The old man gives her some reward money for returning the wallet. Ida rushes to see if she can buy the doll, but has second thoughts when she thinks about how much her family could use the money. The film ends with the family celebrating an unexpectedly Merry Christmas.

Grizzlies naturally attack any Salmon or Beehive they see the way a wolf will hunt sheep, or a fox/ocelot will hunt chickens and are neutral to the player as long as they keep their distance or the player isn’t near to any one of their cubs. Maybe even like turtles, bears could naturally inhabit caves and have a ‘home’ cave they return to reproduce or go to at the end of every day.

2. Swamp-exclusive mobs

I think swamps need to be a little more swampy. It seems kind of silly to me that wetlands are some of the most diverse biomes on Earth, and yet there’s nothing to populate the murky depths of swamps. Alligators/Crocodiles, Snapping Turtles, Frogs, just something to make the swamps a little more interesting or a little more dangerous to explore! Maybe even a new spider or creeper variant similar to the way husks and strays are an exclusive zombie and skeleton types for desert and snow biomes? 

3. Expansion of existing foods, new crops, and manufactured food

I think perhaps new crop types are an order given that we’ve had the same ones for a pretty long time now, and I firmly believe that existing foods are worth expansion.

For instance, the state of baked goods in Minecraft is pretty dull. Most of the baked goods are about nigh useless, apart from maybe Pumpkin Pie. If we can craft one type of pie, why can’t we craft others? Like, for instance, Apple Pie? We have apples in the game that aren’t used for many recipes outside of one (extremely expensive) late-game food, so why not try to give apples a use for early or midgame players? Or, how about we bake some of our new sweet berries into a pie? It’s not like we’re using berries for much else in-game! 

Oh and, while we’re here, shouldn’t we be able to place pies the way we place cakes? Think about how cool it could be to leave a pie sitting out the way a cake does, it’d be great for little suburban home builds with warm pies sitting in the windows, bakery and other cafe or restaurant-type builds, or just convenience for a group of people or solo players who want to come home and munch on some pie.

I’d personally like to see chocolate added to Minecraft as well, the fact that we have cocoa beans but not chocolate seems kind of odd to me personally, although I understand it is sort of a left-field addition.

I would REALLY like to see a way to cook eggs if I’m honest, but maybe that’s just me? I understand if this seems like a cheap source of food given the inherent frequency of how and when chickens lay eggs.

I also think soups need to be expanded in the game. The fact we have pumpkins but not pumpkin soup is a crime against humanity. I know pumpkins are already used in the recipe for pumpkin pie, but, I enjoy variety with my crops. And besides, if wheat and sugar cane can have versatility as crops, why not pumpkins? I’d also really like to see another kind of meat stew (besides rabbit stew anyway, rabbits are kind of rare in my playtime experience.) or a vegetable stew of some sort added to the game. Fact is, players don’t get many opportunities to craft soups in the game, and I think adding some new soups could help that!

I’d also kinda like to see a new veggie or maybe even a mushroom added to game, as I feel the pickings are pretty slim there, turnips come to mind in terms of a new veggie, just something to round out the existence of carrots, potatoes, and beetroot, and for mushrooms, I’d actually kinda like to see truffles added to the game. Maybe you could use pigs to hunt them, and use them to breed Zombie Pigmen in the nether, or make them friendly toward you? I dunno, I think there’s an idea there. 

4. Baby Creepers and Baby Spiders

Every other common monster has baby counterparts, except for Creepers and Spiders. While this may seem like a ‘no why would you do that’ sort of thing, what’s wrong with a little bit of a new challenge here and there? Plus, baby creepers could deal less damage and explode in a smaller radius than adults, while Baby Spiders could have way less health (maybe you could even kill them by stepping on them?). And, come on, don’t tell me you’re not enthralled by the idea of a tiny creeper or tiny spider doing little high-pitched hisses.

Oh, and, I think Creepers should be able to wear helmets. No other armor piece, just helmets.

5. A way to obtain specific player heads without using commands in Creative Mode.

This speaks for itself honestly. I have wanted to use custom heads for my builds SO many times, but I find spawning them in incredibly tedious and annoying.

6. Updating/Varying Temples and other archaic pre-generated structures

We have sprawling Ocean Monuments and Mansions and more organic and believable villages now, I think it’s time some of the older temples got an update too, or at least the ability to vary a little more and look more ruinous? 

7. Horse-drawn carts or carriages.

While I feel like this is kind of unnecessary given that most equine mobs can just carry chests, a way to transport your fellow players, as well as larger stocks of items across a large distance using a horse or donkey seems like a novel idea to me. Perhaps you could link up carts/carriages with leads to make your epic caravan even bigger!

8. Expansion of the Nether

The Nether isn’t really very scary anymore, and it’s fucking UNINTERESTING! I feel like the Nether could benefit from individual biomes or perhaps more unique structures? Perhaps a hellish-looking forest biome full of dead trees, Soul-sand lava beaches, zombie pigman villages, gnarly giant mushroom biomes, nether outposts with loot guarded by blazes and wither skeletons, unfinished portals, Nether dungeons with skeleton or blaze spawners and more exclusive loot, I dunno! Just something to make the Nether scarier and less barren!

9. Cave/Mining Expansion

Given that everyone and their grandma has already said the caves need an update, I’ll keep it short and sweet:

Caves are boring and uninteresting, we’ve been looking at the same caves for too damn long. Add more unique cave types, more minerals, and above all, more REASONS to mine! The game’s called MINECRAFT? Y’know, you MINE things in it?

10. A use for Dragon Eggs

I don’t care what it is, let us make dragon omelets, re-fight the Ender Dragon in the overworld, cool potions, just let me do SOMETHING with this egg, Mojang, I’m sick of feeling like it has some mysterious higher purpose!

11. Giant Flowers

Okay this one’s more personal but, I think it’d be kinda cool if we could grow giant flowers the same way we grow giant mushrooms. That is all.

The Anatomy of Melancholy, 22

Surveillance, drug culture tw’s. Let’s have some character development. I was originally going to cram 22-24 into one chapter, but 21 was long enough as it was uh.

Upon returning to the pharmacy, Melancholy went right to the office garden to collect a sizable quantity of hubflower blossoms, then flew straight into the process of extracting a large batch of hubeine. He smashed the flowers and threw them into a glass vessel, and agitated it all with water. The wait time between iterations of adding more water were what killed him. He hated being left alone inside his own head, in that very moment more than anything.

