Christians also get mad at this. I’m sorry I can see truth in stuff besides Formed.org
People get mad that Christians find Christian messages in secular work and I'm just like... if you didn't want us associating the story with the truth, you shouldn't have made the message so true.

Communion is a means to holiness, not a gold star validating your ability to stay out of a state of mortal sin!
Check out our new FormedNow studio with this episode on how to take better advantage of the grace available to us in the Eucharist.

We’re all a bit broken. Sister Miriam James, a former D-1 volleyball player, tells her story of brokenness and road to healing. Bec and I listened to 'Know Your Story’ in the car a couple months ago and she wanted to know where I got it from b/c it was so beautiful. You can listen to the story by signing up free for Formed.org and then download the app. There’s other amazing content that I’ll highlight in the future.

hey, I have an agnostic friend who's trying to decide on a religion, do you know some Catholic sites or books I can recommend for her to read? Ones that go into historical accuracy would be good too, since she's concerned about that too.
Good question, anon!
I feel that I am at a disadvantage here since I am a Catholic revert due to taking classes on early Christianity in college (aka I know of lots of textbooks that may not be super helpful to a budding Christian) rather than light reading material.
This isn’t necessarily what you asked for, but on Formed.org, they have a video series called “Symbolon: The Catholic Faith Explained” that’s really good and my diocese has a passcode to get Formed for free so dm me for the code if you want it. It’s also elsewhere on the web but costs A LOT.
I’ve also heard good things about a book called “Handbook of Catholic Apologetics: Reasoned Answers to Questions of Faith” by Peter Kreeft and Ronald Tacelli though I haven’t read it myself. Supposedly it’s quite long but thorough. Or maybe even something written by Matthew Kelly would be a good place to start, like “Rediscover Catholicism?”
Or if you just want to get them started down the Christian path in general, I HIGHLY recommend C.S. Lewis’ “Mere Christianity” as a stepping stone. 32,005/10 recommend. Even for us established Catholics who just want to learn more about Christian apologetics/evangelization in general.
******Maybe my followers can give some more input on what media they suggest?******
And I’ll also check with my past theology professors to see what they recommend and keep you updated via reblogs.
Plus if you muster up the courage to come off anon, we could even have an actual conversation about it. But that’s of course up to you. :)

To own the full series of The Search, visit: https://formed.org/thesearch What Jesus did for us through his life, death and resurrection was the greatest act of love in history. He saved us. He did this for each one of us. Personally. But some might feel unworthy of this gift of love. We may feel we have too much baggage. We may feel unlovable. But God didn’t come to reveal himself to us on a pedestal, he came to enter into our messy human condition. To fix us from within. To transform us from the inside out. Some might be surprised by how generous the love of God really is. We don’t deserve God’s love, but that’s the amazing reality of God’s mercy. This relationship with God isn’t all about our love for Him. It’s about His love for us that changes our lives forever.

Every Monday for Lent, Ben Akers and I will discuss the Lenten devotional I Thirst: 40 Days with Mother Teresa which is based on retreat notes from Fr. Joseph Langford, MC, the founder (with St. Teresa) of the priest branch of the Missionaries of Charity.
Episode 4 is now live. (With a story by yours truly about what not to do when working for the Missionaries of Charities.)
All episodes are here.

I don’t know if you guys have heard of formed.org but it’s a Catholic website where you can watch Catholic-related movies and listen to talks, and study the Scriptures, etc. And my Diocese actually purchased a subscription for the parishes to give to the parishioners. I just signed up and it’s seriously amazing! I’m like so excited to be able to add this tool to my spiritual life because Lord knows I need it!

