"So? It's still spooky month!"
"Yeah, but it's still not time to trick or treat—"
"Its still spooky month!" Skid insisted, frowning.
"..yeah, sure. Okay." He flatly replied. "So.. do you two want anything else, or are you just gonna stand there?"
"Mmm.. no! It's okay!" Skid shrugged. "We just wanted candy."
He then turned around, giving a simple giggle. "Let's—" He whispered, "Let's go check out the graveyard again!"
"Ehehehe.. okay!" Pump whispered back.
Skid then turned his head around briefly, "Okay—we're gonna go now! It was really nice to meet you, Devon!"
"Kevin."
"Yeah—Kevin! Bye-byeeee!"
The two then began to make their way back over to the artificial doors, giggling the whole way as they did so, and seeing the plastic translucent yellow doors get closer. They felt Kevin's eyes simply watch them from behind as they ran. He muttered something neither of them could hear.
Yet it didn't matter, for as soon as the doors opened wide, they ran back into the chill of the night.
————
Skid sat beside Pump on the bench with his shoulders minorly slumped, letting his eyes gaze at the street in front of them while his candy can sat on the ground below. Pump ate mindlessly from his own jar—crunching and chewing random candies he ate as he did so.
Crickets filled the empty silence. And after a while, Skid spoke.
"Hey, Pump?"
Skid asked as Pump sat beside him on the wooden bench in front of the gates of the cemetery.
"Yeah?"
"..you ever miss your parents?"
"Uh.. yeah, I do."
"..."
"You ever miss your dad" Pump asked, taking a piece of candy from the bucket beside him, and opening it slowly.
"..yeah."
"Is.. that why you keep coming here?"
"..."
Pump was silent. The sky was still a sheet of black, with barely an people around on the lone street as the two simply sat in silence. The moon shone down. Skid had his shoulders slumped, looking down at his lap from behind his mask. He sniffled, feeling his eyes begin to water.
As they sat, Pump looked up at the sky, and then widened his eyes. "Well, that's okay! Let's not think about it. Let's just—get back to spooky month."
"..yeah." Skids voice brightened a little as he spoke again, "Yeah—let's do that!"

The Things You See in a Convenience Store
“What is that?”
“Hah?” The cashier straightened up from beneath the counter, holding the customer’s requested lucky color of lighter, and looked around in confusion. “What’s what?”
“That! Right there!” The customer looked at her in wide-eyed horror.
“You can see it, can’t you?” The teenager frowned and looked in the direction the man was pointing. She didn’t see what there was to fuss about. All she could see on that side of the store was the Icee machine, the coffee bar (which Edgar still hadn’t refilled, the lazy bum), an orange snake monster floating near the hot dog rollers, and a few discarded straw wrappers that hadn’t made it to the trash-
Wait.
“…oh! That!” The cashier relaxed and smiled at the shaken man. She leaned over the counter and waved in the direction of the orange creature hanging over the edge of the bun warmer. “Hi Bran!” The creature lifted its serpentine head and looked around for the sound. Its expression appeared to light up - almost literally, by the reflections on the side of the Icee machine - when it realized it was being spoken to, and it raised one short, clawed arm to wave back. Then it returned to pressing its snout against the warmer’s glass front, seemingly enraptured by the slow turning of the hot dogs.
“That’s just Branwen. She likes to watch the hot dogs roll around when her dad is nearby but doesn’t need her. She’s harmless - unless you’re a bratwurst.” The cashier placed the lighter on the counter and tapped at the keys of her register. “Let me guess…you’re from somewhere up east, right? Metropolis? Gotham?”
“Uh…Metropolis.” The customer held out his debit card to the keypad without looking, or even really listening for the beep. “I had some business in El Paso, but the weather back home cancelled my connecting flight, so I’m stuck here until Monday.”
“Well then, welcome to Sigil City! Let me give you some advice from a local…” The cashier tore off the receipt that printed and held it out to the man with a smile. “I know we’ve got a hopping bar scene downtown, but try to be indoors by 3am, and if you can’t, try to stay in the streetlights. If you hear someone calling your name from the alleys, no you didn’t, and walk - don’t run - away quick as you can.” The customer raised an eyebrow at the strange words as he took his receipt, but the ringing of the front door bell interrupted any comment he could have made.
Habitually, he glanced at whomever had just entered the store, and his eyes widened as a faceless figure dressed head to toe in shining golden armor walked by, with a cape as red as Superman’s flowing behind him.
“There you are!” The figure said, his voice just on the edge of inhuman. Branwen looked up from the hot dog roller, and made a musical sort of whistling sound before leaping from the machine to land on the figure’s pauldrons while he was still two aisles away. “I should have guessed you would be here.” He turned to look at the front counter as the orange creature lounged across his shoulders like a particularly long cat, and the customer realized with horror that the helmet was empty. A deep darkness filled the space within, and only two golden lights - flickering every now and then, as if blinking - floated in the void where eyes might have been.
“Thanks for letting her hang out, Sandra.” Gawain reached up one hand to scratch Bran behind her spines as he stepped up to take his place in the queue. “What do we owe you for…the….“ He trailed off into silence as the first customer suddenly turned and bolted out of the store, leaving the door to slowly swing shut as he disappeared into the night.
“…huh.” Gawain leaned forward slightly where he stood, tracking the figure as they retreated, and nodded his head in the direction of the doors. “What’s with him, then?” Sandra shrugged.
“Oh, don't worry about it...” She picked up the receipt the man had dropped on the counter in his haste and crumpled it up. “Just another tourist from up east.”

Beyond Sugar: 6 Healthy Lollipop Trends You Shouldn’t Ignore
When most people think of a lollipop, they picture a colorful, sugar-packed candy on a stick. But the candy industry is evolving — and so is the lollipop. With growing demand for better-for-you treats, today’s lollipops are being reimagined with health-conscious ingredients, cleaner labels, and smarter packaging.
Whether you're a confectionery brand or a contract manufacturer, here are the top healthy lollipop trends you need to know — and how advanced lollipop making machines from Dhiman Industries are helping brands keep up.
1. Sugar-Free and Low-Sugar Lollipops
Consumers are actively looking for low-sugar or sugar-free options, driven by rising awareness around diabetes, obesity, and dental health. Ingredients like xylitol, erythritol, and stevia are replacing traditional sugars — offering the same sweetness without the spike.
Modern sugar-free lollipop machines are built to handle these specialty formulations without compromising on shine, clarity, or shelf stability. At DhimanGroup, our machines are calibrated to work with both traditional and alternative sweeteners to ensure smooth flow and uniformity.
Trending Keywords: sugar-free candy, xylitol lollipops, stevia-based sweets
2. Organic and Natural Ingredients
Today’s consumers are reading labels — and they’re choosing lollipops made with organic fruit juices, natural colorants (like turmeric, spirulina, beetroot), and plant-based extracts over artificial flavors and synthetic dyes.
This shift has pushed manufacturers to upgrade their candy production equipment. Dhiman’s lollipop machines can be customized to preserve the integrity of delicate ingredients, helping you create clean-label products without sacrificing efficiency.
Trending Keywords: organic lollipops, natural color lollipop, clean label candy
3. Vitamin-Infused and Functional Lollipops
The idea of combining nutrition with confectionery has gone mainstream. Lollipops are now being infused with:
Vitamin C & D for immunity
Probiotics for gut health
CBD or melatonin for calm and sleep support
Fibre for digestive wellness
Precision matters. Our temperature-controlled cooking and depositing systems ensure sensitive nutrients remain intact — giving you full control over active ingredient delivery without compromising on flavor or mouthfeel.
Trending Keywords: functional candy, vitamin lollipops, supplement sweets
4. Allergen-Free and School-Safe Treats
Parents and schools are seeking safe, allergen-free options — free from nuts, dairy, gluten, and artificial additives. This isn’t just a dietary preference; it’s often a necessity.
At DhimanGroup, we understand that allergen control starts with equipment design. Our lollipop manufacturing lines include hygienic, easy-to-clean features, minimizing cross-contamination risks and supporting safer production.
Trending Keywords: allergen-free lollipops, nut-free candy, school-safe sweets
5. Plant-Based and Vegan Lollipops
With the rise of vegan and plant-based lifestyles, gelatin is being swapped for pectin or agar-agar. These alternatives support vegan claims while also enabling a softer bite and faster flavor release.
