Chapter 1
CW: SFW, Language (who are we kidding), Vought, bad spelling
Silence was all there was in the VOUGHT tower as The Boys and Soldier Boy faced each other after finding out what they were looking for all along to kill Homelander didn’t actually work. Queen Maeve, unfortunately, taking the brunt of Soldier Boy’s main attack, leaving her unconscious and powerless.
“Is she okay?” a nervous Hughie asks from his position while Starlight–Annie–checks Maeve’s pulse. Her shoulders slump in relief and a sigh passes her lips
“She’s alive, I don’t know about her powers, though,” Annie informs the rooms of humans and Supes. “Good. We’ll need to stage this as her death, though, yeah?” Butcher adds, coming down from his own Temp-V high after his fight with Homelander. The surrounding group of The Boys nod in agreement– Queen Maeve had served her time on The Seven and now deserved a well-earned break from VOUGHT forever.
“Well there goes our chance at surprise, folks.” Butcher sighed out as he looked around the room at the group. With his hands on his hips, he looked at Soldier Boy with a look of expectancy. “The fuck you lookin’ at me for, pal?” Soldier Boy asked with exasperation, “‘Think I got some sort of ace up my goddamn sleeve for you? I gave you what I had and you threw that away for some little pussy with daddy issues called Homelander.” Soldier Boy spat toward Butcher, pacing the destroyed room.
“You fuckers are the ones who woke me up and took me from Russia to kill this motherfucker, which obviously did not work. So, now, what do you got?” Ben ends, panting as his chest slowly began to heat up, literally and figuratively. “You didn’t get everyone from Payback, did you?” Hughie asks tentatively, trying to lighten the tense atmosphere. “When you gave us the list of your team, you left a name out. Why?” Ben freezes, turned away from The Boys.
“How in the hell do you fuckin’ know that, spaghetti arms?” Ben asks, his voice shaking in slight anger. Hughie attempts to answer with a confident voice, but instead comes out nervous and shaky. “W-well when you look at the picture of Payback, there are nine members standing right, but there are seven dead, not eight, so who is she?” He straightens his posture as he asks Soldier Boy. “Who is the third woman in the picture that we haven’t fucking smashed in the head or blown to pieces with your atomic bomb of a body.” Hughie is shaky and breathing hard as he looks at Soldier Boy. “Who do we need to find next for help?!” He shouts in frustration and desperation, walking away to breathe, Starlight not far behind him. After a few minutes of breathing to calm himself down, Soldier Boy finally answers Hughie’s question.
“Russia.” He answers in a pained voice. “She’s in Russia.” He hangs his head, painful memories surfing through his mind as he answers the team. “She’s being held by the Russians just like I was until you fucknuts busted me out.” Soldier Boy grits out, angry that he was the only one standing without her.
“Alright, guv. Who is the lass to you? And–” Mothers Milks cuts Butcher off after sirens are head blaring outside “Alright we gotta get outta here before all of NYPD and VOUGHT security finds us!” M.M. Exclaims to the group. “We can get more on the girl when we find Grace, deal?” Not waiting for a group reply, he turns and makes his way out, the group following behind.

30 Days of “Ashes to Ashes” - Day 9
Tumblr media
Day 9 - What’s your favourite Gene moment?
Oh my Guv... Let me just begin by saying that Gene Hunt is a character you need to have a more expanded brain in order to appreciate him. Because if you merely look at him using today’s standards, all you’ll see is a brute, racist, sexist and fascist pig. I feel sorry for those that can't see beyond this surface and can’t comprehend more complex characters whose beauty lies underneath and not just in their pretty blue eyes (which he has!♥).
Gene Hunt’s great moments are hard to pick because they usually come combined with a classic Huntism, meaning one brief moment of glory and then that mouth, as dear Michael Caine so hilariously put it! Personally, I LOVE him for that. I love that Gene does not do appearances or caress your ears with soft fake words, yet he’s open to learn, even if he takes his time. There’s a reason why everybody respects him, despite his mannerisms. And you see it from early on that, while he takes certain liberties with Alex, he won’t let any friggin soul disrespect her. Not even himself. And I don’t mean those vocal wars they had going on between them every day. Those were their air to breathe, their foreplay (hello, House and Cuddy anyone?). I don’t mean words, I mean in ACTIONS, which is where Gene Hunt's true self lies.
