Look, this man have done terrible things, but yeah. He tweeted about it.
Wanna know a little, tiny bit of what happened yesterday?

"Is this the Peace of Nicolas Maduro? Chavista Collectives shot against electives in the Votation Center "CNF Simoncito Moscú, Rómulo Betancourt sector, Maturín, Monagas. An elderly woman was injured. They don't let opposition witnesses inside. 10:00@? #Democracy2024"

"UNES" Catia.
Is tendency because students of said university report that they pretend to force them to vote for Nicolas Maduro.
"The director took our IDs and marks the screen for us".
The students have refused and started confrontations.
Knowing that, and the fact that so much else happened... You believe this HUGE, DESCARADA SINVERGÜENZA MENTIRA?? THIS IS LIES!!

Just look at this!!!

You know how we feel? Well...

"They took my friends away from me, they took a normal university life away from me, they took family away from me, they took aspirations away from me.
I don't want them to take away my life anymore".
WE ARE SO DONE.
This is just the tip of the iceberg, today there are so, so, so much protests.
THERE'S PEOPLE DYING.

Y’all I genuinely urge you to stay up to date with world politics.
In my country, Venezuela, elections have just been held and the blatant disrespect that the so called government have for their people is astonishing.
How can they claim that Nicolas Maduro, one of the most hated dictators of our time, won 51%/5+ million votes?
How is it possible that he won when the voting panels have been updating every hour how Edmundo Gonzalez (the opposing candidate) has been winning by TRIPLE the vote?
How is it possible that most of the 7.3 million Venezuelan immigrants can’t vote and have no say in what goes on the country that gave them life?
How is it possible that Venezuelans have to fear for their life in voting stations because the military are set there to prevent them from voting?
How is it possible that the pig that’s called president is currently celebrating his “well-earned” victory?
Countries like Chile and Peru are already making statements that they will not recognize the results given by the CNE (the Venezuelan electoral system)
FREAKING ELON MUSK IS MAKING TWEETS REGARDING THE SITUATION
I think it’s sickening how all people can do is talk about it and not do a single thing about it, especially because as a society we try to condemn any harm to human rights just like how we did Russia, who by the way, is one of the dictatorships biggest supporters.
VENEZUELA HAS BEEN FACING AN HUMANITARIAN CRISIS!!!!
People have been facing literal hell since the late 90s and people in power DO. NOT. CARE.
Educate yourself, educate others, and most importantly TALK ABOUT IT, because I’m certain we’re not the first or the last country to go through this.
This is as much as I’ll say.
I hope they all rot in hell.

How to Understand Brazil’s Stance on Venezuela’s Election
Lula’s policy is an attempt to exert influence over Brazil’s neighbor, but the recent past suggests this may have limited effect.

In the aftermath of what looks to have been a blatantly fraudulent election in Venezuela on July 28, the administration of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has decided to join Mexico and Colombia to help facilitate a dialogue between the Maduro administration and the opposition.
This has reignited familiar discussions about Brazil’s foreign policy strategy. Similarly to its response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Brazil has sought to craft a “neutral strategy,” predictably enraging those who say the facts are too clear to justify fence-sitting. Thirty former Latin American presidents recently exhorted Lula to take a tougher stance to defend democracy in Venezuela. Be it growing tensions between the West and China, the war between Russia and Ukraine, or Venezuela’s descent into full-blown dictatorship, Brazil—just like other large powers in the Global South, such as India or Indonesia—often opts for an ambiguous stance to keep all doors open. This is often described as “pragmatism” by its supporters and decried as hypocritical or morally questionable by critics.
Those opposed to Lula’s strategy of seeking to persuade Venezuelan electoral authorities to release the vote tally sheets before deciding whether to accept Maduro’s claim of victory see it as playing into the hands of Venezuela’s president. After all, calling for an “impartial verification of the results” in a country without properly functioning checks and balances or an independent electoral justice system implicitly ends up lending an autocratic government a veneer of legitimacy, as if an impartial verification were possible. Lula has a history of making similar remarks about Russia, such as calling for an independent investigation into the death, earlier this year, of Putin opponent Alexei Navalny, who endured conditions in prison that have been described as amounting to torture.
In addition, the initiative by Brazil, Colombia and Mexico certainly helps Maduro buy time as he hopes the international community will move on once the next crisis emerges someplace else, repeating a strategy he has successfully pursued for years. Lula’s off-the-cuff description of the Venezuelan elections as a “standard and orderly” process and the enthusiastic support of much of the Workers Party for Venezuela’s dictator substantiated Lula’s critics’ position. For them, Brazil was unwilling to condemn Maduro’s transition to “Ortega-style” rule, inadvertently helping Maduro avoid broader diplomatic isolation in the West and ultimately being Maduro’s “useful idiot.” Lula’s diplomatic advisor Celso Amorim’s comment that he had “no confidence” in the vote tallies provided by the opposition is likely to deepen this type of criticism further.
Those who defend Lula’s strategy, on the other hand, question the rush to denounce Maduro and say Brazil’s president is just being prudent. The Brazilian government’s argument is that cutting all diplomatic ties with Caracas would simply deepen Venezuela’s isolation, pushing it even closer to the likes of Russia, Iran and China. It’s an argument that deserves attention. Brazilian diplomats rightly point out that the strategy by Western and Latin American countries of recognizing former opposition leader Juan Guiadó a few years ago failed spectacularly and forced governments into awkwardly reestablishing ties to the Venezuelan regime as Maduro’s hold on power proved more resilient than anticipated. Finally, with both the United States and European governments facing other geopolitical challenges higher up on the list of priorities, having Brazil take the lead on the thankless task of dealing with the crisis in Venezuela has been welcomed by several Western nations.