Angel’s going to find out. It’s going to report my treason to the DIA. And it’s going to get remotely switched to hostile and slice me to bits.

But did it count as treason, anymore, to do what he was doing? He shook the thought from his Russian brain. They weren’t in wartime now. And the police had begun utilizing Psycho leading up to the apocalypse. Why was he even doing this for Jared? Some nebulous threat of violence against him? What was keeping him tethered here amid this near-total anarchofascism? He’d told Jared to his face that security dominated his motivation, but he stopped receiving any sense of security the moment the arrangement shifted focus to Psycho. But all this was his own negotiation of the statutes surrounding the protected status of manufacturing this chem. Maybe, maybe he could ply Angel with the dishonest truth that he was working with hubeine, not morphine, or cyclomorphine. He couldn’t make peace with the thought of lying to Angel, and fell apart over rehearsing all manner of half-truth and inaccurate definitions in lieu of faith.

At the smell of burning latex, his finger withdrew from his platysmal scar, and he gasped to find he hadn’t added water to the hub like he would have sworn he had. He squinted with an exhausted groan, seeing how the plant matter had scorched to the glass. With tongs and a grimace, he pulled it off the hot plate and set it in the sink.

The glasses came off, and his face went to his hands. What was wrong with him? He could expect this kind of behavior from a shell-shocked veteran, but he hadn’t survived unthinkable use of weaponized brutality and violence face to face, hadn’t survived artillery, hadn’t-- had survived being frozen, he supposed. This couldn’t be post-traumatic stress. It couldn’t be. He hadn’t been through enough to justify such a diagnosis.

What a pathetic crisis of identity, to be unable to even keep my reality straight. Waking up, it’s two hundred years after a nuclear apocalypse, and the first rational life I find is a band of lawless chem-driven hooligans. Just how much of this is real? Doesn’t seem like any of it could be.

He dismissed the prickling crawling up his left arm and eyed the health page of his Pip-Boy on the other arm, flipping to the section indicating all the pharmacological deficits he had inured. Mentats, alcohol, Jet, Calmex, and an opioid return that had to be the Melancholia. And that was just what the diagnostics knew of. Liver and kidney function strained. Respiration mildly suppressed. Motor skills significantly compromised. Vision, alertness, and verbal capacity all dulled. He wondered whether these hallucinations, or episodes, or whatever they were had factored into the device’s metrics of his constitution. He knew he was a mess. But up until now, he’d done his best to simply ignore it.

The episodes had nothing to do with Jet. He knew they preceded any of his Jet use. But if he couldn’t blame it on the Jet, what could he blame it on? Had the Melancholia expired? Of all the food sources he’d trusted, it had been his meal replacement cocktail. Up until now, he’d blamed his poor alimentary constitution on the other questionably preserved foodstuffs on which he’d subsisted, but now even his Melancholia was suspect. --No, it had been the one thing his stomach could tolerate day to day. His eyes widened with stunned optimism. With a fresh source of opioids, he could continue making it fresh. It had gotten him through his tenure at Deenwood, and it could sustain him long-term. Perhaps he’d get lucky, and the Gregory’s salt--no, Melancholy’s salt--would prove more effective and compatible, with fewer drawbacks.

At the next chance, he’d have to rule out the supplementary beverage for his episodes. Surely, the problem wasn’t inside him. The fact of pharmacology was, as he knew it, that there was no deficit of physiology or character which chems couldn’t fix. Better living through chems. He couldn’t blame a chem for having unintended or entirely undesirable effects on a man, two centuries past its prime. Nothing lasted forever... not even him.

He was past his prime. And it was past his bedtime. He drank one of his remaining seven Melancholia in lieu of dinner and let himself turn in for the night, and slept on Eleanor’s couch.

The buzzing of the intercom awoke ‘Choly, and he aped over the desk to depress the button.

“I, yes. Yes, what is it.” He felt for his glasses and put them on.

“Your soap has arrived, you scrawny little weirdo.”

He knew from voice alone to expect Barb’s face at the front door.

“I’ll be right down. I’m not decent.”

“Who is these days?”

He rolled his eyes instead of answering. He donned his braces and wheeled himself downstairs, waving for Angel to follow him.

With the front door cracked, he poked the muzzle of his rifle out, only for the buzzcut raider to shove the door open all the way. Both his feet planted to either side of the door, and the muzzle went right to her chest. He swallowed and stared up at her with determination.

“--Y, ou can leave it right here,” he appreciated, not moving as he tossed a glance to the shopping cart filled to the brim with boxes of Abraxo. “Angel can help me bring it inside.”

“I’ve been in your place, Melancholy. What gives, I’m not welcome?” Smacking at gum under the bandanna concealing the lower half of her face, she tried to look inside around to either side of Angel, who had come up very close behind its owner. “I still can’t believe you live all alone in there. That building is huge. Super creepy. Goddamn.”

“Jared wouldn’t like it if you distracted me from my work. And believe me, you’re already fast encroaching on distracting me.”

“Whatever. Enjoy your stupid soap.”

“It’s smart soap, actually.” He shoved back from the door with his syringer still aimed at Barb, letting Angel swoop in to pull the shopping cart in off the stoop. “Good day, Barb.”

“Good day!” Angel seconded cheerfully.

“Creep,” she jeered as the Handy shut the door.

On their way upstairs, ‘Choly and Angel did not fit in the elevator with their prize.

“I’m not alone in the pharmacy,” ‘Choly quipped. “Who’re you, chopped liver?”

“I’ll take the stairs, Sir, and meet you at the third story. It’s no matter.”

Upon arriving at the third floor, ‘Choly kept the pocket doors open with the butt of his rifle until Angel could come up and retrieve the cart.

“People just don’t understand how wonderfully programmed General Atomics robotics are. You’re not some... thing.”

“Ah, well. I’ve come to pay it no mind. Those who matter don’t mind, and those who mind don’t matter!”

‘Choly smiled, taking a few boxes of soap into his lap and leaving the cart in the lobby for the time. He started his day off working from the rote recipe for cooking his own Mentats. Measuring out the laundry powder, he dropped the glass beaker and it shattered, punctuating the revelations of his condition from the night before. He sat there for some time just staring at all the soap he’d wasted, only to have Angel come through with a broom and dustpan without missing a beat.