So my favourite moment of his is when he showed unquestionable trust to Alex. When he knew that someone close to him betrayed him, yet never even considered Alex would do such a thing. When he openly asked her to “Stay” by his side as he discovered who the traitor was. Gene Hunt has built a loyal team and the only person that questioned his everything, from the way he handled cases to the smell of his aftershave, was the only person he trusted blindly in that moment of doubt. The only person he felt comfortable enough to show up to their house after hours utterly broken and drunk. The only person he let see how much this treason cost him when in front of his team he remained strong and... Well, the Guv. You tell me Gene Hunt did not respect Alex Drake? You’re wrong. He respected the hell out of her, even more because she challenged him and trusted her instincts, which is exactly what he’s tried to teach his team to do all this time.
“You and me, Bolly. You and me.”

So I finished Dragon Quest XI and I have some Thoughts™
Spoilers for everything past Act I. Warning for longer-than-anticipated length.
I wish the story of Act III didn’t come at the expense of overwriting Act II.
The events of the Last Bastion were perhaps my favorite in the entire game. You’re now in a world of ruin -- the direct consequence of the Luminary being unable to protect the Sword of Light. The only person keeping humanity from completely succumbing to despair is the same guy who spent much of Act I hunting you down. And the man who sentenced you to eternal imprisonment, ordered your hometown razed, and was Mordegon’s freakin’ puppet for nearly 2 decades... now wants you to work alongside your past pursuer.
It’s all great and necessary drama and sets up some amazing character development for Hendrik. His joining felt like a natural progression of his character arc. He even helps give some desperately needed definition for Jasper by giving us insights into the other’s character and providing the player with a motive for Jasper’s behavior. The whole spiel about him being our sword, shield, and unswerving companion doesn’t feel like some forced one-liner because it was earned through our world-changing teamwork.
..... Act III basically kills Jasper off immediately, so RIP his chances at becoming something more. Like, Hendrik is shook for all of 2 seconds and just kind of shrugs off that he saw his brother-in-arms get cut down in front of him based on testimony he couldn’t confirm. (Though to be fair, his display of blind loyalty and trust in Carnelian is very in-character).
But when Hendrik decides to ally with the Luminary, it doesn’t feel as earnest as it did in Act II. Act III Hendrik sees Mordegon’s evil firsthand, yes, but his motives for siding with us include revenge for his homeland and to simply investigate the fallen Lantern -- not acknowledgment of the Luminary’s true role in the world and a newfound desire to support it. No, Hendrik -- you don’t get to say you’re my unswerving companion anymore, ya cheese block.
And can I just say poor freakin’ Serena???
Killing off Veronica was the ballsiest thing this game did and up until the very moment of the reveal, I was waiting for a fake-out lol. I'm normally not a fan of the “character dies to help another character develop”, but I like how this was handled. Even though they were twins with equal responsibilities, you could tell that Veronica was always the more proactive half. But as evidenced in their tent conversation, she wanted Serena to grow more independent because Veronica acknowledge the unpleasant possibility that they might not always be together forever.
Veronica dies (womp), Serena understands the weight of her sister’s sacrifice, and makes a promise to herself to become someone the Luminary can count on. We get a culturally-significant scene of her cutting off her hair and she basically becomes Serenica re-reborn. It’s all very awesome and badass, and I think having her show such resilience in the face of her sister’s death but finally succumbing to her sadness when alone with the Luminary was a beautiful moment.
But in Act III, Veronica is alive! :))) So all of those developments just gets completely undone!! And what’s worst, Act II Serena knows that the Luminary will get to see Veronica again, but she won’t!!! That’s fucked up, guv!!!!
These two instances aren’t nearly everything I had umbrage with during this part of the game so here’s the TLDR version: ACT III made meaningless nearly every emotionally impactful scene experienced in the prior two Acts.
But I get it. I get the logistics of why things were done in Act III the way they were. I understand that because Act III is a different timeline, rather than a hard overwrite, all of the events experienced in Act II are technically canon. And I understand that Act III is a completely optional endeavor covering a different type of story.