This climate catastrophe took place as Niger was already suffering under the harsh sanctions imposed by the regional bloc Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), egged on by France, following the ouster of the regime of Mohamed Bazoum, perceived domestically as a puppet of France.
Mass protests against the military deployment and economic domination of the country by its former colonizer culminated in a coup led by the head of his presidential guard, General Abdourahamane Tchiani, removing Bazoum on July 26, 2023. A military government called the National Council for the Safeguard of the Homeland (CNSP) was formed.
...
Be it “Cuba, Russia, DPR Korea, Iraq, Iran, Venezuela, Libya, Mali, Burkina Faso and now Niger”, sanctions have always been imposed to make the people suffer “to turn them against their governments.” However, like in all these countries, it has “had the opposite effect,” maintains Alassane.
In the immediate aftermath of the coup removing Bazoum, Niger was divided between those who supported the coup and those who opposed it, he explained. It was amid this confrontation tearing Niger’s political fabric two ways, that the ECOWAS imposed sanctions and threatened war with the backing of France.
“We had never given anyone the mandate to kill us because a president was deposed by a coup,” Alassane protested. He described what followed as a “patriotic surge” that united the country behind the CNSP, which consolidated its popular support by ordering the French troops out of the country and demonstrating its commitment to implement the popular will.

Believe me I understand you, not only because the US is one of the most influential powers in the world and Trump winning it's not something we need right now, but we are also living a complicated political situation in my country too, all because our president coff coff coff dictator coff coff coff Maduro and his pals decided that they really like their seats and simply proclaimed themselves winners of the elections even though he did not show the acts and 80% of the country hates him. For now we are all waiting for January to see if at least something happens or if we will have to endure for another 6 years or maybe more.
Oof. I'm not super knowledgeable about South American politics, but I know the situation in Venezuela is...not good.
That's the thing, y'all have your own problems and shouldn't have to follow American politics, but on the other hand everyone else really does because America makes itself everyone else's problem. Either through directly fucking with and sabotaging other nations for its (or its lobbyists') own interests, or just bringing them down with us because so much is tied up in the US. Also, like, if the US goes to war with China or whoever-that's fucking it man, everyone's dead. We're 90 seconds to midnight on the doomsday clock and that's everyone's problem.
And I know the shit going on in Venezuela has been going on longer than Trump has been a figure in American politics, but there's a lot of authoritarianism and wannabe-fascist movements popping up all over the world and I honestly do think that they are at least partially emboldened by the batshit right-wing nonsense going on here. (I know Maduro is left-wing but I believe in horseshoe theory, they're all power-grubbers and scam artists and just use different words and methods to achieve that) And that shit is backed by Russia. I mean, the good news is that Putin doesn't have a clear successor, and he has to die at some point. So if we can hold out long enough then we might have an easier time putting out these fires, but in the meantime people are dying.
Oh yeah, Trump is going to declare himself the winner no matter what the outcome of the election is. And he's put actors in place who he thinks will act as faithless electors in the event he loses a state and award those votes to him anyway. So even if more people vote for Harris. Even if she wins in the right places to counteract the fact that rural, conservative votes are counted sometimes four times as much as a California vote. It might just not fucking matter.
For fuck's sake, they were talking about 'slaughtering' Democrats tonight. And apparently Trump insinuated that he might reinstitute slavery? They've talked about repealing the laws that protect interracial marriage, like. There is only one country on the godforsaken planet that has miscegenation laws, and it's North Korea. And you bring this up and his supporters are like "oh, he wasn't serious! He just called Mexicans subhuman animals who are poisoning the blood of our country and said we needed to clean them out as a joke!"
I'd say it's 'last one in the oven' syndrome, but that's really not a thing. The Jewish Nazis who stayed with the party because they thought Hitler 'wasn't serious' and was just using antisemitism to 'rile people up' were the first ones deported to the death camps.
#ah this is all over the fucking place#i really need booze but i'm also filling out online surveys for rent money so

U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day, 2025
Issued March 9, 2025.
On this U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day, we send our love, prayers, and support to every American being held in captivity — and I vow to you, your families, and your loved ones that we will never forget you, we will never abandon you, and we commit to returning you safely home and bringing your captors to justice.
As President, I have no higher obligation than to keep American citizens free, safe, and secure. My Administration is proudly taking decisive action to bring Americans back home where they belong. Since taking office, I have secured the release of 13 Americans held captive. Six of those Americans imprisoned in Venezuela are now safely home with their families and we had them released in less than 24 hours. Two Americans detained in Afghanistan have been liberated. Two Americans detained in Belarus have been returned safely back home. A Pennsylvania teacher, unjustly held in Russia, is back on American soil, fulfilling a promise I made to his 95-year-old mother moments before taking the stage that fateful day in Butler, Pennsylvania. Additionally, two American-Israeli citizens who endured months in Hamas captivity have been reunited with their loved ones.
However, there are still Americans who need to come home. Every American held unjustly abroad must be released and returned home. The United States will not tolerate the unlawful detention of our citizens. I will continue to bring more Americans back to their loved ones, and I will not back down until they are home.
Today, we solemnly stand with every American being held hostage or wrongfully detained and their families who are enduring bitter uncertainty. We commit to forging a future rooted in the commonsense principle of peace through strength. Above all, we ask Almighty God to keep our hostages and wrongful detainees safe; to reunite them with their families; and to make America stronger, safer, more secure, and more prosperous than ever before.
The Congress, by Public Law 118-31 approved December 22, 2023, has designated March 9 of each year as “U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim March 9, 2025, as U.S. Hostage and Wrongful Detainee Day. On this day, as we fly the Hostage and Wrongful Detainee flag at the White House, I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with relevant programs, ceremonies, and activities.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this ninth day of March, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty-five, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-ninth.