“Sir, you really must start off the day with a square meal and a fresh pot of coffee. You’re not quite of full faculties. Remember that you’re not a morning person. Be patient with yourself!”

“You’re right. You’re very often right.” Slowly his slack face picked up into another smile. “Since when did you have therapist algorithms?”

“Since you needed me to have them, I suppose. I’m programmed to exhibit an interest in my owner’s well-being. Of course I care. So! Tell me, you’ll have some nice fresh fruit with your sweet roll? I can fry you up some Cram, too, so I can get some protein in you as well.”

“I’m most interested in the promise of coffee.”

“I wouldn’t know you at all if I didn’t know that much. Ha Ha! Let’s get you all well and awake.”

All this time, I’ve thought Angel needed to be reprogrammed, to have algorithms updated and added. But I’m the one who needs a shift in priorities and perspective. ...Maybe it wasn’t not wholly wrong for it to have adopted a violent streak in my absence after all.

After breakfast and a face-washing, the chemist felt much more himself. He rolled his hair back fresh, and sat down once again to craft Mentats. This time, he started with the brain fungus, reduced to a paste in an alkali broth, and spread a solid layer of laundry soap atop them. He’d gotten ahead of himself before, measuring the dry before he’d even macerated the wet. Rather than apply heat, he applied ventilation, to facilitate the desiccation of the fungal tissues as the Abraxo soaked up the mushroom’s milk. He presumed such a large shipment of soap had been nicked from a nearby laundromat. Once the moisture had been all but completely driven off, he pulverized the pan of material and emptied the mixture into the lab’s modest pill mold press machine.

‘Choly picked one up from the collection bin to the side, and admired the MT impression he’d selected as customary of the pill imprint code for Mentats--an entendre of its namesake and the company which held its branding. If only the layman had ever known the wonder-pill only comprised two very unconventional ingredients. He stuck it in his mouth and let the waxy tablet dissolve with a smile.

He’d forgotten just how starkly saponified they really were. The bicentenarian holdovers on which he’d subsisted up until then were so brittle and chalky by comparison. Nearly effervescent, the effect took immediately, and at last he felt genuinely alert.

Tinning up the fruits of his efforts, he whistled as he spent the afternoon restocking his shelves with Mentats, and wondering what kind of pill press imprints the Wasteland might ever seek of him as a mark of authenticity, not at all unlike the wax seal of ministry. The choicest iconography he could imagine for something of his own design, the mark of the poppy could provide his craft the designation of some arcane letters of last resort: to take his medicine was to hold a potentially fail-deadly conversation, a mutually assured destruction of the ego. Who wanted to be himself when he could become... nothing at all?

If his operations succeeded as fully as he developed the optimism that they would succeed, he would have to discuss with Jared the means to patent confections such as the Berry Mentat, and label them as irrefutably having been crafted by his hand. Any self-deserving artisan had a signature, didn’t he?

But in the mean time... 'Choly currently stared down the endeavor of synthesizing from hubeine a cyclical alkaloid analogous to cyclomorphine. After pacing for a spell, he disengaged progress in favor of some rest time, and he retired to the break room downstairs for dinner.

‘We Are All Accumulating Mountains of Things’

It’s easier than ever to buy things online. It’s so easy that Ryan Cassata sometimes does it in his sleep. Cassata, a 24-year-old singer/songwriter and actor from Los Angeles, recently got a notification from Amazon that a package had been shipped to his apartment, but he didn’t remember buying anything. When he logged onto his account and saw that a fanny pack and some socks were on the way, he remembered: A few nights back, he had woken up in the middle of the night to browse--and apparently shop on--Amazon.

He shops when he’s awake, too, buying little gadgets like an onion chopper, discounted staples like a 240-pack of gum, and decorations like a Himalayan salt lamp. The other day, he almost bought a pizza pool float, until he remembered that he doesn’t have a pool. “I don’t really need most of the stuff,” he tells me.

Thanks to a perfect storm of factors, Americans are amassing a lot of stuff. Before the advent of the internet, we had to set aside time to go browse the aisles of a physical store, which was only open a certain number of hours a day. Now, we can shop from anywhere, anytime--while we’re at work, or exercising, or even sleeping. We can tell Alexa we need new underwear, and in a few days, it will arrive on our doorstep. And because of the globalization of manufacturing, that underwear is cheaper than ever before--so cheap that we add it to our online shopping carts without a second thought. “There’s no reason not to shop--because clothing is so cheap, you feel like, ‘why not?’ There’s nothing lost in terms of the hit on your bank account,” Elizabeth Cline, the author of Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion, told me.

Shopping online also feels good. Humans get a dopamine hit from buying stuff, according to research by Ann-Christine Duhaime, a professor of neurosurgery at Harvard Medical School. “As a general rule, your brain tweaks you to want more, more, more--indeed, more than those around you--both of ‘stuff’ and of stimulation and novelty,” Duhaime wrote in a Harvard Business Review essay last year. Online shopping allows us to get that dopamine hit, and then also experience delayed gratification when the order arrives a few days later, which may make it more physiologically rewarding than shopping in stores.

Sites like Amazon have made it especially easy to shop. In 1999, the Seattle retailer patented a one-click buying process, which allows customers to purchase something without entering their shipping address or credit card info. It launched its Prime program in 2005, and now more than 100 million people have signed on to pay $119 a year for “free” two-day shipping. As a result, most other major retailers offer free shipping too. Returning stuff is a little more difficult--shoppers usually have to print a label and then go to the post office or a UPS or FedEx site to return packages. Many wait too long, or decide the hassle isn’t worth it because the stuff was cheap anyway. A recent NPR/Marist poll found that nine in 10 consumers rarely or never return stuff they’ve bought online.

Justine Montoya, a caregiver in Los Angeles, buys all sorts of stuff online--baby formula, clothes, household goods. She estimates that she shops online twice a week. “It’s just so easy--you click a button, and it’s on its way,” she told me.

In the last few months alone, I bought an $18 smart watch from Wish.com that I will probably never use, a second Kindle because it was on sale and I am worried my first Kindle is going to die soon, an electric space heater I no longer need, and a pair of wireless earbuds that I had hoped would allow me to charge my iPhone and listen to music at the same time, but that instead just fall out of my ears whenever I put them on. I also bought, on Amazon, a (used) book about hiking in the Sierras for $1.99, only to find the exact same book in a box of my stuff in my parents’ basement. I didn’t return any of it.