Dhiman’s lollipop machines can be fine-tuned for plant-based formulations, ensuring optimal setting, texture, and mold release across a variety of recipes.
Trending Keywords: vegan lollipops, pectin-based candy, gelatin-free sweets
6. Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Packaging
It’s not just what’s in the lollipop that counts — it’s how it’s wrapped. Consumers are increasingly drawn to biodegradable wrappers, recyclable containers, and paper sticks.
Many manufacturers are upgrading to automated lollipop wrapping machines that accommodate eco-friendly packaging formats without sacrificing speed or precision.
Trending Keywords: sustainable candy packaging, biodegradable lollipop wrapper, paper stick lollipop
Final Thoughts: Healthier Lollipops, Smarter Equipment
The lollipop of the future is no longer just about sweetness — it’s about wellness, transparency, and sustainability. From sugar-free to supplement-enhanced options, candy makers are leaning into innovation. And behind each of these new formulations is the technology to make it possible.
At Dhiman Industries, we’re proud to support forward-thinking confectioners with modular, precision-engineered lollipop machines that meet the demands of today’s cleaner, healthier candy market.

Holy Cow! Our Grainy Tale as Top Cattle Feed Manufacturers in Rajasthan 🐄🌾
Introduction
Tumblr media
Once upon a time in the royal sands of Rajasthan, while most folks were dreaming of camels and castles, we were busy obsessing over… cattle feed. Yep, while others chased treasure, we chased tail — literally — the tail of every healthy cow we proudly fed.
Today, we're moo-ving and grooving as one of the fastest-growing Cattle Feed Manufacturers in Rajasthan, making cows say “Moo-la-la!” and farmers smile wider than a camel’s yawn.
Grab your lassi, lean back, and join us on this grainy, crunchy, utterly digestible journey of how we went from local feed tinkerers to cattle whisperers with sacks of nutrition magic!
The Great Moo-ment: How It All Started 🐮✨
No fairy godmother appeared. No dramatic music played. Just a bunch of us, standing around, looking at our local dairy cows and wondering, “Why do these cows look like they’ve been skipping leg day?”
Turns out, the answer was in the feed. Or lack of it.
Cows were chowing down on whatever was available — half-dried hay, leftover grains, and the occasional plastic wrapper (don’t ask). Our hearts said no. Our brains said science. And our stomachs said — “This smells weird.”
So, we did what any enterprising Rajasthani would do: We got to work.
We started testing, mixing, grinding, and formulating. After countless trials (and one exploding mixer), we cracked the code. The cows were happy. The milk flowed. The farmers danced. And just like that, we moo-ved into the spotlight as proud Cattle Feed Manufacturers in Rajasthan.
Our Secret Recipe: Love, Science & Just the Right Crunch 🔬❤️🌾
What makes our feed the talk of every cattle group chat?
Balanced Nutrition: Protein, carbs, fiber, and vitamins all packed into one delicious bite. If we didn’t make it for cows, we’d probably eat it ourselves (okay, we tried it once — don’t judge).
Easy Digestion: No more grumpy cows with upset tummies. Just happy, mooing machines.
Royal Taste (According to Cows): We can’t prove it, but we’re pretty sure one of our cows cried tears of joy last monsoon.
Made with Rajasthani Grit: Just like our forts, our feed is solid, reliable, and built to last.
Tamil Nadu: From Sand Dunes to Coconut Groves 🌴🐂
One fine day, while we were basking in our Rajasthani glory, we got a call from a farmer in Tamil Nadu.
He said, “Hello sir, I heard your feed is so good, my neighbor’s cows have started giving milk like they’re on a mission.”
Flattered, curious, and slightly confused, we sent a batch.
Fast-forward a few weeks, and Tamil Nadu farmers were lining up like it was a Rajinikanth movie premiere. Turns out, even the cows were headbutting each other to get to the troughs faster.
That’s how we accidentally became one of the top Cattle Feed Manufacturers in Tamil Nadu — not by design, but by demand.
And now?
Our feed is traveling from deserts to tropical fields.
Farmers are calling it “A-grade for A2 milk.”
And cows are making udderly big gains.
We even considered changing our name to “Cattle Chow South Edition,” but the marketing guy fainted.
Cattle-ly Ever After: Stories That Keep Us Moo-tivated 📝❤️
We’ve had some legendairy moments on this journey. Here are just a few:
A cow named Laxmi in Jodhpur broke her own milk record twice in one week. (We gave her a medal. She licked it.)
One farmer said our feed gave his cattle so much energy, they started doing yoga. (No proof, but he sounded sincere.)
Another claimed our feed was the reason his buffalo smiled at him for the first time. (Okay, maybe he needs a break.)
Every story adds to our mission: Happy cows. Proud farmers. And feed so good, it should win awards.
What’s Cooking in Our Feed Factory? 🔥🏭
We take feed manufacturing seriously (even if we don’t take ourselves seriously). Here’s how we do it:
Ingredients: The freshest grains, legumes, and micronutrients. No junk, no shortcuts, no shady stuff.
Tech-Enabled Production: Our machines make more noise than an Indian wedding, but they mix, mill, and mash to perfection.
Quality Checks: If even one pellet is out of shape, our QA head gives it the side-eye of doom.
Packaging: Sealed, secure, and sometimes stamped with cow-licked approval.
We don’t just make feed. We craft it. Like a chef crafting gourmet dishes… for cows. (Gourmooot, anyone?)
Beyond Rajasthan & Tamil Nadu: Guess Who’s Moo-ving Next? 📦🧭
We’ve danced through dunes and breezed through banana groves. But now, it’s time to hit the east — West Bengal, here we come!
From Howrah to Hooghly, cows are getting ready to taste the good life. We’re already prepping feed formulas that match the dietary habits of cattle in the region. After all, every cow has its own vibe.
We’re excited to join the ranks of Cattle Feed Manufacturers in West Bengal, and bring the moo-mentum there.
So get ready Bengal — the good stuff’s coming. And if you spot a feed truck with colorful art and a cow DJ painted on the side… that’s us.
So, Why Choose Us? (Besides the Fact That We’re Moo-sicians) 🎤🐄
Okay, jokes aside — here’s why farmers from across India trust us:
✅ Years of hands-on experience ✅ Science-backed formulations ✅ Feed that actually makes a difference ✅ Reliable deliveries (with a smile and sometimes, snacks) ✅ Support team that’s just as passionate as you are
We’re not just a brand. We’re a moo-vement.
Let’s Talk: Feed, Cows, Jokes — We’re Here! 📞🐄
Have a question about your cow’s diet? Need a bulk order for your dairy farm? Just want to hear another cow pun?
Hit us up.
📞 Call us on our Moo-helpline 📦 Pan-India delivery (and beyond!) 🌾 Personalized nutrition plans for your herd 💬 WhatsApp, chat, or shout across the field — we’ll find you
The Final Moo 🐮
From the scorching sands of Rajasthan to the lush greens of Tamil Nadu and now the rice fields of West Bengal — our journey has been nothing short of udderly spectacular.
So, next time your cow looks at you with those hungry eyes, remember: not all feed is created equal. Some feed is just… legendary.
And we’re not saying we’re heroes. But we are the kind of people who’ve made cows across three states very happy.
So, ready to join the moo-ment? Let's feed, grow, and laugh together.
Moo-velous things await.

The What If Machine: Bringing the “Iffy” Future of CSS into the Present
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/the-what-if-machine-bringing-the-iffy-future-of-css-into-the-present/
The What If Machine: Bringing the “Iffy” Future of CSS into the Present
Geoff’s post about the CSS Working Group’s decision to work on inline conditionals inspired some drama in the comments section. Some developers are excited, but it angers others, who fear it will make the future of CSS, well, if-fy. Is this a slippery slope into a hellscape overrun with rogue developers who abuse CSS by implementing excessive logic in what was meant to be a styling language? Nah. Even if some jerk did that, no mainstream blog would ever publish the ramblings of that hypothetical nutcase who goes around putting crazy logic into CSS for the sake of it. Therefore, we know the future of CSS is safe.