Jumping Puddles: A Reflection on Life and Dreams
Tonight, as I showered, I reflected on the day's activities: I closed all my cases at work today, aware that next week I'll be moving on to new challenges. I participated in a couple of meetings, reviewed the planning for an event scheduled for the end of the month, and completed some training sessions. In summary, it was a productive day. However, as it often happens, there's always a void, an unfinished task, an unresolved matter. And today, my reflection centered on a childhood memory: the act of jumping puddles.
It might sound strange, but let me explain. When I was a child, my family lived in a modest area of San Félix-Venezuela, where my parents built our first home. While it wasn't exactly luxurious, we had a beautiful home, and it was there that I began to learn independence and friendships that endure to this day, more than 30 years later. During that time, I learned to take the bus home from school since my mother worked and couldn't pick me up.
My school was in a more privileged part of the city, and the two-hour bus ride allowed me time to observe the world from the window, deal with some annoying people, and learn independence at a young age. When getting off the bus, I had to be careful with the puddles that always formed on the streets, but I learned to jump over them to keep my shoes clean.
As I walked down the yellow dirt road, I used to think, "My life will never be what I imagine. I'll never do anything important. Have you ever seen successful people jumping puddles?" That was my mindset at 12 years old. However, once I was home, I would forget those worries. But the same story repeated every time I faced that scene. I always wondered when my life would change and how many more puddles I'd have to jump.
I don't want to give the impression that my life was unhappy; my parents worked hard to provide us with education and care, they loved us deeply, and I had a happy childhood. But my surroundings didn't always enthuse me; I've always been very visual.
That's how I grew up, we eventually moved, and the streets were no longer dirt, then I had to deal with other environmental challenges (like the unpleasant odors of downtown Caracas), but I'll save those for another occasion. Nowadays, my life is very different. I no longer have to jump puddles or tolerate bad smells. However, occasionally, I feel the same anxiety I experienced in those days; the fear of failure never truly goes away.
I share this story for those who are "jumping puddles" right now and believe that their lives won't change or that their dreams will never come true. I tell you to look in this mirror, your background won't determine your destiny, only your character will.
What's important is to learn from the challenges and never stop dreaming big, even when hopelessness overwhelms us.
Don't give up. Because the best is yet to come.

I just saw the show "Love is blind"
It is a program that bothers me but is addictive because of how bizarre it is. Fall in love with a person you met in a week and marry her/him in less than a month it's an intense madness. But if you enter this show you have to be willing to try to fall in love, like when you sign up for a show like that, you must be mentally and emotionally prepared to be honest and open yourself to have a connection, otherwise it would not make sense for you to sign up for an experiment like that.

Of the 30 people who participated in this experiment, only 10 became a couple not counting the couple that broke the second day

I think Barnett and Amber would work perfectly as a couple if they were in high school (living with their parents, thinking that the only concern is school, not thinking about marriage and just having a good time) because they both get along, have fun, they live in the moment and have a strong sexual chemistry, but their relationship is based only on fun and sex. They are not very mature, don’t compromise and hardly talk about serious/important things or the ways in which they would solve their problems. When difficult situations come I don't think they work, Barnett is very selfish and his decisions are based on his comfort (He chose Amber because she was fun, he is undecided and he was afraid of her, he preferred to break LC's heart than to face Amber's fury, instead of being sincere with both of them and telling them that he was not ready to have a real relationship) . She’s also immature and doesn’t have her priorities in order. Who prefers to pay $ 700 in makeup instead to pay that what owe from school knowing that the debt is increasing and thinks is ready to be a mother when are not financially stable, have no home and no job? She thinks a husband is going to solve her problems as if she were a disney princess, but no, what she need is to order her life or get a super rich sugar daddy and not a fuckboy who doesn't know how to deal with problems and looks pretty scared of the debts she has (I thought that Barnett was going to pass out at that moment for his face and because I would do that if she told me her debts and then that she wants to be a housewife and wants me to keep her). Both think and act as teenagers live in the moment without worries, not as adults ready to have a serious relationship and get married.

Jessica and Mark, I don't want them to end up together, she is an abusive manipulator who belittles him because he is not attractive enough by her standards so she's obsessed with a guy(Barnett the fuckboy) who sent her to the friendzone. I am Mexican, I understand that he was raised with my culture, it is normal for men to be taught to be persistent, passionates, affectionate and believe that if they try hard for a woman she will fall madly in love with you, but no, he needs to realize that there are people for whom it is not worth fighting for.

Kenny and Kelly, is one of the healthiest relationships there are, they understand each other, they talk about all things and find ways to solve problems without fighting, they respect each other, they have fun, they are economically stable, They are independent, their families get along good, they are friends and they are on the same page. It is the type of couple that could have a healthy and stable marriage or a mature divorce where children would not be traumatized. The problem is that it is a couple so well balanced and so undramatic that it does not work for a program, without drama people consider the couple boring and do not sell. If social pressure is difficult, it is more if producers, cameras, etc. are on top of you looking to find and exploit something bad in your relationship for the program to sell more. I think maybe they won't get married because they haven't been showy couple in the program for the lack of conflicts and maybe the producers have suggested that since they didn't have sex they should end their relationship to make things more interesting in the end of the show, but why they have that's the kind of relationship that is worthwhile in real life.

Lauren and Cameron, are similar to Kenny and Kelly but with the difference that they had sex and part that generates tension, conflict and drama, and they have to overcome that and not worry about what society will say for being an interracial couple. In a nutshell has a good balance between drama and a functional couple so the people loves them and think they are sexy, cool, romantic and nothing boring as Kenny and Kelly so they generates more attention in the show, so maybe they get married.

Damien and Giannina, they already seem married, but not in the good way, looks of those couples who go to therapy because they do not want to divorce but there is no sincere love in their relationship or if there only one of them feel it. I think they are cool for a romantic comedy where opposites attract, but in real life, fighting with someone all the time is not healthy at all. They are happy and super romantics for 3 seconds and they fight again, his family does not want her and they are different in the things that matter (for example, he and his family are Republicans, she is Venezuelan who is against what the government do, that's why he asked her if she agreed to change any of her ideals such as her political ideals and she almost beats him for suggesting that and she mention what she has to do for her family that lives in Venezuela). She is like the stereotype of crazy Latina Drama queen that has many mood swings and she is also a person with very liberal ideas and he is a very conservative guy who then tends to be half dick with his comments or with the fact that he wants her to change. Even if they got married, they wouldn't last. In less than a month they already fight like this in front of people, they shout, they insult/ignore each other, enduring such fights in a year will end badly
There are couples who baffle me so much that I wonder what they talked about in the capsules?