In 2017, Americans spent $240 billion--twice as much as they’d spent in 2002--on goods like jewelry, watches, books, luggage, and telephones and related communication equipment, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, which adjusted those numbers for inflation. Over that time, the population grew just 13 percent. Spending on personal care products also doubled over that time period. Americans spent, on average, $971.87 on clothes last year, buying nearly 66 garments, according to the American Apparel and Footwear Association. That’s 20 percent more money than they spent in 2000. The average American bought 7.4 pairs of shoes last year, up from 6.6 pairs in 2000.

All told, “we are all accumulating mountains of things,” said Mark A. Cohen, the director of retail studies at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business. He sometimes asks his students to count the number of things they have on them in class, and once they start counting up gadgets and cords and accessories, they end up near 50. “Americans have become a society of hoarders,” Cohen said. Montoya said she has more stuff now that she has started shopping online: “It’s easier to accumulate more, and it’s easier to spend more.”

At the same time we are amassing all this stuff, Americans are taking up more space. Last year, the average size of a single-family house in America was 2,426 square feet, a 23 percent increase in size from two decades ago, according to the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies. The number of self-storage units is rapidly increasing too: There are around 52,000 such facilities nationally; two decades ago, there were half that number.

Of course, not everyone is a part of this hoarding revolution. There are people who can’t or don’t shop online, because they don’t have credit cards or because they are barely making ends meet. Only about 29 percent of households with incomes under $25,000 are members of Amazon Prime, according to Kantar Consulting. Some people are embracing the zero waste movement, or have followed the example of the author Ann Patchett, who published a widely-circulated op-ed in The New York Times about how she resolved to stop shopping for a year. When she ceased buying things like lip gloss and lotion and hair products, she started finding half-used versions of them under the sink, and realized she hadn’t needed new things after all. “The things we buy and buy and buy are like a thick coat of Vaseline smeared on glass,” she wrote. “We can see some shapes out there, light and dark, but in our constant craving for what we may still want, we miss life’s details.”

But most Americans are not curtailing their shopping habits. And as consumers demand cheaper clothing, electronics, and other goods, manufacturers are spending less to make them, which sometimes means they fall apart more quickly. The share of large household appliances that had to be replaced within five years grew to 13 percent in 2013, up from seven percent in 2004. Cheap clothes might lose their shape after a wash or two, or get holes after a few tumbles in the dryer; electronics become obsolete quickly and need to be replaced. While some of this stuff can be recycled or resold, often, it ends up in landfills. In 2015, the most recent year for which data is available, Americans put 16 million tons of textiles in the municipal waste stream, a 68 percent increased from 2000. We tossed 34.5 million tons of plastics, a 35 percent increase from 2000, according to data from the Environmental Protection Agency. Over that same time period, the population grew just 14 percent.

“Sometimes, people sit down and cry when they see the amount of garbage we produce in a day,” said Robert Reed, a spokesman for Recology, which handles recycling for West Coast cities like San Francisco. Centered in America’s tech capital, Recology has seen an increase in discarded electronics, including products with lithium batteries, Reed told me. In 2016, a lithium battery fire burnt down a waste management facility in San Mateo.

The 16,000 students who live in dorms at Michigan State University left behind 147,946 pounds of goods like clothing, towels, and appliances when they moved out this year, a 40 percent increase from 2016, according to Kat Cooper, a spokeswoman. The university packs up these goods and donates to them to its surplus store, so that incoming students can buy used, rather than new, stuff. In recent years, dorm cleaners have been finding so many packages of unopened food and toiletries that the university started a program to get students to donate leftover food and toiletries to local organizations like food banks when they move out. This year, it collected 900 pounds of personal care items and 4,000 pounds of nonperishable food items to donate. Pomona College has seen the volume of packages delivered grow by 325 percent in the last 12 years, according to Patricia Vest, a spokeswoman; it, too, asks students to donate unused goods to a resale program. This year, it diverted 42 tons of clothes, furniture, and office supplies.

The Internet has also made it easier to recycle some of the stuff Americans buy and no longer want. Online consignment shops like thredUP and Poshmark help people buy and sell clothes from their closets. Secondhand stores like Goodwill have moved online, too, selling the growing pile of goods they get on the Internet.

But the ability to easily get rid of stuff may be making people feel a little better about buying things they don’t need, and motivating them to buy even more. On a recent weekday, I stopped by the massive warehouse where workers from Goodwill of San Francisco, San Mateo and Marin sort donations to Bay Area stores. Some of the stuff that’s been donated has never been used. Near the front of the warehouse stands a rack of clothes with their original tags on--a $245 blue Nicole Miller cocktail dress, $88 Kit and Ace pants, a pale green J. Jill blouse. “We are seeing items that have been barely used or not used, because when people shop online, it’s a lot of work to return it,” William Rogers, the president of the Goodwill, told me. Rogers himself is guilty--when we met at the warehouse, he dropped off four wall sconces he’d bought a year ago on Amazon. He had tried to put them up, decided they didn’t look good, and brought them to donate.

Secondhand shops can’t resell all of the donations they get. Cline estimates that 85 percent of the clothing that is donated to secondhand stores ends up in landfills every year. Just nine percent of plastic that ends up in the municipal waste stream gets recycled, according to the EPA, and only 15 percent of textiles get recycled. It can be difficult to take apart clothes and re-use the fabrics, Cline said, so lots of clothing in the waste stream gets sent to the developing world, used for rags, or sent to a landfill.

Fifty years ago, the science fiction writer Philip K. Dick coined a phrase for these “useless objects” that accumulate in a house: “kipple.” In Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, which served as the basis for the movie Blade Runner, he theorized that “the entire universe is moving toward a state of total, absolute kippleization.” Kipple reproduced, Dick wrote, when nobody was around. The ubiquity of mobile devices and the ease of online shopping have made Dick’s prediction come true, with one small tweak: Our kipple does not just multiply on its own, every time we turn away. We grow it ourselves, buying more and more of it, because we can.

Many beginning gardeners plan to grow their vegetables in raised beds — and for good reason! Those of us who have been raised bed gardening for years testify to how much we enjoy it! Better harvests, less weeding, sharp aesthetics — what’s not to love?