You say the whole world’s ending — honey, it already did
My thesis for today’s article offers further reassurance that inline conditionals are probably not the harbinger of the end of civilization: I reckon we can achieve the same functionality right now with style queries, which are gaining pretty good browser support.
If I’m right, Lea’s proposal is more like syntactic sugar which would sometimes be convenient and allow cleaner markup. It’s amusing that any panic-mongering about inline conditionals ruining CSS might be equivalent to catastrophizing adding a ternary operator for a language that already supports if statements.
Indeed, Lea says of her proposed syntax, “Just like ternaries in JS, it may also be more ergonomic for cases where only a small part of the value varies.” She also mentions that CSS has always been conditional. Not that conditionality was ever verboten in CSS, but CSS isn’t always very good at it.
Sold! I want a conditional oompa loompa now!
Me too. And many other people, as proven by Lea’s curated list of amazingly complex hacks that people have discovered for simulating inline conditionals with current CSS. Some of these hacks are complicated enough that I’m still unsure if I understand them, but they certainly have cool names. Lea concludes: “If you’re aware of any other techniques, let me know so I can add them.”
Hmm… surely I was missing something regarding the problems these hacks solve. I noted that Lea has a doctorate whereas I’m an idiot. So I scrolled back up and reread, but I couldn’t stop thinking: Are these people doing all this work to avoid putting an extra div around their widgets and using style queries?
It’s fair if people want to avoid superfluous elements in the DOM, but Lea’s list of hacks shows that the alternatives are super complex, so it’s worth a shot to see how far style queries with wrapper divs can take us.
Motivating examples
Lea’s motivating examples revolve around setting a “variant” property on a callout, noting we can almost achieve what she wants with style queries, but this hypothetical syntax is sadly invalid:
.callout @container (style(--variant: success)) border-color: var(--color-success-30); background-color: var(--color-success-95); &::before content: var(--icon-success); color: var(--color-success-05);
She wants to set styles on both the container itself and its descendants based on --variant. Now, in this specific example, I could get away with hacking the ::after pseudo-element with z-index to give the illusion that it’s the container. Then I could style the borders and background of that. Unfortunately, this solution is as fragile as my ego, and in this other motivating example, Lea wants to set flex-flow of the container based on the variant. In that situation, my pseudo-element solution is not good enough.
Remember, the acceptance of Lea’s proposal into the CSS spec came as her birthday gift from the universe, so it’s not fair to try to replace her gift with one of those cheap fake containers I bought on Temu. She deserves an authentic container.
Let’s try again.
Busting out the gangsta wrapper
One of the comments on Lea’s proposal mentions type grinding but calls it “a very (I repeat, very) convoluted but working” approach to solving the problem that inline conditionals are intended to solve. That’s not quite fair. Type grinding took me a bit to get my head around, but I think it is more approachable with fewer drawbacks than other hacks. Still, when you look at the samples, this kind of code in production would get annoying. Therefore, let’s bite the bullet and try to build an alternate version of Lea’s flexbox variant sample. My version doesn’t use type grinding or any hack, but “plain old” (not so old) style queries together with wrapper divs, to work around the problem that we can’t use style queries to style the container itself.
The wrapper battles type grinding
Comparing the code from Lea’s sample and my version can help us understand the differences in complexity.
Here are the two versions of the CSS:
And here are the two versions of the markup:
So, simpler CSS and slightly more markup. Maybe we are onto something.
What I like about style queries is that Lea’s proposal uses the style() function, so if and when her proposal makes it into browsers then migrating style queries to inline conditionals and removing the wrappers seems doable. This wouldn’t be a 2025 article if I didn’t mention that migrating this kind of code could be a viable use case for AI. And by the time we get inline conditionals, maybe AI won’t suck.
But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. Have you ever tried to adopt some whizz-bang JavaScript framework that looks elegant in the “to-do list” sample? If so, you will know that solutions that appear compelling in simplistic examples can challenge your will to live in a realistic example. So, let’s see how using style queries in the above manner works out in a more realistic example.
Seeking validation
Combine my above sample with this MDN example of HTML5 Validation and Seth Jeffery’s cool demo of morphing pure CSS icons, then feed it all into the “What If” Machine to get the demo below.
All the changes you see to the callout if you make the form valid are based on one custom property. This property is never directly used in CSS property values for the callout but controls the style queries that set the callout’s border color, icon, background color, and content. We set the --variant property at the .callout-wrapper level. I am setting it using CSS, like this:
@property --variant success"; initial-value: error; inherits: true; body:has(:invalid) .callout-wrapper --variant: error; body:not(:has(:invalid)) .callout-wrapper --variant: success;
However, the variable could be set by JavaScript or an inline style in the HTML, like Lea’s samples. Form validation is just my way of making the demo more interactive to show that the callout can change dynamically based on --variant.
Wrapping up
It’s off-brand for me to write an article advocating against hacks that bend CSS to our will, and I’m all for “tricking” the language into doing what we want. But using wrappers with style queries might be the simplest thing that works till we get support for inline conditionals. If we want to feel more like we are living in the future, we could use the above approach as a basis for a polyfill for inline conditionals, or some preprocessor magic using something like a Parcel plugin or a PostCSS plugin — but my trigger finger will always itch for the Delete key on such compromises. Lea acknowledges, “If you can do something with style queries, by all means, use style queries — they are almost certainly a better solution.”
I have convinced myself with the experiments in this article that style queries remain a cromulent option even in Lea’s motivating examples — but I still look forward to inline conditionals. In the meantime, at least style queries are easy to understand compared to the other known workarounds. Ironically, I agree with the comments questioning the need for the inline conditionals feature, not because it will ruin CSS but because I believe we can already achieve Lea’s examples with current modern CSS and without hacks. So, we may not need inline conditionals, but they could allow us to write more readable, succinct code. Let me know in the comment section if you can think of examples where we would hit a brick wall of complexity using style queries instead of inline conditionals.

Open Heart 2 - Chapter 19
Hopeful Hearts
Two weeks later, at the beginning of February, Matthew and his friends were relaxing in the residents lounge. They were putting on brave faces, but it was difficult to ignore the increasing urgency of the financial situation. Some doctors – like June – were already jumping ship, but there had been lay-offs already. Some interns had even already transferred.
“Looks like they finally stocked this place with some half-decent coffee,” Matthew sighed, watching it flow from the machine into his cup.
“Yeah, just in time for the hospital to close.”
“Jackie…”
“But if we go down, we go down in style.”
“Some of us do everything in style!”
“That’s true. Of course, Bryce isn’t one of those people but it’s worth remembering.”
“Hey, I’ve been looking for you guys!”
Kyra – still working part time admin – strolled into the lounge and flopped onto the couch as if she owned the place.
“Someone’s pleased with herself,” Bryce smirked. “What’s the news?”
“I suggest you check your emails.”
The doctors collectively took their phones from their pockets and refreshed their email page to be greeted with an intriguing subject line: You Are Formally Invited to Edenbrook’s Hopeful Hearts Gala! It detailed a formal gala hosted by Edenbrook to raise money for the hospital. With live music and the dress code announcing evening wear, they were going all out.
“Wait…how on earth did you put this together? It’s this coming Friday!”
“Yeah, I kind of wanted to have it on Valentine’s Day but it was a bit short notice and…honestly, there’s no time to waste.” Kyra shook her head. “I’ve spent all week on nothing else. Everything’s gone into planning, and I’ve already secured RSVPs from some of the richest people in Boston.”
Everyone exploded into excitement and hammered Kyra with more questions about how she had convinced the attendees, and who specifically was coming. She giggled and refused to spill the beans on that.
“How did you come up with the idea?” Matthew asked her.
“Actually, it was what you said about the kindness of strangers, the other week when we went out for gelato. It got me thinking about people in general and charity events…but also, I want to save the hospital as much as you guys. Edenbrook saved me so many times, the least I can do is try and save it.”
She looked oddly emotional. Bryce reached over to squeeze her hand.
“It’s OK, Kyra,” he said, but before she could start sobbing he gave her his cocky grin. “You can just admit this was a ploy to see me in a suit.”
“If I wanted to see that, I’d have just asked,” Kyra teased, playfully swatting him away.
“I think it’s a fantastic idea,” Matthew said. “It’s going to be great.”