I guess ultimately my gripes come from how deeply Act III “undid” the progress of Act II. It made me feel cheated out of all the hard work I did to relocate my friends and bring back light to the world. It’s not a shallow change say like... in Dragon Quest VIII, where the post-game does nothing more than give an origin story for the Hero and one extra detail within the ending.
So despite what I just wrote, this isn’t to say I don’t think Act III should not have happened at all. I love expanded gameplay opportunities and actually had a lot of fun with all the new trials and seeing an Act I.5 world. Shoutout to Act III Jade having an actual -- albeit completely optional -- development moment that was robbed from her in Act II! And Serenica’s tale was satisfying to see through to its happy ending.
I’d do it all again. <3

Brownish versus the Board of Education and learning
In 1951, thirteen family members in the tiny area of Topeka, Kansas gatheringed to do something about an unjustified circumstance. The board of education and learning of their area was enabling racial segregation in the school system based on an out of date 1879 law. The leader of this team of worried moms and dads was Oliver J. Brown and also the result of what started out as a couple of moms and dads aiming to make life much better for their kids became one of the most notorious and also influential high court cases in history known as Brown versus the Board of Education. The practice of institution segregation had actually become an usual and also approved practice in American society despite many activities in the background of civil rights to stop the splitting up of black society from white. The validation that partition provided a "separate however equivalent" setup which profited education, the reality was it was a very finely veiled attempt to deprive African American youngsters of the quality of education and learning that individuals should master the modern-day globe. The instance continuouslied collect momentum till it came prior to the High court in Could of 1954. The choice was spectacular and decisive when it returned 9-0. The statement of the court was short, eloquent and to the factor specifying that "separate instructional centers are inherently unequal." Currently also such a clear-cut statement from the High court did not finish the battle in between segregationists and also those who would certainly end the technique that denied African American kids of quality education. In 1957 the Arkansas governor tried to block the integration of schools in his state and also the only thing that might stop him was the intervention of government troops sent out by Head of state Eisenhower. A similar but a lot more well publicized event took place in Alabama where Guv George Wallace literally blocked black students from entering the University of Alabama. It took the intervention of government marshals to literally remove him to ensure that the unwritten law, as mandated by The Supreme Court, was executed. As well as the unwritten law then and also forever since then was that segregation was prohibited in this country. Given that this site choice, there have actually been other more smart attempts to reanimate segregation. Yet over the decades, perspectives have actually moved to where such sights on exactly how our social organizations are established are taken into consideration old made as well as uneducated. The assimilation of the institutions was a vital step in the ongoing struggle to create a really equivalent society and to boost the opportunities of black kids to mature with the very same chances as all other kids in this country. As an increasing number of African American youngsters ended up being well educated, the black populace has had the ability to make a solid payment to the society as well as to the development of knowledge in every self-control of knowing. Even more, the growing enlightened black population caused the black center course which matched culture from a financial perspective. As African Americans started to participate in all of the economic opportunities that center course success afforded them, the possibilities for whites, blacks as well as individuals of all races as well as cultures to mix has actually been healthy to heal the scars of racism as well as slowly eliminate departments in the culture. However possibly the most vital end result of assimilation of the colleges is the possibility it has offered for kids of all races to discover, play and expand together. As young black and white pupils have actually participated in courses, mosted likely to football games and also hung out at pep rallies with each other, they have actually become friends. They have actually had possibilities to interact on groups as well as interact socially under lots of circumstances and also as that has actually ended up being the social norm, bigotry started to vaporize from the hearts of young America. Because of this, young people of modern times view on racism as a strange as well as primitive viewpoint from long ago and not symphonious with an up to day sight of the globe. This kind of true acceptance both by whites towards blacks and also by blacks towards whites will go additionally to lastly end racial splitting up and intolerance more than any kind of trouble or protest or march or even ruling from the Supreme Court might ever before do. And we have Oliver Brown which tiny team of parents from Topeka, Kansas to say thanks to for this. By doing exactly what was best for their kids, they did something fantastic for all of The U.S.A.' university as for generations to come. 748

The #Historic #Ghosttown of #Lund #Utah. It's with a heavy and sad heart that I see these ghost towns and #miningcamps vanishing from off the face of the western landscape. It's either vandals and treasure hunters destroying these irreplaceable memories or the US Government and corporate partnerships who tear down century old structures like pioneer #homesteads and mining ruins, mills, and historic buildings. I see the irony and hypocrisy when the Department of the Interior is telling the public to respect archeology sites while the other arm of the guv floods Glen Canyon and thousands of native indigenous archeology and sacred sites under water or is demolishing an entire ghost town down to rubble like a historic mining camp once known as #GoldSprings west of #CedarCity near the #Utah #Nevada #Stateline. It's heartbreaking that our history (no matter your skin color/culture) is being erased by "them" and I'm seeing this process quickly destroying these places. I spent an entire day trying to document Gold Springs and it's all rubble and what a #heartbreak that is! We need to document these old places before they are gone forever. I get a strong sense that they are killing our histories to where there's nothing left but the goals and achievements of their colonialism and corporatism...it angers me to no end!