But as in any venture, there are mistakes to be made. The problem with making mistakes in a raised bed garden is they aren’t easily corrected. I know this first-hand!

From my own experience and from hearing the experiences of others, I’ve compiled these seven mistakes raised bed gardeners commonly make.

If you’re planning a raised bed garden for the first time or adding to your existing beds, this will help you avoid many of the mistakes I and others have made. And if you’re already gardening in raised beds but are seeing lackluster results, you may find some reasons why here.

1. Raised Beds are too wide.

One of the biggest benefits of raised bed gardening is avoiding soil compaction. You want to be able to work in your garden beds without stepping on them. This promotes a better soil structure and ultimately healthier plants.

But if the width of your raised beds prevents you from working all sides within your reach, you will find yourself stepping inside the bed, defeating this major purpose of a raised bed.

For this reason, raised beds should never be more than four feet wide. Most people can comfortably reach into the center of a four-foot-wide raised bed without any problem. But as I’ve experimented with different sizes, I’ve found a three-foot-wide span is even more comfortable for me.

When choosing the width of your raised beds, you also must consider the placement of the bed. If you situate your raised beds next to a fence, I recommend the width not to exceed thirty inches. This way, you can work your bed from one side only with ease.

2. You don’t plan for irrigation.

Unless you want to hand-water your raised beds with a watering can (and that will get old quick), you need to plan ahead of time how you will irrigate the beds.

First, I recommend placing raised beds near a water source. Whether you plant to hand-water your beds or use a more efficient system of soaker hoses or drip lines, having water easily accessible will save you much time and headache.

In my early years of gardening, I placed a lawn sprinkler near my raised beds to overhead water my garden. But this proved entirely inefficient. Not only did overhead watering waste water, but it also exacerbated many of the fungal diseases common in my area like early blight and powdery mildew.

Now I recommend soaker hoses or drip irrigation for raised beds. For just a few raised beds, soaker hoses will perform just fine.

But if you have more than a few raised beds, or if you garden with a combination of raised beds and ground beds like I do, setting up a drip irrigation system works great and costs less.

Here is an inexpensive soaker hose as well as a drip irrigation starter kit similar to what I use in my garden.

3. Material Used is Unsafe.

Though you will find a myriad of speculation about the safety of certain pressure-treated wood for use in raised beds, most experts agree on this: do not use pressure-treated wood manufactured prior to 2003. 

Pressure-treated wood manufactured prior to 2003 contains chromated copper arsenate, and you don’t want that near your food garden. Modern methods of pressure-treated wood use safer practices, and whether you choose to use it is a personal decision.

I have used pressure-treated pine wood in all of my raised beds, but this is a personal decision each gardener has to make.

Many people choose to use rot-resistant and chemical-free woods such as cedar or redwood, but prepare to pay more if you go that route.

If you’re looking for cheap raised garden beds, you might want to repurpose wood that was used in a different capacity. Perhaps you have an old fence you are taking down, for example. To be safe, just make sure it wasn’t manufactured prior to 2003.

My brother-in-law called me when he took down his old fence and asked me if I wanted the wood. Before I took it, I confirmed the fence was only 10 years old. Then, I repurposed that old fence into three new raised beds. You can see my process of building these raised beds from that old garden fence here.

What other materials can you use for raised beds? Many people are starting to build beds out of steel panels like Jill Winger’s raised beds here.

With any new idea for raised bed materials, do your research first. Avoid old railway ties (which contain harmful creosote), for example, and do your research before you use old tires.

4. Raised Bed Garden Soil Lacks Nutrients

Many soil combinations will work well with raised beds, but some do not. Potting soil, for example, drains too quickly. Unless your raised bed sits on concrete or rocks (and thus acts more like a container), skip the potting soil. You need more substance than what potting soil can provide.

Another mistake well-intentioned gardeners make is using soil with too much nitrogen content, like a bed full of composted manure or a bag of soil filled with chemical fertilizers. Your plants will grow great but fruit-producing plants like tomatoes produce little fruit.

Another caution: I have found that plants grown in a raised bed filled only with bagged soil grew much slower than those beds with some amount of organic material mixed in.

I top-dress my raised beds with homemade compost, which adds organic matter into the soil.

Personally, I’ve found the best success in my raised beds by using a combination of native soil (or garden soil) and organic material like compost, but depending on what you have available and your budget, you have many options to choose from.

5. Raised Beds are placed too close together.

Working in raised beds can be the joy of any gardener. That’s why you want to create the most comfortable working area as possible.

To do this, you want enough room to be able to work between the beds comfortably — two to three feet at least. I made this mistake by only allowing about a foot between my raised beds, and it’s always a challenge weeding, planting, and harvesting from those edges.

When you place your raised beds, ensure you can get your garden cart or wheelbarrow in between them. When you have enough space to do that, you can sit a stool beside the beds for a comfortable working area.

6. Pathways grow up with weeds and grass.

There are few things more frustrating than going out to my garden, planning to enjoy some time working in my raised beds, and discovering the grass has grown up beside them.

I have to be alert to snakes, and the overgrown grass causes my legs to itch. My husband and I both try to keep the area trimmed with a weed eater, but with 3 acres to maintain, sometimes we can’t always keep it tidy.

If you don’t want to keep mowing or weed eating the grass and weeds around your raised beds, place a barrier down before the weeds and grass emerge for the season.

Broken down cardboard boxes with a light layer of mulch on top works great! But an even easier method I’ve begun to use is rolling brown kraft paper between beside my beds and covering with mulch.

I do recommend organic mulches. Skip the landscape fabric because weeds will eventually get through anyway. Pine needles are my favorite for pathways because they break down more slowly than other materials.

7. Neglecting to Mulch Raised Beds

Mulching your raised beds is just an important as mulching in a ground garden bed, and perhaps even more so.

Though weed pressure is usually less in raised beds, it isn’t non-existent. Weed seeds from native soil find light and sprout. Seeds floating in the wind and deposited from birds love the rich soil of raised beds. For these reasons, mulch will dramatically reduce your weeding time.

But more importantly, mulch regulates the soil temperature and retains moisture — both critical needs of raised beds in the hot summer.

One huge advantage of raised beds is how the soil heats up quicker in the spring, allowing for faster planting. But it also heats up as the season goes on. Mulch helps regulate that temperature more than bare soil would.