****
His voice called out to Matthew later that day, even though he didn’t have a physical therapy appointment.
“What are you doing here? Is everything OK?”
“Everything’s fine,” Raf smiled reassuringly as he awkwardly held something behind his back. “I’ve been looking for you. I want to give you these.”
He brought a small tin out from behind his back and removed the lid to reveal it was full of chocolate-sprinkled candies, nestled in paper cups. Matthew knew Juliana’s handiwork when he saw it and already knew they would taste delicious.
“So what did I do to deserve this?” he asked, looking up at Raf, who was scratching the back of his neck sheepishly.
“Kyra sent me an invite to the gala, so I checked with my doctors and they think it’s OK, sooo…I wanted to ask if you wanted to go together?”
He was oddly nervous, like a teenager asking out his crush for the first time. It was adorable.
“So this is your prom-posal?”
Raf blinked, then breathed out a laugh.
“I guess so, yeah.”
“Raf…” Matthew covered Raf’s hand on the tin with his own. “I would love to go to the dance with you.”
He took one of the chocolates from the wrapper and held it out to him, invitingly. Raf’s smile grew as he took it with his teeth.
“Thanks,” he grinned, handing the tin to Matthew. “But I should probably get going before someone tells you off for being inappropriate at work.”
“Worth it,” Matthew smirked, taking one of the brigadeiros for himself.
He got home from work early Friday afternoon and had a quick meal before getting into the shower. His roommates were arriving home too and they would spend the rest of the evening getting ready before the gala started seven. Sienna was taking Aurora as her plus one, Elijah was bringing Phoebe from across the hall, Bryce was taking Keiki…yes, the point of the gala was to raise money for the hospital but it didn’t mean they couldn’t have a damn good time doing it.
Matthew turned off the shower and pulled back the curtain to find Jackie brushing her teeth.
“You forgot to lock the door,” she said casually, as he yanked the curtain back in to place.
“C’mon, I’m naked here!”
“We’re doctors, we’ve all seen worse.”
“Ooh, are there any band-aids left? I need some for my shoes.”
Sienna rushed in and started rootling through the cupboard under the sink.
“Matthew, have you seen the pomade?” Elijah stopped to hover in the doorway.
“I last saw it on the coffee table,” Matthew said, poking his head round the shower curtain. “I don’t suppose someone could pass me a towel?”
“Call me when you’re done in the bathroom, Jackie, I need to do my hair.”
“Don’t you guys have your own rooms?” Matthew chuckled, making sure the towel was securely wrapped around himself before stepping out the shower and crossing the hall to his room to properly dry off and get ready.
“I’m gonna need your opinion on this one, Spooky,” he said to the chinchilla that had been snoozing on his bed. “Edenbrook needs to make a good impression tonight…and so do I for my date with Rafael.”
Their first official date since the attack, their first in almost a year. Matthew practically bounced with excitement as he searched through his closet and uncovered the tux he was looking for – black pants and bow-tie with a midnight-blue jacket. Sienna and Aurora had insisted they go shopping for the gala where he had been convinced to buy it. He hung it on the door before rubbing the towel over his hair until it fluffed out like a cloud, and brushing it into place. He was overdue for a haircut…still, Raf seemed to like it a little long.
“What do you think?” he asked Spooky, when he was fully dressed. She gave a little squeak, which was good enough for him. He had to admit, when he looked in the mirror, the tux looked very good on him.
The girls were still getting ready, with a playlist blaring from Sienna’s room. Matthew sat on the couch to wait for Raf when Elijah rolled up, wearing an olive green tux.
“The pomade was on the coffee table, under a bunch of magazines,” he said. “Speaking of hair, when did Bryce say he was getting here?”
“’Around six thirty, give or take’,” Matthew quoted, as the girls filed into the living room. “Hey, you guys look nice.”
Jackie had decided not to go shopping and wore the same dress she wore to Vegas. Aurora had a new dress, another red one, with one shoulder strap and an enticing leg slit. Sienna wore a strapless purple gown. Her hair was pinned off her face and it flowed down her back. She looked back at Matthew appreciatively.
“So do you. Told you that tux would be a great idea!”
“Those rich creeps won’t know what hit ‘em,” Jackie smirked, as she held up her phone to capture them all in a candid selfie as the doorbell rang.
“I’ll get it…oh!”
Sienna had just answered the door to find Rafael in a black suit and a grey silk tie. Matthew beamed, his cheeks warmed: Raf was looking a million dollars and Matthew was dating him.
“Someone cleans up good,” Jackie said as Rafael joined them.
“I could say the same about you guys…especially Matthew.”
“This old thing?” Matthew joked, casually adjusting his tie, secretly thrilled Raf liked the tux.
“Old, new…you look fantastic. Ready to hit the prom?”
“Prom? You feeling alright, buddy?” Elijah said, looking at Raf suspiciously. Matthew laughed as he slid his arm around Raf’s waist.
“Relax, Elijah, it’s just an inside joke.”
“It’s a little like prom, in some ways. Heh, someone spiked the punch at my senior prom,” Sienna said, nostalgically.
“Two of the prom queen candidates got into a fight at my school, so at the beginning of my senior year they told us there would be no prom royalty this time around. I saw at least three girls crying about it,” Aurora said.
“Sheesh…I didn’t go to my prom and I’m starting to wonder what I missed out on!” Matthew said. Raf kissed his cheek.
“It won’t be as good as tonight will be,” he said, eyes sparkling. “I’ve got a cab outside, unless you all want to go together…?”
“Elijah’s going with Phoebe, and we’re still waiting for Bryce…anyone heard from him or Keiki?”
“He texted me ten minutes ago that he had to fix his hair and was on his way. You guys go ahead.”
“Come on,” Matthew said, taking Raf’s hand. “I want everyone to see me with you.”
“Agreed.” Raf looked him over appreciatively as they left the apartment. “I mean it. I can’t believe I get to walk in there with you on my arm.”
Pulling up outside the hospital wasn’t much different than any other evening, except for a considerably larger quantity of nice cars  in the parking lot. Walking up to the atrium doors was a different story, with soft fairy lights draped over the entrance and…
“Is that a red carpet?”
“They really are pulling out all the stops!”
The inside of the atrium had been transformed. Fairy lights – likely the Christmas decorations – were hung in garlands and the main lights had been lowered to mood lighting. Round tables covered in white table cloths and surrounded with velvet cushioned chairs filled the room, except for the far side where there was a bar, dance floor and a live band. Next to the main staircase was a photographer, where Ethan, Harper and Naveen were having their photo taken against a clear backdrop.
“Well, don’t you two look handsome!”
They turned to see Kyra walking towards them, looking stunning in a gold evening gown.
“How did you manage to put all this together so quickly?” Matthew asked as he greeted her with a hug.
“I called in just about every favour owed to me, plus a few more I made up,” Kyra giggled. “I’m so glad you both made it. It wouldn’t have been quite the same without you.”
“I’ve lost count of the number of times Edenbrook saved my life. I wouldn’t miss this for the world,” Raf said. “By the way, is it possible to make donations online? Literally my entire family want to help. They’re not millionaires but…”
“Are you kidding? The admin team will take any donations you’re willing to offer!”
Kyra pointed them in the direction of the accounts team, who helped Raf email out donation details to his family members. Matthew sent them to Holly as well, knowing she would want to help, then the two of them looked around the room.
“Looks like our friends aren’t here yet,” Raf said. “What do you want to do in the meantime?”
“Let’s get our picture taken. Gotta have a memory of the big dance, right?”
Raf laughed as they walked over to the photographer and introduced themselves, Matthew as Dr Valentine and Raf described himself as ‘arm candy’.
“You know you’re so much more than that, right?” Matthew said as they stood on the spot they’d been directed to, and the photographer prepared his camera.
“I know,” Raf said. “Now smile. I have the perfect pose.”
He stood them both at an angle, himself behind Matthew, his arms wrapped around his waist.
“Oh, so we’re committing to this,” Matthew laughed, covering his hands.
The photographer looked slightly surprised at their goofy prom pose, but shrugged it off as he took a few pictures…then grinned when he saw the image.
“That’s actually very cute,” he said, taking a business card from his pocket and handing it to Matthew. “Photos should be available in around four-to-six weeks.”