In case you didn’t know, Columbus’ Day was and is “celebrated” in Latin America, and in most countries it was called “Day of the Race”. This was promoted, as you might’ve guess, by the spanish, who wanted a holiday to celebrate themselves and also pushed the latin american countries to adopt it as a way to “celebrate” the spanish heritage and Columbus.
Of course, not all latin american countries celebrate this day (Cuba and Costa Rica for example), and most of them changed the meaning of the day, so instead of celebrating Columbus and the spanish, it has become a celebration of indigenous and native americans culture, traditions and their resistance to spanish rule. For example, in Argentina is called “Day of Respect of Cultural Diversity”; in Venezuela is the “Day of Indigenous Resistance”; in Ecuador is the “Day of Interculturality and Plurinationality”, just to name a few.
In Chile, while the name and it’s meaning was changed, to the milquetoast “Day of the Meeting between two Worlds”, which was the motto of the “festivities surrounding the 500th anniversary of the spanish arrival.
Either way, all of the above history lesson (mostly directed to the english speaking people in here, since they usually don’t bother with latinx history and with sharing anything that’s not in english), was a foreword to the fact that today, Chile’s official response to this fucking day was made by the government’s Secretary of Culture, who shared the most stupid and tone deaf statement you could possibly make:

Yes, those are native americans receiving Real Madrid and Barcelona shirts from Columbus and his crew, while also asking for autographs and taking pictures with a cellphone. Her tweet reads “Today we celebrate the development of two peoples, the fusion of cultures and the valuable exchange of resources and advancements”.
So yeah, the chilean government thought it was appropiate to celebrate this day by extolling colonialism. I’m so fucking tired of this joke of a government, and to think we still have to endure them for most than a year is tiring.

About the theme
This theme is about the love, connection and my family.
My family is about me, my brother Anthony, my mom, my dad, and of course, my animals: Chispa, Willy and Linda (two dogs and one rabbit). We’ve always together ‘till September 2020.
Maybe the theme “family” is insignificant for most of the people because they only have mild problems, the normal ones you should have with your family, but I know too that exist people with serious issues with their family. My case is not the worst nor the better. Each case is different. I want to let you know better about my case.
Since I was born, the problem was always about my mom and my dad. They don’t love each other. Truly love. And if the problem starts there, then we have already started very badly.
Why build a family if the spouses don’t love each other? And this is the part when I say: I was not planned to be born, yeah. But they still decided to have me but with no love.
The family’s love is the most important in our life and the family’s love consists in the education, for example.
Since I was little my dad was always working and my mom always with me. At the material leveI never lacked anything, it’s true. But there was always a lack of love on their part.
I always thought it was normal / common to feel what I felt. I wanted to feel that there is a bond in my family that no one can break, I wanted to feel my parents' love for me, I wanted to feel the love of a brother better, I wanted to feel the love of family better. They made me grow up without union, without almost any love, they always thought that I was content only with materials, having a roof where I could shelter myself, a plate of food every day and gifts they offered me. No. I have always wanted more than that but it was never enough.
I don't even speak only among the four members of my family, I also speak about my father's family. How can there be such self-serving people? Because the only thing that comes forward is money, it doesn't matter anything or anyone, just money. They don't care who needs family help, they never ask if it's okay, if we need anything. They invite us to baptisms and weddings just to look good in the photograph, but that is useless if there is really no union. For what?
My mother's family is completely different, they are good people, they talk to me, not every day for sure, but they still worry if I'm alive, if I eat, if I lack something and those are the ones I wanted to have around but not I can because they are all in Venezuela. I know that there is a chance to go visit them but it is not the same thing, what I wanted was for them to live on the same island as me, then they would be close by. But even though they are not physically with me, I consider them family and people I can count on.
As I said and I repeat, I know that there are families with worse situations than me, but this is still serious for me, one day I will not even be able to count on anyone. That is why we can call family friends, in my case, it is easier to ask a friend for a favor than a family member. That's why I came to talk about it, that's why I wanted to show you what my family situation is like.We have to learn one thing in this life: don't call a family who shares the same blood as ours, call a family who really likes you at heart and nothing more. There are few, but there is.
In my performance I also show that I have a partner. As I was born without affection and love, I always thought that having a partner would be of no use. In fact, I had a relationship where I was shown to be right until I met a person who made me think differently. That person, currently, is my partner, and I consider the love of my life. He is a person who genuinely cares about me, asks if I'm okay, if I need anything and the like.
After all, it is not bad to have a partner with whom we can share our secrets, our home, in the end our life. Make a life together.I am saddened by the distance we now have to endure, but it is learning to cope, if we love, we do not give up. He made me show that love is beautiful, it exists, it makes us blind, it makes us think of the greatest insanities, but it also makes us have the greatest sorrows.
To have someone to trust 100%, someone to leave us with butterflies in our stomachs, someone to make us smile, someone to help, someone to advise, someone to share with you, someone who likes you as much as you like her.Deep down is your soul mate, your half. You are but masculine. With him I could better understand certain subjects about understanding between two people, I could understand what it is to love in truth, because none of this would be possible if we didn't really like each other.
I am aware that it is very difficult to have this type of connection with someone and I am grateful to have found someone who likes me as I am, and who never asked me to change my personality, or the way I dress, or the way I think, he always accepted me as I am and knew how to deal with everything as I did and always do with him! Basically, the theme is only about family because my partner is from my family.