Mulch also regulates moisture. In wet seasons, it acts like a sponge, absorbing excess rainfall. In dry times, it keeps moisture from evaporating in the heat of the summer. You will find your mulched raised beds much healthier than those without it.

Jack knows what it’s like to have a crush on someone. When he was human, he had that typical quickening heartbeat when he saw the group of pretty girls in school or at the market. He knows what it’s like when your cheeks flush at the closeness of the object of your affections. He knows the lingering feeling after kissing someone you’ve liked for a long time.

With Y/N, he feels all that and more. He feels warmth, not just from her, but also in his stomach when he sees her. When he holds her close, he feels tugs his his chest, as if his inactive heart was starting to beat again. He feels the habitual yet nonessential breaths he takes catch in his lungs when he hears her laugh. He’s always so eager to have her near him, to smell her shampoo when she cuddles into him at night and stroke her cheek when she groans in frustration at not understanding her homework.

With Jack, Y/N’s long nights get shorter. He’s always there in her dorm when he has nights off at the bar. When the bar is empty, he calls her to let her know and she does her homework at the counter. He walks her back and stays with her, his cool chest serving as a pillow when she sleeps. His voice had become a lullaby of sorts, him telling her stories of his experiences in the past hundred or so years.

“I want to go to your house,” Y/N states one day while she and Jack are sitting in her dorm. She’s done with classes for the day, having only one in the afternoon. “S’not much, love,” Jack replies, smoothing out the sheets from where he sits on her bed. There’s a solitary window in her room, and the only spot that doesn’t get sunlight is where the bed is. “But I wanna meet Socks!” she says, turning to fully face him. “It’s been a month since we’ve started dating, I think it’s time I meet him!”

When he sees her face, he can’t say no. He sighs, letting his head fall back against the wall. He feels the mattress dip at her weight being put on it and recognizes the feeling of her lips against his cheek as she settles into his lap. “Pleaseeeeeeee,” she says against his cheek before pressing a series of kisses onto it. He chuckles, wrapping his arms around her and leaning down to bury his face in her neck. “We’ll leave once the sun goes down.”

Y/N and Jack leave Y/N’s dorm with her backpack filled with her school materials and a weekend bag packed with overnight clothes and toiletries.

Jack leads the way, one hand holding her weekend bag and the other holding Y/N’s. He points out different buildings and tells her what they used to be and who used to own them. “You didn’t grow up here, did you?” “No, no. I grew up in Oxton in the Scottish Borders.” “So what were you doing here when you and your friend got in that fight?” “His dad was expanding the company. He was creating a sort of, London headquarters so we were staying with him to check out the city, maybe meet some girls. Took a turn when that fight happened.” “Where’s the company now?” “It closed during World War II. The London headquarters was destroyed in the Blitz and they lost so much that it would’ve cost more to manufacture new merchandise than it was to just find what survived and make the most of that. My friend and I decided to find some old belongings of ours and sell them to collectors and the museums to make some money. That’s where most of my money comes from, and then the job at the pub.” “That’s…really smart,” she laughs in disbelief, “I’m never donating my old clothes ever again.” Jack bellows a laugh at that, bringing her hand to his lips to press a kiss to the back of it.

Halfway through the walk, Y/N’s feet began dragging. “Jack you live too farrrrrrr,” she complained. “C’mon then lass,” he said, a smile spreading on his face as he put the longer strap of her weekend bag over his shoulder and squat down. She giggled as she hopped onto his back, arms around his neck and his hands holding her thighs around his waist.

He walked with her on his back the rest of the way, the both of them ignoring the curious stares they got as they passed by. “They’re just jealous they don’t have a vampire that can carry them around when they get tired,” Y/N teased. “S’that all I am to you? Just some pack mule?” “No, of course not!” she says, “You’re also really good for cuddles.” She yelps as he pinches her thigh, “Cheeky minx.”

Jack’s house is a pale tan color on a street lined with trees. He lets her down from his back as he unlocks the door and gestures for her to go in first.

He wasn’t lying when he said there wasn’t much. It’s really dark and it’s silent, except for the sound of a small set of feet padding across the floor and a meow. Jack turns the lights on and Y/N sees she’s standing in a small foyer. There’s stairs to her left and a living room straight ahead, which would’ve been perfect for two people living in the house. In the living room, a large couch sits flush against the wall across from a TV mounted onto the opposite wall. A coffee table stands between the two, and Y/N sees Socks, a black fluffy cat with bright green eyes, looking curiously at her.

“Hey, mate,” Jack greets the feline, holding his fist out and waiting for Socks to bump it with his head. “C’mon,” Jack says to Y/N, “he won’t bite.”

Y/N hesitantly holds her hand out. She watches as Socks sniffs her hand and feels his tongue run across the tips of her fingers for a second before he nudges her palm. Socks stands at the attention he’s getting from her, purring loudly as she scratches behind his ears. She sets her backpack down and kneels next to the coffee table, smiling as Socks continues purring happily. She looks around, finding a large cat tower next to the couch.

“You’re a spoiled kitty, aren’t you?” she asks, laughing as the cat seems to meow in response. “Yeah. Bought him all these toys and a cat tower and he’d rather steal my socks,” Jack grumbles.

Y/N stations herself at the dining table made for four and peeks into the door way that leads into the kitchen. The appliances are really old, looking like they were made in the 80s. The cabinets and tile look a little outdated as well, but she can tell Jack doesn’t use them much with how new they still look. She turns her attention back to the schoolwork she had set on the table and begins working as Jack sneaks upstairs.

The bedroom is an absolute mess. He hasn’t had guests over in so long and wasn’t planning for Y/N to visit. He begins tackling the pile of dirty laundry, throwing them all in a hamper until it’s overflowing. His shoes are scattered throughout the room, he moves quickly to pair them up and line them on the floor of the closet. He opens all the drawers that have clothes falling out and folds the shirts and pairs of pants neatly so that the drawers can shut properly.

Once all the clothes have been sorted and put in the washing machine, he looks to his bed.

The sheets are a mess and he’s sure he hasn’t changed them in a few months. He doesn’t sleep often, but there is the need for an occasional nap to just recharge. He normally sleeps on the couch and only sleeps on the bed when he remembers he has one. He quickly pulls the sheets off, leaving the mattress bare. He stashes the dirty sheets into the laundry room to wash when his clothes are done. He goes into one of his storage closets to find another set of bedsheets and settles on a navy colored one. When he’s done making the bed, he turns and almost jumps at the sight of Y/N in the doorway.