Their friends had arrived whilst they had their picture taken, and stood in an excited cluster marvelling at the transformed atrium. It was picking up now, with doctors filing in dressed in their fanciest clothes ready to schmooze. Guests were displaying various levels of wealth: a woman walked past with her nose in the air wearing a huge diamond necklace. A man at the bar was in a non-descript suit, but wore a chunky gold watch and revealed a gold tooth when he laughed.
“Good to see you all here, young doctors,” Harper Emery said, striding towards them. She looked particularly glamorous in a glittering turquoise gown and silver jewellery. “I’m sure I don’t need to remind you of how important – critical, even – this gala is for Edenbrook. Boston’s most noteworthy philanthropists are here and we need you to convince them of the value you bring to the community.”
“Oh, I can attest to that personally,” Rafael said happily.
“So you want us to booze ‘em and schmooze ‘em,” Bryce said. Harper rolled her eyes but she was amused.
“Well, yes, but preferably less of the first one and more of the second one. Talk to people, connect with them, and remind them of Edenbrook’s value. Now, go do what you do best and make Edenbrook proud.” She beamed at them all and they beamed back in a way that vaguely reminded Matthew of her welcome speech at the beginning of last year. He had been intimidated by her then…and still kind of was now.
“Raf!” Elijah hissed, as soon as Harper’s back was turned. “I’ve just seen the manager of the Marauders baseball team!”
“Brianna Moser? Where?!”
Phoebe stood next to Elijah. Her dark, curly hair was half-up, and she wore a tight green dress to match him. Matthew chuckled at her baffled expression.
“Not a fan of baseball, I take it?”
“No, that’s something Elijah has for himself,” she said. “It’s good to meet you properly, by the way.”
“You too,” Matthew said, shaking her hand for good measure. “Thanks for coming out here.”
“I’m always up for a night out in a fancy dress. Maybe my favourite celebrity will turn up soon.”
Keiki was rolling her eyes as Sienna and Bryce were gawking at Mario Valez, an actor who was now a Channel 8 weatherman. However, Jackie was frowning at her phone.
“What’s wrong?” Matthew asked, and she sighed.
“As part of the investigation prompted by New York Times, they’ve published a list of all the doctors who accepted kickbacks from Panacea. Look.”
She shoved her phone into his hand and he scrolled through a very long list of hospitals, then a very long list of doctors, before he found Jackie’s name.
“Jackie, this is a shockingly long list. Like…they’re hardly going to blacklist every doctor on here, they’ll be short on staff otherwise.” Matthew peered at the figures next to the names. “Did someone really take three million dollars worth of kickbacks?”
Jackie snatched her phone back.
“It’s not like I’m expecting to be blacklisted, but I am expecting hospitals to be studying the list and treating doctors on it with suspicion. Who wants to hire someone who’ll sell out their patients?” She shook her head. “Don’t worry about me, what’s done is done. I said I’d face the consequences.”
She tucked her phone into her purse with a resigned air, then stood tall and strode towards a pair of rich guests. It was impressive how calmy she could face her future. There was something to be said for taking back control.
He turned back to Raf and touched his arm.
“Wanna come with me and convince your baseball team’s manager to donate to the hospital?”
“Heck yes! Just…give me a second not to be a fanboy,” Raf grinned. “Man, Lucas is gonna be so jealous if I get to talk to her…” He adjusted his collar, shook his hands out, and exhaled deeply. “OK, let’s go.”
Raf led Matthew to the bar, towards a brunette woman in a light blue gown who was sipping a glass of wine. She smiled politely as they approached.
“Ms Moser? My name’s Rafael Aveiro. I’m a big fan of the marauders.”
“It’s a pleasure, Mr Aveiro.”
“This season they’ve been…so great…”
Raf faltered as his need to be nice clashed against his truthful nature. Brianna Moser’s smile tightened a tiny bit.
“See, I know you’re lying. This season’s been a nightmare for everyone. I’m glad to meet fans but you won’t get around me with flattery.”
She turned back to the bar, taking a longer sip of wine. Matthew leaned over to talk to Rafael privately.
“Tell her what you really think.”
“That her team sucked?”
“Not in so many words, but you know more about baseball than I do. I don’t think many fans would be willing to have an honest discussion with her.”
An idea crossed Raf’s mind. He cleared his throat and returned to Brianna at the bar.
“What’s Pedro Cruz’s schedule like? He doesn’t seem to be pitching with as much strength as before.”
Brianna turned to him, her eyebrows raising in curiosity.
“You’ve noticed it too, huh? He says he’s following his nutrition and exercise program as usual but there’s definitely an underlying issue.”
“He’s played every game this season, maybe he’s just overexerted himself.”
“Possibly, but he is the pitcher. I’ll make sure he gets a check-up soon, and maybe some extra coaching for some of the others…”
Matthew smiled to himself as he watched Raf and Brianna trade ideas. Raf might have once worried about whether he could live up to Matthew (Matthew still highly doubted he was worth it) but no one else would have been able to sit with a major-league baseball manager and chat as naturally as he would with a work colleague. Just himself would always be enough.
“You have no idea how refreshing it is to hear an honest perspective, especially from a fan,” Brianna laughed. “How about a pair of season tickets, Mr Aveiro?”
Raf’s jaw dropped.
“Are you kidding? Uh, I mean…thank you so much!”
“How about you, sir?” Brianna asked Matthew, her eyes twinkling.
“Dr Valentine,” Matthew greeted, shaking her hand. “I’m more of a casual fan, but we appreciate anything you might be able to donate to the hospital.”
“After talking with your partner, it’s the least I can do.”
“Ms Moser, before you go…could I get a picture?”
Matthew snapped a photo of Raf and Brianna posed side-by-side before she made her way to the donations board. Raf was exerting particular effort into not leaping with excitement.
“Can you believe it? Season tickets! Oh man, that was the best advice you’ve ever given me…”
“I’m sure I’ve given you better advice than that,” Matthew laughed. “Just hide those tickets from Elijah, he’ll fight you for them. And don’t underestimate him just because of the wheelchair.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it. Maybe he and I can come to an agreement. Lucas too…and would you like to see a game or two with me?”
“As long as you’re there, I wouldn’t miss it.”
Raf couldn’t wait to tell Elijah about the tickets. Matthew teamed up with Sienna to convince Mario Valez to make a donation. He spent several minutes waffling about his own achievements, and then another several minutes talking about a rivalry he had with Richard Hornsby from Channel 6. Apparently they had once auditioned for the same part in a musical and had got all the way to the final callback before they both lost to the third auditionee. Now they both worked for the same TV network and things hadn’t got much better.
“I think Richard Hornsby was invited. He may be making donations of his own…”
“At least ten grand I think I heard someone saying…?”
“Well, he’s not going to get one over me this time! I can donate just as much as him, if not more!”
Mario beetled off to make his sizeable donation, leaving Matthew and Sienna giggling behind him.
“Can you believe it? That would be like us constantly trying to one-up someone we met in our first year of med school!”
“I barely remember most people from my class. I guess being rich doesn’t always mean being smart.”
He spent another hour meeting and charming various philanthropists, some seemed to genuinely want to help, some just wanted the glory that came with being charitable, and some didn’t seem to even want to be there.
“Matthew!”
Ines was waving him over from where she was chatting with Baz. She looked lovely, a literal sunshine in a strapless yellow dress and her curls bouncing loose instead of being in her usual bun. Baz was in a grey suit with a deep purple tie. A small flower was pinned to his jacket for decoration.
“You look handsome! It’s good to see you here,” Inez said, greeting him with a hug as Baz clapped him on the back, cheerfully.
“It’s good to see you too. I feel like I don’t see enough of you these days. Is Zaid here too?”
“God, no,” Baz laughed. “Can you imagine Zaid getting dressed up to kiss ass?”
“He specifically took a double shift so he wouldn’t have to be here, but someone needed to be working with the interns anyway, so it’s all good.”
“I bet the interns don’t see it that way. Although Esme might. Sometimes I wonder if she prefers working with Zaid.”
“Don’t say that. Esme has a lot of respect for you. She was extremely worried when you were sick.”
“Weren’t we all,” Baz said. “Actually I’m glad to see you and Raf here together. You’re thriving after experiencing a tragedy. I love to see it.”