Canadians May be banned from Entering The US forever if they smoke legal Marijuana
Tumblr media
In less than a month, Canada’s 10 provinces and 3 areas will join 9 American states and Washington D.C. that have completely legislated the recreational intake of cannabis.
But even after October 17th, a Canadian who drives from Vancouver to Seattle may be asked by a border agent if they have actually smoked pot in the past, and if they say yes, they might get prohibited from entry to the U.S. for life, despite the fact that pot is legal in Washington state.
Marijuana stays illegal under U.S. federal law, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has actually long sought to keep those who consume the substance out of the nation.
The assumption by the Canadian legal neighborhood had been that this border policy would pertain to an end following legalization. Nevertheless, the United States federal government validated previously this month that the policy will continue to use the rule that Canadians crossing into the U.S. after October 17th, and CBP has actually stated that changes in a foreign country’s laws will not impact their practices in the house.
” This is U.S. law, and under U.S. federal law, cannabis remains prohibited”, a representative from CBP informed the media
Canada’s ministries of Justice and Public Safety, which are collectively overseeing the procedure of cannabis legalization, have said they are continuing to work carefully with the United States government to make sure that there is a little interruption for Canadians taking a trip to the United States as possible once cannabis is legalized next month.
Nevertheless, they stressed that “despite one-in-eight Canadians utilizing cannabis today, 400,000 people move between our two countries every day nearly completely without incident.”
The Canadian federal government has long advised its citizens not to lie if a U.S. border representative asks about their pot use.
If a representative is able to discover evidence from someone who declares they have actually not smoked pot before that indicates otherwise, they can still be banned from entry to the U.S. anyhow– in this case, for lying to a customs officer.
At least one American legal representative has actually argued that this could even apply to the premier – the Canadian equivalent of a guv – of a province, since of government-owned dispensaries in locations consisting of British Columbia and Québec.
CBP verified that anyone who works in the cannabis industry could be subject to a restriction from entry to the U.S., whether they work for a government-run pot dispensary or one in the economic sector. “Operating in or helping with the proliferation of the cannabis market in Canada, or U.S. states where it is deemed legal, might affect a foreign national’s admissibility to the United States”, a spokesperson said.
In spite of the ban on pot smokers and pot sellers, the United States federal government seems to have less of a problem with actual pot entering the U.S. from Canada.
Canadians who end up getting hit with a lifetime restriction at the border can request a waiver from CBP that will permit them to come to America. Once they request it– at an expense of over $500, there’s no assurance that waiver will be approved.
Meanwhile, American migrants residing in Canada, along with American tourists returning house from a journey to Canada, will not have to worry about being locked out of their house country if they smoked legal pot north of the border: CBP’s policy just applies to foreign nationals.

opulence. (darkest dungeon! au drabble)
(( I’m placing this under a readmore. There is some seriously horrific stuff in here, as per spec when it comes to Darkest Dungeon. I am warning you now: trigger warnings for intense violence and body horror are in effect.))
You remember our venerable church, opulent and imperial...