House Sets Impeachment Vote to Charge Trump With Incitement (NYT) House Democrats introduced an article of impeachment against President Trump on Monday for his role in inflaming a mob that attacked the Capitol, scheduling a Wednesday vote to charge the president with “inciting violence against the government of the United States” if Vice President Mike Pence refused to strip him of power first. As the impeachment drive proceeded, federal law enforcement authorities accelerated efforts to fortify the Capitol ahead of President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s inauguration on Jan. 20. The authorities announced plans to deploy up to 15,000 National Guard troops and set up a multilayered buffer zone with checkpoints around the building by Wednesday, just as lawmakers are to debate and vote on impeaching Mr. Trump. Federal authorities also said they were bracing for a wave of armed protests in all 50 state capitals and Washington in the days leading up to the inauguration.
National Guard inauguration deployment (Military Times) The Defense Department has authorized as many as 15,000 troops to be deployed to Washington, D.C., for the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden. National Guard Bureau chief Gen. Daniel Hokanson said that there will initially be a deployment of 10,000 troops—an increase of about 4,000 from those in D.C. now. That figure is twice the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan and Iraq combined. The general declined to specify whether the guardsmen will be armed, stating that “we will work very closely with the federal agency, the FBI and law enforcement to determine if there is a need for that.” A D.C. National Guard spokesman told Military Times on Sunday that while some troops came to town with their weapons, carrying them on the streets had not yet been authorized.
Companies cutting off Trump and GOP (Yahoo Finance) Marriott and Blue Cross Blue Shield are just a few of the companies that are halting donations to GOP lawmakers who objected to certifying Joe Biden as president, while other businesses move to cut ties with President Trump directly. The actions come on the heels of Friday’s permanent suspension of Donald Trump’s Twitter account and Amazon’s move to cut off social media platform Parler’s servers. (NYT) The backlash is part of a broader shunning of Mr. Trump and his allies unfolding in the wake of the assault on the Capitol. Schools stripped the president of honorary degrees, some prominent Republicans threatened to leave the party and the New York State Bar Association announced it had begun investigating Mr. Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, which could lead to his removal from the group. And the P.G.A. of America announced it would strip Mr. Trump’s New Jersey golf club of a major tournament.
Virus deaths surging in California, now top 30,000 (AP) The coronavirus death toll in California reached 30,000 on Monday, another staggering milestone as the nation’s most populous state endures the worst surge of the nearly yearlong pandemic. Newly confirmed infections are rising at a dizzying rate of more than a quarter-million a week and during the weekend a record 1,163 deaths were reported. Los Angeles County is one of the epicenters and health officials there are telling residents to wear a mask even when at home if they go outside regularly and live with someone elderly or otherwise at high risk. California has deployed 88 refrigerated trailers to use as makeshift morgues mostly in hard-hit Southern California, where traditional storage space is dwindling.
A never-ending scandal (Bloomberg) Lockheed Martin Corp.’s F-35, the fighter jet already being flown by the U.S. and eight allies, remains marred by 871 software and hardware deficiencies that could undercut readiness, missions or maintenance, according to the Pentagon’s testing office. The Defense Department’s costliest weapons system “continues to carry a large number of deficiencies, many of which were identified prior to” the development and demonstration phase, which ended in April 2018 with 941 flaws, Robert Behler, the director of operational testing, said in a new assessment obtained by Bloomberg News in advance of its publication.
Pompeo Returns Cuba to Terrorism Sponsor List (NYT) The State Department designated Cuba a state sponsor of terrorism on Monday in a last-minute foreign policy stroke that will complicate the incoming Biden administration’s plans to restore friendlier relations with Havana. In a statement, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo cited Cuba’s hosting of 10 Colombian rebel leaders, along with a handful of American fugitives wanted for crimes committed in the 1970s, and Cuba’s support for the authoritarian leader of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro. Mr. Pompeo said the action sent the message that “the Castro regime must end its support for international terrorism and subversion of U.S. justice.” The action, announced with just days remaining in the Trump administration, reverses a step taken in 2015 after President Barack Obama restored diplomatic relations with Cuba, calling its decades of political and economic isolation a relic of the Cold War.
Brexit sandwich problems (BBC) A Dutch TV network has filmed border officials confiscating ham sandwiches and other foods from drivers arriving in the Netherlands from the UK, under post-Brexit rules. Under EU rules, travellers from outside the bloc are banned from bringing in meat and dairy products. The rules appeared to bemuse one driver. “Since Brexit, you are no longer allowed to bring certain foods to Europe, like meat, fruit, vegetables, fish, that kind of stuff,” a Dutch border official told the driver in footage broadcast by TV network NPO 1. In one scene, a border official asked the driver whether several of his tin-foil wrapped sandwiches had meat in them. When the driver said they did, the border official said: “Okay, so we take them all.” Surprised, the driver then asked the officials if he could keep the bread, to which one replied: “No, everything will be confiscated—welcome to the Brexit, sir. I’m sorry.”
Merkel sees coronavirus lockdown until early April: Bild (Reuters) Chancellor Angela Merkel has told lawmakers in her conservative party that she expects a lockdown in Germany to curb the spread of the coronavirus to last until the start of April, top-selling Bild daily cited participants as the meeting as saying. “If we don’t manage to stop this British virus, then we will have 10 times the number of cases by Easter. We need eight to 10 more weeks of tough measures,” Bild quoted Merkel as saying.
‘A Stalin with double meat’ (Foreign Policy) A Moscow kebab shop named after Soviet leader Joseph Stalin has closed after just 24 hours of opening after a string of complaints from angry residents. In its brief existence Stalin Doner served items like “Stalin with double meat” and “Beria with tkemali sauce”—a reference to Stalins notorious secret police chief. The shop’s owner, Stanislav Voltman, was interviewed by police for three hours following complaints. “They asked me if my head was screwed on straight,” Voltman told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. “It’s not like I had Hitler as the face of my brand,” Voltman said. Despite public outcry about the kebabs, support for Stalin is on the rise in Russia. A Levada Center poll in 2019 found that 70 percent of Russians think Stalin played a completely or relatively positive role in the life of the country.
In Kashmir, Hopes Wither (NYT) Kashmir, the craggily beautiful region in the shadow of the Himalayas long caught between India and Pakistan, has fallen into a state of suspended animation. Schools are closed. Lockdowns have been imposed, lifted and then reimposed. Once a hub for both Western and Indian tourists, Kashmir has been reeling for more than a year. First, India brought in security forces to clamp down on the region. Then the coronavirus struck. The streets are full of soldiers. Military bunkers, removed years ago, are back, and at many places cleave the road. On highways, soldiers stop passenger vehicles and drag commuters out to check their identity cards. Conflict in Kashmir, India’s only Muslim-majority region, has festered for decades. And an armed uprising has long sought self-rule. Tens of thousands of rebels, civilians and security forces have died since 1990. India and Pakistan have gone to war twice over the territory, which is split between them but claimed by both in its entirety. Now, as India flexes its power over the region, to even call Kashmir a disputed region is a crime—sedition, according to Indian officials. Many say that the political paralysis is the worst it has ever been in Kashmir’s 30 years of conflict, and that people have been choked into submission.
India’s top court suspends implementation of new farm laws (AP) India’s top court on Tuesday temporarily put on hold the implementation of new agricultural laws and ordered the formation of an independent committee of experts to negotiate with farmers who have been protesting against the legislation. The Supreme Court’s ruling came a day after it heard petitions filed by the farmers challenging the controversial legislation. The court said that the laws were passed without enough consultation, and that it was disappointed with the way talks were proceeding between representatives of the government and farmer leaders. Tens of thousands of farmers protesting against the legislation have been blocking half a dozen major highways on the outskirts of New Delhi for more than 45 days. Farmers say they won’t leave until the government repeals the laws. They say the legislation passed by Parliament in September will lead to the cartelization and commercialization of agriculture, make farmers vulnerable to corporate greed and devastate their earnings. The government insists the laws will benefit farmers and says they will enable farmers to market their produce and boost production through private investment.
First came political crimes. Now, a digital crackdown descends on Hong Kong. (Washington Post) HONG KONG—The police officers who came to take away Owen Chow on national security grounds last week left little to chance. Determined to find his phones, they had prepared a list of mobile numbers registered to his name, even one he used exclusively for banking, said the 23-year-old Hong Kong activist. Officers called each number in succession, the vibrations revealing the locations of three iPhones around his apartment. By the end of their operation, police had amassed more than 200 devices from Chow and 52 others held for alleged political crimes that day, according to those arrested, as well as laptops from spouses who are not politically active and were not detained. The digital sweep showed how Hong Kong authorities are wielding new powers under the national security law, introduced last summer, far more widely than the city’s leader promised. Since the Jan. 6 raids, authorities have blocked at least one website, according to the site’s owner and local media reports, raising concerns that Hong Kong is headed for broader digital surveillance and censorship akin to that in mainland China. Hong Kong police have begun sending devices seized from arrested people to mainland China, where authorities have sophisticated data-extraction technology, and are using the information gleaned from those devices to assist in investigations, according to two people familiar with the arrangement who spoke on the condition of anonymity to protect their safety.
26 missing, at least 13 dead in Indonesia landslides (AP) Rescuers are searching for 26 people still missing after two landslides hit a village in Indonesia’s West Java province over the weekend, officials said Tuesday. At least 13 people were killed and 29 others injured in the landslides that were triggered by heavy rain on Sunday in Cihanjuang, a village in West Java’s Sumedang district. Some of the victims were rescuers from the first landslide.
Leading human rights group calls Israel an ‘apartheid’ state (AP) A leading Israeli human rights group has begun describing both Israel and its control of the Palestinian territories as a single “apartheid” regime, using an explosive term that the country’s leaders and their supporters vehemently reject. In a report released Tuesday, B’Tselem says that while Palestinians live under different forms of Israeli control in the occupied West Bank, blockaded Gaza, annexed east Jerusalem and within Israel itself, they have fewer rights than Jews in the entire area between the Mediterranean Sea and the Jordan River. “One of the key points in our analysis is that this is a single geopolitical area ruled by one government,” said B’Tselem director Hagai El-Ad. “This is not democracy plus occupation. This is apartheid between the river and the sea.” That a respected Israeli organization is adopting a term long seen as taboo even by many critics of Israel points to a broader shift in the debate as its half-century occupation of war-won lands drags on and hopes for a two-state solution fade.
Uganda bans social media ahead of presidential election (Reuters) Uganda banned social media on Tuesday, two days ahead of a presidential election pitting Yoweri Museveni, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders, against opposition frontrunner Bobi Wine, a popular singer. Internet monitor NetBlocks said its data showed that Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, Skype, Snapchat, Viber and Google Play Store were among a lengthy list of sites unavailable via Uganda’s main cell network operators. Campaigning ahead of the vote has been marred by brutal crackdowns on opposition rallies, which the authorities say break COVID-19 curbs on large gatherings. Rights groups say the restrictions are a pretext for muzzling the opposition. At 38, Wine is half the age of President Yoweri Museveni and has attracted a large following among young people in a nation where 80% of the population are under 30, rattling the ruling National Resistance Movement party.
Coronavirus-spurred changes to global workforce to be permanent (Reuters) Sweeping changes to the global labour market caused by the coronavirus pandemic will likely be permanent, policy makers said on Tuesday, as some industries collapse, others flourish and workers stay home. The pandemic, which has so far infected at least 90.5 million people and killed around 1.9 worldwide, has up-ended industries and workers in almost every country in the world as tough lockdowns were imposed. The International Labour Organization (ILO) has estimated that the impact of huge job losses worldwide is creating a fiscal gap that threatens to increase inequality between richer and poorer countries. The ILO estimated that global labour income declined by 10.7 per cent, or $3.5 trillion, in the first three quarters of 2020, compared with the same period in 2019, excluding government income support. India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said the pandemic had created an “accidental challenge” under which the government delivered food on a regular basis to 800 million people and provided sustained business funds. Philippines central bank Governor Benjamin Diokno said it was clear some industries will not survive, others will not be as dynamic as before, and yet others will be boosted by the massive changes. The need for a more nimble and innovative approach to education will remain long after the pandemic ends, said Helen Fulson, Chief Product Officer at educational publisher Twinkl. “How many children today will be doing jobs that currently don’t exist?’ she said at Reuters Next on Monday. “We don’t know how to train for these jobs.”