“Thanks, Baz,” Matthew said. A deep appreciation for Baz and Ines – similar to how he’d felt seeing his friends for the first time after he’d been cleared from the attack – was building inside and he worked to keep his face smooth. “It’s taken a lot to get here, and we’re still not totally a hundred percent. Sometimes we don’t sleep, I’ve only recently been able to work in the patient room, Raf still isn’t back to full strength—”
“Hey, hey,” Baz said quickly. “You both being here is something to be celebrated.”
“I saw you getting your photo taken earlier. No one could have guessed you were both so ill a few months ago,” Ines said. “I’m proud of you, for everything you’ve overcome. Don’t beat yourself up for not bouncing back straight away.”
“And now we get to convince rich people to keep our hospital open to help more people who get poisoned,” Baz said, then he winced. “I’m so sorry, was that in bad taste? I didn’t think.”
To Matthew’s own surprise, he laughed, dissolving the heavy atmosphere. Trust Baz to make things feel better with an accidental joke.
“I won’t report you for it,” he said. “But if you guys don’t mind, I’m gonna find Rafael.”
He bade them goodbye and started moving through the crowd, but caught sight of Aurora looking upset and had to stop.
“Hey, are you OK?”
Aurora rolled her eyes and indicated a quieter corner. Matthew nodded and followed her. She was marching past people, impressively fast considering the heels she was wearing. She didn’t stop when they got to the quiet spot, she started pacing around in agitation.
“It’s happening again!” she groaned. “I’ve been trying to talk up Edenbrook, even though I haven’t worked here for months, but that doesn’t mean I want it to close, and I am trying, but no matter what I do, people ask about my aunt! Three times in a row I start talking about the clinic and they divert the conversation to surgery and the great Dr Harper Emery! I’m sick of it and I don’t know what to do anymore!” Her eyes welled up and she rootled around in her purse. “Dammit, I don’t have any tissues.”
They walked down the corridor until they got to a bathroom to grab tissues. Matthew was hesitant to speak, not sure what Aurora wanted from him as she dabbed her eyes.
“Sorry,” she said after a minute. “It must seem like this is all I complain about.”
“You haven’t mentioned it happening at Kenmore…”
It did, but Tobias didn’t know who I was when he hired me so I’ve been able to shut it down. I guess tonight just reminded me that I’ll always be in my aunt’s shadow.”
“Aurora.”
They both jumped. Harper had found them.
“Aunt Harper? How did you…oh god, was I too loud at the gala just now?” Aurora looked slightly embarrassed but Harper didn’t seem angry. Concerned was a better word.
“You didn’t cause a major scene, but I heard the last part. I thought perhaps if you want to talk about it, now would be a good time…?”
Matthew made to leave, thinking it was a conversation best had in private, but Aurora held on to his arm; she needed moral support. He leaned against the wall, trying to appear casual as Aurora faced Harper.
“Before you say anything,” Harper said. “I want you to know that Tobias offered me a position at Kenmore if Edenbrook closed. I wanted to talk to you about it first.”
“Wait…really?”
“Yes. I pushed you into accepting Edenbrook, and I kept pushing you throughout your intern year, and it almost damaged our relationship. I wasn’t going to make that mistake again, and from what I overheard, I think I was right.” Harper raised an eyebrow. “You were so excited to be moving to Mass Kenmore, I couldn’t help but be extremely proud of you. You were right that you were offered the job because of your actions, not your name, and from what I’ve heard, you’ve been doing very well. So I am a little surprised that you’re letting your old insecurities get the better of you.”
“It’s not that simple, Aunt Harper,” Aurora protested, though she suddenly looked a tiny bit ashamed. “All through med school I’ve been ‘Dr Emery’s niece’, and I’ve just started to break out of it, but here I am being pushed back. I don’t expect you to understand.”
Looking stern but sympathetic, Harper walked over and put her hands on Aurora’s shoulder.
“Listen. You are many things, Aurora, but self-pitying is not one of them. Furthermore, I have it on good authority that you’re thriving at Kenmore and I couldn’t be more proud, so don’t let some old men make you believe otherwise. But…a mistake that I’ve made was not explaining that medicine always means working in someone else’s shadow.”
“What do you mean?” Aurora asked, and Matthew straightened up, properly listening again.
“Every doctor lists who they did their residency under on their resume. It gives an insight as to what kind of doctor they are. Maybe some people are interested in you right now because of the family name, but someday I may screw up huge. If that happened, would you keeping your job have anything to do with me?”
“Uh…I guess not?” Aurora answered like she was taking an exam.
“You’d have proven yourself as your own doctor, separate to me. But now that you work for Tobias, it will be true of his mistakes and successes. Even now, I meet doctors and I can tell who some of them have studied under, simply because of how they talk or work. Fair or not, your mentor’s  choices will reflect on you.”
“Ethan constantly worries about how his choices reflect on Naveen,” Matthew blurted. Harper started, like she’d momentarily forgotten he was there, then chuckled.
“That doesn’t surprise me one bit. And I’m sorry to say Matthew, you’ll be carrying the weight of Ethan’s decisions throughout your career.”
Matthew wasn’t too bothered by that prospect, but he couldn’t help feeling sorry for Esme. If what Harper said was true, he hadn’t given her the fairest start to her career.
“OK, but…what do I do with that now?” Aurora asked.
“You be the best doctor you can be and prove to them that you’re a standout on your own.”
“You’re one of the best doctors I know,” Matthew said. “If I hadn’t realised Ethan was hiding Naveen last year, you would have easily won the fellowship competition. I was the one who almost did chest compressions on a pulmonary embolism.”
“And I maintain that you’d have figured it out a second later,” Aurora said, with a small smile. “And I’m sorry, Aunt Harper. I don’t mean to sound like a broken record.”
“Don’t apologise. I’m sorry I kept pushing you too far last year.”
Harper opened her arms and Aurora hugged her tightly. It was the first time since he’d met them that they looked like aunt and niece.
“You know what?” Aurora said, as Harper released her. “You should take the job at Kenmore, if you want it. Realistically we probably wouldn’t work together that much…and we can tell people that you were hired because of me.”
Harper burst out laughing, throwing her head back.
“We really could, couldn’t we? I haven’t decided yet, but you’ll be the first to know.” She kissed Aurora’s cheek and smiled warmly at Matthew. “I have to get back to the gala so I’ll leave you two for now. Enjoy the rest of your night.”
She walked tall, back into the party. Aurora approached Matthew.
“Sorry for sort of dragging you into that,” she said, sheepishly.
“Don’t worry about it. Do you feel better? It felt like some of those things needed to be said.”
“Oh yes, I think it was a long time coming. But it’s given me a perspective I hadn’t considered before and now I kind of want to go back to the gala and talk to rich people.” She giggled. “Is that weird?”
“No, it’s why we’re here!” Matthew said. “What are we waiting for? You need to impress.”
The two of them walked into the gala, side-by-side, and Aurora was immediately pulled over by a group of donors. She was all big smiles and firm handshakes, but Matthew had had enough of schmoozing and just wanted to find Rafael. He couldn’t find him in the crowd, and he wasn’t at the bar either.
“Enjoying the night?”
Ethan was at the bar, looking weary. Matthew had barely seen him all night. Rubbing elbows with high society was one of Ethan’s least favourite hobbies, and he wore the same tux from last year’s Miami formal.
“I am. Are you?”
“Ask me when I get a drink.”
On cue the bartender slid a glass of whisky towards Ethan, who downed it. Matthew winced.
“How did it come to this, Matthew? We should be solving cases, not kissing the asses of smug idiots in bow ties.”
“It’s what we have to do if we want more cases.” Matthew wasn’t sure what else to say when Ethan had spent a good amount of time shooting down alternative ideas to bring in money.
“I always thought I’d do whatever it took to save lives…until I didn’t. My morals got in the way. But you managed to do whatever it takes whilst sticking as close to them as you could.”
“Just because someone’s rich, it doesn’t mean they don’t get sick. There’s nothing unethical about what we’re doing. The point of the gala is to help everyone.”
Ethan sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose before ordering another whiskey.
