LM aeronautics president Greg Ulmer declines to state how many F-35s are in storage but expects to start delivering 20 aircraft per month, comprising seven stored and 13 newly-built aircraft. He estimates that it will take 10-12 months to clear off the backlog. (1/5) 🧵

Wow,
I want to tell a story.
Through a long and convoluted series of events, I ended up going from a fairly high paid Software engineer career to becoming a High School Math/Computer Science teacher. Weirdly, I ended up being very good at this but didn’t stay at it very long because I didn’t like the culture (and I had a much freer schedule and made a lot more money as a engineering seminar instructor — my next job). Not being indoctrinated (aka “formally trained”) as a teacher, I tended to color outside the lines a lot but, I wouldn’t have gotten the job if there wasn’t a need and, as much as the superintendent didn’t like (aka “hated”) me, they had trouble arguing with my success. I kept the kids engaged and they learned the material (I have a brag story: the kids in my remedial “math models” class, tested in the top 97% on the Texas state competency exam — then called the TAKS test. Again, this was a remedial math class — they didn’t allow me to teach more advanced math).

Part of my responsibility was to teach “Drug Awareness” in my home room (it was a State requirement. Well, technically, it was a Federal mandate administered through the State). The State, “helpfully”, provided teaching materials. For the first week or so I dutifully passed on the state materials to my students but grew increasingly uncomfortably with it. One Monday, I showed up in my class room to find the Secretary had left a stack of the upcoming week’s Drug Awareness teaching materials on my desk. The top lesson was on “huffing” and literally started with a line something like, “you may not be aware of this but there are many items in your household that you can inhale to get high.” (with a useful cartoon of a garage and a kitchen cabinet highlighting where to find these magic inebriants). I flopped into my chair and said, “oh hell, no!” I pulled out my laptop and went to the state site to see what my requirements were for teaching Drug Awareness. It turned out the requirements were very vague and I was NOT required to use the state material. As my kids started trickling into home room, I had to come up with an idea for my own “Drug Awareness” lecture. I drew an MTV logo on the whiteboard. The kids got excited wondering what we were going to be discussing. When I got them all settled down I said, “do you know what this is?” They all said “the MTV logo” and I said, “sort of but you’re mis-saying it. You’re supposed to say the word for the last letter.” I had to clarify this a couple of times before the kids were saying, “MTVision” but, frustratingly, they still weren’t getting it, so I made them repeat it over and over, “MTVision, MTVision, MTVision” A few of the kids were now saying, “ I don’t get it Mister O. What’s the point?” and I said, listen to what you’re saying, and it finally clicked, “Empty Vision!”
Because of my own interest, I had a fairly large library of moral philosophy quotes, so everyday before homeroom filed in, I’d write a quote on the whiteboard: H.L. Mencken, Thomas Sowell (my personal favorite), Ludwig von Mises, Mark Twain, Thomas Jefferson, Aldous Huxley, P. J. O'Rourke, Seneca, Malcom X, Abraham Lincoln, Benjamm Franklin, Theodore Dalrymple, etc. I even laced in some dark side quote from Edward Bernays, his student Joseph Goebbel, Adolph Hitler, etc. then we’d have a colloquy about what the author meant to say and what it means to us. At one point some of the kids spoke up and challenged me on what this has to do with “Drug Awareness”. I explained that the guidelines for teaching “Drug Awareness” were pretty loose and I thought it might be more productive to learn about how the world works rather than getting you up to speed with current Drug Culture, my theory is, “if you understand that your life has purpose, you won’t want to interfere with that purpose by doing drugs.”
At the same time the challenge made me nervous. I had just gotten chewed out, in front of my Math Models class because the Superintendent had discovered I had, literally, thrown out the course material. (On the first day of class, as the kids filed in, I overheard them calling the class, “stupid people’s math”. I didn’t like that but, looking at the text book, I got their point, so, again, I went to the state site to see what was required to fulfill my teaching requirements, made a big show of dropping the textbook into my garbage can at the beginning of the next days class (this was for dramatic effect. I retrieved it after class — school property and all) and started a two pronged approach to teaching the kids: I taught them how to use Sigma notation and then taught 100 level college statistics while I also gave them exercises on basics spacial number visualization (real mathmaticians do a lot of rounding and approximating but you need a good spacial sense of numbers to do that) — the kids had no idea they were doing college level work, thus they never stressed about it. I’m a mathematician by training, although I never officially worked in that field (my college advisor wanted me to stay in theoretical math but there’s no money in it). If you look at my brag story above, you’ll see my approach worked well. Anyhow, I was nervous about getting in trouble about my “Drug Awareness” innovation and I thought the kids challenging the approach meant they didn’t like it, or were suspicious of it, so over the weekend I went back to a more conventional, if not as rabidly drug promotional, drug awareness program. But that Monday when I started teaching it, the kids rebelled. I said, I thought you didn’t like my other approach and they said, almost unanimously, that, actually, it was their favorite class of the day.

The existence of talent is a fact, and I've always under stood this because I was an outlier in talent both directions from a young age. Certain subjects, particularly things that require certain types of logical thinking such as the sciences and computer programming, I excelled at with hardly any effort at all. Straight As and I barely had to try, hobbyist at the level of a professional, that sort of thing.
On the other hand I can't effectively work with my hands on anything of significant complexity. I tried to learn to draw for six months, practicing every day. When I was young I had to spend a significant amount of time practicing my handwriting just so I could write legibly for tests.
When I tried to take an into level wood shop class, the kind that is basically a free A for everyone who takes it, I could not do it. Most of us started at zero experience and I worked much harder than anyone in the class. I had to redo every step at least once. I would go after school trying to build this shitty nightstand that everyone else built with hardly even trying because I didn't want to fail a class, and in the end I couldn't do it. No amount of effort could overcome my lack of talent and I couldn't complete the project. The teacher decided to give me an A anyway, good guy, but that was the reality of the thing.
But nothing ever drove home the objective fact of talent as much as when suddenly I didn't have it anymore.
I mentioned above I had a talent in computer programming. I had the right combination of traits that made me very good at it and enjoy it a great deal, meaning I poured thousands of hours into learning it and practicing on hobby programs it simply because I liked to. Between my talent an experience I was very, very good for my lack of any formal training. I got a job as a software developer, I started working towards a degree. I actually got accused of cheating on an assignment once because my solution was too good. The professor thought it was impossible that a first year student came up with it on their own. That guy was a complete jackass.
And then, over the course of about 2-3 years, my mental illnesses advanced and I couldn't anymore. It's nebulous enough that I can't pin down any one factor, but a combination of worsening memory, struggle focusing, and a dozen other factors mean I can't really program at much better than a moderately skilled hobbyist level. No where near good enough to work professionally or really dig in to the kind of hobby projects I was getting up to when I wasn't even yet an adult. I was talented enough that I built my life around this skill and then over a few short years it was gone.
In many cases talent is the result of several factors vague enough that it is easy for the talented to pretend that everyone started at the same place. That maybe there is some difference, but that is pretty minor and the real determining factor is how hard a person works to develop a skill. No one likes to think that their achievements would not be possible if they hadn't won the talent lottery.
But that's kind of how it works, and not just talent wise. We might make the most of opportunities our lottery winnings give us, but without those opportunities our achievements would not have been possible. And most importantly of all, we have to remember that not everyone got as lucky as we did.
I take issue with the whole “talent doesn’t exist you just need to put in the effort” philosophy. Partially because I used to have that philosophy but then I kinda had somebody slap it out of me with a reality check.