'Spa' strikes in resort towns sparkle shock over Mexico's illegal exploitation issue
It was a bizarre scene, particularly for two Mexican urban areas known more for seashores and the travel industry.
"We need equity!" yelled many individuals assembled at daybreak outside a state town hall in the seashore resort of Cancun on Thursday a week ago. The group, generally activists, understudies, and basic freedoms lawyers were agreeably astonished when their numbers expanded by the appearance of individuals from a bikers' club.
A few hours after the fact, similar dissidents appeared at another state town hall in the close by seashore resort of Playa del Carmen, reciting a similar message and including another: "No greater exemption!"
In the two cases, judges would hear proof about the state's greatest human dealing with assault years, including ladies from to the extent Argentina and Germany who were purportedly fooled into functioning as whores.
A supposed plan to bring ladies into Mexico
On the evening of July 30, officials under the order of the Quintana Roo's State's Attorney's Office assaulted two structures in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. They, at last, kept 13 individuals, twelve of whom were later summoned on charges of human dealing, among others.
As per Quintana Roo state Attorney General Óscar Montes de Oca, the presumes had held many ladies in imprisonment, numerous from outside nations.
"They promoted as a spa business; yet in all actuality, there were sexual acts occurring in those two spots where ladies were being misused," Montes de Oca told CNN in a meeting. In spite of the fact that they publicized independently, the two areas are accepted to have been controlled by similar individuals, the express' lawyer's office said.
Online promotions seen by CNN show the assaulted structures worked a business offering "the best escorts in Playa del Carmen" with photographs of insufficiently clad ladies, promoted as "accessible all day, every day."