“Damn, I wish I could make my bed that fast,” she laughs. He laughs with her, nervously scratching the back of his head.

Their laughter dies and they’re left in an awkward silence. “Did you need something, lass?” “Oh, yes. I, um, I’m hungry.”

Shit. Jack facepalms. How could he forget food for his human girlfriend? “Uh, right lass. M’sorry, all I’ve got is a couple tins of cat food.”

She laughs and if Jack was human, he’s sure he’d be scarlet red. He feels a pout spread on his face. “Stop, laughin’ at me,” he says grumpily, crossing his arms. “Aww,” he hears her say. He refuses to look at her, knowing she’s got a cheeky smile on her face, “It’s okay, I shouldn’t have expected you to have food here.”

He feels his shoulders rise and fall as he sighs.

“Jack,” she laughs, “stop, it’s not a big deal, I saw a supermarket on the way here.”

Jack insists they drive to the supermarket even though it’s only a block away from his place. “I’ll only get a few things, I promise,” she says. From how he’s seen her eat in the past few weeks, he knows that’s most likely to not be true.

When they get to the supermarket, the parking lot is empty except for a handful of cars. It’s 8:30, half and hour before closing. She instructs Jack to push the cart as she walks into the store ahead of him. His eyes squint at the fluorescent lights that buzz and flicker all over the store. “You know,” he starts, “I don’t hang around lights that much, but this is the ugliest lighting I’ve ever seen.” “Oh hush,” he hears her say and she goes down the pasta aisle, “and get used to it. You’re gonna have to if you’re gonna date me.”

He rolls his eyes at her as she throws a pack of instant noodles into the cart. She leads him to the dairy aisle to pick up some milk and butter before he follows her as she runs to the cereal aisle. He snorts as he finds her standing in the middle of the aisle, looking extremely thoughtful as she surveys the options of cereal she can choose from.

“Why are you thinking so hard, lass?” he laughs. “Because I’m thinking I should get the coco pops but I might want the Froot Loops tomorrow morning.” “Are humans always this indecisive when they go food shopping?” he says, bringing the cart behind her and holding her waist. “Don’t you get a little indecisive when you’re hunting?” she asks as she feels him pressing prickly kisses against her skin. “Nah, I just sink my teeth into the first thing I find,” he says, playfully biting at her neck and kissing the spot. She giggles as she squirms out of his arms. There’s an exchange of looks between them as they smile at each other. He hears her heartbeat pick up when he runs his tongue over his lips. The moment’s gone when she suddenly turns her attention back to the cereal, settling on the Froot Loops. “I want these,” she says quietly.

He lets out a chuckle and kisses her forehead before they stop to get paper plates and bowls and plastic utensils.

Once they finished paying, Jack drove them back to the house. Y/N skipped out of the car and grabbed the grocery bag. She ran to the kitchen and began putting the groceries away, finding a shelf of Jack’s fridge filled with cat food for Socks. She laughed at the sight as she put the milk and butter on one of the shelves attached to the door. She put the cereal in the empty pantry and began preparing her noodles. Once her noodles were done, she brought the bowl to the dining room.

Jack sits with her as she eats, scolding Socks every so often when he insisted sitting on the table while she ate, staring intently at the noodles.

“Oi, that’s not yours, you’ve got your food down there!” Jack chastises, pointing at the food bowl on the floor.

Jack laughs quietly to himself as he watches Y/N eat her noodles. She’s not trying to be neat about it, rather she hooks the noodles onto the plastic fork and shovels them into her mouth. He likes how comfortable she feels around him, enough to eat messily in front of him with soup dribbling down her chin as she slurps up the long noodles dangling from her mouth. There’s something satisfying about her showing this side to him and it just makes him want to let her into his world even more.

Jack waits as Y/N gets ready for bed in his bathroom. He hears her brushing her teeth and he sheds the Henley he had worn for the day. He’s about to toss it aside to be washed when he hears her come out of the bathroom. He’s met with wide eyes on his torso when he turns to face her. She silently walks over to him and he’s suddenly conscious of the markings that scatter his body. “What are these?” she asks, tracing the circular scars. “Scars, from the wars.” “What?” “I was a foot solider in World War I. They usually sent us out in the middle of the night to try and advance. We got shot at a lot. Didn’t do much in terms of killing.” “Do they hurt?” “No, they’re just there.”

He feels her hand travel down to his side, where a man had slashed through the skin with a knife. “What happened here?” “Got involved in hand to hand combat.” “You would’ve died if…” “Yeah,” he breathes, “Guess it’s a good thing I didn’t,” he says, reaching up to cup her cheek. She looks up to meet his eyes and smiles. He bends down to press a kiss to her lips. She pulls away and begins kissing the marked skin. “They don’t hurt,” he reminds her. “I know,” she says, “just wanna love on you.” She nuzzles her head into his neck and he smiles. She reaches down and grips the shirt he held in his hands, “And I wanna wear this to bed.” “You sure, love?” “Mm,” she hums, taking the shirt and going back into the bathroom.

Jack lays on the bed and settles under the covers. Y/N comes out and crawls to him, resting her head on his bare chest. “If you were a foot solider in World War I, what were you in World War II?” she asks as he reaches over to turn off the lamp. “I was a pilot in the RAF.” “Hmm. Did you fight in the Battle of Britain?” He nods, knowing she can feel the up and down movement of his head. She settles further into his chest, her arms wrapping around his waist as the sleeves of his Henley extended past her finger tips. He sighed contentedly as she felt her grow heavy in his arms and heard her breathing even out.

Jack knows what it’s like to have a crush on someone. But he knows this isn’t just a crush. He cares so deeply for Y/N, and adores every bit of who she is. He feels the hurt feelings he had harbored for so many years begin to float away as his arms hold her closer.

7 Common Mistakes in Raised Bed Gardening – The Beginner’s Garden

Many beginning gardeners plan to grow their vegetables in raised beds — and for good reason! Those of us who have been raised bed gardening for years testify to how much we enjoy it! Better harvests, less weeding, sharp aesthetics — what’s not to love?

But as in any venture, there are mistakes to be made. The problem with making mistakes in a raised bed garden is they aren’t easily corrected. I know this first-hand!

