FMP2 Project update 2

My last project update I highlighted how I wanted to research at least 2 conspiracies a week. I feel I’ve succeeded in this. However I feel I can still push for more if I research conspiracies that are less related to my project, therefore further expanding my pool of research. For example, instead of researching only conspiracies on Hollywood celebrities, I can research conspiracies surrounding chemical trails and more government based conspiracies.

In terms of how my skeleton corpse is going, I’ve almost finished making the skull. All that remains is painting it and adding decay. For the main body of the skeleton I plan to construct it from gorse bush branches. I originally planned to do this using real bones instead. However for a variety of reasons this was not possible. My only concern with the gorse wood branches is that they won’t look like bone, and more like wood. theres only one way to find out and thats trying it out.

(RP 4222) Major Project: Shot Angle Change

Looking at my animatic, I have been strongly considering  changing the angel of one of my shots. In the second shot of my film, there is a wide shot of the office, but the more I look at it, the more boring it feels  because it is a just simple straight forward shot, nothing to exciting to look at. So I’ve done some sketches (which can bee seen at the top) of possibly changing the camera angle to be moved slightly to the left. It isn’t much, but I feel like it something a lot more interesting to look at. Also, since I have been considering flipping the first shot to move to left side of the Sheriff’s building, changing the second shot to a similar angel will hopefully keep thing more consistent. I will do an animatic text first and see how it looks.

Evaluation:

This project has been a rollercoaster if I’m being honest. I have really enjoyed working with Katherine and Kieran but I think that we all agree that next time maybe we don’t work as a group as even though as friends it’s great, the three of us have comping skills as our main strength we decided that maybe if we support each other and do separate projects.

Anyway, I really feel that I have learnt so much from this project I am happy with the overall product, I know for a fact that I have learnt some valuable lessons throughout this. I think that the pre-production work really opened my eyes, such as writing the script, dealing with actors and other things. 

I was a bit disappointed with a few things in the project such as the filming process and mainly the fact that I didn’t use Nuke. I used nuke to test out some footage but not for the final thing. I found myself more focused on the glitches and the overall edit of the trailer than advancing my Nuke skills.

Next project I think I want to tone down my production side and work on just one or two shots and comp them in nuke as this is something I missed in this work. Overall though, I am happy with how we worked as a team as we didn’t have any drama between the three of us, only with external circumstances. 

I’m sad to be finishing second year as it feels as if it has gone very quickly but I’m excited for the future and third year to develop my skills even more.

There is one very minor thing we need to fix before we can upload this properly, which is the shaking on the first shot of the box. We forgot to stabilise it! Oh well, we will fix this in due course.

Research

With an idea down I went into researching my chosen subject.

Initially I wanted the piece to be live action but quite often poems have illustrations so I decided to go down this route instead. 

I was told by Jack that the one of the best inspirations is tales of friendship, what I love about this is the way everything is layered making it feel like a pop up book and adding a really nice parallax. These short stories were done by bate studios of which Jack worked on. 

He said that they photocopied the certain elements from the book and then layered them on card in Nuke in order to create the parallax, I wont need to worry about photocopying, but the way it showcases the elements of the book and the way it looks overall is something that I really do like. 

Another main inspiration for this idea was the traditional animations from Disney were they would often use illustrations drawn on large pains of glass, these were then layered in order to give the illusion of depth. One of the best ones that shows this is the ending scene from the film Bambi, it has a lovely optical illusion when the camera zooms out through the trees. This sort of look is something I would like to implicate.

Evaluation

When given this brief I was so nervous to make sure it was good. I had a lot of ideas but wanted to try and focus on cinematography more. I think now maybe I should’ve pushed myself to attempt more visual effects. An open brief intimidates me I think, I just can’t narrow it down myself, I like being given a project that’s a bit more specific and narrowing down from there. I liked a lot of my original ideas but kind of just went with a risk getting inspiration from something online that wasn’t my story.

