[This has been rotting in my drafts since early 2020. Thought I'd publish it for fun] I'm reading Maurice and oh my god, Clive suddenly becoming straight in the middle of the book is the biggest fucking plot twist.

#personal #maurice #maurice spoilers #???#i cannot believe this #i saw the movie some time ago and I saw clive's sudden interest in a woman as him just trying to repress his sexuality #i mean that's clearly what the movie wants me to think right #between showing ripley's trail and making ada's similarity to maurice the first thing in a woman he's attracted to #his unwillingness to kiss #i don't think the movie even mentioned him not being attracted to men anymore #wow #forster did to gay man + influenza what mary shelley did to corpse + lightning #ie combined them for the sake of plot convenience to be able to talk about the themes he actually wants to talk about #lmao #the book is still very good!!#it's just a bit of a surprising plot turn for a modern reader #and here i had this whole theory about how brideshead revisited is kind of like the story of 'maurice' told from clive's perspective #while maurice is of course gay lady chatterley's lover #(I haven't actually read lady chatterley's lover yet but there's a definitive connection there right?)#(two men one representing intelect but impotency while the other represents bodily pleasures)#(the latter being a gamekeeper)#smh #*trial not trail jesus