From my own experience and from hearing the experiences of others, I’ve compiled these seven mistakes raised bed gardeners commonly make.

If you’re planning a raised bed garden for the first time or adding to your existing beds, this will help you avoid many of the mistakes I and others have made. And if you’re already gardening in raised beds but are seeing lackluster results, you may find some reasons why here.

1. Raised Beds are too wide.

One of the biggest benefits of raised bed gardening is avoiding soil compaction. You want to be able to work in your garden beds without stepping on them. This promotes a better soil structure and ultimately healthier plants.

But if the width of your raised beds prevents you from working all sides within your reach, you will find yourself stepping inside the bed, defeating this major purpose of a raised bed.

For this reason, raised beds should never be more than four feet wide. Most people can comfortably reach into the center of a four-foot-wide raised bed without any problem. But as I’ve experimented with different sizes, I’ve found a three-foot-wide span is even more comfortable for me.

When choosing the width of your raised beds, you also must consider the placement of the bed. If you situate your raised beds next to a fence, I recommend the width not to exceed thirty inches. This way, you can work your bed from one side only with ease.

2. You don’t plan for irrigation.

Unless you want to hand-water your raised beds with a watering can (and that will get old quick), you need to plan ahead of time how you will irrigate the beds.

First, I recommend placing raised beds near a water source. Whether you plant to hand-water your beds or use a more efficient system of soaker hoses or drip lines, having water easily accessible will save you much time and headache.

In my early years of gardening, I placed a lawn sprinkler near my raised beds to overhead water my garden. But this proved entirely inefficient. Not only did overhead watering waste water, but it also exacerbated many of the fungal diseases common in my area like early blight and powdery mildew.

Now I recommend soaker hoses or drip irrigation for raised beds. For just a few raised beds, soaker hoses will perform just fine.

But if you have more than a few raised beds, or if you garden with a combination of raised beds and ground beds like I do, setting up a drip irrigation system works great and costs less.

Here is an inexpensive soaker hose as well as a drip irrigation starter kit similar to what I use in my garden.

3. Material Used is Unsafe.

Though you will find a myriad of speculation about the safety of certain pressure-treated wood for use in raised beds, most experts agree on this: do not use pressure-treated wood manufactured prior to 2003. 

Pressure-treated wood manufactured prior to 2003 contains chromated copper arsenate, and you don’t want that near your food garden. Modern methods of pressure-treated wood use safer practices, and whether you choose to use it is a personal decision.

I have used pressure-treated pine wood in all of my raised beds, but this is a personal decision each gardener has to make.

Many people choose to use rot-resistant and chemical-free woods such as cedar or redwood, but prepare to pay more if you go that route.

If you’re looking for cheap raised garden beds, you might want to repurpose wood that was used in a different capacity. Perhaps you have an old fence you are taking down, for example. To be safe, just make sure it wasn’t manufactured prior to 2003.

My brother-in-law called me when he took down his old fence and asked me if I wanted the wood. Before I took it, I confirmed the fence was only 10 years old. Then, I repurposed that old fence into three new raised beds. You can see my process of building these raised beds from that old garden fence here.

What other materials can you use for raised beds? Many people are starting to build beds out of steel panels like Jill Winger’s raised beds here.

With any new idea for raised bed materials, do your research first. Avoid old railway ties (which contain harmful creosote), for example, and do your research before you use old tires.

4. Raised Bed Garden Soil Lacks Nutrients

Many soil combinations will work well with raised beds, but some do not. Potting soil, for example, drains too quickly. Unless your raised bed sits on concrete or rocks (and thus acts more like a container), skip the potting soil. You need more substance than what potting soil can provide.

Another mistake well-intentioned gardeners make is using soil with too much nitrogen content, like a bed full of composted manure or a bag of soil filled with chemical fertilizers. Your plants will grow great but fruit-producing plants like tomatoes produce little fruit.

Another caution: I have found that plants grown in a raised bed filled only with bagged soil grew much slower than those beds with some amount of organic material mixed in.

I top-dress my raised beds with homemade compost, which adds organic matter into the soil.

Personally, I’ve found the best success in my raised beds by using a combination of native soil (or garden soil) and organic material like compost, but depending on what you have available and your budget, you have many options to choose from.

5. Raised Beds are placed too close together.

Working in raised beds can be the joy of any gardener. That’s why you want to create the most comfortable working area as possible.

To do this, you want enough room to be able to work between the beds comfortably — two to three feet at least. I made this mistake by only allowing about a foot between my raised beds, and it’s always a challenge weeding, planting, and harvesting from those edges.

When you place your raised beds, ensure you can get your garden cart or wheelbarrow in between them. When you have enough space to do that, you can sit a stool beside the beds for a comfortable working area.

6. Pathways grow up with weeds and grass.

There are few things more frustrating than going out to my garden, planning to enjoy some time working in my raised beds, and discovering the grass has grown up beside them.

I have to be alert to snakes, and the overgrown grass causes my legs to itch. My husband and I both try to keep the area trimmed with a weed eater, but with 3 acres to maintain, sometimes we can’t always keep it tidy.

If you don’t want to keep mowing or weed eating the grass and weeds around your raised beds, place a barrier down before the weeds and grass emerge for the season.

Broken down cardboard boxes with a light layer of mulch on top works great! But an even easier method I’ve begun to use is rolling brown kraft paper between beside my beds and covering with mulch.

I do recommend organic mulches. Skip the landscape fabric because weeds will eventually get through anyway. Pine needles are my favorite for pathways because they break down more slowly than other materials.

7. Neglecting to Mulch Raised Beds

Mulching your raised beds is just an important as mulching in a ground garden bed, and perhaps even more so.

Though weed pressure is usually less in raised beds, it isn’t non-existent. Weed seeds from native soil find light and sprout. Seeds floating in the wind and deposited from birds love the rich soil of raised beds. For these reasons, mulch will dramatically reduce your weeding time.

But more importantly, mulch regulates the soil temperature and retains moisture — both critical needs of raised beds in the hot summer.

One huge advantage of raised beds is how the soil heats up quicker in the spring, allowing for faster planting. But it also heats up as the season goes on. Mulch helps regulate that temperature more than bare soil would.

Mulch also regulates moisture. In wet seasons, it acts like a sponge, absorbing excess rainfall. In dry times, it keeps moisture from evaporating in the heat of the summer. You will find your mulched raised beds much healthier than those without it.