I decided to do this project entirely on my own without anyone’s help because I think in the past I just want to follow my idea through and then if I’m using my family as well it’ll be easy to direct him and more comfortable so in theory it would turn out nicer as I had more time as well. It didn’t really turn out that way although it was quite nice filming alone, it took a lot more time setting up and i still had the same frustrations as working with someone else which I thought would go away. 

What I like about the video is the colour grade I think I did a decent job as it wasn’t white balanced as often as I should have. I also had a lot of fun colour grading Rasmus’ work that was probably my favourite part of this whole project to be honest. He had such great footage, shot perfectly and I could learn a bit more about Davinci which was quite intuitive to pick up actually! I like how the tapes have come together, just the look of them feels nostalgic. I also like the composition and location, I’m glad I could shoot at my Grandma’s house because it just had this old person vibe that I wanted. I think my dad was a decent actor as well.

I don’t like that the narrative of the story is a bit weak. I kind of just scrambled at the end to think of something because I gave up on the original idea of the ebay ad because to be honest most of the shots that I shots for it just looked bad anyway so I wanted to think of a different narrative with the shots I’ve got. Which in hindsight probably wasn’t a great idea and I should’ve just stuck with the original narrative. That’s the worst thing about the video for me. Oh also the visual effects are pretty bad, the nuke file was massive and doing every little thing it could to help get it right but for some reason it just doesn’t blend in nicely, I think it’s because the screen is so flat there’s no reflection or anything so I couldn’t really give it much depth.

Overall, I think I didn’t enjoy filming this project as much as I thought, when I was actually behind the camera it was generally good it was just moving all the equipment and setting up and things would’ve gone with more ease if someone was with me to help out. If I’d fully thought through the narrative a bit more beforehand it would’ve turned out a lot nicer. In the long run, I want to do less emotional things because I don’t want tojust be creating the same type of things, it’ll get boring. So going to try and mix it up next year and hopefully delve more into cinematography, VFX and colour grading.

FMP2 Project update

So far the project has been going well. I’ve almost finished making the skull for my corpse and I’ve collected some pig bones to create the skeleton. I planned this week to gather more bones when I went round my friends house in the county. However unfortunately that never ended up happening. This has now left me in a bit of a tricky situation as I don’t have nearly enough bones to go back to college with next week. 

I plan to spend Monday the 18th finishing the clay skull and then it’ll need to dry, so I won’t be able to paint it or do anymore work on it. With the Tuesday and Wednesday I planned to use the bones I was meant to gather this week to start making the skeleton of my corpse. However without the necessary bones this has left me in a bit of a tricky situation. I could always spend the Tuesday and Wednesday doing research and blog work. However this feels like a wasted opportunity of access to the workshop. I believe I have a remedy to this issue…

While on a dog walk yesterday I stumbled across a piece of branch from a gauze bush. It was gnarled and swisted, it very much resembled old bone. I feel collected some gauze bush branches of various thicknesses will be a good alternative for animal bones. I also feel wood will be a far easier material to work with, as I can carve away and fit pieces together with ease compered with bone.

(RP 4222) Major Project Research: Star VS The Forces of Evil Dungeon Backgrounds

Since I was looking at ‘Star Vs The Forces of Evil’ backgrounds for inspiration, I found a few scenes based in dungeons and though  these were quite helpful to look because my film, majority of the time, is based in a cellar and quite like the backgrounds in this show. They have a bit more a damp cold feel compared to what I want, since my film is based in a dessert I want more of a dry feel.

3rd Year Short Film Help:

As apart of my FMP I said I wanted to branch out and help out some other people with their compositing. Jack introduced me to some 3rd years which needed help with a few shots of their film. I found this an extremely fun task to do as it was quite challenging. I added these into my submission files but they asked if I didn’t put the shots anywhere for confidential reasons. I wish I had a little more time on these shots but overall I’m pretty happy with how they ended up!