It was Longfinger Kirk, there in the lead, who first spotted the little cabal of Deacons huddled ‘round something on the other end of the corridor. He held up a hand to stop the little procession behind him; Heysel, Leonhard and...Creighton, he believed the wanderer’s name was, didn’t even have a Finger title yet--all came to a halt.
“Wot is it?” hissed Creighton. “We don’t ‘ave a lot of time--”
“Shh!” hissed Kirk. “They--”
A corridor is not a good place to be standing when even a novice pyromancer spots you, and the Deacons of the Deep were no novices. A fireball washed over the crew in a brutal wave, and a chorus of pain echoed off the walls. Left with little other option, all four charged into the room to face the three Deacons head on. Kirk landed the first blow, a vicious swipe across a rotting priest’s throat, and the hissing creature hit its knees, grasping at the ragged wound.
Leonhard, who’d been directly behind Kirk, danced past long enough to make a broad, sweeping gesture with his shotel. Furiously bright radiance glimmered along the blade and then leapt forth, biting into the flesh of another priest. This one didn’t immediately go down, though he was obviously wounded, and rallied with another fireball, which struck Kirk directly across the faceplate of his helmet. The heat must have been enough to get through, because the thorned knight snarled in pain.
Heysel finished the Longfinger’s assailant off with a soul shower, which managed to clip the arm of the last Deacon as well, disrupting the creature’s casting. Creighton took the opportunity to rush the priest with his axe and struck twice along either shoulder. Half-decapitated, the decaying thing fell backward, a storm of robes and dangling flesh.
The sounds of the brief melee faded, leaving the little crew wrapped in newly menacing silence. They stood there for a time, each trying and failing not to notice the hideous expressions of the victims they’d scattered along the floor.
Except for Creighton.
Were it not for a strange disinclination to disturb the ensuing quiet, he might have been gloating. As it were, he satisfied himself with leering at each body the same way a predator leers at a fresh kill. If Heysel hadn’t tapped him on the shoulder to indicate they were moving on, he might have started cutting off trophies.
They stayed silent as they moved into the next corridor, which in turn led to a set of stairs. From somewhere near the bottom of the flight, they could all hear a strange, keening moan periodically climb upward past their ears.
“What is that?” muttered Heysel, gripping her pick in one hand all the more tightly.
“Our goddess,” growled the Ringfinger. “And their foul corruption of her…”
“No,” said Kirk. “They shall not have her…”
“Yes they bloody will if we don’t get down those stairs,” snapped Creighton. “On with you, guv, and the rest of us after!”
If Heysel didn’t know better, she might have thought Creighton sounded excited for what was certainly going to be a brawl. The rest of the Deacons had to be down there, and there were only four of them…
Had she not been wearing the strange wrap across her face, the battle of faith and fear currently vying for Heysel’s expression would’ve been obvious. As it was, there was only the faintest tremble in her voice as she responded: “Right.”
Absolutely none of them were prepared for what greeted them upon their emergence from the stairwell, however.
Strewn almost lecherously across a large bed was their goddess, bloated nearly beyond recognition; deep cuts along her flesh trickled blood along still pallid skin. Her long, dark hair had fallen over her face, hiding her expression. Several Deacons stood in a circle around the bed, striking at her inert form with their candlesticks. Each time they drew the instruments away, traces of thick, black ichor fell away as though they’d be doused in it.
Only every so often did the ruined goddess react, her body flexing with the effort of the pained moan.
Kirk’s cry of incoherent rage reached the ceiling and fell again, echoing and rebounding off of the walls of the room--and, throwing caution aside, he charged into the crowd, hacking and slashing at anything within reach. Heads were parted from necks; arms struck cleanly from shoulders splashed to the floor--his madness-fueled rampage was only halted when the Deacons not surrounding the bed closed in around him. Their candlesticks rose, and even as the rest of the group advanced to save their comrade, their candlesticks fell. What began as a chorus of clanking metal against metal became a staccato of wet thuds as Kirk’s armor gave way beneath the assault. By the time Heysel had driven her pick into the back of one of the Deacon’s heads, crushing the rotted skull as though it were an overripe fruit, Kirk’s brief shout of pain had been silenced.