Get the Laudate app!
It helps you learn about the Saints, has the daily readings that would be read at mass, teaches you the order of the mass, teaches you how to go to confession, and has a huge list of prayers in English and Latin both.
I definitely second the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church) and Bible, I personally have the New American Bible Revised Edition.
If you’re a woman, the Blessed is She communities are amazing. If you’re a man, try looking for the Paradisius Dei groups in your area.
Bishop Barron and Word on Fire are so, so good. Fr. Mike, Jackie and Bobby Angel, and all the other folks at Ascension Press are also great. You can see a ton of all of their stuff on YouTube by searching their names or the organizations.
Relevant Radio and EWTN are radio resources for Catholics and they have a ton of resources on their apps and websites to help lead people to the Truth no matter what stage your faith is in. EWTN also has videos and such they do as well.
Catholic.com is an extension of EWTN and that’s where you can find basically the FAQ for Catholic things and beliefs in an easy to digest format from really well-trained Catholic apologists.
If you’re looking for videos, Formed.org has a ton of great stuff. If you DM me I can get you access for free. :)
If you’re looking for podcasts on Catholic things:
The Hour by Renewal Ministries
The Fr. Mike Schmitz Catholic Podcast by Ascension
Pints with Aquinas by Matt Fradd
Etc. There’s tons more out there, and if you have any questions or want recommendations about any sect of Catholicism I can help steer you in the right direction, you can ask me anytime.
Also let me just say welcome home, anon. :) I went through a big discernment process when God was calling me back to the faith and went through RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) to join the Catholic Church so if you have any questions about what that process looks like too feel free to reach out. May God bless you on your journey!
What resources would you recommend for someone who wants to learn more about Catholicism/possibly joining the Catholic Church given that churches are closed right now due to quarantine?
Hi, Anon! I can recommend some resources and things that I found helpful when I was learning about the faith, and I invite my followers to share their input as well!
I don’t know your religious background at all, but the first thing I’d recommend would be a Bible if you don’t have one already. If you wanted to get a Catholic Bible, the New American Bible is the one we use at Mass. My favorite translation is the Revised Standard Version Catholic Edition.
After the Bible, the next thing I’d recommend is that you get a Cathechism of the Catholic Church. The Cathechism contains pretty much everything you need to know about what the Church believes. If you don’t want to buy one, it’s free online here.
I would highly recommend anything and everything that Bishop Robert Barron has ever done. He has a lot of great videos on YouTube on a variety of topics. I would especially recommend his “Catholicism” series which you can find here. Unfortunately you have to pay for it, but I think it’s well worth it.
I’d also recommend Fr. Mike Schmitz on YouTube. He has a lot of good content especially his video on the Eucharist.
I’ve never read it myself but I’ve had several people tell me that Rediscover Catholicism by Matthew Kelly is great book for people who want to learn the basics of the faith.
Dr. Scott Hahn also has a lot of great books that I’d recommend you look into depending on your interests. He’s written about everything from the Mass to Mary and his books are super readable. Rome Sweet Home tells the story of his conversion and might be of interest to you.
Speaking of conversion stories, I can never get through a Catholic post without mentioning my confirmation saint Augustine. I read his Confessions during my own conversion and I really can’t overstate the impact that book had on me. While it’s not necessarily the first place I’d direct you if you’re just looking to learn the basics of Church teaching, if you’re looking into converting I’d highly recommend reading at least parts of it at some point.
Here’s a basic explanation of the structure and meaning of the Mass.
I would also recommend learning to pray the Rosary. Here’s a guide on how to do so. It seems a bit intimidating at first, but it’s a great way to immerse yourself in the mysteries of the faith.
New Advent and Catholic Answers (beware, the forum discussions don’t always accurately represent Church teaching) are also great free resources for you to explore.
It’s unfortunate that churches are closed right now, but once they open up again I’d recommend attending the Mass if you haven’t already. Until then, you could watch livestreamed Masses on YouTube to start to get a feel for it. There are plenty of livestreamed and televised Masses right now but I’ve personally been watching Mass with Word on Fire (Bishop Robert Barron’s channel) on YouTube.
Once churches are open again I’d also highly recommend that you go to Eucharistic Adoration at some point if you feel comfortable doing so. Here are some resources on the Eucharist and Adoration. I haven’t clicked through every link on this site but it looks like there’s a lot of info on here that could be helpful.
Well, this post ended up being a lot longer than I anticipated, but hopefully some of these resources will be helpful for you! Don’t hesitate to reach out either on or off anon if you want to talk more or if you have any questions!