“I suppose what’s really weighing on me is how I let Naveen down with my inaction. If I hadn’t been so stubborn, could I have actually helped the hospital? Would the situation be as dire as it is now? How do I tell Naveen his legacy fell apart because of me?”
“Well, I suppose you would say exactly that.”
Ethan paled as he faced his close friend, who had drifted over without either of them noticing. Naveen didn’t look angry or disappointed, in fact, he looked like someone who had been expecting the conversation.
“You know it’s rude to eavesdrop,” Ethan finally said.
“I could never resist gossip. Besides, it sounds like it concerns me,” Naveen said, strolling to Ethan’s other side and leaning against the bar. “Ethan, do you remember what I said when I first built the diagnostics team? That it was never about my legacy, or even about Edenbrook. It was only the mission.”
“For the people with nowhere else to go.”
“Precisely. I have every faith that you’ll carry on that legacy with you for the rest of your career, regardless of what happens to Edenbrook. As will you, Dr Valentine: your dedication to your patients is one of your greatest strengths.”
Matthew smiled a little at the compliment, and even Ethan seemed reassured.
“Well…I intend to be a thorn in the side of every stuck-up board director I know.”
“I wouldn’t expect anything less, my friend.”
With a chuckle, the two older doctors hugged each other tightly.
“Ready to keep fighting the good fight?” Naveen asked.
“Lead the way. By the way, Matthew,” Ethan added. “Someone’s here for you.”
“What?”
Matthew turned to where Ethan had indicated, only to see Rafael standing there. He was fiddling with the end of his jacket sleeve, but when their eyes met he smiled and held out his hand.
“May I have this dance?”
“I’d love to…wait, are you sure you’re up for it?”
“As long as we take it at half-speed, I’ll be OK.”
“In that case there’s nothing I’d like more.”
Matthew took Raf’s hand and they walked over to the edge of the dance floor. They kept it simple, just swaying together on the spot.
“Sorry I just disappeared. I’ve been a pretty lacklustre prom date…” Matthew sighed.
“No, you’re great, and you have a duty here. Besides, I ran into some of my old paramedic friends and I’ve been catching up with them.”
“That’s great.” Matthew paused. “Do you miss them at all?”
“I miss having them around, but I don’t feel the need to go back to that kind of work, if that makes sense?”
“I get it. Maybe you can meet them for after-work drinks sometime.”
“Maybe. For now though…”
Raf pulled Matthew closer. Matthew smiled, sliding his arms around Raf’s neck and propping his head on his shoulder. This was precisely where he wanted to be, and he didn’t care if anyone might be staring at them.
He raised his head to gaze up at Raf and was surprised to find his eyes had gone distant.
“Hey.” He gently rested his hand on Raf’s cheek. “Everything alright?”
“Hm? Oh. Yes, sorry,” Raf said, blinking back into the room. “It’s just…I have these moments sometimes where I think about everything I’d have missed out on if things had gone…differently. Everything I’d have missed out on with you.”
“Rafael…”
Matthew reached up to kiss Rafael on the lips, softly and sweetly, hoping to keep him in the present moment. Raf rested his forehead against Matthew’s. His eyes were burning in an old, familiar way.
“Is there somewhere private we could go?” he asked. “I really want to be alone with just you right now.”
Thrilled excitement started building deep in Matthew’s stomach. He slipped his hand through Raf’s and led him away from the gala, down a nearby corridor. He passed several patient rooms until he found the first empty room: the on-call room.
“Where else but the hospital dorm?” Raf chuckled, looking around. “You don’t have a hospital RA likely to break up the fun, do you?”
“Well, we have Zaid, who is working a double shift…better safe than sorry.” Matthew quickly locked the door, then turned back to Raf, taking him in. His smart suit, his curly brown hair…his kind, gentle eyes that were looking at him eagerly…hungrily…
“Raf, kiss me already!”
“Gladly.”
It took steps for the two of them to meet in the middle of the room and start passionately kissing. Matthew ran his hands up Raf’s arms and down his chest as Raf’s hands tangled in his hair. They kissed with a passion that made Matthew’s toes curl and his cheeks flush. When they finally broke apart, they were both breathing hard.
“How does it still feel that amazing every time we do that?” Raf murmured.
“I was just wondering the same thing.”
Once the dam had broken, they couldn’t stop. Raf kissed him again and again, all the while pulling them down onto a bottom bunk where he suddenly slowed down to leave a long lingering kiss on Matthew’s lips.
“Mmm…I’ve missed this,” Matthew murmured.
“Believe me, I know exactly how you feel.” Raf cupped his face tenderly. “Before we go any further though…I know it’s been a long time so are you OK with this? I don’t want to pressure you into anything.”
Matthew took hold of Raf’s hands.
“I want to go all the way with you, as far as you’re willing. I didn’t bring you into a room full of beds for no reason,” he added with a wicked smirk.
“I hoped you might say that.”
Encouraged, Matthew started undoing Raf’s tie, but he was extremely flustered and couldn’t get his fingers to move right. Raf laughed, and took over with ease; within seconds he was stood over Matthew and his suit was on the floor. Matthew held his breath as he looked him over. Raf was slowly starting to build his body back, but Matthew’s attention was caught by the faded surgical scar that ran down the middle of his torso: his souvenir from the subway crash, the surgery that Matthew had joined to save his life. He reached out, stopping his fingers a few inches away from Rafael’s skin. Raf took his hand and placed it gently over the scar. His skin was warm.
“Does it ever bother you these days?” Matthew asked.
“It itches sometimes.”
Matthew stood up, keeping his hand on Raf’s stomach.
“You look good…may I join you?”
And within seconds, Matthew’s tux had joined Raf’s suit on the floor and they were back to lying entangled on the bottom bunk. Seeing his scar had reminded Matthew of certain things, and he started kissing Raf with reckless abandon – his neck, his cheek, his shoulders, his stomach – as though he might disappear at any moment. That is, until Raf caught hold of his chin and looked him in the eye.
“Matthew…you know I’m not going anywhere, right?”
“Ssh,” Matthew grinned, blushing under Raf’s hand. “I’m appreciating you.”
“Well, I’m feeling very appreciated,” Raf sighed, sinking back onto the bed. “You’re incredible, you really are…”
Matthew wondered if he would ever stop feeling such a rush when Rafael complimented him. He hoped not.
They kissed again and again, and then their hands were going here, there and everywhere. Matthew particularly enjoyed driving Raf into a frenzy by his touch, then he saw stars as Raf returned the favour.
“I want all of you,” Raf moaned.
“You definitely have me,” Matthew gasped. “But make it last as long as you possibly can.”
“I’ll do my best…”
Raf’s body felt as strong and warm as Matthew remembered, and suddenly it was as if time didn’t exist. Whether it was their first time having sex or their twelfth time, it was not any less amazing. Raf’s touch was reverent as ever and Matthew enjoyed every minute.
Raf pulled him into his arms as he came down from his high and they cuddled close under the covers, still sweaty and breathing heavily. Raf pushed the hair off Matthew’s damp forehead with a grin.
“That was so worth the wait.”
“It really was.”
Raf propped himself up on one arm, gazing at Matthew thoughtfully, still idly playing with his hair.
“Matthew, I want to thank you.”
“What, for that?”
“Not quite what I was thinking,” Raf chuckled. “More like…I just want to thank you for being a part of my life. You’re really important to me and I…well, I just wanted you to know that. Sorry if that’s corny,” he added, shyly. “Guess the whole near-death experience thing made me…sentimental.” He lay back down, resting his head on Matthew’s chest and closing his eyes. Matthew breathed in his scent; he had to take a minute to steady himself.
“Maybe I’m getting sentimental as well, but I’m glad you’re a part of my life too. You’ve been there for me every step of the way and I can’t tell you how good it feels to have you in my corner.”
Raf looked up at him with a smile. His eyes were suspiciously shiny…and then he wiped at them with a sniff.
“Are you crying?”
“A little. But in a good way, I promise!”
There was so much that Matthew wanted to say if his throat weren’t tight with his own emotions. He slipped his hand through Rafael’s and buried his face in his hair, appreciating him more than ever.
****
They casually slipped through the doors to rejoin the gala. No one seemed to have noticed that they had slipped away.
“Do you mind if I sit a while?” Raf said. “I should probably take it easy after that.”