The Ringfinger was, initially, having a better time of it; the shotel proved effective against unarmored foes, and his was a more measured assault on the mob’s right flank. He was trying to cut his way toward the goddess that way, relying on the distraction of Creighton and Heysel to keep them from cornering him--which, so far, was working, because an enraged Heysel had taken to casting arrays of Soul Darts in hopes of thinning the herd. Creighton was blood-mad, having taken up opposite Leonhard with his axe. The mob fell in droves before his infuriated advance, though whether it was faith or sheer bloodlust that drove the wanderer wasn’t clear--whatever it was, it saw his axe crushing skull after shoulder after ribcage in a ruthless culling of whoever was in front of him.
Between their efforts, the three managed to kill all of them without further casualties. Heysel found herself almost grateful that the bodies had fallen in a way as to obscure the ruined gore that was once Longfinger Kirk.
But now, they stood before their goddess in horrified silence, watching the slow rise and fall of her breathing. They couldn’t see her face beneath the mass of messy black hair, and now they could see where her bared skin was stained with the foul ichor. There was, thankfully, no more of the moaning--but now…
“Wot do you do wiv ‘er?” said Creighton, his voice somehow irreverent in the quiet. “You can’t leave ‘er like that…”
The Ringfinger caught on immediately and jerked his shotel upward. “You’re still bloodmad, wanderer,” he spat. “You just want to kill something else.”
“Won’t she be reborn, though?” the wanderer protested. “I mean, thass the ‘ole point, innit?”
“You--”
They were both silenced, very suddenly, by a pair of Soul Darts aimed directly at their throats. Surprise bloomed in Creighton’s eyes as his hands went to his neck, trying to stem the sudden flow of blood past parted flesh, but there was no stopping it. Within moments, both of the men were dead, leaving Heysel alone in the room with the hideous thing.
“No one is to know, goddess,” muttered Heysel, there in the dim chamber, as she prepared another spell. “No one is to know what you’ve become. They shall remember you, always, and that way you’ll still live forever…”
The point of her pick descended past the mass of hair into the creature’s head once, then twice; the second time, she felt something give, and the goddess’ body twitched violently as death claimed her. The spell, still humming at the end of her catalyst, zipped upward, and a shower of bright blue arrows descended upon the pair. Heysel did not survive her own assault, and fell next to the goddess’ stilled form.
“You remember our goddess, opulent and imperial…” she breathed, and then went silent.

Piglets terminated, chickens gassed as pandemic slams meat sector
CHICAGO (Reuters) – With the pandemic hobbling the meat-packing market, Iowa farmer Al Van Beek had no place to ship his mature pigs to make room for the 7,500 piglets he got out of his reproducing operation. The crisis required a choice that still troubles him: He purchased his staff members to offer injections to the pregnant plants, one by one, that would trigger them to terminate their baby pigs.
Van Beek and other farmers state they have no choice but to choose animals as they run short on area to house their animals or cash to feed them, or both. The world’s biggest meat business – including Smithfield Foods Inc, Cargill Inc, JBS USA and Tyson Foods Inc – have halted operations at about 20 slaughterhouses and processing plants in North America considering that April as workers fall ill, stiring global fears of a meat lack.
Van Beek’s piglets are victims of a sprawling food-industry crisis that began with the mass closure of restaurants – overthrowing that sector’s supply chain, overwhelming storage and forcing farmers and processors to damage everything from milk to salad greens to animals. Processors prepared to serve the food-service industry can’t immediately switch to providing supermarket.
Countless pigs, chickens and livestock will be euthanized due to the fact that of slaughterhouse closures, restricting materials at grocers, said John Tyson, chairman of leading U.S. meat provider Tyson Foods.
Pork has actually been hit specifically hard, with daily production cut by about a 3rd. Unlike cattle, which can be housed outside on pasture, U.S. hogs are fattened up for slaughter inside temperature-controlled buildings. If they are housed too long, they can get too huge and hurt themselves. The barns need to be cleared out by sending adult hogs to slaughter prior to the arrival of brand-new piglets from plants that were fertilized just before the pandemic.