The promotions ran on the dark web for quite a long time, Montes de Oca says, and was not handily found by the normal individual. It took crafted by his office's digital wrongdoings unit about seven days to discover the promotions and start the examination. Agents likewise utilized observation and other examination strategies, as indicated by the lawyer general.

Human dealing with Mexico
These cases, in what should be resort heavens, feature Mexico's not really mystery human dealing issue.
In a frightfully comparable case in November 2017, 24 unfamiliar ladies, including ten Venezuelans, were liberated during a Mexican Federal Police attack in Toluca, the capital of Mexico state. Like those in Cancun and Playa del Carmen, they had been guaranteed lucrative employments and made a trip to Mexico with vacationer visas, before being compelled to fill in as whores once in Mexico under dangers of savagery.
Many composed wrongdoing cartels have fanned into human dealing and sexual abuse. Mario Hidalgo Garfias, a previous Mexico City pimp who was indicted for human dealing, told CNN in 2015, "You can just sell a medication once, however you can sell a lady on many occasions."
Figures refered to in a 2019 US State Department report show the Mexican government announced recognizing 706 casualties in 2018, 667 the earlier year, and 740 of every 2016. NGOs state the genuine number of casualties could be a lot higher.

As indicated by that report, law requirement authorities, NGOs, and the UN state sorted out criminal gatherings are not just associated with human dealing, they have help: In at any rate 17 of Mexico's 32 states, criminal gatherings effectively made "coalitions with bureaucratic, state, and nearby government authorities" to carry out dealing and related violations, the report says.
For Claudia Lizaldi, a Mexican entertainer and basic freedoms dissident who appeared at the Cancun flight, the ideal opportunity for raising global mindfulness about this sort of wrongdoing is long past. "No one has the right to lose a kid to human dealing. No kid has the right to be a survivor of human dealing. No lady, paying little heed to her nation of the cause, ought to be a casualty of human dealing. We, as Mexicans, shouldn't need to endure this reality where Mexico is a top objective for sexual the travel industry," Lizardi said.
The message is picking up footing. José Alfredo Romero, pioneer of one of Mexico's biggest biker affiliations additionally appeared at the fights alongside many his gathering's individuals. "We are approaching the legal branch for equity for those casualties who were kept without wanting to and lived in imprisonment. They're in good company. Mexican individuals are here with them," Romero said outside the town hall.
A few activists state the two attacks in Cancun and Playa del Carmen are an abnormality in a nation where exemption rules. Various "No More Impunity" banners were held by nonconformists outside the Cancún and Playa del Carmen town halls.
Karla Jacinto, 28, a human dealing casualty who had to function as a whore for a long time across Mexico beginning when she was just 12, told CNN in 2015 that the individuals who should ensure her wound up mishandling her.
At some point, when she was working at a lodging known for prostitution, police appeared. They kicked out of the entirety of the clients, Jacinto says, and shut down the inn. She thought it was her day of reckoning - a police activity to save her and different young ladies.
Her help went rapidly to awfulness when the officials, around 30 she says, took the young ladies to a few rooms and began shooting video of them in bargaining positions. The young ladies were advised the recordings would be sent to their families in the event that they didn't do all that they inquired
Presently Jacinto is a notable basic liberties extremist who has taken her message against human dealing to Pope Francis at the Vatican and the U.S. Congress on the side of Megan's Law, which orders US specialists share data relating to American youngster sex wrongdoers when these convicts endeavor to travel abroad.