“No problem. Can I get you a drink?”
“If they have iced tea that would be great. Nothing alcoholic.”
Raf settled into a chair at an empty table and Matthew headed to the bar where he ordered an iced tea and a lemonade. Jackie sidled up to him as he waited.
“Hey you.”
“Hey yourself. You seem to be having fun.”
“I’m doing my best. I’m trying to pay back what I did with Panaea…but I’m also trying to have fun where I can. Speaking of…” her eyes travelled over his slightly rumpled clothes and scruffy hair that was still slightly damp along the hairline. “You got laid, didn’t you?”
“Jackie!”
But Matthew’s smile told Jackie all she needed to know.
“It’s about time!” she crowed.
“Well don’t talk about it here…”
“Hey, don’t be embarrassed! I think it’s great for you!”
“Quiet now!” Matthew sniggered as he accepted drinks from the bartender and brought them back to where Rafael was sat. He had been found by Bryce, Sienna and Keiki who had been tearing up the dancefloor.
“Hey guys. If I’d known you were coming, I’d have got more drinks!”
“Don’t worry, we can help ourselves,” Bryce said. “You guys looked happy earlier. Though we couldn’t find you for ages.” He raised his eyebrows. “Getting reacquainted, were we?”
“Eeew, guys,” Keiki groaned. She looked very pretty in a knee-length pink dress. “I thought grown-ups were sensible or something.”
“Can you blame me?” Raf grinned as Matthew sat down beside him.
“C’mon, I had to deal with comments from Jackie just now,” Matthew groaned. “Can’t a guy just enjoy his night?”
“I’m not judging,” Sienna giggled, as they all sat down at the table. “Does this mean I won’t need headphones tonight?”
“Eeeew!”
“Oh my god!”
Matthew thumped his forehead on the table as Keiki cringed into her hands. Raf laughed in delight, Bryce and Sienna laughed along with him. Matthew found himself grinning when he raised his head…but when he turned to Sienna, he noticed her eyeliner was smudged.
“Are you OK?” he asked, gently touching her arm as Bryce apologised to Keiki for the mental scars. “You look like you’ve been crying?”
“I’m OK now,” she said. “I, um, actually got talking to some of the donors about the diagnostics team and how they tried to save you guys after the attack, though I didn’t mention it was an attack. It won some sympathy and people were willing to donate, but I started thinking about Danny and kind of…spiralled. If we’d be here together, if he were still alive…or if he’d be disappointed I was using the attack for clout.”
“You weren’t using it for clout, you were talking about diagnostic work,” Mathew said, rubbing her back. “Take it from me, I’ll accept anything good that comes from the attack. If it gets more donations…so be it. It’s better than being pointless. And I think Danny would be glad to help out somehow.”
“I just hope you’re right,” Sienna sighed, leaning into him for a hug. “I miss him. Some days I think I’m doing good and moving forward, but other days all I can think about is ‘what if’.”
“Grief does that to you.” Matthew murmured. “It’ll come in waves. I don’t think you ever really ‘get over it’, you just figure out how to ride the waves.”
“Mind if I join you guys?” Kyra asked, approaching their table. She had a small notebook in her hands.
“Not at all. How’s the night going?”
Bryce, Raf and Keiki were pulled from their conversation and looked at Kyra eagerly, but the sadness behind her eyes told them she didn’t have the answer they wanted.
“It’s…not enough. We’ve raised an impressive amount but it’s just not enough.”
“…How much?”
“We’ll be able to pay off most of the hospital’s debts, but there won’t be much left to keep the hospital running after that. Departments will be closed. Honestly, you guys should consider your options.” Her eyes welled up. “I’m so sorry. I thought I could help…”
“You did help,” Bryce said firmly. “You put this whole thing together in the space of two weeks. You got the rich folk of Boston to pay our bills. That’s more than what I did.”
Sienna put her arms around Kyra reassuringly.
“Bryce is right…mostly. If we hadn’t had this party, we’d just be closing sooner. It’s not over until it’s over.”
Kyra wiped her eyes and hugged Sienna back.
“What happens if your hospital closes? Aren’t you guys still having health check-ups here?” Keiki asked.
Raf had gone quiet, but now he reached over to take Matthew’s hand.
“Dr Mirani said that when the time came he’d pass my case to Dr Carrick at Mass Kenmore.”
“My medical file has already been passed to the Kenmore oncology department,” Kyra said. “I’ll still be here accounting though. Until Edenbrook kicks me out, of course.” It was a rather weak attempt at a joke, but they smiled all the same. Matthew squeezed Raf’s hand.
“The hospital’s not closing yet,” he said. “Can we…not worry about it for the rest of tonight?”
“Heh. Sure we can.”
Matthew leaned closer.
“So…you’re sleeping over at mine after prom, right?”
Raf’s eyes lit up.
“Just try and stop me.”
Carriages were at midnight, and as the rich were chauffeured away in shiny cars, Matthew and co shuffled off the T and back to the apartment. Raf called guest privileges to use the bathroom first, and then there was another scrap between Matthew and the girls as they all wanted to use the toilet and brush their teeth, and the three girls wanted to take their make-up off. Elijah was OK; he was spending the night at Phoebe’s apartment.
As Raf waited in Matthew’s room, he folded his suit carefully over the desk chair, looking around with interest. It felt like ages since he had actually spent the night here, and he took in all the little differences. A bigger selection of work clothes hung in the wardrobe where the door had been left open. An abstract red, gold and blue painting was carefully hung on the wall. The stack of medical textbooks on the desk was taller, the notes were more frenzied. And yet the sketchbook on the floor, the family photos on the desk, and the cozy glow of the bedside lamp were exactly the same.
“At least when you move to the North End you won’t be sharing a bathroom,” Matthew sighed, finally coming into the bedroom and starting to hang up his tux.
“I thought I might be sharing a bathroom sometimes,” Raf said pointedly. Matthew chuckled as they slid into bed. They cuddled up close, the long night taking its toll. Matthew focused on the warmth of Raf’s skin.
“Hey, Matthew?”
Raf looked seconds away from falling asleep.
“I had so much more fun tonight than I did at my actual prom.”
“I’m glad,” Matthew said, content, as he kissed Raf goodnight.
His eyes were closing too, but as Raf drifted off, he thought about prom. He had nothing to compare the gala to, but Raf probably would have gone to prom with Sora. Matthew thought about what Raf had just said to him, the look in his eyes when they danced together, and the way Raf had wept when Matthew told him how glad he was to have Raf in his life. He hadn’t given Sora a second thought since they’d got back together, but as Raf slept with his head on his shoulder, Matthew couldn’t help feeling a smug sense of satisfaction.

What is The Bottled Water Production Flow Chart
The production process of bottled water is comprehensive, involving multiple stages to ensure the highest quality and safety standards. This detailed guide covers each critical step, from water treatment to bottling and packaging, and finally to the blowing line and auxiliary equipment. Here’s an overview of the main steps:
Raw Water Sourcing and Pumping
The process begins with sourcing raw water, which is then pumped into the filtration system.
The raw water pump provides the necessary pressurization for the filtration equipment.
Mechanical Filtration
A mechanical filter removes impurities such as manganese, iron, and suspended particles larger than 20 microns.
This step helps to prepare the water for further purification.
Carbon Filtration
The carbon filter further purifies the water by removing organic compounds, chlorine, and other contaminants.
This stage helps to improve the taste and odor of the water.
Reverse Osmosis (RO) System
The RO system removes dissolved salts, minerals, and microorganisms, producing high-purity water.
This step ensures the water meets the required quality standards.
Bottle Blowing
The PET preforms are heated and then blown into the desired bottle shape using a blow molding machine.
The blow molding machine combines preform heating and bottle blowing in an automated process.
Precise control of parameters like stretching speed, pressure, and timing ensures proper material distribution and bottle quality.
Bottle Washing and Sterilization
The bottles are cleaned and disinfected before filling to ensure they are free from any contaminants.
Filling and Capping
The bottles are automatically filled and capped to maintain the integrity of the product.
Inspection and Packaging
The filled bottles are inspected for any defects.
The approved bottles are then packaged for distribution.
The entire production process is designed to ensure the safety and quality of the bottled water in compliance with relevant regulations.