” We have no place to choose the pigs,” stated Van Beek, who regreted the waste of a lot meat. “What are we going to do?”
In Minnesota, farmers Kerry and Barb Mergen felt their hearts pound when a team from Daybreak Foods Inc showed up with carts and tanks of carbon dioxide to euthanize their 61,000 egg-laying hens previously this month.
Daybreak Foods, based in Lake Mills, Wisconsin, supplies liquid eggs to dining establishments and food-service companies. The company, which owns the birds, pays agreement farmers like the Mergens to feed and care for them. Motorists typically pack the eggs onto trucks and transport them to a plant in Big Lake, Minnesota, which utilizes them to make liquid eggs for dining establishments and ready-to-serve dishes for food-service business. But the plant’s operator, Cargill Inc, said it idled the center because the pandemic reduced need.
Daybreak Foods, which has about 14.5 million hens with contractor-run or company-owned farms in the Midwest, is trying to change equipments and ship eggs to grocery stores, stated President William Rehm. But egg cartons remain in shortage nationwide and the business now must grade each egg for size, he stated.
Rehm declined to state how much of the business’s flock has actually been euthanized.
” We’re trying to balance our supply with our customers’ requirements, and still keep everybody safe – including all of our people and all our hens,” Rehm said.
DISCARDING HOGS IN A LANDFILL
In Iowa, farmer Dean Meyer stated he becomes part of a group of about 9 producers who are euthanizing the tiniest 5%of their newly born pigs, or about 125 piglets a week. They will continue euthanizing animals till disruptions ease, and could increase the variety of pigs killed each week, he stated. The small bodies are composted and will become fertilizer. Meyer’s group is also killing mom hogs, or sows, to minimize their numbers, he said.
” Packers are supported every day, a growing number of,” stated Meyer.
As the United States deals with a possible food lack, and supermarkets and food banks are struggling to meet need, the forced slaughters are becoming more prevalent across the country, according to farming economic experts, farm trade groups and federal lawmakers who are speaking with farmer constituents.
Iowa Guv Kim Reynolds, together with both U.S. senators from a state that supplies a 3rd of the country’s pork, sent out a letter to the Trump administration advocating financial aid and help with culling animals and effectively dealing with their carcasses.

” There are 700,000 pigs throughout the nation that can not be processed weekly and needs to be humanely euthanized,” stated the April 27 letter.
The U.S. Department of Farming (USDA) stated late Friday it is developing a National Occurrence Coordination Center to help farmers find markets for their livestock, or euthanize and dispose of animals if essential.
Some manufacturers who reproduce animals and offer child pigs to farmers are now providing away free of charge, farmers said, equating to a loss about $38 on each piglet, according to commodity company Kerns & Associates.
Farmers in surrounding Canada are likewise killing animals they can’t sell or pay for to feed. The worth of Canadian isoweans – infant pigs– has been up to zero since of U.S. processing plant disruptions, stated Rick Bergmann, a Manitoba hog farmer and chair of the Canadian Pork Council. In Quebec alone, a backlog of 92,000 pigs awaits slaughter, stated Quebec hog manufacturer Rene Roy, an executive with the pork council.
A hog farm on Prince Edward Island in Canada euthanized 270- pound hogs that were prepared for massacre since there was no location to process them, Bergmann stated. The animals were discarded in a garbage dump.
DEATH RISKS
The latest economic catastrophe to befall the farm sector comes after years of severe weather condition, drooping product costs and the Trump administration’s trade war with China and other crucial export markets. It’s more than lost income. The pandemic barreling through farm towns has actually mired rural neighborhoods in anguish, a potent mix of shame and sorrow.
Farmers take pride in the truth that their crops and animals are implied to feed people, specifically in a crisis that has actually idled countless employees and required numerous to rely on food banks. Now, they’re damaging crops and killing animals for no function.
Farmers flinch when speaking about exterminating animals early or plowing crops into the ground, for worry of public wrath. Two Wisconsin dairy farmers, forced to discard milk by their buyers, informed Reuters they just recently received confidential death risks.
” They say, ‘How attempt you get rid of food when many individuals are hungry?’,” said one farmer, speaking on condition of anonymity. “They do not understand how farming works. This makes me ill, too.”