A team of 85 Cuban doctors and nurses arrived in Peru on June 3 to help the Andean nation tackle the coronavirus pandemic. That same day, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced another tightening of the sanctions screws. This time he targeted seven Cuban entities, including Fincimex, one of the principal financial institutions handling remittances to the country. Also targeted was Marriott International, which was ordered to cease operations in Cuba, and other companies in the tourism sector, an industry that constitutes 10 percent of Cuba’s GDP and has been devastated globally by the pandemic. It seems that the more Cuba helps the world, the more it gets hammered by the Trump administration. While Cuba has endured a U.S. embargo for nearly 60 years, Trump has revved up the stakes with a “maximum pressure” strategy that includes more than 90 economic measures placed against the nation since January 2019. Josefina Vidal, Cuba’s ambassador to Canada, called the measures “unprecedented in their level of aggression and scope” and designed to “deprive the country of income for the development of the economy.” Since its inception, the embargo has cost Cuba well over $130 billion dollars, according to a 2018 estimate. In 2018-2019 alone, the economic impact was $4 billion, a figure that does not include the impact of a June 2019 Trump administration travel ban aimed at harming the tourist industry. While the embargo is supposed to have humanitarian exemptions, the health sector has not been spared. Cuba is known worldwide for its universal public healthcare system, but the embargo has led to shortages of medicines and medical supplies, particularly for patients with AIDS and cancer. Doctors at Cuba’s National Institute of Oncology have had to amputate the lower limbs of children with cancer because the American companies that have a monopoly on the technology can’t sell it to Cuba. In the midst of the pandemic, the U.S. blocked a donation of facemasks and COVID-19 diagnostic kits from Chinese billionaire Jack Ma. Not content to sabotage Cuba’s domestic health sector, the Trump administration has been attacking Cuba’s international medical assistance, from the teams fighting coronavirus today to those who have travelled all over the world since the 1960’s providing services to underserved communities in 164 countries. The U.S. goal is to cut the island’s income now that the provision of these services has surpassed tourism as Cuba’s number one source of revenue. Labeling these volunteer medical teams “victims of human trafficking” because part of their salaries goes to pay for Cuba’s healthcare system, the Trump administration convinced Ecuador, Bolivia and Brazil to end their cooperation agreements with Cuban doctors. Pompeo then applauded the leaders of these countries for refusing “to turn a blind eye” to Cuba’s alleged abuses. The triumphalism was short lived: a month after that quote, the Bolsonaro government in Brazil begged Cuba to resend its doctors amid the pandemic. U.S. allies all over the world, including in Qatar, Kuwait, South Africa, Italy, Honduras and Peru have gratefully accepted this Cuban aid. So great is the admiration for Cuban doctors that a global campaign has sprung up to award them the Nobel Peace Prize. The Trump administration is not just libelling doctors, but the whole country. In May, the State Department named Cuba as one of five countries “not cooperating fully” in U.S. counterterrorism efforts. The main pretext was the nation’s hosting of members of Colombia’s National Liberation Army (ELN). Yet even the State Department’s own press release notes that ELN members are in Cuba as a result of “peace negotiation protocols.” Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez called the charges dishonest and “facilitated by the ungrateful attitude of the Colombian government” that broke off talks with the ELN in 2019. It should also be noted that Ecuador was the original host of the ELN-Colombia talks, but Cuba was asked to step in after the Moreno government abdicated its responsibilities in 2018. The classification of Cuba as “not cooperating” with counterterrorism could lead to Cuba being placed on the U.S. State Sponsors of Terrorism list, which carries tougher penalties. This idea was floated by a senior Trump administration official to Reuters last month. Cuba had been on this list from 1982 to 2015, despite that fact that, according to former State Department official Jason Blazakis, “it was legally determined that Cuba was not actively engaged in violence that could be defined as terrorism under any credible definition of the word.” Of course, the United States is in no position to claim that other countries do not cooperate in counterterrorism. For years, the U.S. harbored Luis Posada Carriles, mastermind of the bombing of a Cuban civilian airplane in 1976 that killed 73 people. More recently, the U.S. has yet to even comment on the April 30 attack on the Cuban Embassy in Washington D.C., when a man fired on the building with an automatic rifle. While there are certainly right-wing ideologues like Secretary Pompeo and Senator Rubio orchestrating Trump’s maximum pressure campaign, for Trump himself, Cuba is all about the U.S. elections. His hard line against the tiny island nation may have helped swing the Florida gubernatorial campaign during the midterm elections, yet it’s not clear that this will serve him well in a presidential year. According to conventional wisdom and polls, younger Cuban-Americans – who like most young people, don’t tend to vote in midterms – are increasingly skeptical of the U.S. embargo, and overall, Cuba isn’t the overriding issue for Cuban-Americans. Trump won the Cuban-American vote in 2016, but Hillary Clinton took between 41 and 47% percent of that electorate, significantly higher than any Democrat in decades. As an electoral strategy, these are signs that Trump’s aggression towards Cuba may not pay off. Of course, the strategy might not be just about votes but also about financing and ensuring that the Cuban-American political machinery is firmly behind Trump. The strategy has certainly not paid off when it comes to achieving the goal of regime change. The Trump administration is arguably farther from achieving regime change in Cuba now than the U.S. has ever been in over 60 years of intervention. During Trump’s tenure, Cuba calmly transitioned from the presidency of Raul Castro to that of Miguel Díaz-Canel. In 2019, Cuban voters overwhelmingly ratified a new constitution. These aren’t signs of a country on the brink of collapse. All Trump has achieved is making life more difficult for the island’s 11 million inhabitants, who, like people all over the world, have been battered by the economic impact from coronavirus. Tourism has collapsed. Income from remittances has tanked (both because of new U.S. restrictions and less income in the hands of the Cuban diaspora). Venezuela, once a major benefactor, is mired in its own crisis. But Cuba’s economy, which was forecast to contract by 3.7% before the pandemic hit, has been through worse, particularly during the 1991 to 2000 economic crisis known as the “special period” after the collapse of the Soviet Union. A change in the White House would bring some relief, although Joe Biden has staked a rather ambivalent position, saying he would restore relations as President Obama did, but adding that he was open to using sanctions as punishment for Cuba’s support to the Venezuelan government. It’s clear that from now until November, and perhaps for four more years, the Trump administration will pummel its island neighbor. Cuba will continue to seek global condemnation on the blockade (the 2019 UN vote was 187 against vs 3 in favor—the U.S., Brazil and Israel) and continue to show what a good neighbor looks like. It responded to these latest provocations in the way that only Cuba does: with more global solidarity, sending Covid-19 healing brigades to Guinea and Kuwait a day after the June 3 round of sanctions. A total of 26 countries now have Cuban medical personnel caring for their sick. That is the kind of goodwill that money just can’t buy and it greatly presents a stark contrast to the Trump administration’s shameful behavior during the pandemic. Back in March, as Cuban doctors arrived in Italy, former Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa tweeted: “One day we will tell our children that, after decades of movies and propaganda, at the moment of truth, when humanity needed help at a time when the great powers were in hiding, Cuban doctors began to arrive, without asking anything in return.” Medea Benjamin is an author/activist, and cofounder of the peace group CODEPINK. Leonardo Flores is a Latin American policy expert and a campaign coordinator with CODEPINK. For more on the Nobel Prize for Cuban Doctors campaign, see www.cubanobel.org.