Even as livestock and crop costs plunge, costs for meat and eggs at grocery stores are up. The typical retail price of eggs was up almost 40%for the week ended April 18, compared to a year previously, according to Nielsen information. Average retail fresh chicken costs were up 5.4%, while beef was up 5.8%and pork up 6.6%.
On Van Beek’s farm in Rock Valley, Iowa, one hog broke a leg because it grew too heavy while waiting to be butchered. He has actually provided pigs to facilities that are still operating, but they are too full to take all of his animals.
Van Beek paid $2,000 to truck pigs about 7 hours to a Smithfield plant in Illinois, more than quadruple the usual expense to carry them to a Sioux Falls, South Dakota, slaughterhouse that the company has actually closed forever. He said Smithfield is supposed to pay the additional transport costs under his agreement. But the business is refusing to do so, declaring “force majeure”– that a remarkable and unforeseeable event avoids it from satisfying its arrangement.
Smithfield, the world’s largest pork processor, declined to discuss whether it has actually declined to make contracted payments. It said the company is working with suppliers “to navigate these difficult and unprecedented times.”
Hog farmers nationwide will lose an approximated $5 billion, or $37 per head, for the rest of the year due to pandemic interruptions, according to the market group National Pork Producers Council.
A recently announced $19 billion U.S. government coronavirus help package for farmers will not pay for livestock that are culled, according to the American Farm Bureau Federation, the nation’s biggest farmer trade group. The USDA stated in a declaration the payment program is still being developed and the company has received more requests for assistance than it has cash to handle.

Minnesota farmer Mike Patterson began feeding his pigs more soybean hulls– which fill animals’ stomachs however provide minimal dietary value– to keep them from getting too large for their barns. He’s considering euthanizing them since he can not find adequate buyers after Smithfield forever shut its huge Sioux Falls plant.
” They have to be housed humanely,” Patterson said. “If there’s not enough room, we need to have less hogs somehow. One method or another, we’ve got to have less hogs.”

someone in my psych class today decided to complain about warm weather people getting freaked out at an inch of snow—which i lowkey got because snow isn’t that freaky; your whole lives don’t have to stop because of it; just fucking chill—but i got so defensive so fast because northerners are little bitches, too???
we had a windstorm a couple of years back and the winds got up to 80-90 mph and knocked out the power for five whole towns, and everyone fucking freaked out because the wind was strong. my hurricane surviving ass was straight up outdoors, under the trees, having a blast because i love me some wind, and, also, 80-90mph???? not a big deal???? thanks for the breeze, Mother Nature???
pointed this out to the guv in my psych class, and everyone started trying to defend it, like, “trees were knocked over. the power went out. entire power lines were destroyed.” and i just—
you know your trees don’t grow deep roots here? imma go ahead and say it’s your fault for leaving them in front of your house (because it’s always the lone tree standing at the front that falls) when you’re oh so willing to chop down the rest (“but the aesthetic” put a sock in it, ellen, no one asked). and the power lines? they go down constantly. maybe that’s a greater issue not caused by the wind? and for the record, it was freezing temperatures, so i get it, but i went to school with richy rich kids (literally fuck them ohmygoodness get some self awareness, yo, your family’s money isn’t going to be there forever jfc) and they were all like, “boohoo we have to use our generators and our maids keep complaining about not having power wAHHHHH” and like
bruvs
you’re kidding me, right?
we called in favors to be able to fucking shower. we cocooned ourselves in five million blankets and sweaters to sleep through the night. we turned off our phones to conserve battery life. we literally did not move. and you’re complaining because your wifi is a tad slower and your maids are realizing they don’t get paid enough to afford a generator of their own? y’all deserved that power outage, damn.
tl;dr: northerners, y’all ain’t shit. you get just as freaked as southerners over the same stupid ass bullshit. the day we get an honest to goodness hurricane, imma look at them all and ask them why they learned nothing from the three little pigs.
(and, if y’all are curious, they get just as freaked over too much snow, except their freak out level is three feet—which is basically our equivalent of an inch in warm weather, so it’s still fucking stupid)
